- Chapter 4 - Stay Away from Deadly Enemies
“But it seems Little Stutter is terrified of human interaction,” Ding Moyan remarked, a sly glint flashing in her eyes.
[Host, you’re being downright wicked.]
The system’s complaint echoed in Ding Moyan’s mind. She responded with a faint smile, rising to slip on her shoes and head downstairs.
“System, what role does the mentor play in the original story? How does she treat the original host?”
[Not much of a role, but to be fair, this mentor has a soft spot for students from well-off families. If they’re also academically strong, she pays them extra attention.]
Ding Moyan clicked her tongue. After tidying herself up, she deliberately applied a soft pink lipstick, a shade that exuded an air of pure innocence.
[Host, are you even listening?]
“Heard you loud and clear. A snobbish mentor, got it,” Ding Moyan nodded. She picked up her books, adopting the demeanor of a model student, and made a show of heading to the mentor’s office.
The third floor of the East Building housed the offices of the class mentors.
“Did you hear? Ding Moyan is participating in this year’s mech competition. When the time comes.”
Yu Sisi’s voice was hushed, but loud enough for the two beside her to hear. A sweet-faced girl cut in with a laugh, her eyes brimming with disdain. “So what? That pretty face Ding Moyan could never compare to our Bobo.”
Ding Bo suddenly halted. Her ears twitched slightly as if catching something, and her brows furrowed in displeasure.
“Shut up,” Ding Bo shot the girl a cold glare.
The girl’s mouth fell open in confusion, but the moment she spotted the figure rounding the corner, she instantly regretted her thoughtless remark.
Yu Sisi whispered, “Why is Ding Moyan here? Do you think she saw us?”
Ding Bo replied curtly, “No idea. Probably not.”
The girl immediately spiraled into conspiracy theories. “She must be here to ask the mech mentor for extra help. That way, she can outscore our Bobo.”
“Oh my god! She’s trying to secretly one-up Bobo!”
The melodramatic girl clasped a hand over her mouth, gasping, “How terrifying!”
Ding Moyan stood at the door, tapping into the scanner system to locate her mentor and input her name.
The door slid open.
Inside the office, several mentors were chatting about their respective students, but they abruptly fell silent at her entrance.
Following the system’s directions, Ding Moyan approached the third seat on the side and greeted softly, “Mentor.”
Mentor Yu, Yu Sisi’s aunt and Ding Bo’s loyal follower. Their close relationship was one of the reasons Ding Bo had managed to snatch the position of class president from the original host.
Class mentor votes accounted for 30% of the selection process.
This was the intel Ding Moyan had gathered from the system. Her impeccable attitude and behavior left Mentor Yu momentarily at a loss for criticism.
Mentor Yu took a sip of tea before lifting her gaze to Ding Moyan. “Ding Moyan, do you know why I called you here today?”
Ding Moyan smiled and nodded. “Yes, it’s because of the student council president.”
“And do you also know that the Engineering Institute prohibits early relationships?” Mentor Yu intended to reprimand her.
Ding Moyan replied, “Of course I know.”
“But I’m not in one.”
Mentor Yu’s face was full of skepticism. While she wouldn’t dare cross the student council president, a nobody like Ding Moyan was fair game especially after she’d just learned that Ding Moyan had struck one of the president’s lackeys over an omega the president despised.
Instructor Yu sneered, “You don’t? Then why are there rumors online about you and the president, along with a video of you entering her office and staying there for so long?”
So quick to target me, Ding Moyan inwardly scoffed at the absurd setup of the original story.
Why was there such a ridiculous instructor, spouting words that sounded like they came straight out of a bad script?
But this kind of bully, who only picked on the weak, wasn’t too hard to handle.
Ding Moyan replied, “The president had business with me.”
“Oh? Then why didn’t she call for me?” Instructor Yu leaned back in her comfortable chair, dragging out her tone.
“Well, you’d have to ask the president why she didn’t call for you and came to me instead,” Ding Moyan said. “There’s really nothing between us completely innocent.”
Instructor Yu let out a disdainful snort. “As if your word means anything.”
A faint smile tugged at Ding Moyan’s lips as she earnestly suggested, “Instructor Yu, if you don’t believe me, you could always call the president and ask her yourself. Who knows? She might be more than willing to answer your questions.”
Her long black hair cascaded to her sides, and her glass-like gaze peeked through the strands sincere and innocent, as if she were truly a model student helping her instructor get to the bottom of things.
Instructor Yu froze on the spot. She hadn’t expected the usually aloof Ding Moyan to talk back.
Her face darkened as she slammed her teacup onto the table with undue force, causing tea to splash onto the surface.
“Are you threatening me? Is this how you speak to your class instructor?”
Ding Moyan gave her a strange look. “Instructor, you’re acting odd. Haven’t I been speaking to you with nothing but respect?”
Outside the office door, two people were jostling for position.
“Well? Did you hear anything? Anything at all?”
“Stop pushing me!”
Yu Sisi had brought a special eavesdropping device. As long as it was pressed against the wall, she could pick up the voices inside though the office was equipped with interference, making the audio fuzzy.
“Quick, tell me what the instructor said to Ding Moyan.”
Yu Sisi frowned. “Ding Moyan’s instructor is my aunt. They were talking about the president something about dating rumors.”
“What?!” The girl’s eyes widened in shock. “So the rumors on the official site are true? Ding Moyan really is getting involved with the president?”
“What about our Bo Bo then?”
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Ding Bo said, displeased. She didn’t like people spreading unsavory gossip about the president.
Though Ding Bo was certain there was no way the president would be involved with Ding Moyan, she still felt a knot of irritation in her chest.
The office door swung open, interrupting Ding Bo’s thoughts. Ding Moyan stepped out, seemingly unsurprised to find them there.
Dressed in a soft orange outfit that was fresh and eye-catching, Ding Moyan’s expression was as cold as ever, her gaze icy.
Yu Sisi shivered, feeling the awkwardness of being caught eavesdropping. She rubbed the bridge of her nose sheepishly.
“Hi, I’m Ye Ye,” the sweet-looking girl beside Ding Bo greeted first, her pretty eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement.
Ding Moyan politely shook the slender hand extended to her, not leaving the other girl hanging.
