- Chapter 9 - The Banquet
Just as Jenny had anticipated, the matter quickly escalated.
Upon returning, Prince Ram threw a tantrum and began packing to leave the Kingdom of Ferrari, alarming the diplomat who rushed to report to the king. On the way, the diplomat was intercepted by Queen Jiao.
The diplomat had already heard Ram’s exaggerated version of events, and he embellished it even further. Queen Jiao was so furious she nearly fainted.
Fortunately, she had stopped the diplomat in time. If the king had heard about this, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
“You must stop Prince Ram at all costs,” Queen Jiao said calmly. “I will speak to the princess. I assure you, she will apologize to Prince Ram very soon.”
The diplomat hesitated. “Your Majesty, if you knew Prince Ram’s temper, you wouldn’t ask me to stop him…”
“Then what use are you as a diplomat?” Queen Jiao’s expression instantly darkened. “If you can’t handle such a trivial matter, what good are you?!”
Twenty minutes later, Queen Jiao stormed into Yu Ke’s quarters. “Yu Ke! Come out and explain yourself!”
Yu Ke had been searching everywhere for her golden retriever. While she was out helping Jenny, the puppy had slipped away and was still missing.
Queen Jiao had arrived faster than she expected. Yu Ke set aside what she was doing and trudged over listlessly. “Mother, if you’re here about Ram, I really have nothing to explain. He hit a maid, I couldn’t stand it, so I told him to get lost.”
“Listen to this!” Queen Jiao’s face twisted with rage. “You told Prince Ram to get lost? How dare you!”
Yu Ke shrugged, looking indifferent.
“Do you know why Prince Ram traveled thousands of miles to Ferrari?” Queen Jiao pointed at Yu Ke, scolding her harshly. “He came to discuss a marriage alliance with you!”
Yu Ke let out an “ah” and muttered, “Well, that’s perfect. I don’t like him anyway.”
Queen Jiao was so angry she couldn’t speak. She raised her hand as if to strike Yu Ke.
Yu Ke turned her face aside, bracing for the blow.
But the slap only landed lightly, like a tickle. Queen Jiao withdrew her hand and glared at her fiercely. “If it weren’t for the fact that your face still has its uses, I would have slapped you dead!”
Yu Ke gave a faint smile.
Just then, Jenny appeared from somewhere. Seeing Queen Jiao strike Yu Ke, she grew anxious. Queen Jiao noticed her and composed herself, saying to Yu Ke, “I am hosting a banquet tonight to entertain Prince Ram. You will apologize to him properly during the banquet. Do not let the situation escalate.”
Yu Ke asked, “Do I have to go?”
“Yes!”
Yu Ke felt utterly resigned. She really didn’t see the point of staying in the palace.
Queen Jiao added meaningfully, “Lan Xing and Yu Jie will also be there.”
At the mention of Lan Xing’s name, Yu Ke seemed to zone out, lost in thought for a moment.
Jenny, watching from the side, frowned slightly.
After a pause, Yu Ke said, “What does their presence have to do with me?”
Queen Jiao exchanged a glance with Jenny and said evasively, “You know very well that Lan Xing won’t be happy marrying the crown prince. She doesn’t love him…”
Yu Ke was exasperated. “Are you suggesting I two-time? Where on earth did you get the confidence to think I could handle both Prince Yado and the fiancée of the Prince of Ferrari?!”
Queen Jiao pursed her lips, looking at her as she said, “You’re very beautiful, don’t you know that?”
Yu Ke: “…”
“Any Omega would easily fall for you,” Queen Jiao continued. “It was after seeing your photo that Prince Ram decided to come here.”
“Is that so?” Yu Ke replied with amusement. “In reality, I’m practically disliked by everyone and even dogs find me annoying.”
Seeing that she couldn’t get through to her, Queen Jiao turned to Jenny. “What do you think of the princess? If you were an Omega, would you fall for her?”
Jenny’s eyelids trembled slightly as she lowered her head, hesitating to speak.
“Jenny isn’t an Omega, don’t ask her such questions,” Yu Ke interjected.
Queen Jiao spoke earnestly, “No matter what, it’s best to win the princess’s favor. If that doesn’t work out, there’s still Prince of Yado. Although Yado isn’t as resource-rich as the Panda Planet, its strength is considerable, and it’s close to us. Gaining the support of the Yado Kingdom will help you establish yourself in the future. You understand this logic, no need for me to spell it out, right?”
Yu Ke offered no further rebuttal. Queen Jiao then turned to Jenny. “Take her to bathe and change. Remind her to put on a good performance tonight.”
Jenny remained standing in place, unmoving. Yu Ke said, “Jenny is no longer my maid. I’ve decided to grant her freedom and am currently looking for a path forward for her.”
Queen Jiao: “???”
“Have you lost your mind?!” Queen Jiao exploded in fury. “Do you even remember how much it cost to buy her and how much effort we put into training her?!”
“Oh, so this is why you caused trouble with Prince Ram over a maid? It was about her, wasn’t it?!”
Jenny hung her head lower. Yu Ke said nonchalantly, “Jenny hasn’t done anything wrong. You know her character well, don’t make things difficult for her.”
After Yu Ke walked away, the queen eagerly questioned Jenny about the details. Jenny explained that she had been dismissed because she had informed the queen about something.
The queen didn’t believe this explanation, so Jenny had no choice but to tell her that Yu Ke had sent her away to act as a spy beside Yu Jie. Only then did the queen accept the situation.
The banquet began at eight o’clock, resembling a classical European court-style event. The hosts took their seats first, followed by the guests.
The king also attended the banquet. To his right sat the Princess Lan Xing and Prince Yu Jie, while the empty seat to his left was reserved for Prince Ram, with Yu Ke seated beside him.
This arrangement meant that whenever Yu Ke lifted her head, she would see Lan Xing sitting directly across from her.
Across the candlelight and floral arrangements, Lan Xing nodded slightly in her direction. Her golden hair was elegantly swept up from her forehead, revealing a full and beautiful brow. Her sapphire-blue eyes seemed to glow, unconsciously drawing Yu Ke’s attention.
She wore a strapless dress with a ruffled neckline that half-covered her collarbone. The line of her collarbone traced from her trapezius to her shoulders and arms, finally disappearing into the long gloves. The graceful curves and snow-white skin were a delight to behold. Yu Ke’s mind kept drifting to the image of the gland at the back of her neck, and the conversations around her went in one ear and out the other.
“Is Prince Ram not here yet?” the king asked impatiently.
“He’s on his way,” Queen Jiao replied with elegant composure. “Young people, you know how they are, always prone to sulking.”
“Oh?” the king asked curiously. “Who is he sulking with?”
Queen Jiao gestured toward Yu Ke with her chin. Yu Ke suddenly realized, “Oh, it’s me. I upset him.”
The king narrowed his eyes, while Queen Jiao smiled and said, “They just had a little argument. A’Ke will apologize to Prince Ram in a moment.”
The king chuckled, “Just a spat between youngsters. Let them be.”
Yu Jie remarked, “If it were me, I’d go pick up Prince Ram right now.”
All eyes turned to Yu Ke, with Queen Jiao even shooting her a meaningful glance, urging her to show some enthusiasm. The crown prince had practically spelled it out, why wasn’t she getting up to fetch him?
But Yu Ke had no intention of moving. If Ram were a pretty girl, she might have acted more chivalrously, but he was a boy. Just because he’d differentiated into an Omega, did he have to be so overly dramatic? She couldn’t accept that.
Sigh. Maybe even before transmigrating, she’d been a lesbian at heart.
Among the crowd, only the king was oblivious to the situation. He took a small sip of wine, looking utterly confused at everyone.
Just then, Lan Xing spoke up, “Let me give Prince Ram a call and see where he is.”
“You’re so thoughtful,” Yu Jie glanced at her with a smile, “But if it were us having a tiff, I’d make sure to cheer you up until you were happy again.”
Lan Xing remained unmoved and quickly dialed the number, saying, “Hello?”
Ram’s voice came through, “Waaah! Lan Xing, my high heels broke! I’m looking for another pair of shoes… Wait for me, waaah! Oh no, my clothes, why are all the outfits I brought like this? Damn it! Do any of you even know how to iron clothes?!”
Everyone: “…”
Lan Xing covered the speaker, giving everyone an apologetic look. Then she did something strange…
Hugging the phone, she glanced left and right before slowly sliding down from her chair, like a small animal trying to hide. Only her hairstyle remained visible above the table. Huddled down, she covered her lips and whispered urgently to Ram, “The king and queen are waiting for you. The banquet can’t start without you. Stop fussing over the shoes, come here, now!”
Yu Ke: “…” Help, she’s so adorable!
