- Chapter 10 - The Evening Banquet
Lan Xing emerged from under the table after finishing her phone call, offering a shy smile to everyone.
This was typical of her. Every time Yu Ke saw her, she was quiet and refined, never raising her voice too much, as if afraid of disturbing others.
In contrast, Yu Jie loved to hold forth and impose his opinions on others, carrying himself with an air of masculine authority. Hearing Lan Xing hang up, he couldn’t resist complaining, “Ram is really something, wearing high heels when he’s almost 1.8 meters tall!”
“Ram just cares about his appearance. We should be understanding,” Lan Xing said gently.
“A’Ke is barely 1.8 meters herself. Ram almost looks taller standing next to her,” Yu Jie glanced at Yu Ke and chuckled. “Can you handle that?”
Yu Ke raised an eyebrow and replied calmly, “I don’t mind.”
“Why should she mind?” Queen Jiao laughed. “A’Ke is 1.8 meters in shoes too, no shorter than Ram. Besides, it’s normal for men to be taller than women. Differentiation doesn’t make you grow!”
Yu Jie smirked. “Not only does it not make you taller, but differentiation also doesn’t change your original gender.”
Yu Ke felt uncomfortable hearing this and retorted, “Are you trying to stir up gender conflict?”
“My apologies, I didn’t mean that at all,” Yu Jie leaned back casually, one hand resting naturally on Lan Xing’s back while the other picked up his wine glass. He said thoughtfully, “I don’t discriminate against any gender, but I hope everyone recognizes their place. Women and Omegas are responsible for childbirth and handling miscellaneous tasks, while other work requiring intellect and strength should be left to elite Alphas. That’s just how society functions.”
The King nodded in agreement, though some at the table frowned, clearly displeased with the Crown Prince’s remarks. Yu Ke, in particular, found such statements distasteful. She asked, “In your eyes, do women and Omegas only have that much value?”
Yu Jie hadn’t expected Yu Ke to challenge him so directly. What he’d said was, to him, simply common sense.
Across the galaxies, every society needs elites to lead. These elites include politicians, entrepreneurs, judges, military officers, and so on. Among those in these professions, male Alphas make up 69%, female Alphas account for 30%, and the remaining 1% are undifferentiated Betas. This clearly shows how superior it is to be a male Alpha.
Considering the women present, Yu Jie carefully chose his words. “Not exactly. Omegas are naturally sensitive and emotionally nuanced, so many of them achieve extraordinary accomplishments in culture and the arts. Their value is immeasurable.”
Queen Jiao frowned. “Do female Alphas really only make up 30% of the elite? Is that statistic reliable? Some of our nation’s most outstanding fleet commanders are women…”
Yu Jie’s expression turned uncertain. At that moment, the King interjected, “Alright, at least in our Kingdom of Ferrari, male and female Alphas enjoy equal rights. That’s fairer than in most nations across the galaxies.”
Everyone nodded, but Yu Jie felt dissatisfied. His sense of superiority had no outlet, and he blamed the others for not recognizing it.
Yu Ke checked the time, it was already 8:15. She made a move to stand and said to the King, “I’ll go check on Prince Ram. You can start serving the dishes.”
“That won’t do,” the king said with grace despite his hunger. “Ram is a guest who has traveled from afar. Of course we must wait for him before serving the dishes.”
Yu Ke briefly escaped the suffocating atmosphere and had just stepped out when she saw Ram, dressed flamboyantly and wearing ill-fitting shoes, running toward her.
“Sister A’Ke,” Ramu called from afar, “are you here to fetch me?”
Yu Ke: …This is suffocating.
By the time she returned to the banquet hall, she had gained a 1.8-meter tall accessory hanging from her arm.
Queen Jiao whispered to her, “Did you apologize?”
Yu Ke calmly picked up her wine glass. “No.”
“See, he’s not angry anymore,” Queen Jiao said with a smile. “Boys are all like this, easy to appease. If it were a girl, who knows how long the anger would last.”
Yu Ke: “…Have you forgotten you’re also female?”
“That’s precisely why I have a fiery temper,” Queen Jiao whispered. “Be on your best behavior, Ram likes you a lot.”
Yu Ke turned her face away and immediately met Yu Jie’s hostile glare.
She really couldn’t understand, was Yu Jie insane? With Lan Xing right beside him, why did he keep staring at her with such venom?
The banquet served one dish every ten minutes. By the time all twenty courses had been served, Yu Ke was long past her limit.
The king and Yu Jie kept conversing, with Ram constantly interrupting. The queen chimed in occasionally as the king discussed politics and showed concern for Ram and Lan Xing, asking about their adaptation to life in the Ferrari Kingdom.
Ram began describing the customs and culture of his Yado Kingdom, talking about deserts, forests, and the lifestyles of indigenous people, trying hard to engage everyone’s interest.
He said, “It’s warm all year round where I’m from, with endless fruits. Durians can grow this big…”
At this point, Yu Jie would interject, “Durians smell awful. I don’t understand why anyone in the world would eat something that resembles dog excrement!”
“…” Ram chose to ignore him and continued, “Yado is the only place in the Twin Star System that can breed dinosaurs. Have you ever seen a T-Rex that tall?”
“We don’t welcome T-Rexes here,” Yu Jie said with a laugh. “With so many precious buildings in the capital, we can’t risk having them trampled by a T-Rex.”
Ram was so angry he rolled his eyes. He realized this Yu Jie was extremely arrogant, flaunting his status as crown prince and speaking without any regard for others’ feelings!
The king beside him was drunk and muddle-headed, completely oblivious to Yu Jie’s rudeness. The queen chose not to provoke Yu Jie, occasionally smoothing things over. Only Yu Ke would rebut him, but most of the time she seemed distracted.
After leaving Ram speechless with anger, Yu Jie took over the conversation and began boasting about his interstellar experiences over the years, the planets he’d visited, the starships he’d piloted, exaggerated tales of nearly encountering space pirates. He went on for almost an hour.
Rau said sourly, “My three elder sisters can also pilot starships, though they haven’t been to as many places…”
“Oh, really?” Yu Jie laughed. “I thought Yado didn’t have starships.”
“…” Ramu retorted, “Are you even human?”
Yu Jie burst into laughter. “Sorry, I was just joking!”
Ram spat a “Pfft” and ignored him.
Yu Ke had long grown impatient. Only by occasionally glancing at Lan Xing could she barely maintain her composure.
Lan Xing didn’t speak much. She spent the evening eating blueberry mousse and drinking juice, dividing a palm-sized portion of mousse into thirty-six equal pieces and consuming one piece every two minutes, this way, she could stretch it out for an extra hour.
Whenever someone glanced her way, she would respond with a smile.
Mention of the starship sparked Yu Jie’s enthusiasm. He stood up and announced, “By the way, let me share a secret with you all…”
Hearing this, Yu Ke lifted her eyelids to glance at him. She had thought the banquet would end soon, but this kid just wouldn’t stop.
Lan Xing, meanwhile, secretly yawned, propping her chin on one hand.
Ram simply rolled his eyes and continued eating with his head down.
The king was drunk and snoring, while the queen leaned back in her chair, squinting as she played along, “What secret?”
Yu Jie, full of energy, declared loudly, “Next month, my wedding gift to the bride will be a brand-new interstellar battleship!”
Ram was shocked, “A battleship?!”
The queen covered her mouth, “That’s quite an extravagant expense…”
The king opened his eyes briefly, “A battleship?”
Such an expensive wedding gift must be a huge surprise for the bride, right? Yu Ke cautiously shifted her gaze to Lan Xing. Suddenly, she felt like an anxious child. She knew Lan Xing would respond with a smile, but she was afraid to see that expression of delight on Lan Xing’s face.
At that moment, she clearly realized: Lan Xing… was not hers.
The air fell silent for three seconds. Surprisingly, Lan Xing showed no reaction to Yu Jie’s news. Ram kindly reminded her, “Lan Xing? What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy?”
Lan Xing lifted her face, her expression far from excited as she looked at Yu Jie. Her beautiful blue eyes seemed somewhat vacant. She bit her lip and asked, “Didn’t we agree before that you would give me an island?”
Yu Ke instantly understood.
She had traveled far from the Panda Planet to marry here, what she wanted most was a sea where she could swim freely. An interstellar battleship was completely useless to her!
But for Yu Jie, this was funding from the national treasury. Rather than buying an island of little value, it was better to purchase a battleship that he could take out for a spin in his free time.
