Transmigrated as the Little Concubine of a Paper-Thin Man - Chapter 18
When Shi Yunjii woke up again, she found herself lying on a soft, large bed.
She had slept very comfortably, feeling completely relaxed and languid. But shortly after regaining consciousness, the memory of what happened before she passed out made her raise her guard.
The bed curtains were layers of silk gauze, and through them, she could vaguely see a slender, tall woman standing in the gorgeously decorated room.
Shi Yunjii gently pushed aside the gauze curtain and peeked out. Only after confirming the person was Yan Ling did her heart finally settle a little. She quietly and cautiously tried to get out of bed, but as her feet reached the floor, she realized her clothes had been changed, and her original shoes were nowhere to be found.
With no other option, she tapped the bed frame twice, intending to draw Yan Ling’s attention.
Yan Ling was lost in her thoughts and only heard the sound after a while. She quickly turned around.
Their eyes met in the air. Yan Ling’s gaze was unusually filled with a hint of urgency and fervor, which made Shi Yunjie feel puzzled. The next moment, Yan Ling walked toward her quickly. Shi Yunjie immediately lowered her head, gripping the hem of her skirt as she quietly waited.
The sound of footsteps stopped two steps in front of her.
“Are you…” Yan Ling spoke, her voice hoarse, like a distressed person who had been thirsty for a long time and couldn’t find water, “alright?”
Shi Yunjii secretly twisted her shoulders to check.
It felt strange. She clearly remembered feeling injured in the hurricane, yet after waking up from sleep, her body felt light. There was not a single bruise or scratch on her, and she even felt healthier than usual.
With confusion, she raised her head and shook it at Yan Ling, signaling that she was in good condition.
Yan Ling visibly let out a sigh of relief.
She turned and retrieved a medicine bowl from a nearby table: “The spiritual recovery medicine. It was brewed a while ago. Drink it.”
Shi Yunjii was stunned, then accepted the bowl, feeling somewhat overwhelmed.
She looked at the dark, clear medicine, which was obviously made from expensive ingredients, and hesitated to drink it. As Yan Ling’s immortal maid, when did she ever receive such treatment, having her Immortal Master personally tend to her with medicine?
Thinking of this, Shi Yunjie secretly looked up to observe Yan Ling’s reaction.
Yan Ling misunderstood her hesitation.
She took the bowl and tested the temperature: “Is there a problem?” She tilted her head in thought: “Is it too hot? This medicine is most effective at this temperature. If you can’t drink it, I can cool it down for you.”
Shi Yunjii shook her head.
She took a deep breath, afraid that Yan Ling would say something else she couldn’t understand, and then tipped her head back, gulping the medicine down in one go.
The medicine was not bitter, but she drank it too quickly and ended up choking and coughing on the last two mouthfuls. Yan Ling reacted quickly, immediately stepping forward to pat her back. After Shi Yunjii frantically refused, she held out a handkerchief: “Wipe your mouth.”
Shi Yunjii forced a smile, using the handkerchief to wipe her mouth and hide the astonishment on her face.
Finally, as Yan Ling returned the bowl to the table, she couldn’t help but use gestures to ask: [What happened afterward?]
Yan Ling understood her meaning and spoke calmly: “Huanzhu ran away. Everything else is fine.”
Shi Yunjii recalled the other woman’s fox-like eyes, and her heart was filled with an indescribable feeling.
She asked again: [What about the box?]
“The box?” Yan Ling stared at her intently, “Do you have no memory? About that… box.”
[I think… I opened it?] Shi Yunjie was unsure.
The last image in her memory told her that before she fainted, the “Box of Dao Heart” had indeed been opened in her hands. The moment the box opened, she seemed to have heard a strange sound.
Yan Ling’s gaze went blank for a moment.
She replied: “Indeed, it was opened.”
Shi Yunjie’s eyes widened instantly, and she involuntarily grabbed Yan Ling’s wrist. Although she couldn’t speak, her demeanor and expression at the moment were filled with curiosity about the box’s contents.
Yan Ling looked away, slightly uneasy.
Shi Yunjie thought she had touched a sensitive subject for the other person and quickly withdrew her hand.
She changed the subject: [It seems Huanzhu wasn’t lying. She did have a way to open the box.]
“Her?” Yan Ling’s tone was full of contempt.
Shi Yunjii blinked blankly.
“It has nothing to do with her. Her formation was for escaping.” Yan Ling stood up.
Shi Yunjii nodded in understanding.
Yan Ling suddenly moved closer: “You…” She paused for a long time, seemingly finally making up her mind, and asked, “Is there anything you want to tell me?”
[Me?] Shi Yunjie pointed to the tip of her nose, her expression utterly bewildered.
“About the box… about your… identity.” Yan Ling felt she had given the biggest possible hint.
Shi Yunjie twitched the corner of her mouth and shrugged innocently.
[Don’t you know all of this already?]
Yan Ling’s gaze dimmed for a moment.
But she didn’t press or say anything more. She just picked up the empty bowl and turned around: “I see…” she said, “You should rest well first.”
Shi Yunjii immediately got up, ignoring her bare feet, and hurried to catch up with her.
[I need to go back.]
Yan Ling: “Go back where?”
Shi Yunjii pointed toward the door.
She wanted to express that she needed to return to Moon Bell Peak, to the courtyard where the immortal maids gathered. But she didn’t know where she was right now, so she couldn’t tell which direction the maids’ quarters were in.
“No need to go back,” Yan Ling looked away, deliberately avoiding her gaze.
She seemed slightly embarrassed: “From now on… you’ll live here.”
Here?
Where was ‘here’? Why should she live in this place?
Shi Yunjii was very confused.
She felt like the world had undergone a fundamental change since she woke up. At least, all of Yan Ling’s actions seemed utterly incomprehensible to her.
However, her question was soon answered.
After Yan Ling left, she secretly got out of bed to observe the surroundings. When she confirmed she was in the inner chamber of the Jade Bell Palace, which belonged exclusively to Yan Ling, her body trembled involuntarily—
Yan Ling had actually housed her in her own bedroom?!
Shi Yunjii bit her lip in thought.
Combining the various events that occurred before she fainted, she could only guess that because she had inadvertently opened the box, Yan Ling now felt immense gratitude toward her, which led her to completely change her attitude and treat her with such kindness.
With a plausible reason, Shi Yunjii felt much more at ease, except that she was still immensely curious about what came out of the box.
She was very familiar with the Jade Bell Palace. After confirming that her body was fine, she held up her skirt and secretly sneaked back to her usual resting spot in the palace.
Returning to the familiar environment, Shi Yunjii finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Just as she was sitting cross-legged on the couch, planning her future, a voice resonated deep in her mind, nearly scaring her into falling to the floor.
It was only when the voice sounded for the second time that she finally heard the content clearly.
It was Yan Ling’s voice, calling her over and over again.
[Divine Being, Divine Being…]
Shi Yunjii could be certain that these sounds were not her hallucination, which left her at a loss, not knowing what posture to strike, her whole body rigid in place.
In her confusion, she instinctively replied in her mind: [What, what’s going on?]
The voice in her mind disappeared.
Shi Yunjii listened intently, wanting to confirm if the voice was truly gone. Just as she relaxed a little, thinking the “crisis” was over, the voice suddenly sounded again.
This time, it was no longer a meaningless summons. Yan Ling’s voice was filled with delight.
[Divine Being, you are finally willing to respond to me.]
Shi Yunjii froze completely, even wishing she could stop her thoughts.
But there was no way. The brain is a mysterious thing; the more you try not to think, the more chaotic thoughts pop up. The thought that all these thoughts would be transmitted to Yan Ling made Shi Yunjie so embarrassed that her toes started curling up.
[Why the silence? Haven’t I passed the test?]
Yan Ling’s tone was very calm, and one had to listen very carefully to distinguish the urgency within it, [This is your grace bestowed upon me. Do you have any divine decree to instruct?]
Shi Yunjie slowly calmed down.
She began to realize that her ordinary thoughts were not being transmitted to Yan Ling. To communicate with Yan Ling in her mind, she had to express a very strong desire to talk.
This realization put Shi Yunjii at ease.
She began to wonder why this absurd thing was happening. Soon, she captured a sound in her memory.
It was a fleeting system notification sound in the last moment before she fainted—
[Congratulations, Player, for activating the new function treasure chest. The “Dialogue Communication” system is now open.]
Shi Yunjii gasped.
The game official’s update announcement had indeed mentioned the addition of a “language dialogue” module, but since she was naturally unable to speak, she never paid much attention to the update.
She hadn’t expected the official game to be so original this time, adding this updated module to a treasure chest. Even more bizarrely, after entering the game, this function had turned into a mind-to-mind transmission mode between her and Yan Ling.
She didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad thing, Shi Yunjii gave a wry smile.
In her mind, Yan Ling was still awaiting her reply. Shi Yunjii took a deep breath.
She tried calling out: [Yan Ling?]
[I am here.]
Yan Ling’s voice rang out immediately, like an eager puppy finally noticed by its owner.
