Transmigrated as the Husband of a Vicious Villainess - Chapter 6
Wen Miao saw their expressions darken further, yet none of them refuted her. She knew her casual guess had hit the mark.
Her look of disgust became even more pronounced. Pinching her nose, she unhesitatingly retreated several steps.
Fang Haiyang and Wu Yanqing were used to doing dirty, exhausting chores back home, so they had a higher tolerance for this. Lu Yan, however, came from a privileged background and had never encountered anything like it.
If Wu Yanqing hadn’t insisted on grabbing him while slipping… At the thought, Lu Yan shot him a lethal glare, his face turning an ashen shade of green.
Noticing the look, Wu Yanqing’s expression turned fawning and awkward. “Brother Yan, I really didn’t mean it. Please, be the bigger man and forgive me!”
The men remained blocked in the doorway like wooden stakes. Wen Miao’s brows gradually knit together with impatience.
“A good dog doesn’t block the path. Are you coming in or not? If not, move aside. I need to get out.”
Hearing this, Lu Yan instinctively nudged the other two to step aside.
Wen Miao brushed past them, her brow tightly furrowed. She left a trail of rich, floral fragrance in her wake. Watching her elegant silhouette as she walked away, a flash of disdain and triumph crossed Lu Yan’s eyes.
So what if she acts disgusted? Isn’t she just playing hard-to-get to catch my attention? She even intentionally applied scented balm to lure me.
Wen Miao, of course, had no idea how much Lu Yan was capable of imagining. The noon sun was dazzling, stinging her eyes to the point she could barely keep them open.
She was extremely sensitive to heat and usually hated this kind of weather. But now, shielding her eyes with her hand on the way to Ji Baiqing’s house, she found herself in a surprisingly good mood.
Halfway there, she ran into Ji Baiqing, which caught her by surprise.
Ji Baiqing placed a straw hat on Wen Miao’s head to block the scorching sun, explaining with a smile, “I was worried about you, so I came out to check.”
Seeing Wen Miao dazedly touching the brim of the hat, Ji Baiqing found her adorable. “Don’t worry, this hat is mine. I just washed it, so there’s no smell of sweat.”
Listening to her chatter, Wen Miao felt a small corner of her heart soften. She reached out and lightly grasped the hem of Ji Baiqing’s shirt, an almost dependent gesture though her tone remained haughty. “I’d still find it gross even if you washed it and what could possibly happen to me over such a short distance?”
Ji Baiqing leaned down to look at the beautiful face hidden under the wide brim. Gross? She doesn’t look like she finds it gross at all.
She shrugged and playfully pressed the hat down further. “Wear it even if you hate it. The sun is too fierce.”
“I worry about you even over short distances. Just think of it as me missing you.”
She spoke with such deep sincerity and a trace of lingering tenderness. Despite the shade of the hat, the flush on Wen Miao’s cheeks refused to fade, and her heart rate quickened slightly.
Fortunately, Ji Baiqing stopped teasing her after that, only pausing occasionally to greet villagers she knew.
The items Wen Miao had been carrying had long since been taken over by Ji Baiqing. Once they reached the house, Wen Miao opened the packages.
They were filled with shortbread and pastries—snacks her grandmother and aunt had prepared for her before she left for the countryside.
“Ji Baiqing,” Wen Miao called out. Ji Baiqing looked at her curiously, only to have a piece of mung bean cake pressed against her lips.
Ji Baiqing’s eyes curved as she took a bite. Her tongue accidentally brushed against the tips of Wen Miao’s fingers, leaving them slightly damp.
Wen Miao’s heart skipped a beat. She thrust the remaining half of the cake into Ji Baiqing’s hand and blurted out, “Hold it yourself!”
Ji Baiqing’s voice was clear and cool, standing very close to her. “Miaomiao, thank you~”
Wen Miao felt her earlobes grow even hotter. She snapped, “Don’t call me Miaomiao!”
Aside from her elders, no one had ever called her that.
Ji Baiqing clearly has those kinds of thoughts about me… how, how can she just call me that so easily!
Seeing her flustered and annoyed, Ji Baiqing found “bullying” her even more fun. Her mischievous side took over, and she whispered the intimate nickname into Wen Miao’s ear over and over again.
Wen Miao was called “Miaomiao” until her amber eyes shimmered with tears. Finally, she had to cover Ji Baiqing’s mouth with her hand to make her stop.
“I said stop!” she insisted, her voice strained, the rosy flush spreading to the corners of her eyes as she bit her lip.
Ji Baiqing could feel how soft the hand covering her mouth was. Even the “villainess” smelled fragrant—a rich, womanly scent that swirled around her nose.
She nodded obediently, and only then did Wen Miao release her, albeit skeptically.
The two messed around for a while until Ji Wei and He Xiangyue finished cooking and brought the dishes to the table.
Seeing the large bags of pastries on the table, He Xiangyue was surprised. “Where did all these cakes come from?”
Wen Miao replied, “Auntie He, I brought these from Beijing. They taste quite good, so I brought some for you to try.”
In these times, everyone struggled just to stay fed; a single piece of candy was a luxury. Although the Ji family was well-off, they couldn’t bring themselves to buy pastries that looked this expensive.
Seeing Wen Miao bring so many at once, He Xiangyue immediately tried to decline. “This won’t do! These are such good things, you should keep them for yourself! Be a good girl.”
Ji Baiqing nodded from the side. “Yeah, we can’t buy these snacks in the village. Eat them when you’re hungry, don’t worry about us.”
This girl is talking nonsense again! Wen Miao glared at her, then turned back to He Xiangyue. “Auntie He, you’ve taken such good care of me, that’s why I wanted you to taste them. If you don’t accept, I’ll be too embarrassed to trouble you in the future.”
The one who had been “glared at” by the villainess rubbed her nose and finally switched sides. “Mom, just take them. It’s Miaomiao’s kind intention.”
Ji Baiqing was getting very comfortable using the nickname now.
He Xiangyue couldn’t win the argument, so she finally accepted them and stored the pastries in a jar.
For the afternoon shift, the Village Chief reallocated the plots. Everyone had to finish the work on their own assigned area.
Ji Baiqing helped Wen Miao whenever she was free. She was strong and efficient, quickly finishing the weeding so that Wen Miao could go rest early.
Before leaving, she intentionally took Wen Miao for a stroll past where Shen Niannian and Pan Hongxia were working. Shen Niannian was buried in her work, but as someone who had never done farm labor, her speed was abysmal. Pan Hongxia, however, seemed to have adapted well and only had a small patch left.
Since there was no more work for the afternoon, and remembering Wen Miao’s “filter” for the male lead in the original book, Ji Baiqing gritted her teeth slightly. She decided to take her to see the “heroic” sight of Lu Yan and the others hauling manure.
Ji Baiqing took Wen Miao’s hand and led her away. Wen Miao followed obediently.
The manure for composting came from the village’s public dry latrines. Ji Baiqing stood with Wen Miao at a distance, watching. She pointed at Lu Yan as if casually and asked:
“Wen Miao, do you think Youth Lu is handsome?”
Hearing her return to a more formal address, Wen Miao felt relieved, but the question itself made her unhappy.
Could it be that Ji Baiqing is interested in Lu Yan? Clearly… she wants to be my friend, yet she likes other men.
She pursed her lips in displeasure and answered without hesitation, “Ugly.”
Hearing this, Ji Baiqing still wasn’t entirely at ease and pushed further: “Don’t you think Youth Lu has a great build?”
As the novel’s protagonist, Lu Yan’s character was debatable, but his looks and physique were indeed top-tier.
Wen Miao grew annoyed. “Do you like Lu Yan? You’re annoying me with all these questions!”
Tsk, such a bad temper, Ji Baiqing thought.
She grabbed Wen Miao’s slender wrist, her tone helpless. “Why are you angry? I won’t ask anymore.”
She tried to lead Wen Miao away, but the girl stood her ground, her beautiful face set in a stubborn expression.
Ji Baiqing asked patiently, “My eldest miss, what’s wrong now? What are you angry about this time?”
Wen Miao shook off her hand and questioned her, “Do you like Lu Yan?”
Ji Baiqing nearly gagged. “…I don’t.”
Setting aside how overbearing and “greasy” the male lead was in the book, one thing was clear: Ji Baiqing was essentially asexual; she didn’t have those kinds of feelings for anyone, man or woman.
Wen Miao was still unsatisfied with the answer. “Then why did you ask so much and specifically bring me here to see him?”
“I heard the village girls saying he was handsome, but seeing him now, he’s just average. Wen Miao, you must never fall for a man like that. He looks unreliable!” Ji Baiqing said with absolute conviction.
So that’s how it is? Seeing that Ji Baiqing didn’t seem to be lying, Wen Miao’s mood improved significantly.
She looked at Ji Baiqing’s face—which appeared slightly cold when not smiling—and suddenly said:
“Ji Baiqing, I agree to be your friend.”
Ji Baiqing was a bit dazed. “Huh?”
Wen Miao lowered her eyes, her stunning face still showing a bit of awkwardness. She didn’t repeat what she had already said, only emphasized: “Just friends!”
Ji Baiqing better not think she can chase me that easily! How could two women… two big women get together so easily!
Before Wen Miao could finish her thought, Ji Baiqing grabbed her and ran toward the back mountain.
Before she could ask anything, a breathless Wen Miao was brought to the foot of the mountain. They took off their shoes, waded across a small stream, and walked further in until they reached a flat meadow.
The ground was covered in tiny purple and pink wildflowers.
Wen Miao’s chest heaved as she struggled to catch her breath, only to be scooped up by the waist by Ji Baiqing and spun around several times.
Finally, the two collapsed onto the grass. Looking up at the dense shade of the green trees, Ji Baiqing suddenly spoke: “Wen Miao, I’m so happy.”
Wen Miao turned her head to look at her, thinking idly, What is she so happy about?
“I’m happy to be accepted by you and to become your friend.”
As if hearing the other woman’s inner thoughts, Ji Baiqing provided the explanation.
Wen Miao turned onto her side, propping herself up on her arm. After hesitating for a long time, she finally voiced the doubt in her heart.
“Why do you want to be my friend? Ever since I was little, no one has ever wanted to be my friend of their own accord.”
There were exceptions, of course, but those were always people who wanted something from her.
“Do you want me to do something for you? Money, or…” Me?
Before she could finish, Ji Baiqing interrupted.
“Wen Miao, you’re very good. You’re beautiful, your temper isn’t actually bad, and once I got to know you, you’re actually quite cute.”
As soon as she said it, Wen Miao immediately bit her wrist. It didn’t hurt much, but it left a neat little row of tooth marks. The girl glared at her with those upturned peach-blossom eyes.
“You’re the cute one! Don’t you dare call me cute!”
Well, her temper is indeed a bit bad, Ji Baiqing thought to herself.
