Transmigrated as the Husband of a Vicious Villainess - Chapter 4
It wasn’t clear if Wen Miao had actually heard her, but her grip on Ji Baiqing’s finger loosened slightly. Ji Baiqing breathed a sigh of relief, easily withdrew her hand, and scooped the girl up in a horizontal carry.
The person in her arms was light as a feather, with almost no weight to her. Ji Baiqing carried her to the clinic without the slightest effort.
Seeing them again, Auntie Zhang was surprised. “What happened this time?”
Ji Baiqing replied helplessly, “Auntie Zhang, please take a look. I think she has a fever.”
A measurement with the thermometer confirmed a low-grade fever. It was likely a combination of exhaustion from the long journey and catching a chill due to the drastic temperature difference between day and night.
Auntie Zhang set up an IV drip for her. Halfway through the bottle, Wen Miao woke up. Her eyes met the familiar sight of the clinic.
She blinked and tried to speak, but her throat felt incredibly parched, and she couldn’t help but let out a cough.
Seeing her awake, Ji Baiqing poured her a cup of warm water. “Wen Miao, you’re awake. Are you hungry?”
The water soothed her throat, and Wen Miao felt much more alert. Hearing the question, her eyelashes fluttered slightly as she nodded.
At this, Ji Baiqing squinted and smiled. She opened the buns she had brought that morning and handed them over. They were still warm—perfect for eating now.
Clutching the soft, fluffy bun, Wen Miao couldn’t quite describe how she felt; her heart was a swirl of complex emotions.
“Thank you.” Wen Miao was at her most polite in this lifetime when dealing with Ji Baiqing, all because of the other woman’s unprovoked bias and care for her.
Seeing her fluffy long hair, Ji Baiqing couldn’t resist reaching out to ruffle it, whispering: “It’s okay. Like I said, I want to be your friend, and friends should look after each other.”
Watching her take small nibbles of the bun, Ji Baiqing asked, “Well? Is it good? I made them myself.”
Wen Miao was a bit of a picky eater. She took a bite of each flavor and seemed to like the leaf mustard ones best.
“I don’t like carrots.”
“Really?” Ji Baiqing was a bit surprised. Without hesitation, she took the carrot-filled bun and finished it in a few bites, completely unbothered by the fact that Wen Miao had already bitten into it.
Wen Miao stared at her blankly, a rosy flush creeping onto her face. she bit her lip, speechless.
I already ate from that… how could Ji Baiqing just keep eating it?
But seeing that the other woman didn’t seem to care at all, Wen Miao could only suppress her thoughts. Perhaps she was overthinking it.
Wen Miao was full after one bun. Ji Baiqing told her to keep the rest to reheat later if she got hungry, then helped her take her medicine.
Fortunately, it was only a low fever. By the time the IV was finished, the fever had subsided. Auntie Zhang told her to go back and rest for the day.
Knowing that Wen Miao was being isolated at the Youth Education Point, Ji Baiqing glanced at the glamorous beauty and coaxed her: “How about coming to my house to rest? I’ll make you something delicious to nourish your body. The other youths at your station aren’t good people; I’m afraid they’ll bully you.”
Hearing this, Wen Miao was slightly stunned.
After a long silence, she finally asked, her voice still a bit dry, “How do you know they aren’t good people?”
Ji Baiqing’s voice carried a tone of “it goes without saying”: “You hate them, so they must have done something bad.”
Wen Miao: “…What if I hate you?”
Ji Baiqing’s eyes curved, her calm, dark eyes reflecting Wen Miao’s silhouette. “I guess you probably don’t hate me.”
Feeling exposed under that gaze, Wen Miao instinctively looked away, her tone becoming a bit annoyed. “Who said? I do hate you!”
Ji Baiqing thought she really was like a cat currently trying to use brash language to hide her inner insecurity.
She softened her voice. “Alright, since you aren’t refusing, I’ll take that as a ‘yes’ to coming home with me. It’s just for a rest, don’t worry.”
Wen Miao’s body was still weak. After getting off the bed, her legs felt like jelly. She could only bury her face in Ji Baiqing’s chest as she was carried home.
A faint, fresh scent lingered at the tip of her nose, only dissipating once she was placed on the bed.
“Rest for a while, I’ll go get you some water.”
After Ji Baiqing left the room, Wen Miao scanned her surroundings.
Unlike the dilapidated Youth Education Point, Ji Baiqing’s home was a brick-and-tile house. She was clearly well-loved at home; the bed, table, and cabinets in the room were all there, crafted from solid wood and looking quite new.
The temperature fluctuated wildly in April, and the nights were cold, but the mattress on the bed was thick and soft.
Why would a person like this go out of her way to be kind to a stranger like me?
Wen Miao didn’t actually believe Ji Baiqing’s explanation. Who wants to be friends with someone after just one meeting?
Unless it was love at first sight.
At that thought, Wen Miao paused. She suddenly remembered a new notice her grandmother mentioned before she left for the countryside: same-sex registration was about to become legal.
Everything suddenly seemed to have an explanation.
Did Ji Baiqing fall in love with me at first sight?
Wen Miao gave a soft “hmpf.” The gap between her and Ji Baiqing was too large; there was no way they could be together. Ji Baiqing should just give up sooner rather than later.
She lay on the soft bed. The package from her grandmother hadn’t arrived yet, and her bedding from the night before was thin; as someone who grew up pampered, she had slept very uncomfortably. After her mind wandered for a bit, sleepiness washed over her. She couldn’t keep her heavy eyelids open and drifted off to sleep in the unfamiliar bed.
Thinking of Wen Miao’s illness, Ji Baiqing prepared something light separately. Since her parents worked the fields, they preferred heavier flavors.
Steaming the cured meat would take some time. She returned to the room to check on Wen Miao, who was sleeping obediently with red-flushed cheeks. A sense of satisfaction filled her heart.
Luckily, she had transmigrated here. Otherwise, Wen Miao would have been bullied to death by the original female and male leads.
Once the cooking was done, she took a walk to the fields. Seeing Lu Yan and the others looking wretched while hauling manure, and Shen Niannian and her group looking ready to cry while weeding in the heat, she instantly felt much better.
At noon, He Xiangyue and Ji Wei returned from work.
Seeing several extra dishes on the table, He Xiangyue found it strange. “Why did you make two bowls of the same dish?”
Ji Baiqing beamed. “Mom, didn’t you tell me to bring Wen Miao back for you to see? I brought her back today; she’s in my room.”
He Xiangyue: “…”
Ji Baiqing didn’t catch He Xiangyue’s speechless expression. Once Ji Wei arrived, she brought up a bucket of water, washed her hands, and went to wake Wen Miao.
When Wen Miao came out of the room and saw He Xiangyue and Ji Wei, she felt a bit awkward.
Ji Baiqing introduced them: “Wen Miao, these are my parents. Mom, Dad, this is the friend I told you about.”
“Hello, Auntie. Hello, Uncle Ji,” Wen Miao greeted them stiffly.
Ji Wei nodded, but He Xiangyue—who was just as much of a “visual person” as her daughter—widened her eyes at the sight of such a beautiful girl. She immediately greeted her warmly. “Wen Miao! Come, sit down and eat.”
Wen Miao sat between Ji Baiqing and He Xiangyue. He Xiangyue moved the egg drop soup Ji Baiqing had made in front of Wen Miao. “Baiqing told me you have a fever. Drink some hot soup and sweat it out.”
“I know it hasn’t been easy for you coming all this way to our village. Wen, if you ever need anything, just come find our Baiqing. Don’t be a stranger!”
He Xiangyue was kind-hearted by nature. Seeing that Wen Miao was a delicate, beautiful girl who didn’t speak with any hint of arrogance, her liking for the girl grew instantly.
Listening to He Xiangyue’s motherly nagging, Wen Miao lowered her head. Her eyes grew misty, and her nose felt a bit stingy.
It had been a long time since she felt care that was no different from that of a biological mother.
Just as she was feeling emotional, Ji Baiqing suddenly placed a piece of bamboo shoot in her bowl. “These were just picked yesterday. Very fresh, try some.”
Wen Miao quietly sniffed and whispered her thanks.
After the meal, Ji Wei proactively went to wash the dishes, leaving the three women to chat.
He Xiangyue looked Wen Miao up and down, finding her more beautiful the more she looked. She tsk-tsked and asked:
“Miaomiao, you’re such a delicate girl. How could your parents bear to send you to the countryside?”
He Xiangyue was very naturally familiar, using a nickname that even Ji Baiqing hadn’t used yet.
Wen Miao, surprisingly, wasn’t as resistant to her. “My mother has passed away. My father and stepmother found a job for my younger stepsister. I didn’t have a job, so I had to come here.”
Hearing this, Ji Baiqing looked at Wen Miao with heartache and gave her shoulder a comforting rub.
He Xiangyue, being blunt, started cursing immediately. “That father of yours is a piece of work! Treating someone else’s daughter better than his own. Miaomiao, don’t worry about him from now on! Let him fend for himself when he’s old.”
Wen Miao thought of Li Wenyu, a flash of disgust crossing her eyes. “I’m afraid that stepdaughter is his own flesh and blood too.”
Ji Baiqing looked at Wen Miao’s thin frame, then glanced at He Xiangyue. “Wen Miao, you can treat this place as your home from now on. My parents really like you.”
He Xiangyue was startled for a second but quickly agreed. “That’s right! I felt a connection the moment I saw you. Miaomiao, don’t think about that father of yours. If you’re willing, you can treat me and my old man as your mom and dad.”
Wen Miao bit her lip. Looking at He Xiangyue’s sincere eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse and simply nodded.
She turned her head away, feeling a bit of silent complaint toward Ji Baiqing. They weren’t even together yet, and Ji Baiqing already wanted her to treat her parents as her own.
Having been “glared at” by Wen Miao, Ji Baiqing rubbed the tip of her nose. Her heart felt a bit itchy; she felt that Wen Miao’s look wasn’t a glare at all. Those beautiful, seductive peach-blossom eyes were like hooks, and the beauty mark under her eye was particularly striking.
She really wanted to pinch Wen Miao’s cheek—it must be very soft.
They chatted a bit longer, and Wen Miao relaxed significantly in front of the two.
Since there was work to be done in the afternoon, He Xiangyue went to her room for a nap. Seeing that Wen Miao was still unwell, Ji Baiqing urged her to get back into bed for more rest.
Wen Miao buried half her face under the covers, watching Ji Baiqing warily, afraid she might try to get into bed and sleep with her.
Ji Baiqing’s heart softened at that little look. In the end, she couldn’t resist leaning forward to pinch her cheek. It was exactly as soft as she had imagined.
Wen Miao’s eyes widened instantly. A flustered red flush climbed up her fair skin, and her brow furrowed, looking quite displeased.
“You pinched me!”
Ji Baiqing looked innocent, offering a thin smile. “It was just a pinch, it doesn’t even hurt. Why so stingy?”
“Alright, get some rest. I won’t sleep with you.”
Hearing this, Wen Miao didn’t fully relax until she saw Ji Baiqing leave the room. Only then did she drop her guard and slowly close her eyes.
Ji Baiqing didn’t have the habit of napping. After weeding her own vegetable garden, she headed up the mountain.
She noticed Wen Miao liked bamboo shoots, so she planned to pick some more. It had been raining lately, so she could also gather wood ear mushrooms.
She was experiencing the joy of a “cat owner” for the first time. Although the newly brought-home kitty wasn’t familiar with its owner yet and was extremely guarded, seeing the kitten have a slightly better attitude while being fed brought her a whole day of happiness.
She thought to herself: I have to raise Wen Miao well and feed her until she’s a bit plumper. She’ll be even more comfortable to hold then.
