- Chapter 22 - Lush Are Its Leaves
Before opening the door, she knocked first to alert the person inside. “Wen Miao, I’m coming in.”
There was no sound from within, so Ji Baiqing took it as tacit consent and pushed the door open.
After moving into the Ji family home to live with Ji Baiqing, the usually principled Wen Miao couldn’t withstand the other’s persistent badgering. Eventually, she had placed her frequently worn clothes into Ji Baiqing’s wardrobe.
The clothes of two different styles and sizes were stacked together, and even the unique scents on the fabric began to rub off on each other. Every time Ji Baiqing took her own clothes out of the wardrobe, she could catch a faint, lingering fragrance of roses.
Upon entering the room, however, she saw Wen Miao folding her clothes, taking them out of the cabinet one by one.
Seeing this, Ji Baiqing felt a surge of panic. She blocked Wen Miao’s path and asked in a low voice, “What are you doing?”
Wen Miao kept her head down, not wanting to show her red, watery eyes. She had originally decided not to cry anymore, but when facing Ji Baiqing, she couldn’t control her tear glands.
Forcing her heart to grow cold, Wen Miao replied in a flat tone, “I’m moving back to the youth education center.”
Ji Baiqing immediately refused. “No, you can’t!”
Why move back to the youth education center? Weren’t they living together perfectly well?
Taking advantage of her superior strength, she stuffed the clothes Wen Miao had taken out back into the cabinet all at once.
Seeing this, Wen Miao remained silent but made a move to take the clothes out again.
In short, she was being stubborn with Ji Baiqing.
One was taking them out, the other was putting them back; Wen Miao showed no intention of taking a step back.
Finally, Ji Baiqing simply extended her long arms and held Wen Miao tightly, her voice filled with pleading:
“Wen Miao, tell me exactly where I made you angry, okay?”
“I’m begging you.”
Ji Baiqing was dying of grievance. It had taken so much shameless effort to get the “vicious female supporting character” to lower her guard and become friends. Now, all that previous effort had been wasted overnight.
Sadness welled up in her heart, and she let out a sob.
“Waaa, Wen Miao, you’re so mean!”
“You, hic, why are you so cruel? What did I do wrong?”
She was truly aggrieved beyond words. She hadn’t cried even when facing much greater hardships before, but at the thought of the precarious friendship between her and Wen Miao, Ji Baiqing really couldn’t hold it back.
Faced with a calm Ji Baiqing, Wen Miao could have remained cold and refused to communicate. She wanted to preserve some of her dignity.
But as soon as Ji Baiqing cried, Wen Miao lost her resolve at the sight of those crystal-clear, transparent tears.
In her eyes, tears, which she usually found most useless, could now easily touch her heart.
While her heart ached, Wen Miao didn’t understand. She hadn’t even cried yet, so why had Ji Baiqing started crying first?
Feeling the other person holding her tighter and tighter, to the point where her ribs were being squeezed and she could barely breathe, she frowned. After some hesitation, she still reached out and patted Ji Baiqing’s shoulder.
“Alright now, you’re a grown-up, why are you always crying?”
She wanted Ji Baiqing to look on the bright side, but as soon as she opened her mouth, she realized her own nasal cavity was so sore that she couldn’t say anything else.
At this moment, Ji Baiqing was clearly in a state where she couldn’t listen to anything.
Wen Miao felt dejected. Right, she couldn’t even look on the bright side herself, so what right did she have to tell others to do so?
The body in her arms softened a bit, no longer as stiff as before.
Guessing that Wen Miao would soften her heart toward her current state, Ji Baiqing raised a pair of misty, tearful eyes and forced her wet eyelids open to act spoiled. “Wen Miao, Sister, tell me where I was wrong, okay? I don’t want to be separated from you.”
“Don’t go, please.”
Hearing those words, Wen Miao’s heart trembled slightly. She pursed her moist red lips, her cheeks flushing.
Did she really not want to be separated? Then what was the deal with her “Wenwen”?
Ultimately, she couldn’t withstand the soft words. Wen Miao squeezed her fingers, regaining some clarity after feeling the pain in her knuckles, and pushed her away. “Let go of me first.”
Ji Baiqing knew when to stop. She wiped away her tears, withdrew her hands, and stood up straight.
“Wen Miao, just tell me. I will definitely change.”
Wen Miao looked down at her pink fingertips, not daring to look up at Ji Baiqing.
She opened and closed her lips several times, but in the end, it was still difficult to speak.
If the real reason were told, it would seem trivial.
She worried that something she found important would make Ji Baiqing think she was embarrassing or narrow-minded once she heard it.
Ji Baiqing poked her shoulder and urged, “Sister, hurry up and say it!”
Wen Miao’s gaze couldn’t help but drift to those slender fingers. Ji Baiqing was not only tall, but her fingers were also long and well-defined. Her skin was very pale; when she lifted heavy objects, the muscles in her arms would bulge, and the faint blue veins on the back of her hands were particularly distinct.
Realizing what she was thinking, she withdrew her gaze as if burned, her face incredibly hot.
After some murmuring and under Ji Baiqing’s burning gaze, Wen Miao finally spoke: “Because of, Li Wenwen.”
Ji Baiqing’s eyebrows shot up. So the reason Wen Miao was angry wasn’t because of her, but because of someone else?
So she had been taking the blame for someone else?
“What’s wrong with Li Wenwen?”
After asking this, Wen Miao fell silent again.
This matter would sound too strange to others; such a small thing was perhaps only something Wen Miao would care about. If Ji Baiqing knew the reason, she would surely think she was being inexplicable.
Seeing her fall silent, Ji Baiqing grew anxious and squeezed her fingers. “Wen Miao, hurry and tell me!”
Hearing this form of address, Wen Miao looked up and asked her, “What do you call Li Wenwen?”
Ji Baiqing: “Li Wenwen.”
Wen Miao shook her head while staring at her. “No, that’s not what you called her before.”
Ji Baiqing thought about it and opened her mouth hesitantly: “Wenwen?”
After saying this name, it was as if Ji Baiqing’s mind was suddenly cleared.
“You’re upset because you think I call you Wen Miao but call someone else Wenwen?”
Wen Miao’s voice was as faint as a mosquito: “That’s only part of it.”
Seeing her shy appearance, Ji Baiqing instantly felt she was deathly cute. She grabbed her in a hug and whispered several nicknames into her ear: “Miaomiao, Sister, Wenwen. What do you like me to call you?”
The woman’s voice was lazy, with a hint of low-pitched magnetism. Wen Miao’s ears grew hot, and it felt as if an electric current was surging through her body. Half of her body went numb, and her limbs felt soft in Ji Baiqing’s arms.
She wanted to push Ji Baiqing away, but the woman was like a piece of sticky candy, not moving an inch, and kept asking, “What do you like me to call you?”
Finally, after hesitating for a long while, Wen Miao told the other her childhood name.
“Ji Baiqing, my childhood name is Zhenzhen. From ‘Lush are its leaves’ (Qi ye zhen zhen).”
When Wen Miao was born, she was like a little kitten. Others said she would be hard to raise and should be given a “cheap name” to ward off bad luck. Her mother, Wen Lingyue, hoped she would grow up strong but didn’t want her to be ridiculed for having an ugly name later, so she gave her this childhood name.
“Zhenzhen,” Ji Baiqing repeated the two characters in her mouth several times. Finally, her eyes curved into a smile. “That’s truly a beautiful name.”
She smiled. “Then I’ll call you Zhenzhen from now on. You’re not angry anymore, right?”
Wen Miao said in a muffled voice, “You can’t call me by my childhood name in public. You can only call me that when it’s just the two of us.”
Ji Baiqing nodded obediently.
“So what was the other part of it?”
Perhaps Ji Baiqing’s gentleness gave her courage, as Wen Miao was no longer so resistant to speaking her mind.
She looked at Ji Baiqing, her gaze filled with reproach:
“You said you would only be friends with me.”
“But, Li Wenwen said she is your friend.”
“You lied to me. Liar.” As she said the last word, Wen Miao clenched her hands, staring at Ji Baiqing, insistent on getting an answer.
Hearing this, Ji Baiqing felt a bit awkward.
Being watched by Wen Miao’s clear eyes, she felt a sense of guilt and finally squeezed out a sentence.
“But, a person can’t have only one friend.”
Wen Miao frowned. “I only have you as a friend.”
After saying this, Wen Miao herself was stunned. The “friend” she was thinking of was equated with “girlfriend.” Saying this proved that in her heart, she had already accepted Ji Baiqing.
Does she really, like Ji Baiqing?
