- Chapter 16 - A Strong Scent of Jealousy
On the road, seeing Wen Miao’s mood shift from excitement to low spirits, Ji Baiqing whispered to her, “Wen Miao, what’s wrong?”
Wen Miao shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
Ji Baiqing felt a bit helpless; seeing her looking so dejected, it didn’t seem like “nothing.” So, what exactly was making her unhappy? Through their time together, she had learned that the “vicious female supporting character” had a sensitive personality and was easily affected by the things happening around her.
She thought about it and suddenly had a realization. “Are you missing your mother?”
Wen Miao froze, then nodded after a moment.
“Well, Auntie He is very good to you.”
“Your mother must have been very good to you too. Being able to give you so much money means you are her precious darling. So you should be happy; otherwise, if your mother’s soul in heaven sees you sad, she’ll be very sad too.”
Is that so? Wen Miao looked at Ji Baiqing half-doubtingly.
Then, the flesh of her cheek was pinched, and a light laugh sounded in her ear.
“Come on, give your mom a smile.”
Wen Miao swatted her hand away, then lowered her head, the corners of her lips curling slightly. Having heard her say that, her mood felt much better.
By the time Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao reached the village entrance, there weren’t many people on the ox cart, just two familiar aunties. After giving Uncle Niu two cents, Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao sat down on the cart. Soon, two or three more people paid and boarded.
An auntie with a mole near her mouth sized up Wen Miao and Ji Baiqing from head to toe. “Yo, isn’t this Youth Wen? Usually, we never see you when there’s work to do, but now that it’s a day off, where are you going all dressed up so enchantingly?”
Wen Miao replied indifferently, “Wherever you’re going, I’m going.”
“You!” The woman with the mole was choked into silence.
Ji Baiqing rubbed the back of Wen Miao’s hand, looking at the person opposite them with an unkind expression. “Auntie, did you forget to use tooth powder when you brushed your teeth before coming out today?”
The auntie asked suspiciously, “How did you know?”
Those around them who understood the joke burst into laughter. Ji Baiqing suppressed a smile. “Otherwise, your mouth wouldn’t be so smelly.”
“If you don’t know how to speak, you can just stay quiet.”
The woman with the mole turned bright red and finally stopped talking.
At five-thirty, seeing that no more people were coming, Uncle Niu prepared to head for town. Just as they were about to leave, a voice suddenly came from behind.
“Wait for us!”
It sounded familiar. Ji Baiqing looked back and saw it was Shen Niannian and陆延 (Lu Yan). Seeing their intimate posture, were they already together now?
Ji Baiqing looked at them, recalling the plot of the original book in her mind. If she remembered correctly, in the early stages, Shen Niannian made money by selling things on the black market. It wasn’t until she encountered Lu Yan on her way to the black market once and let him know her secret that the two gradually became closer.
Wen Miao noticed Ji Baiqing’s gaze lingering on Shen Niannian for a long time without moving away, and for a moment, she felt annoyed.
She thought: Ji Baiqing likes women, and Shen Niannian is also a beautiful woman. Although she wasn’t as breathtakingly stunning as herself, she had a different kind of pure beauty.
Did Ji Baiqing now think Shen Niannian looked good and wanted to change targets? Thinking of this, Wen Miao felt uncomfortable. She pinched Ji Baiqing, who looked back at the culprit in pain.
Wen Miao: “Your eyeballs are about to fall out.”
There was a sourness in her voice that she hadn’t even noticed herself.
Ji Baiqing looked straight at her and finally burst out laughing. She made a motion as if fanning the air and whispered to her, “Do you smell that? A huge scent of jealousy?”
Wen Miao: “What?”
Once she realized the meaning behind Ji Baiqing’s words, she gave her a fierce glare. Ji Baiqing was now smiling as she soothed the “exploding kitten.”
“Don’t worry, Wen Miao. I’ll only be friends with you.”
Wen Miao gave a soft huff and didn’t speak again.
Uncle Niu stopped to let Shen Niannian and Lu Yan board. Once the two got on, the back seat visibly pressed down. Actually, taking an ox cart to town wasn’t much faster than walking, but the main point was that it wasn’t as tiring.
It took over an hour to reach the town. Xining Town wasn’t big; compared to Beijing, it was tiny. But having just arrived in town, Wen Miao was still quite curious. Everything around looked very different from Beijing.
Ji Baiqing hadn’t been to town in a long time either. She glanced at the watch on her hand; it wasn’t even eight o’clock yet.
“The post office isn’t open yet. Let’s go have breakfast first.”
Wen Miao nodded first, then her gaze moved to Ji Baiqing’s slender wrist, and she frowned. “Why aren’t you wearing the watch I gave you?” It wasn’t easy to come to town, and for the sake of showing respect, Ji Baiqing had even specially changed into nice clothes she rarely wore. Why wasn’t she wearing that exquisite watch? She hadn’t seen Ji Baiqing wear it usually; she probably took it off the moment she got home the day it was given.
Ji Baiqing clicked her tongue. “I’m afraid of bumping or scratching it. My heart would ache so much.”
Wen Miao: “If it’s broken, just buy another one. Aren’t things meant to be used?”
“But this is the second gift you’ve given me,” Ji Baiqing said, looking at her.
Wen Miao quickly looked away. “Al, alright then.”
She was incredibly annoyed. Clearly, Ji Baiqing was three years younger than her, so why did she always sound like she was deliberately flirting every time she spoke?
Ji Baiqing didn’t know what Wen Miao was thinking. She looked left and right and saw a large sign for the “State-Owned Restaurant.”
“Come on, let’s go eat.”
In these times, everyone was poor. The prices at the state-owned restaurant were affordable, but people from the countryside couldn’t bear to spend money there when they came to town. Only city people with “iron rice bowls” (stable jobs) would come for a meal when they didn’t feel like cooking. Even so, there was already a long line at the restaurant.
After queuing for over ten minutes, it was their turn. Looking at today’s breakfast menu, she asked Wen Miao what she wanted to eat. After getting a reply, she spoke loudly to the comrade at the front desk: “One bowl of soup noodles and one bowl of braised noodles, both with eggs!”
The two together cost twelve cents, which wasn’t too expensive. After ordering, Ji Baiqing found a seat by the window. Knowing Wen Miao was a germaphobe, she took out a handkerchief to wipe the table.
While waiting for the noodles to be served, Ji Baiqing looked out the window. It was time for work, and crowds of people were coming and going on the road, either carrying cloth bags or rushing home after buying groceries. A few individuals could be seen riding bicycles, looking very high-spirited.
Wen Miao noticed Ji Baiqing’s gaze lingering on the bicycles and lowered her head thoughtfully.
Before long, two bowls of noodles were served. The bowls at the state-owned restaurant were as big as heads, and the noodles and soup were almost level with the rim. In short, it was worth it.
She started slurping her noodles loudly over there, while Wen Miao’s movements were slow. Freshly cooked noodles were hot. Knowing Wen Miao had a “cat’s tongue” (sensitive to heat) and was afraid of being burned by anything she ate, Ji Baiqing went to get an extra bowl to portion out a small amount from Wen Miao’s bowl.
“Eat the smaller portion first; it cools down faster.”
Having said that, she continued eating from her own bowl. When she was almost finished, she asked Wen Miao as an afterthought: “Do you want to try mine? It’s quite tasty.”
Her bowl had a large spoonful of chili oil and green onions added; the red and green looked very appetizing. After struggling internally for a bit, Wen Miao nodded. Just as she was about to reach out with her chopsticks, Ji Baiqing picked up some noodles, blew on them, and brought them to Wen Miao’s lips.
