Transmigrated as the Husband of a Vicious Villainess - Chapter 15
Feeling Wen Miao’s nervous energy, Ji Baiqing was momentarily stunned before she quickly smiled and replied, “Sure thing.”
Looking at Wen Miao’s bashful expression, Ji Baiqing’s hands felt itchy again; she wanted to pinch the girl’s cheek. She managed to restrain herself, settling for a verbal tease:
“So, our Wen Miao is already willing to introduce me to her family.”
Wen Miao bit her lip and didn’t argue, but after a long pause, she emphasized pointedly: “Just as friends! Don’t go getting any other ideas!”
Ji Baiqing didn’t quite catch the hidden implication in the beauty’s words, but that didn’t stop her from nodding. She poked fun at Wen Miao once more:
“I didn’t realize you liked me so much already.”
Ji Baiqing meant this sincerely. From her perspective, Wen Miao’s willingness to open up her heart to a friend of less than a month could only be described with one term: “Silly-Sweet.”
She was nothing like a villainous antagonist.
Wen Miao’s ears turned crimson at the remark. She ended up kneeling on the bed, leaning forward to press her hand over Ji Baiqing’s mouth. She grumbled with annoyance, “You’re not allowed to say another word!”
“Mmph-mmph!” Ji Baiqing, successfully silenced, made muffled noises to signal she wouldn’t tease her further.
After playing around for a bit, both were tired. As they lay in bed, Ji Baiqing caught the familiar fragrance wafting from Wen Miao. She twitched her nose, taking a deep sniff, before settling in for a peaceful sleep.
After the Qingming Festival, the workload in the fields increased. The southern plot needed re-tilling and seeding, leaving He Xiangyue and Ji Wei so busy their feet barely touched the ground.
Compared to them, Wen Miao and Ji Baiqing looked like they were just there for the free meals. During this period, Ji Baiqing had to be extra careful with her words; if she accidentally annoyed He Xiangyue, she’d get an earful.
Wen Miao was mostly fine, but seeing Ji Baiqing acting so cautiously kept her on edge as well. To fulfill their share of the duties, the two took over the cooking every day and delivered the meals directly to the fields.
Under Ji Baiqing’s tutelage at the stove, Wen Miao even learned how to stir-fry. While her cooking couldn’t be called gourmet, it was perfectly edible. For a pampered lady who had never even touched kitchen grease before, it was massive progress.
By the time the last batch of seeds and fertilizer was spread before the dry season arrived, the heavy burden on everyone finally lifted. The Village Chief granted a two-day break, meaning Ji Baiqing’s promise to take Wen Miao to town could finally be fulfilled.
Ji Baiqing originally wanted to take the whole family along, but He Xiangyue waved the idea away. “Your father and I are worked to the bone, daughter. Just let us catch our breath.”
Fair enough. Ji Baiqing had He Xiangyue dictate a list of necessities for her to write down. The night before their trip, she huddled close to Wen Miao to discuss what they needed to buy.
First on the list was meat—everyone needed a boost in nutrition. Then there were seasonings, high-quality flour, washbasins… the list grew until it filled a large sheet of paper.
The next morning, before the sun was even up, He Xiangyue knocked on their door to wake them.
In a state of half-sleep, Ji Baiqing gave a few muffled responses before drifting off again. Fortunately, Wen Miao woke up and gently roused her. When Ji Baiqing opened her eyes, she was greeted by the sight of the great beauty. She squinted, her voice raspy and soft. “A wake-up call from a beauty?”
Wen Miao huffed and tossed the blanket over her face. “Get up, now.”
Ji Baiqing knew better than to push her luck when the beauty was on the verge of real anger. She crawled out of bed, stretched, and shuffled outside in her slippers.
He Xiangyue had already brought out their shared washbasin and poured warm water for them. Seeing Ji Baiqing squinting and walking straight toward the well, she called out, “I poured the water for you! What kind of girl uses cold water on her face all year round? You’ll be crying about it when your cycle comes.”
Ji Baiqing turned back and gave her a fawning smile.
After a quick brush with tooth powder and a perfunctory face wash, Ji Baiqing went to change. Wen Miao was already dressed and waiting for her to do her hair. Since the first time Ji Baiqing tried it, she had become the beauty’s personal hairstylist.
“Wait a second, Wen Miao.” Ji Baiqing went back to the room and changed into a floral top and earth-colored trousers. Although they had a few patches, it was the best outfit in her wardrobe. If it weren’t for Ji Baiqing’s height and fair skin, the outfit would have looked dreadful.
Even so, Wen Miao looked her up and down with a dissatisfied expression, though she said nothing and simply let Ji Baiqing work on her hair.
Ji Baiqing found Wen Miao’s look for today exceptionally pleasing to the eye. The weather was heating up, with temperatures hitting nearly 30°C. Wen Miao wore a blue, waist-cinching sleeveless dress, revealing her slender, porcelain-white arms. A delicate necklace hung around her neck, its star pendant resting perfectly in the hollow of her collarbone.
The dress suited Wen Miao perfectly, emphasizing her curves and her noble aura. Ji Baiqing thought she looked like a celebrity; in the future, she could have gone viral on the internet just by standing there.
Ji Baiqing tried two different hairstyles, looking at her from various angles, but something still felt off. Wen Miao started to get impatient, lightly tugging on a strand of Ji Baiqing’s hair that fell in her face as she leaned over.
“Are you done yet? We’ll miss the transport if we’re any later.”
Sensing the worry in her voice, Ji Baiqing soothed her: “It’s fine, we woke up early. I’m almost done.”
She decided to let Wen Miao’s long hair down, draping it to the sides to partially cover her arms. She rummaged through Wen Miao’s jewelry box, found a pair of pearl earrings and a pearl clip, and added them. Finally, she clapped her hands in satisfaction.
“Wen Miao, you’re truly beautiful.”
Even though she was used to Ji Baiqing’s bluntness, Wen Miao still felt a bit awkward. Many people had praised her looks before, but her reaction to Ji Baiqing was always the strangest.
“Alright, let’s go,” Wen Miao said, changing the subject.
“Right, wait for me.”
Ji Baiqing grabbed He Xiangyue’s military-green messenger bag, stuffed a hemp sack inside for extra carrying capacity, and hurried to the courtyard. She took Wen Miao’s hand. “Let’s go.”
“Hey! Aren’t you eating breakfast before you leave?” He Xiangyue shouted, leaning out the door.
Ji Baiqing waved her off without turning back. “You and Dad eat! We’ll eat in town!”
“Such a spendthrift girl!” He Xiangyue grumbled, but she chased after them anyway to press ten yuan into Ji Baiqing’s hand. “Buy whatever you want, don’t worry about the money.” After all, all their hard work was for their daughter.
Ji Baiqing didn’t stand on ceremony; she took it with a grin. “Mom, you’re the best~”
He Xiangyue gave her a mock-reproachful look. “Go on, then.”
Ji Baiqing pulled Wen Miao toward the village entrance. They were taking the ox cart today; Uncle Niu was already waiting there with his team.
