- Chapter 10 - Wen Miao, You Smell So Good
Wen Miao’s belongings had all been hand-picked by her aunts and grandmother. Even her soap carried her favorite rose fragrance, and her clothes were of exquisite style. All those bits and pieces added up to a total of 180 yuan.
It was enough to buy a brand-new Phoenix bicycle!
Wen Miao didn’t even want to look at Lu Yan. “Everything has been calculated at eighty percent of its original value. Whoever used what, make sure you pay me back.”
The faces of Shen Niannian and Pan Hongxia turned pale the moment they saw the bill. Pan Hongxia’s lips trembled, her eyes filled with a pleading gaze as she looked at Wen Miao.
“Wen Miao, can I just give the clothes back? I was wrong; I shouldn’t have taken your things. But you know I… I can’t come up with that much money…”
Pan Hongxia was an old acquaintance of Wen Miao’s. They had lived near each other back home, though one lived in a private courtyard house while the other lived in a crowded tenement. Pan Hongxia was the unloved middle child of her family.
But none of that mattered to Wen Miao. Whatever friendship they had once possessed had been worn away by the times Pan Hongxia remained silent just to fit in, or joined in on the slanders against her.
Wen Miao knit her brows and refused. “That has nothing to do with me. If you couldn’t afford the value of the clothes, you shouldn’t have used my things without my permission in the first place.”
Pan Hongxia’s eyes instantly reddened. She suddenly turned to Fang Haiyang, her finger trembling as she pointed at him. “It was him! He said I looked good in that dress of yours, so I… I lost my mind and took it!”
If Fang Haiyang hadn’t said that, she surely wouldn’t have dared to touch Wen Miao’s things.
Fang Haiyang stood up immediately, raising a fist as if to strike her. He roared, “You wench! Did I force you to steal? You did it yourself!”
Seeing the fist about to land on her face, Pan Hongxia’s body went rigid, and she squeezed her eyes shut in terror.
However, the expected blow never came. Instead, she heard a sharp howl of pain from Fang Haiyang.
When she opened her eyes, Fang Haiyang was clutching his groin with a pained expression, his eyes full of hatred as he glared at Wen Miao.
Wen Miao calmly retracted her leg and offered a thin smile. “Fang Haiyang, you stole my things too, and now you’re trying to hit someone out of shame? Is it fun to be the pot calling the kettle black?”
“Anyway, figure out a way to get this money together within a week. Otherwise, I’ll report you to the police directly and have all you thieves arrested.”
With that, she turned and walked back into her room, ignoring the looks on their faces.
Looking around the messy room, Wen Miao let out a long sigh. She wasn’t a fool; she knew how important “fitting in” was. But from the very start, Shen Niannian and the others had put her on the opposing side.
Now that the masks were off and they had completely fallen out, Wen Miao had to reconsider the feasibility of moving in with Ji Baiqing.
Her main point of hesitation was that the Ji family was a complete unknown to her—there were too many uncertainties. If she eventually had a falling out with Ji Baiqing, would she have to move back here? By then, the Youth Education Point would truly have no room for her.
She didn’t feel she knew Ji Baiqing well enough yet. Moreover, she had always been someone people found difficult to like. How long could Ji Baiqing’s affection for her last? If she never responded to that affection, would Ji Baiqing eventually turn on her in anger?
Wen Miao didn’t know. She couldn’t find a definitive answer. Thinking about it gave her a headache.
Ji Baiqing… is she worth my trust?
While visiting the graves that afternoon, Ji Baiqing had gathered a good amount of wild mushrooms, mostly Green-Cracked Brittlegills, which were delicious when stewed with meat.
In addition, she and He Xiangyue had brought back a large hemp sack full of bamboo shoots. Seeing the house empty, she guessed Wen Miao had gone back to the station.
Since it wasn’t dinner time yet, she didn’t rush to call the beauty. Instead, she sat by the door with He Xiangyue to peel the shoots. Even though they were free, peeling an entire bag took quite some time.
They couldn’t eat this many at once. They kept enough for a couple of meals and prepared the rest by blanching and draining them. Once dried into bamboo shoot jerky, they could be kept until winter. Not only could they be stewed with chicken, but they were also incredibly fragrant when stir-fried with pork.
By the time they finished, dusk had begun to settle. He Xiangyue started boiling the water, and Ji Baiqing drew a bucket from the well to wash her hands.
Usually, Wen Miao would have arrived by now. Ji Baiqing felt a prickle of worry. The village wasn’t large, but surely she hadn’t gotten lost?
Even though Wen Miao was an adult, Ji Baiqing couldn’t let it go. She told her parents and headed to the station.
When she arrived, Fang Haiyang rolled his eyes at her and said sarcastically, “You should just tell Wen Miao to stop living here. She acts like she’s made of gold every single day.”
Ji Baiqing grabbed him by the collar, her face dark. “Did you buy this house? Wen Miao can live wherever she wants. What does it have to do with you? Watch that big mouth of yours before I shut it for you.”
The memory of Ji Baiqing beating Lu Yan was still fresh in Fang Haiyang’s mind. Knowing she was a “monster” with freakish strength, his legs went weak, and he could only manage a shaky bit of bravado.
“Let… let me go! I didn’t do anything! If you dare hit me, I’ll tell the Village Chief!”
“Coward,” Ji Baiqing scoffed, releasing him. She knocked on the women’s door.
A moment later, Pan Hongxia opened the door, gave her a timid look, and scurried out. Inside, Shen Niannian saw who it was, tossed her handkerchief onto the bed with a roll of her eyes, and left as well.
The room was left to only Wen Miao and Ji Baiqing.
Ji Baiqing looked at Wen Miao sitting on the edge of the bed. She reached out to stroke the girl’s cheek, her voice no longer cold but filled with a gentle warmth. “What happened? Why do you look so unhappy?”
Wen Miao bit her lip. Her composed facade crumbled under Ji Baiqing’s tender inquiry, and her eyes instantly grew red. When she looked up at Ji Baiqing, her light-colored eyes were shimmering with tears, making her look heart-wrenchingly pitiful.
“Ji Baiqing… can I still come live at your house?”
Ji Baiqing blinked, thinking for a second that she had misheard. After all, Wen Miao’s attitude had always been resistant, afraid of being a burden. Ji Baiqing had spent quite a while feeling regretful over it.
She never expected the woman to change her mind now.
She sat down beside Wen Miao, tilting that pointed chin to look at her from both sides, using her thumb to brush away the moisture from the corners of her eyes.
“Why is our Miaomiao so upset?”
After a pause, she added, “As long as you’re willing, the door to my bedroom will always be open for you.”
Wen Miao turned her head, breaking free from the hold, and pressed her head into Ji Baiqing’s neck. She felt a bit ashamed; this was the second time she had cried in front of a woman younger than herself and had to be comforted.
“Okay,” she whispered.
The scent of the woman’s fragrance filled Ji Baiqing’s nose. She took advantage of the moment to breathe it in, sniffing around like a puppy.
Suddenly, she asked, “Wen Miao, what do you usually use? You smell so good.”
“…”
Wen Miao pushed her away with a expressionless face and spat out one word.
“Rogue.”
Ji Baiqing was a bit confused, she hadn’t said anything bad, had she? She just thought Wen Miao smelled nice. Can’t best friends appreciate each other’s scent?
However, seeing the faint pink on Wen Miao’s face, she thought that perhaps the “villainess” was just like this: saying one thing while feeling another, and being very easily embarrassed.
She decided she should be even more proactive to get Wen Miao used to being close with her!
