- Chapter 6 - My Wife, Wolfie
After a long silence, Ruan Nianning, still hearing no sound from the bedroom, went to check on her wife. There she found Huo Jianan sitting on the bed, rubbing her legs while quietly scrolling through her phone in the sunlight.
Ruan Nianning’s gaze stirred with curiosity once more.
Huo Jianan was extremely self-conscious about her legs. According to Housekeeper He, except when bathing, she even wore thin, breathable stockings that extended up to her thighs, concealed beneath the hem of her nightgown. Last night, on their wedding night, Ruan Nianning had massaged Huo Jianan’s legs as Grandmother Huo had instructed, to aid her recovery.
“She hates people looking at her legs, let alone touching them. But since she adores you so much, she might not resist your massage.”
Ruan Nianning had anticipated resistance, but she hadn’t expected Huo Jianan’s reaction to be so violent last night. Her shock and distress had been as if she were hearing about her leg disability for the first time.
Yet now, Huo Jianan, who had always avoided facing her leg disability, was actually massaging her own legs, and even seemed to be in a good mood.
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow. This wealthy young lady was truly unpredictable, her moods shifting like the weather.
Huo Jianan sensed someone had entered and looked up. Seeing it was Ruan Nianning, she smiled. “Wife, what are you looking at?”
Ruan Nianning cleared her throat and stepped inside. “Nothing much. I just came to check on you.”
“Don’t worry, I’m doing well.” Huo Jianan pointed to the water cup dangling from the cabinet. “Wife, tell Housekeeper He to get me a small water dispenser with both hot and cold options. Make sure the spout faces the bed. That way, I can reach over and pour my own water whenever I want.”
Ruan Nianning: “Just say the word, and Sister Wang or Sister Mei will get it for you.”
Huo Jianan smiled gently. “I’m disabled, not helpless. I can manage this myself.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
Huo Jianan seemed completely different.
“Young Miss!” The next moment, Housekeeper He appeared at the door, her face beaming with joy.
“Young Miss, what brings you here?”
“Madam sent me to see if you need anything, Young Miss, and to ask about dinner preferences.”
Housekeeper He took out a tablet and swiped her hand across the screen, revealing a long list of menu items.
“Wow!” Huo Jianan exclaimed, her spirits instantly lifting at this sophisticated way of ordering. “How’s this fish? Is it tasty? Any bones? And this chicken, and this… and this…”
Ruan Nianning watched silently from the side. Huo Jianan seemed in high spirits, her appetite voracious as she ordered six or seven dishes in a row. Suddenly remembering she hadn’t asked Ruan Nianning’s opinion, she hurriedly asked, “Wife, what would you like?”
“Wolfie” was the nickname Huo Jianan had mentally given Ruan Nianning.
“I’m fine with anything,” Ruan Nianning replied. “You decide.”
You decide again?
But Huo Jianan had only recently arrived in this world. How was she supposed to know what Ruan Nianning liked to eat or what she couldn’t eat?
Huo Jianan blinked and turned to Housekeeper He. “Do you have any recommendations for dishes the Young Madam likes?”
“How about coconut chicken?”
“Sounds good. Let’s have coconut chicken.”
“And sweet and sour pork tenderloin—the Young Madam has always liked that.”
“Perfect. That one’s a must. And two seasonal vegetables.”
“Very well, Young Miss.” Housekeeper He put away the tablet. “Would you like to dine in bed, or at the dining table?”
“At the dining table, I love looking at a big spread of dishes while I eat. It makes me feel so satisfied and happy.”
Thinking of the table laden with delicious food, Huo Jianan’s eyes sparkled with delight.
Housekeeper He found the Young Miss’s unusually cheerful mood a bit odd, but wasn’t this exactly what Madam and everyone else had hoped for?
Housekeeper He went out to instruct the chef about dinner. “Here’s tonight’s menu. The Young Miss’s and Young Madam’s dishes shouldn’t be too oily or salty—light but flavorful is best.”
After giving instructions to the chef, Housekeeper He called Grandmother Huo. “Madam, everything is well here with the Young Miss. Her appetite is excellent; she ordered several dishes she usually wouldn’t even look at. The Young Miss also said that just because she’s mobility-impaired doesn’t mean she can’t do anything. She asked us to prepare a small water dispenser so she can pour her own water.”
On the other end of the line, Grandmother Huo was silent for a long moment. “Did she really say that?”
“Yes, the Young Miss said it to the Young Madam. I happened to overhear.” Housekeeper He sighed. “Since her marriage, the Young Miss has truly changed. Just now, when I went to her room, she had drawn back all the curtains and was massaging her legs herself.”
“Really?”
“Yes, Madam, it’s true.”
Another silence from the other end of the line. “So, this marriage is still on track?” It sounded like a question directed at someone else, yet also like a muttered soliloquy.
Housekeeper He didn’t dare respond, simply holding the phone respectfully, awaiting Grandmother Huo’s further instructions.
“Take good care of them at the hospital these next few days.”
“Yes, Madam.”
Dinner was set up on the table outside the hospital room, and a small water dispenser was placed on the bedside table, its spout positioned directly facing the bed.
Sister Wang and Sister Mei moved to help the Young Miss transfer from the bed to her wheelchair, but Huo Jianan stopped them. “I can do it myself.”
She had just watched videos online about how disabled people could transfer from a bed to a wheelchair. Besides, her wheelchair had been custom-made by the world’s leading manufacturer, renowned for its quality and functionality.
She was grateful the Huo family had such deep pockets.
Huo Jianan first shifted herself to the edge of the bed, letting her legs dangle naturally. She gripped the wheelchair’s armrest with one hand and pushed off the bed with the other. Leaning forward and shifting her hips, she smoothly transferred into the wheelchair.
Sister Wang and Sister Mei stood by, their palms sweating with anxiety, fearing the Young Miss, still bandaged on her head, might fall. They breathed a sigh of relief as she safely settled into her wheelchair.
“See? I told you I could do it myself,” Huo Jianan said with a smile.
Housekeeper He, genuinely pleased, replied, “Yes, we were being overly worried and underestimated you, Young Miss.”
“Let’s go eat. I’m hungry.”
Ruan Nianning pushed her wheelchair toward the dining room.
Though this was a hospital, the suite was furnished like a presidential suite, complete with a master bedroom, secondary bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, and even a conference room. The country girl Huo Jianan couldn’t help but marvel at the luxury. If she hadn’t been reborn as a wealthy young lady, she never would have imagined hospital VIP suites could be this opulent.
Huo Jianan had a voracious appetite, sampling every dish and enjoying them all. She rarely turned down food, especially when it was made from such premium ingredients. Housekeeper He watched the Young Miss eat with such delight, her face practically glowing like a blooming flower.
Yet as Ruan Nianning observed Huo Jianan’s eyes light up with delight, her head practically buried in her bowl, a faint unease stirred within her.
Huo Jianan had always been indifferent to fine food, often needing coaxing to eat, sometimes requiring Ruan Nianning to feed her just a few bites.
But now? There was no need for Ruan Nianning to feed her. She even felt that in Huo Jianan’s eyes, the table laden with dishes was more alluring than she was.
Ruan Nianning’s anxiety intensified as she recalled how, earlier that day, she had kissed Wolfie, only to be met with a surprising lack of response—Wolfie had actually pushed her away.
“Wife, why aren’t you eating? Don’t you like the coconut chicken or sweet and sour pork?”
Huo Jianan noticed that her wife had barely touched her food. She kindly placed some chicken and pork on Wolfie’s plate. “I know celebrities are conscious of their figure, but health is important too. Eat something—you won’t gain weight.”
Huo Jianan smiled warmly at Wolfie. Her usually dark and lifeless eyes now sparkled with warmth and brightness, radiating comfort.
Ruan Nianning paused, then murmured in acknowledgment and turned to place a few vegetable leaves on Huo Jianan’s plate. “Eat some greens too. Don’t just stick to meat.”
“Got it.” Huo Jianan, who disliked vegetables, couldn’t refuse her wife’s concern and accepted the offering.
Truthfully, Wolfie wasn’t a bad person. She was loyal to her friends, kind-hearted, and generous. It was only when her rationality was consumed by hatred, driving her nearly insane, that she resorted to any means necessary.
Huo Jianan thought that once she unraveled the mystery behind Wolfie’s deep-seated grudge, Wolfie wouldn’t be manipulated anymore. She likely wouldn’t target the Huo family then. When the time came for a divorce, Huo Jianan would beg her grandmother to provide Wolfie with a generous settlement to live comfortably for the rest of her life.
