- Chapter 47.1 - Ruan Nianning, You've Taken Revenge on the Wrong Person
“Dada, what’s wrong? Why do I feel like something’s bothering you?”
“Me?” Huo Jianan’s lips twitched. “Nothing’s wrong.”
Wang Baobao was about to press further when a commotion erupted in the hospital corridor. Amid the nurses’ laughter, a tall doctor entered, carrying fruit and gift boxes.
Wang Baobao’s eyes widened. He tugged at Huo Jianan’s clothes. “Dada, it’s Doctor Sha! He’s brought so many gifts!”
Huo Jianan glanced at the useless coward. “I’m not blind. I can see.”
Doctor Jiang looked up. “Doctor Sha, what brings you here?”
“I heard Auntie was hospitalized. I thought I’d stop by and see her before I head home.”
Doctor Jiang smiled. “No need to be so formal. You’ve already visited once, and Mother is nearly fully recovered.”
Wang Baobao’s eyes widened in shock. “Dada, did you hear that? This Doctor Sha has been here before!”
“Calm down,” Huo Jianan said. “Don’t panic.”
Wang Baobao reluctantly settled back into his seat, pretending to be the perfect little boy.
“I wanted to make it up to you,” Doctor Sha said. “I was unprepared last time, and it was terribly inappropriate. These are some imported supplements from a classmate of mine. They’re perfect for Mother Jiang’s condition.”
Doctor Jiang shook his head. “No need, no need at all. Thank you.”
Doctor Sha insisted on visiting Mother Jiang with Doctor Jiang after work. True to his word, the moment Doctor Jiang bid farewell to Wang Baobao and Huo Jianan, Doctor Sha eagerly followed him to the hospital to see Mother Jiang.
Throughout the walk, Doctor Jiang continued to politely decline Doctor Sha’s enthusiasm. “Doctor Sha, we’re colleagues. Thank you for visiting my mother last time, and for bringing all these gifts this time. It really wasn’t necessary.”
Wang Baobao hurried to the door, then turned back and slumped down, looking dejected. His face twisted into a sour expression, even worse than a frown. “Dada, am I out of the running?”
Huo Jianan glanced at him. “Who said that? Didn’t you hear Doctor Jiang keeping him at bay?” She paused, exasperated. “Besides, Mother Jiang is sick and hospitalized. Why haven’t you gone to visit her?”
“I went once,” Wang Baobao replied. “But I was afraid going too often would be inappropriate. Dada, why don’t you come with me? We can visit in your name.”
Huo Jianan jabbed him in the head. “Coward! If I were Doctor Jiang, I wouldn’t want you around!”
The next day, when Wang Baobao returned to the hospital, he carried a backpack and a premium fruit basket.
“Doctor Jiang, I’m sorry I wasn’t in Changbin the past few days and didn’t know Auntie was hospitalized. I’d like to visit her today.”
Doctor Jiang was surprised that Huo Jianan wanted to visit her mother.
“Doctor Jiang, I don’t just see you as my primary physician, but also as a friend. Visiting Auntie will only take a few minutes and won’t disturb you for long. Baobao and I will go together.”
Doctor Jiang was initially puzzled, but upon hearing the last part, everything suddenly made sense. Her gaze shifted to Wang Baobao, who, like a blushing kitten, hid behind Huo Jianan.
As training was about to end, Huo Jianan received a call from Meng Xien, saying there was an urgent matter at the company and she needed to return immediately to handle it. The driver was already waiting to pick her up.
“My apologies, Doctor Jiang. I’m terribly sorry, but a sudden emergency at the company requires my immediate attention. I have to rush back.”
Wang Baobao’s eyes widened. “Dada, are you really leaving?”
Huo Jianan shot her an exasperated look. “Didn’t you say you needed to use the restroom? Go ahead. I need to talk to Doctor Jiang for a moment.”
Wang Baobao stood up and left immediately.
“Leave your bag here.”
“Oh.” Wang Baobao set down her bag and obediently left.
Huo Jianan opened her bag and pulled out a small box. “Doctor Jiang, you should recognize this medicine. It’s not particularly rare. Ever since Baobao heard that this could aid Auntie’s recovery, she’s been scouring half of Changbin to find it. Last night, she finally got this box from a friend.”
What Huo Jianan didn’t mention was that the “friend” was her. She’d taken the box from her grandmother and given it to Wang Baobao.
“This is too valuable. I can’t accept it.”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “It’s medicine, meant to heal. It’s Baobao’s heartfelt gesture. Please accept it.”
“Baobao’s a good kid, just a bit timid. She likes someone but can’t bring herself to say it, and she wants to visit her sick relative but doesn’t dare. But her intentions are sincere. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be speaking for this coward.”
Doctor Jiang chuckled softly. “Has Wang Baobao always been this timid?”
Huo Jianan laughed. “Not at all! Among our group of friends, she’s always outspoken and lively. It’s only in front of you, Doctor Jiang, that she becomes this timid and bewildered.”
Doctor Jiang smiled. “Perhaps I give off a fierce impression?”
“Not exactly. I get nervous around my sister, Nianning, too.”
“Miss Huo, are you afraid of Madam?”
“Not afraid. Everyone has their match. I bet Baobao will be just like me after he gets married. My principle is simple: as long as my wife is happy, everything’s fine.”
Doctor Jiang smiled and took the small box. “Thank you, Miss Huo. You’re truly Baobao’s good friend.”
As they parted, Huo Jianan glanced back at Wang Baobao, who was grinning foolishly as he followed Doctor Jiang, basket of fruit in hand. She also remembered Doctor Jiang’s subtle invitation. “I’ll treat you to a meal another day. Thank you.”
“Ah, no problem! It’s nothing. Don’t be so polite,” Wang Baobao blurted out. The moment the words left his mouth, he realized he’d rejected Doctor Jiang’s invitation to dinner, and he instantly regretted it. “I mean… I should be the one treating you. How could I let you pay?”
“Why can’t I treat you?”
“You work so hard for your money. I’m richer than you, so of course I should pay. Aiya, no, no, I’m not trying to show off in front of you. I just meant… Fine, you can treat me. Let’s go to that restaurant we went to last time. It was good.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Baobao, I can only help you this far. You’ll have to work hard. May you and Doctor Jiang blossom and bear fruit soon.
Late at night, Huo Jianan emerged from the bathroom, glancing at the time: 11 PM.
She and Ruan Nianning usually chatted around this hour, so she hurried out, afraid of missing Wolfie’s video call.
But as soon as she picked up her phone, she saw a new message from Ruan Nianning: Jianan, filming will run late today. I won’t be able to chat. Try to get some sleep. Goodnight.
The light in Huo Jianan’s eyes dimmed as she slowly set her phone aside.
No call? It seemed something serious must have come up. Even when busy, Ruan Nianning used to at least send a text, playfully complaining about her workload.
But on Christmas Eve, during her visit to the set, Ruan Nianning had smiled so brightly, hugged Niuniu tightly, kissed her repeatedly, and told her she loved her.
Huo Jianan pursed her lips, opened the hidden compartment in her wardrobe, took out the syringe, and calmly injected her legs. The usual pain—so intense it made her grit her teeth, tremble, and break out in a cold sweat—seemed almost bearable today.
Should I go check on Wolfie again? Huo Jianan wondered.
“Cut!” Director Zhang’s brow furrowed deeply as the announcement crackled through the speakers: “All groups, take a break. Ruan Nianning, come here.”
Calling her by both name and surname made it clear that Director Zhang had reached his limit and his temper was flaring.
Ruan Nianning approached, fully aware that her performance over the past two days had been subpar, even downright poor.
The crew instinctively retreated, but faintly audible was Director Zhang’s barely restrained fury: “Ruan Nianning, is this your first day on set? Have you never studied acting? Look at yourself—look at your performance! If you continue with this half-hearted attitude, you might as well go back and focus on being a Young Madam! I want my work to be perfectly presented to the audience, do you understand?”
This wasn’t the first time the renowned director had lost his temper. Director Zhang’s reputation for strictness was well-known in the industry; even acclaimed actors, including Film Empress Song Shiyu, had been on the receiving end of his scolding.
Ruan Nianning remained silent throughout the outburst. After Director Zhang finished, she silently returned to her place, head bowed. It was impossible to tell whether she had humbly accepted the criticism or simply tuned it all out.
“Nianning, what’s wrong? You’ve seemed off these past few days,” Song Shiyu said, looking at her with concern. Just a few days ago, during the Christmas Eve dinner, Ruan Nianning had been in good spirits, and the atmosphere among the four of them had been joyful. How could things have changed so quickly? Now, Ruan Nianning appeared absent-minded and restless, as if her thoughts were wandering. Her lines were wrong, her acting was off, her blocking was incorrect, and even during her scenes with Song Shiyu, where they should have been sharing a deep, emotional gaze, it was obvious to anyone that her mind was elsewhere.
“It’s nothing, Sister Song,” Ruan Nianning said, her heart filled with regret. “I’m holding everyone back. I know my performance these past few days has been unprofessional. I’m sorry…”
By the end of her apology, the rims of her eyes had reddened. She felt terrible. She had longed to act opposite Song Shiyu, but she had ruined it herself and even let her senior see her subpar performance.
“Nianning, is something bothering you?” Song Shiyu asked gently, her tone free of blame.
Ruan Nianning nodded, her self-reproach deepening as tears welled up in her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I know I’m not in the right state, but I can’t help it. I can’t focus, I can’t get into character.”
“Can you tell me what’s wrong?”
Ruan Nianning gritted her teeth and shook her head.
“Nianning, I think you need to take care of this first before you can fully focus on filming,” Song Shiyu said, patting her shoulder. “Why don’t you handle this matter first and then come back to filming with peace of mind? We’ll wait for you.”
“But won’t Director Zhang object?”
“He’ll definitely have objections, but he once had a female lead get injured on set and be hospitalized for three months. He had no choice but to wait those three months,” Song Shiyu said reassuringly. “I’m sure resolving your issue won’t take that long.”
Ruan Nianning was filled with gratitude. “Thank you, Sister Song.”
When Ruan Nianning asked Director Zhang for leave, he was surprised at first, but quickly relented. “Go, go. Take care of things and come back when you’re ready. Otherwise, we can keep your body here, but we can’t keep your heart. If you force yourself to film now, we’ll just end up having to reshoot everything anyway.”
“Thank you, Director Zhang!” Ruan Nianning bowed deeply.
Luo Bufei visited the set and heard that Ruan Nianning was taking a few days off. She excitedly said, “Sister Ning, are you going back to Changbin? If you see President Huo, please tell her I’m working hard on the proposal and ask for a few more days. I’ll definitely deliver the best plan!”
Ruan Nianning replied slowly, “Just finish it when you’re ready and contact her directly.”
Huo Jianan, who was in a meeting, didn’t expect to receive a new message from Ruan Nianning. The surprise brought her both delight and apprehension.
Jianan, I’m on my way back to Changbin. Do you have time today? Let’s meet.
Reading the message, Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. She suddenly had a strange feeling that Ruan Nianning’s return must be for something extremely important—something related to her. Otherwise, why would she specifically request a meeting?
I have time. Where do you want to meet?
[3 PM, Changbin Central Park.]
Huo Jianan didn’t ask any further.
[ Okay, I’ll wait for you. ]
After a quick lunch, Huo Jianan sat quietly in her office.
Through the glass window, she saw her assistant, Min Jiru, leaning over her desk, holding her phone. A wide smile—secretive, sweet, and blissful—spread across her face as she stared at the screen.
Huo Jianan’s lips curved. Her assistant was undoubtedly in love.
The feeling of being in love… it was truly wonderful.
Huo Jianan couldn’t help but reminisce about the days she spent with Ruan Nianning in City D for Christmas. Ruan Nianning would cuddle Niuniu, happily stroking its fur and kissing it. She’d wrap her arms around Huo Jianan’s neck, pressing close for kisses. Even after recovering from a cold, she’d roll around playfully on Huo Jianan’s lap like a puppy.
Huo Jianan’s lips curved into a smile, and she realized she was smiling again. Every time she thought about Nianning, she felt a happy and contented warmth, as if she were falling in love.
Huo Jianan sent a text to Wang Baobao, asking him not to pick her up today because she had important business to attend to and wouldn’t be going to the hospital for rehabilitation.
