- Chapter 42.1 - The Battle Between Heaven and Man
Huo Jianan woke up feeling refreshed and content. She sat up, stretched lazily, and turned to find the space beside her empty. Only a dent in the pillow and a strand of jet-black hair remained as evidence that someone had slept there.
Since the bed was empty, Huo Jianan glanced around and lay back down, pulling Ruan Nianning‘s side of the quilt over herself. She buried her face in it, inhaling deeply, her bottom lifting off the bed.
My wife‘s pheromones smell so good!
Just as Huo Jianan was lost in the scent, Ruan Nianning emerged from the bathroom.
Whoosh! The quilt was suddenly ripped off.
Huo Jianan, still snuffling like a puppy under the covers, froze.
“Wife?!”
“What are you doing?”
Huo Jianan had never been this embarrassed in both this life and her previous one. “I… I saw something on your side of the bed. I was helping you find it so it wouldn’t bother you at night.”
Ruan Nianning, seeing her flushed like a cooked shrimp and spouting such nonsense with a straight face, asked, “Did you find it?”
“F-found it,” Huo Jianan replied, her voice cracking. Under the quilt, everything was perfectly neat and empty.
“My toe,” Huo Jianan blurted out, resorting to a playful ploy. “I’ve moved my leg now, so it won’t poke you anymore.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
She reached out and gave Huo Jianan‘s pert rear a firm squeeze, feeling its softness. “Nice and firm. Now get up.”
Huo Jianan secretly puffed out her chest with pride over her rear. “Wife,” she asked cheerfully, “aren’t you supposed to be at the film set today?”
“I don’t have much to shoot today, so I can go later,” Ruan Nianning replied, opening the wardrobe and pulling out an outfit for Huo Jianan. “We’re having dinner together tonight. I’ve invited Sister Song and her friends.”
“Okay.” Even if they weren’t having dinner alone, they’d still get to spend Christmas Eve together afterward.
Thinking of Christmas Eve, Huo Jianan remembered the gift she’d prepared. She picked up her phone and called Xiaoman. “Xiaoman, bring the gift over. Now.”
After hanging up, Ruan Nianning watched her with amusement. “What’s this all about? So mysterious.”
Huo Jianan grinned enigmatically. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
The door swung open. Xiaoman entered with the gift, placed it on the floor, and tactfully left.
Ruan Nianning‘s gaze fell on the box. Something seemed to be moving inside, and there was a small hole on the side—likely an air vent. Could it be a living creature?
Huo Jianan, still in her pajamas, hastily pulled on a sweater and rolled her wheelchair out of the bedroom. Seeing Ruan Nianning curiously examining the box, she smiled. “Wife, go on and open it.”
Ruan Nianning crouched down, her curiosity piqued, and lifted the lid.
A snow-white creature sat up, its front paws braced against the edge of the box. It gazed at her with bright, black eyes, a faint smile on its face.
Ruan Nianning‘s eyes lit up instantly, her voice filled with delight. “Ah! Is this a Samoyed? What a beautiful puppy!”
“Yes, a Samoyed. Do you like it?”
“I love it! What a cute puppy! Absolutely adorable!” Ruan Nianning scooped the puppy out of the box, cradling it in her arms, and showered its fluffy white head with kisses.
It was clear that Wolfie adored this little dog.
This gift was definitely the right choice, Huo Jianan thought.
“She’s called Niuniu, a little princess,” Huo Jianan explained. “I was going to bring her home so you could name her, but as soon as I got her, everyone doted on her so much that Grandmother named her before I could. If you don’t like the name, feel free to change it.”
“No need. Niuniu is perfect. She’s already used to it.”
Ruan Nianning cradled the puppy in her arms, then lifted her high. “Niuniu, you’re such a beautiful treasure! Have you had breakfast? Mommy will feed you.”
True to her word, Ruan Nianning sat down at the dining table with Niuniu, picking up a piece of bacon and feeding it to her. For a moment, she completely ignored Huo Jianan.
Huo Jianan: “……” Forget it. You can’t compete with a dog, especially one this adorable.
She retreated to her bedroom to change her clothes, washed up, and tidied herself up before finally returning to the dining table. Only then did Ruan Nianning belatedly realize she’d left Huo Jianan alone in the bedroom without helping her get dressed. Her face filled with remorse. “I’m sorry. I was just so overwhelmed with joy.”
Ruan Nianning smiled and fed Niuniu.
“Don’t just spoil Niuniu,” Huo Jianan said. “Make sure you eat too. If you like Niuniu, bring her to the set and let Sister Song see our little girl. There are two cans of puppy food in the second compartment of that box, along with a leash. Take those with you too.”
Ruan Nianning hadn’t expected such thorough preparation. She smiled at Huo Jianan, put Niuniu down to play in the room, and joined her for breakfast.
“How did you know I like puppies?”
“I saw your WeChat post. I couldn’t let my Wolfie be jealous of other people’s dogs.”
Ruan Nianning smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. She tucked a stray hair behind her ear, revealing a delicate, snow-white cheek that had somehow acquired a faint blush.
This pure and adorable Wolfie was a side of Ruan Nianning Huo Jianan had never seen before.
Ruan Nianning‘s eyes lit up. She looked up to see Huo Jianan smiling warmly at her, her deep-set features framed by skin as fair as milk. The smile was bright, warm, and utterly captivating.
“Feed me.”
Huo Jianan‘s hand trembled as she held the jar, her face flushing crimson.
“Are you going to feed me or not?” Ruan Nianning pouted playfully.
“Of course I will.” For the first time in her life, Huo Jianan was feeding someone. She carefully spread the jam evenly on the toast and brought it to her wife‘s lips.
Ruan Nianning bit into the toast, her tongue “accidentally” brushing against Huo Jianan‘s fingertips. Huo Jianan‘s heart raced, pounding so hard it felt like it would burst from her chest. Her face burned like a ripe tomato, and she glanced nervously around, too afraid to meet Ruan Nianning‘s gaze.
Ruan Nianning secretly smiled at Huo Jianan‘s innocent, bashful demeanor. She found Huo Jianan herself to be far sweeter and more delightful than the jam-covered toast.
A silver minivan pulled into the hotel parking lot. Ruan Nianning wore a hat and mask, the brim pulled low to reveal only her lovely phoenix eyes, as she cradled Niuniu in her arms. Xiao Zhu carried her bags, one of which held Niuniu‘s dog food.
Huo Jianan shook her head. “No need. I don’t want to disturb your filming.”
She smoothed out the corner of Ruan Nianning‘s shirt that had been caught by the dog leash, smiling warmly at her wife. Her gentle lips overflowed with sincere admiration. “My wife is truly beautiful! You’re every bit the superstar you’re supposed to be!”
“You’re just sweet-talking me again!” Ruan Nianning laughed, her eyes sparkling. Beneath her mask, her pert nose wrinkled slightly, and her elegant, upward-slanting phoenix eyes danced with a classical beauty.
Huo Jianan recalled her wife‘s historical costume portrayal: skin as smooth as cream, red lips and white teeth, a beauty that could topple kingdoms. Those phoenix eyes and that graceful, spirited demeanor marked her as a natural-born beauty of ancient times.
“I’m not just flattering you,” Huo Jianan replied. “You really are stunning. Now I understand why the ancients would spend fortunes for just a smile from a beauty.”
Xiao Zhu, standing nearby, didn’t dare look at the couple. Miss Huo had truly transformed—her temper had improved, and she’d even become cultured, spouting romantic lines so effortlessly.
Alone in her room, Huo Jianan practiced leaning against the table. Without anyone to assist her, she moved with painstaking care, each session leaving her exhausted. After nearly a month of training, she felt her legs were no longer quite so clumsy, and a faint strength seemed to be building in her muscles.
She had to persevere! No matter how painful it was! She had to stand up. She wanted to stand beside Ruan Nianning someday, to finally be able to look her in the eye.
This type of training was incredibly exhausting, especially since she had no one nearby to help her. Huo Jianan didn’t call Xiaoman for assistance. Gritting her teeth, she shuffled forward, step by step, like a toddler learning to walk, painfully moving her clumsy, stiff legs.
After the training session, drenched in sweat, she collapsed into her wheelchair, gasping for breath. Her damp hair clung to her sweat-soaked forehead, and her pale skin, now glistening, seemed even fairer, as if it had been dipped in water. Her slightly labored breathing made her look like a delicate beauty utterly exhausted. After resting, Huo Jianan called Xiaoman upstairs to help her bathe.
It wasn’t that she wanted company, but she worried that if Ruan Nianning returned and discovered she had bathed, she would naturally ask questions. If she learned Jianan had bathed alone, Nianning would likely fly into a rage, scolding Xiaoman first and then herself.
During a video call, when Ruan Nianning had scolded her, Huo Jianan had cowered like a trembling puppy in a corner, too afraid to retort. How could she possibly face her in person?
There was no help for it. After all, Wolfie was a wolf through and through. So Huo Jianan obediently asked Xiaoman to accompany her to the bathroom.
Ruan Nianning‘s role in the filming today was minimal. She didn’t leave the hotel until nearly 10 a.m. and returned by 6 p.m.
Huo Jianan was surprised. “Wife, you’re back so early?”
“It’s Christmas Eve today, so Director Zhang wrapped up early. I bet several actors asked for time off to leave early. He figured he might as well call it a day.”
“Your director sure knows how to go with the flow.”
“What choice did he have? Most of the main cast had already left. Tonight is Christmas Eve, after all.”
Ruan Nianning was in a great mood, cuddling and cooing over Niuniu. “Sister Song loves Niuniu too. Who can resist our little beauty? Everyone falls for her charm. Don’t you agree, Niuniu?”
Huo Jianan watched with a hint of jealousy, her heart stirring with longing. What should I do? She wished she could become a dog too, to be cradled in her wife‘s arms and kissed.
“Jianan, let’s tidy up and go out for dinner. We’re meeting Sister Song and the others at the restaurant.”
Niuniu was temporarily left in Xiaoman‘s care. Before leaving, Ruan Nianning scrutinized Huo Jianan from head to toe, her gaze slightly cautious.
“What is it? Is there something on my face?”
Ruan Nianning shook her head. She went to the dressing table, picked up a comb, and smoothed Huo Jianan‘s hair. After blow-drying it, she studied her carefully, as if appreciating a work of art.
Huo Jianan: “……”
As expected of a celebrity wife—she’s so meticulous.
“How do you like it, President Huo? Satisfied with this hairstyle?”
Huo Jianan looked at herself in the mirror. Her shoulder-length hair hung smoothly, with a flattering part and a slight lift at the forehead, adding a touch of refined confidence to her gentle elegance.
Huo Jianan smiled in surprise. “It looks great—much better than I could manage myself. I love it!”
“I love it too!” Ruan Nianning leaned against Huo Jianan‘s shoulder, admiring her reflection in the mirror, her lips curving playfully. It was clear that Wolfie had been in a good mood these past few days. The bold-featured beauty’s bright smile lit up her face, her deep brown eyes sparkling like fire, effortlessly captivating hearts.
A Wife-S Grade Omega‘s beauty and charm were truly unmatched.
Huo Jianan suppressed her pounding heart, smiling down at her reflection.
To have such a dazzling, star-like person as my wife… it’s truly wonderful.
In the restaurant, Film Empress Song Shiyu had already arrived, accompanied by a young girl.
Ruan Nianning wheeled Huo Jianan into the private room. “Sorry we’re late, Sister Song.”
Song Shiyu wore a white dress, her jet-black hair cascading softly over her shoulders. Her skin glowed like snow, her demeanor cool and refined. The girl beside her, roughly Huo Jianan‘s age, had fair skin with a healthy, youthful flush—a rare beauty, especially striking for her bright, luminous eyes.
Ruan Nianning made the introductions: “Jianan, you know Sister Song. This is Miss Luo, Sister Song‘s… young charge.”
When Ruan Nianning mentioned “young charge,” the girl named Luo flushed, glancing at Song Shiyu beside her. Her bright black eyes held an unreadable emotion.
Song Shiyu smiled gently, her voice soft: “Xiao Fei, this is your Sister Ning‘s wife, a young miss from the Changbin Huo Family.”
Changbin was one of the nation’s premier metropolises, its prosperity and advanced development earning it international renown. Virtually everyone knew of Changbin, and few were unaware of the Huo Corporation.
“Miss Huo, hello.” The young girl didn’t shower the influential figure with obsequious flattery, but after a moment of surprise, her usual calm and innocence returned.
The girl flushed crimson. “I’m not a ‘Miss’ like you, Miss Huo. You come from a noble family, with status and influence. I’m just Luo Bufei. You can call me Xiao Luo or Xiao Fei.”
Huo Jianan was slightly surprised. So this was Luo Bufei, the true female lead from the original novel. In that fleeting moment, she also understood her relationship with Song Shiyu and the Film Empress.
Ruan Nianning laughed heartily. “Sister Song, your little friend is quite well-behaved.”
Song Shiyu smiled, turned to look at Luo Bufei, and reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. What could have been an intimate gesture seemed routine from Song Shiyu, as if she often cared for her young companion in this way.
“Sister Ning and Miss Huo aren’t strangers, Xiao Fei. Don’t be afraid.”
Luo Bufei gave a soft murmur of acknowledgment and nodded.
Ruan Nianning observed this with mild surprise, while Huo Jianan smiled knowingly, understanding everything.
Delicious dishes were served one after another, and Ruan Nianning ordered several bottles of wine.
