- Chapter 41.1 - She Admits She's Developed Feelings for Wolfie
Early the next morning, Meng Xienen descended the stairs for breakfast as usual. As she entered the dining hall, a white ball of fluff darted past her feet, narrowly avoiding being stepped on.
“What’s this?”
“Good morning, Miss Meng,” Housekeeper He replied. “This is the puppy Young Miss brought home last night. She returned at 11 PM, carrying this little one and looking quite delighted.”
The puppy was the result of Huo Jianan and Wang Baobao visiting five pet stores, scouring nearly half of Changbin, before finally settling on their carefully selected choice after much deliberation.
A beautiful Samoyed.
Well, not exactly a choice. The little pup had taken the initiative to latch onto Jianan’s leg and try to climb up it.
Huo Jianan cradled the puppy, stroking its snow-white fur. “Little beauty, since you threw yourself into my arms and are so adorable, you’re the one.”
Meng Xienen chuckled. “Instead of bringing men home at night, she brings home a dog.”
“That’s what’s great about your sister,” Grandmother Huo said, bending down and calling, “Niuniu!” The puppy scurried to her feet and nestled against Grandmother Huo’s leg.
Grandmother Huo scooped up Niuniu and placed her on her lap. “Niuniu, what do you want to eat? Grandmother will pick it up for you.”
When Huo Jianan came downstairs, she was greeted by this heartwarming scene of a loving grandmother and her adored pet. She had been worried about not telling her grandmother and Sister Meng about getting a dog, fearing they wouldn’t like it and would resist, especially her grandmother.
She never expected her grandmother to be so delighted, with both the elder and Sister Meng feeding the puppy toast and slices of braised beef.
Wait a minute! That’s the braised beef I wanted to eat!
In the end, after Huo Jianan insisted, Niuniu was unceremoniously chased off the table. Grandmother Huo patted the puppy with regret, “Go down for now.” Housekeeper He found a stainless steel bowl, which would henceforth be Niuniu’s dedicated food bowl.
Huo Jianan thought to herself, Niuniu has single-handedly wormed her way into this wealthy family. From now on, she’ll never want for food or drink.
The family gathered for breakfast, a diverse spread blending Eastern and Western cuisines.
Morning, the start of the day, is when people are generally at their most energetic. After a nourishing breakfast, their vitality only increases, making it the perfect time for important planning and discussions.
Grandmother Huo laid down her chopsticks, picked up her napkin, and elegantly wiped the corners of her mouth before sitting up straight—a gesture indicating she had finished eating. Housekeeper Zhou, following her usual routine, brought her a cup of tonic tea.
Grandmother Huo took a leisurely sip and casually asked, “Nannan, have you made a decision about the acquisition?”
Huo Jianan, who had been chatting casually with Meng Xien, grew more serious at the mention of business, her tone turning solemn. “Grandmother, this acquisition involves 40 billion yuan. I believe we should approach it with caution. If we’re spending that much to buy a company, it needs to bring substantial profits to Huo Corporation. Otherwise, it would be a failed acquisition.”
“And what do you propose?”
“My idea is to invest in the direction that will be most profitable in the future,” Huo Jianan replied.
“Soul Corporation is currently the most profitable company,” Meng Xien interjected. “The gaming industry is also a key focus for major international corporations.”
This point was indisputable. Every top-tier tech company and influential business tycoon worldwide coveted a share of the gaming industry’s profits.
“Sister Meng is right,” Huo Jianan continued. “That’s why I’d like to fly to Country F before Christmas to see Soul Corporation firsthand.”
Grandmother Huo: “You want to personally investigate the matter?”
“Yes, I believe it’s necessary.”
Grandmother Huo listened silently, her expression subtly displeased. She didn’t want this matter to create a rift between her two granddaughters.
Huo Jianan continued, “I’ve thoroughly reviewed the financial reports and acquisition plan. Sister Meng previously conducted her own investigation, and with her seal of approval, I believe Soul itself is sound. This trip, however, I want to meet Samuel, the legendary genius behind Soul Corporation.” Samuel was one of the founders of Soul and currently served as its CEO.
Grandmother Huo: “You’ve meticulously reviewed all these reports?” Xu Weiyi, who had led the Huo Corporation for years, spoke with the dignified authority of a seasoned leader. Her voice, though cold and solemn, couldn’t entirely mask a hint of surprise.
“Yes, Grandmother. It was quite overwhelming, but with the help of President Yuan, President Zhao, and Lawyer Han, I managed to grasp the essentials.”
Ever since being appointed as the lead on the acquisition project, Huo Jianan had been devouring knowledge like a parched land suddenly drenched by a torrential rain. She absorbed information voraciously, as if her very life depended on it.
Remarkably, Huo Jianan possessed a unique talent for learning. This gift allowed her to progress rapidly in whatever she undertook.
Grandmother Huo nodded. “Christmas is coming up soon. When are you planning to go?”
“The day after tomorrow. I’ve arranged it with Sister Meng to make it before Christmas. They’re about to celebrate their New Year, and I don’t want to disturb their festivities.”
Meng Xien smiled. “That’s right, Aunt Xu. Jianan and I have already discussed it—we’re going to Soul for further investigation together.”
“So you two have been plotting together to gang up on this old lady?”
“Not at all! Sister Meng and I just want to finalize everything before reporting back to you, Chairwoman Xu.”
Grandmother Huo’s initial worries dissipated, only to be replaced by another concern. A flight to Country F would take over ten hours.
She looked at Huo Jianan with concern. “Nannan, are you really sure about this?”
“Absolutely!” Huo Jianan replied casually. “I love flying—I get to drink all sorts of drinks.”
Grandmother Huo and Meng Xien exchanged a glance, their eyes betraying surprise at something they had just heard.
Huo Jianan, head lowered, was enjoying her congee with the accompanying delicacies, completely oblivious to their astonished expressions.
Grandmother Huo’s voice carried a note of uncertainty. “Are you sure it’s wise to spend over ten hours on a plane?”
“Absolutely! Last time I went to City D for a film shoot, I flew with Wang Baobao. The view of the clouds stretching endlessly below us was breathtaking!”
Grandmother Huo stared intently at Huo Jianan for three seconds before nodding silently, her gaze carrying a hint of approval. “Nannan, you’ve truly made progress.”
Unaware that her casual mention of flying had sent shockwaves through Xu Weiyi and Meng Xien’s minds, Huo Jianan smiled. “Of course! With you and Sister Meng being so accomplished, I have to improve a little every day just to keep up with you two powerful women.”
Meng Xien chuckled. “Jianan, you’re getting quite skilled at sweet talk. Are you using the same tactics you use on Nianning on us now?”
“What? I’m completely serious!”
Grandmother Huo glanced at Huo Jianan, then at Meng Xien. One was her own granddaughter, who had grown up wild and reckless but seemed completely transformed after marriage, like a new person. The other was the daughter of her closest friend, someone she had known for ten years and personally nurtured. She could have easily considered her another granddaughter.
Now, the two young women sat with her for dinner, their youthful faces brimming with vitality, equally outstanding and confident. Xu Weiyi’s heart churned with mixed emotions. “You two… go safely and come back safely. Stay safe at all times.”
This was Huo Jianan’s first business trip. That evening, she and Xiaoman were packing her luggage. Grandmother Huo, worried, had insisted Xiaoman accompany her to take care of her needs abroad. Xiaoman glanced up at Huo Jianan, waiting for her signal.
“Xiaoman, we’re almost done packing. Just put the suitcase away and you can leave.”
Xiaoman put the suitcase away and hurried out. Grandmother Huo’s imposing presence intimidated everyone except Housekeeper He. In the past, Xiaoman and Xiao Tao had also feared the Young Miss, though they had always adored Miss Meng. But now, Xiaoman found the married Young Miss to be wonderful—gentle in speech and magnanimous in spirit. She no longer needed to walk on eggshells, constantly worried about saying the wrong thing in front of her.
“Grandmother,” Huo Jianan said, “I’ll only be staying in Country F for one night. I can take care of myself.”
Xu Weiyi replied, “Absolutely not. Going out alone is one thing, but traveling abroad? This isn’t like visiting a film set where at least your wife could look after you.”
Aunt Xu, don’t worry,” Meng Xien interjected. “I’ll go with Jianan. We’re booking a suite, and I’ll take care of her.”
After much persuasion, Xu Weiyi finally relented.
The private jet roared into the sky, piercing through the clouds. Huo Jianan, who was on the private jet, was like Liu Laona entering the Grand View Garden—everything seemed novel and fascinating, yet she dared not show even a hint of her amazement in front of the crew. The flight attendants, however, provided attentive and meticulous service to this esteemed young miss of the Huo Family.
Meng Xien, traveling in first-class on an international flight, arrived at the private jet’s apron ahead of time to wait for Huo Jianan.
As the plane touched down, Meng Xien hurried over and took the wheelchair from the attendant. “Jianan, how are you feeling? Is there anywhere you feel unwell?”
She remembered clearly that Aunt Xu had said Huo Jianan developed a fear of heights and flying, especially flying alone, after a paragliding accident. That’s why both she and Aunt Xu were so surprised to hear that Huo Jianan was going to fly.
“It was great! The flight went smoothly. I drank six or seven different drinks, watched two movies, and then slept.”
“You flew alone? Weren’t you scared?”
“How was I alone? There were the crew members.” Huo Jianan’s smile was radiant, showing no trace of the anxiety or panic one might expect from a first-time long-haul flier.
“Sister Meng, how was your flight? Did you meet any beauties?”
Meng Xien chuckled. “No, I’m not that lucky. How could I expect to meet a beauty on a flight? Even if I did, she wouldn’t be interested in me.”
As she spoke, a figure appeared in her mind: someone leaning against a tall tree, their arms as pale as snow. Their doll-like face, delicate and charming, gazed directly at her with eyes sparkling with light and laughter. Their healthy pink lips curved shyly, then grew even more vivid and alluring. Xien, I love you.
Meng Xien took a subtle breath, suppressing the image of that person, that smile, and those eyes.
After picking up Huo Jianan, the two women first checked into the hotel, freshened up, and then formally visited Soul Corporation.
It was almost Christmas, and Soul Corporation was immersed in the festive atmosphere, everyone eagerly anticipating the holiday. Samuel was surprised to hear that the Huo Corporation was coming for another inspection, wondering why they were returning. He learned that this time, the Huo Family’s Young Miss—the key decision-maker for the potential acquisition—was personally visiting. Samuel felt both nervous and excited.
Soul Corporation was small, with only around a hundred employees spread across two floors. Huo Jianan didn’t let Sister Meng push her wheelchair; she maneuvered it herself with remarkable agility, moving forward, backward, and turning corners with ease.
After a brief tour, they quickly entered a conference room for the formal meeting. Present alongside Samuel were three other senior executives from Soul Corporation. Huo Jianan was accompanied by Lawyer Han and a translator.
After reviewing the company’s performance over the past three years and the successful market performance of Glory Mission, Huo Jianan asked only one question: “If the acquisition were to proceed—and I emphasize ‘if’—how, Mr. Samuel, would you develop Soul over the next two to three years to achieve even more remarkable success?”
Samuel wasn’t surprised. With a confident smile, he began to speak, the interpreter diligently providing simultaneous translation: “First, we’re preparing to launch a new game…”
The meeting lasted two and a half hours and concluded with applause. Samuel invited Huo Jianan to dinner, but she politely declined. “No, thank you. I need to get an early start tomorrow for my flight. A beautiful woman is waiting for me to celebrate Christmas together.”
After dinner, back in her room, Huo Jianan stretched lazily. “Finally, it’s over.”
Meng Xien sat on the sofa, her legs elegantly crossed. “So? You’ve met Samuel. Have you made a decision?”
“Yes, I have.”
Meng Xien’s heart skipped a beat as she asked, “So, are you going to acquire the company or not?” Her hand, which had been casually resting on her leg, now clenched into a fist, her fingers twisting nervously.
Compared to Meng Xien’s tension, Huo Jianan appeared relaxed. With a mischievous grin, she grabbed a small apple from the fruit bowl and tossed it to Meng Xien.
Meng Xien nervously caught the apple.
“Don’t worry about it now. I’ll tell you after I finish checking out the set at Nianning’s place.”
Meng Xien sighed, somewhat helplessly. “Alright, you’re in charge. I’ll do as you say.”
