- Chapter 4 - Wife, Do You Really Love Me?
Ruan Nianning’s calm gaze suddenly trembled, a violent storm brewing beneath her eyes. Huo Jianan clearly saw the hesitation and doubt in her eyes.
Due to space constraints in the original book’s epilogue, the full extent of the feud between Ruan Nianning and the Huo family wasn’t explicitly detailed. It was only mentioned that Huo Jianan’s mother had caused Ruan Nianning’s mother’s death.
After marrying into the Huo family, Ruan Nianning endured the disgust and intense hatred she felt every time she was intimate with Huo Jianan, all to make her fall in love and trust her. She remained a lone wolf in hiding, charming others in public while stabbing them in the back in private.
Her close friend, the actress, even advised her not to let hatred blind her, warning against sinking into the mire of vengeance and losing her rationality. But Ruan Nianning refused to listen, stubbornly pursuing her path. She encouraged Huo Jianan to take over the Huo Corporation, making a series of absurd and childish decisions that defied Grandmother Huo, lost the support of everyone around her, and ultimately drove the old woman to her death. In the end, she cruelly revealed everything to Huo Jianan, declaring that she had never loved this useless girl, that it had all been a scheme to use her for revenge!
After learning the truth, Huo Jianan finally jumped from Changbin Bridge, ending her life in the river.
Even her best friend, who had read the book together with her, said, “Have you read it yet? Don’t read it if you haven’t—heart attack warning! It’s so brutal! How did our beautiful, fierce, brilliant Sister Ning turn into a madwoman? I hate Huo Jianan, but it’s just a leg injury! Is it really worth losing her mind over? She’s a wealthy young miss! She was born with privileges we can’t even imagine! Even though her temper is unbearable, she genuinely loved Sister Ning. In the end, she ended up ruined and alone. Ah… it’s really tragic. Sister Ning’s heart must have turned to ashes before she jumped. This isn’t right—I need to demand the author write an epilogue!”
In the hospital room, sunlight filtered through the drawn curtains, and a dim, pale light illuminated the bedside lamp. The two women locked eyes, each lost in their own thoughts.
Ruan Nianning was the first to break the silence. “Jianan, what’s wrong? Why would I lie to you? Don’t overthink it. The doctor said you have a head injury and need rest.”
Huo Jianan stared at her. “Wife, do you really love me?”
Ruan Nianning, while tucking the blanket around Huo Jianan, skillfully avoided her gaze. “Yes, of course.”
Huo Jianan scoffed inwardly. She just promised not to lie to me, and now she’s lying.
Footsteps approached from outside, followed by a cheerful voice. “Aunt Xu, don’t worry. The doctor said Jianan’s surgery went perfectly. She might even be awake by now.”
******
The door opened, and Grandmother Huo entered, supported by a young woman.
The woman wore a well-tailored, high-quality suit, appeared to be around 27 or 28 years old, and exuded confidence and composure. Her long black hair cascaded down her back, her skin was fair and luminous, her makeup impeccable, and her smile gracious. She spoke to Grandmother Huo with a warm, familiar tone.
Huo Jianan wondered, Who is this person?
“Madam is here. Miss Meng has arrived.” Sister Wang and Sister Mei at the door rose respectfully.
“Is the Young Miss awake?” Grandmother Huo asked.
“She is. The Young Madam is inside attending to her.”
Hearing the voices, Ruan Nianning went to open the door. “Grandmother, Sister Meng.”
“How is Nan Nan?”
“She’s awake now. Her headache is gone, and she even went to the bathroom just now.”
Grandmother Huo hummed noncommittally, her gaze fixed on her granddaughter.
“Grandmother,” Huo Jianan called out, propping herself up on her elbows. Ruan Nianning moved to help her sit up, but someone was faster.
Miss Meng had already wrapped an arm around Jianan’s back, helping her sit upright and propping two pillows behind her. “Jianan, you look much better. It seems you’re recovering well. How do you feel now?”
Huo Jianan smiled politely. “I’m feeling quite well, thank you. No discomfort at all.”
“Oh, you! How did you manage to crack your head open just before your wedding? Did you finally marry the person you’ve been dreaming of? Were you just too overwhelmed with happiness?”
Miss Meng stroked Huo Jianan’s head with the protective tenderness of an older sister. Her touch was gentle, mindful of the bandages wrapped around Jianan’s head.
Huo Jianan, never having experienced such a gesture before, felt a wave of bashfulness. She tilted her head and tried to hide under the blankets.
Miss Meng teased, “You’re already married, yet still so shy?”
Grandmother Huo chided, “You don’t even know to greet your visitor, Sister Meng.”
Huo Jianan obediently corrected herself, “Sister Meng.”
Grandmother Huo offered a few more concerned inquiries. “Stay in the hospital and rest properly these next few days. Nianning, you stay here and take care of her.”
Ruan Nianning replied, “Yes, Grandmother. I’ll take good care of Jianan.”
Grandmother Huo said coldly, “I hope you mean it. The doctor said Jianan’s head injury was from a fall. I don’t want this to happen again.”
Ruan Nianning pursed her lips, her expression still deferential. “It was my fault for not watching Jianan closely enough. I promise this won’t happen again.”
Grandmother Huo glanced at her. “Good. I see you understand.”
Miss Meng approached with a smile. “Aunt Xu, you’re being so harsh with the new daughter-in-law. Jianan will be heartbroken if she sees this.”
Grandmother Huo couldn’t help but retort, “How am I being harsh? I’m just telling her that now that she’s part of the Huo family, she needs to focus on caring for Jianan.”
“Aunt Xu, I know you mean well and have always doted on Jianan. But she’s married now, with her own aspirations and plans. I trust Nianning will take good care of her. Look how well-suited they are! Before you know it, Aunt Xu, you’ll be holding your great-grandchildren.”
Grandmother Huo sighed, “I’m already 75. I’m afraid I won’t live to see that day.”
“Aunt Xu, what are you saying? You must live to a ripe old age. The Huo family’s vast estate still depends on you.”
Grandmother Huo sighed slowly. “Xien, let’s go back.”
“Alright, Aunt Xu.” Sister Meng turned to Huo Jianan and made a playful face before leaving with Grandmother Huo.
Xien! Meng Xien!
Huo Jianan stood frozen, stunned. This was her first encounter with Sister Meng, who clearly exuded the aura of a professional powerhouse—sharp, capable, and efficient. Just moments ago, she had been so warmly affectionate, even advocating on behalf of Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning. Jianan had grown quite fond of her.
If only she weren’t Meng Xien.
“Meng Xien, Meng Xien…”
Wasn’t she the adopted daughter of the Huo family, the mastermind behind the scheme to collude with Ruan Nianning to plunder the Huo family’s wealth and ruin Huo Jianan?
When reading the novel, Huo Jianan had imagined Meng Xien as a silent, stern woman with a gloomy demeanor and eyes like venomous snakes. She never expected her to be so warm, considerate, and tactful.
Huo Jianan heard Ruan Nianning repeatedly murmuring Meng Xien’s name, finding it rather odd. “What’s wrong, Jianan? Are you looking for Sister Meng?”
Huo Jianan recalled the comments from readers of the original novel. Some fans actually supported a pairing between Meng Xien and Ruan Nianning, and many others had upvoted those comments.
Her friend had been furious, cursing, “Can’t Sister Ning be the sole beauty? Even if she doesn’t love Huo Jianan, why must she be paired with that villainous scum?! This is ridiculous! Do I not have breasts too? Unacceptable! I’m going to message the author and demand an official pairing!”
Huo Jianan’s lips curled slightly as she looked at Ruan Nianning, her smile faint and ambiguous. “What do you think of Sister Meng? Isn’t she quite nice?”
Ruan Yuning nodded. “Yes, she’s very nice—witty and well-mannered. She’s just like the older sister you always wanted.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
For a moment, it felt like a lush green pasture had sprouted atop her head.
If Ruan Nianning divorced her, she wouldn’t care who her ex-wife loved or liked. That would be Ruan Nianning’s freedom.
But since they weren’t divorced, and Ruan Nianning was still her wife, Huo Jianan couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
She could be disabled, but she refused to be a cuckold.
