- Chapter 38.1 - This Night Will Take a Long Time
A few days later, Wang Baobao’s house was bustling with activity. Outside, a skilled chef delivered platters of exquisitely grilled seafood and dishes into the gaming room.
Inside the gaming room, a long table groaned under the weight of gourmet dishes and an impressive array of alcoholic beverages.
Zhenzhen and Softie sprawled on the sofa, each with a beautiful woman in their arms, drinking and chatting.
Huito, her arm around her girlfriend, asked with a smile, “Baobao, what made you decide to host this party?”
Wang Baobao replied, “It’s almost Christmas, and we rarely get to meet such a skilled and handsome guy. We just had to get together!”
The skilled and handsome guy in question was currently engrossed in a game on his computer, a beautiful woman perched on his lap. She cooed, “Oh, handsome, you’re so amazing! Taking down so many people all by yourself!”
This handsome guy was none other than Zhenzhen’s cousin, Peter.
When Peter finally stood up, still holding the woman, Wang Baobao hurried over. “Peter, sit down and help yourself to the drinks. I’m a close friend of your sister—our relationship is top-notch!”
Zhenzhen shifted to the side. “Peter, these are my good friends from Changbin, our own people. We’re all gamers!”
She gave a thumbs-up.
Freshly cooked dishes and over a dozen mixed drinks were brought out from the garden.
No one knew how much they drank. Peter, with beauties on either arm, downed glass after glass, laughing heartily as they recounted their gaming victories.
Wang Baobao refilled his glass. “Peter, your sister told me you work at Soul Corporation making games! You’re amazing! We only know how to play games, but you actually create them! That’s Soul—the company behind Glory Mission!”
Peter grinned proudly. “I joined Soul because I love playing games. Let me tell you, I even worked on the development team for Glory Mission back in the day.”
The crowd cheered. “Wow! Impressive! That’s true badassery!”
Huito’s eyes lit up. “What games are you planning next? Drop another bombshell! I can’t wait!”
Peter was beaming with pride. “We have plans to release something next year, but I can’t reveal any details—it’s confidential. Our boss isn’t just the boss; he’s the most brilliant engineer at Soul Corporation! He’s my idol! He’s been in high spirits lately, saying something monumental is coming soon. Good times are ahead! He’s already set his sights on a $150 million mansion with a golf course—living the dream!”
Softie squealed. “It’s almost the new year! Are you releasing a new game soon? Oh my goodness! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!”
Zhenzhen remarked, “Your boss must be raking in the cash! He’s about to become a super-wealthy tycoon!”
Peter explained, “We used to be just a small startup, only about a dozen people. Our early games didn’t do so well in the market. But then Glory Mission sold far beyond our wildest expectations. We were all thrilled—it was such a pleasant surprise!”
Wang Baobao raised his glass. “Cheers to Glory Mission!”
Softie toasted, “Cheers to Soul Corporation’s creations!”
Everyone raised their glasses and toasted.
The next day, Wang Baobao recounted every detail of the previous night’s drinking and conversation to Huo Jianan.
“You didn’t miss anything, did you?”
“No!” Wang Baobao pounded his chest. “I told you everything word for word! We had a blast last night—only talked about Soul for a little bit before we went gaming. I wouldn’t forget what you asked me to find out.”
Seeing Huo Jianan lower her head, deep in thought and looking somewhat displeased, Wang Baobao cautiously asked, “Dada, did I do something wrong? Did I not get any useful information?”
Huo Jianan looked up and saw the guilt on his face, which made her smile. “It’s fine. At least we now understand Soul a little better, right?”
Wang Baobao’s mood lifted at her words.
Huo Jianan studied him intently. “Baobao, you’ve lost weight. Your face looks thinner.”
“Really? I’m actually losing weight?” Wang Baobao beamed. “I’ve been following Mr. Zhu’s advice strictly these past few days—no overeating. I’ve been going to the gym every day and running ten kilometers at home every night.”
“You’re really going all out, aren’t you?”
“Absolutely! I’m determined to lose weight! Last night, after climbing all those stairs, I resisted the urge to overeat and only had a portion of vegetable salad and a shrimp.”
Huo Jianan: “How big was the shrimp? Was it a whole Australian lobster? That counts as one whole shrimp!”
“Are you trying to upset me?” Wang Baobao retorted indignantly. “It was only about the size of a palm. I didn’t overindulge.” He continued, “Did you know? Someone at the hospital is actually pursuing Doctor Jiang. A new guy, three years younger than her, keeps showing up every day to see her and even rides the subway home with her after work. We finally got rid of that scumbag, and now we have a younger man vying for her attention. How infuriating!”
“How do you know all this so well?”
“That young nurse at the station. I treat her to good food every day and chat with her. She tells me all the gossip.”
Huo Jianan shook her head. “Maybe they just happen to live near each other. But you… you should make a move. If you like Doctor Jiang, go for it. Ask her out.”
“But I haven’t lost weight yet,” Wang Baobao said dejectedly. “I want to be tall and slim.”
When they arrived at the hospital, a tall, thin male doctor emerged from Doctor Jiang’s office. “Doctor Jiang, so we’re confirmed for this weekend—Saturday. We’ll go together.”
“Alright,” Doctor Jiang replied. “I’ll drive you.”
The male doctor’s face lit up. “I’ll call you at 7 AM on Saturday.”
“Perfect.”
Wang Baobao paced anxiously. “Listen! They’ve actually made plans!”
Huo Jianan, seated in her wheelchair, exuded an unruffled calmness, her demeanor reminiscent of Grandmother Huo, Xu Weiyi. “No need to panic. Let’s get all the facts first.”
Inside the office, Doctor Jiang stood up. “Miss Huo, Miss Wang, you’re here.”
Huo Jianan nodded amicably, her smile gentle and her tone casual. “Doctor Jiang, do you have plans this Saturday? Are you going on vacation?”
“No, not a vacation. That’s Doctor Sha, our new colleague. We’re volunteering at Zhangquan Mountain on Saturday—basically hiking and picking up trash.”
“Doctor Jiang is passionate about volunteering. It’s a worthy cause. Baobao, aren’t you looking for ways to stay active? Hiking and doing something meaningful with Doctor Jiang is much better than spending all day on the couch playing games, right?”
Wang Baobao, suddenly called upon, stammered, “…Ah, oh, yes, yes.”
“Doctor Jiang, when Baobao went for his physical last time, the doctor recommended he lose weight. Could you mentor him?” Huo Jianan felt like she was Wang Baobao’s mother, fretting endlessly over finding him a suitable wife.
Doctor Jiang readily agreed. “Of course! We’re always glad to have more volunteers join our cause.”
While Doctor Jiang turned to retrieve something from the cabinet, Wang Baobao leaned over and whispered in Huo Jianan’s ear, “I want to join them for the hike this Saturday. Could you ask if it’s okay?”
“Why don’t you ask yourself?”
“I’m too scared. Just ask for me, please!”
“You wuss.”
Doctor Jiang glanced over with a smile at their whispered conversation. “What secret are you sharing?”
“It’s no secret! We’re just drinking buddies—what secrets could we possibly have?” Huo Jianan replied with a grin. “Baobao wants to lose weight and is looking for a pretty girl to jog with him at night, but he’s too shy to ask.”
Wang Baobao’s eyes widened in shock as Huo Jianan spouted nonsense. He wanted to strangle her.
“Doctor Jiang, do you run? Would you like to be Wang Baobao’s running partner? My legs aren’t up to it, or she’d never let me off the hook.”
Doctor Jiang smiled. “Running is fine, but I don’t know where Miss Wang lives. Would it be on your way?”
Huo Jianan’s eyes darted about before she answered without hesitation, “It’s on your way. It’s quite a coincidence—she lives near your neighborhood, not far at all.”
“This!” Wang Baobao’s mouth hung open in shock at the blatant lie. When Doctor Jiang glanced over, he quickly closed his mouth and lowered his head.
Doctor Jiang’s lips curved into a smile as she looked at Huo Jianan. “I remember Miss Wang mentioning she lives on Xinghe Road.”
Wang Baobao’s hands nervously rubbed his pant legs, his anxiety mounting.
“It’s like this: her apartment is being renovated. A few days ago, the unit above flooded hers, so she has to stay temporarily elsewhere,” Huo Jianan said, her face unblinking as she spun the tale.
Doctor Jiang smiled faintly and glanced at Wang Baobao. “Alright then, let’s start our evening runs next week.”
Wang Baobao was so delighted he nearly flew into the air. “Ah! Yes! Yes!”
Before rehabilitation training began, Wang Baobao excused himself to use the restroom and pushed Huo Jianan aside. “Dada, but her place isn’t on my way home. What should I do? Drive over every day?”
Huo Jianan rolled her eyes. “Are you a pig? Don’t you know you could rent a place near her residence?”
Wang Baobao’s eyes lit up. “Oh right! How come I didn’t think of that?”
“You can run together, chat, and even walk her home. Doesn’t that give you more chances than that male doctor?”
“Right! Right! Dada, you’re so clever! So sly! Now I understand how you won over Sister-in-law! You’re a hidden gem! You’ve got the potential to be a real playboy!”
“I really appreciate you praising me like that!” Huo Jianan shook her head. “Doctor Jiang didn’t reject you. She didn’t even deny my lie about you living near her. That’s a good sign. Just keep up the good work.”
“How do you know it’s a good sign? Did she tell you that?”
“She didn’t expose my lie about your supposed residence near her. Doesn’t that prove she’s interested?”
“How did she know it was a lie?”
Huo Jianan rested her forehead in her hand. It seemed that aside from his drinking and mischief, Wang Baobao truly lacked certain… qualities.
“Baobao, there’s something I need to make clear to you first.”
Wang Baobao, in an exceptionally good mood, replied, “Go on.”
“Doctor Jiang is a wonderful girl. You must not treat her the way you did that scumbag before. If you can’t be sincere and devoted, don’t even bother chasing after her.”
“What are you implying? I’m nothing like that scumbag!” Wang Baobao retorted defensively. “Of course I’m sincere and devoted in my feelings for Doctor Jiang! I fell head over heels for her at first sight—I want her to be my wife!”
“Alright then,” Huo Jianan said, relieved. “I sincerely wish you the best in winning over Doctor Jiang.”
During dinner, Meng Xien, who had been eating contentedly, suddenly glanced at Huo Jianan across the table and asked, “Jianan, what’s with all the afternoon leave requests lately? What are you and Wang Baobao up to?”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. She lowered her head deeper into her bowl. “Nothing much. Just playing games with Wang Baobao. You know how I am—I can’t go too long without gaming. It drives me crazy.”
Grandmother Huo shook her head. “You still don’t understand your sister. Games are her life. She’s a little better now, only playing half a day, but before, she was immersed in them from dawn till dusk.”
Huo Jianan protested, “That’s not true! Grandmother, you’re talking nonsense! You’re slandering me!”
Meng Xien chuckled. “Right, slandering you. Aside from games, Nianning is your life. Between games and her, they each take up half of your time.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Grandmother Huo continued, “You visited the set last time. How is your wife doing with the production? No one would dare to mistreat her, would they?”
