- Chapter 36 - My Wife is Using Her Beauty on Me Again
Wang Baobao was at home, inviting friends over for a gaming session, when Huo Jianan called. “What’s up? Did you already get news from your wife?”
“No, she’s probably filming right now. I usually wait until she’s done for the day and contact her in the evening. I called to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“Have you heard of Soul Corporation, the game developer?”
“Who hasn’t? It’s the Soul Corporation! Isn’t Glory Mission your favorite game?”
“Do you know anyone who’s familiar with the company?”
“Why? Are you thinking of switching to Soul? Their competitive team? No offense, but unless your hands were fine, you’d have a shot. Now… forget it.”
“Enough chitchat. Just tell me if you know anyone who knows the company.”
“Nope.” Loud video game combat sounds blared from the other end of the line, punctuated by Wang Baobao’s increasingly frantic shouts: “Holy shit! Holy shit!”
Huo Jianan pulled the phone away from her ear, shooting a disdainful glance at it. If he were sitting next to her gaming, his relentless “holy shit” barrage would surely deafen her.
“Got it! I’ll crush you bastards!” Wang Baobao declared triumphantly after securing a decisive victory in the battle. “I’m not familiar with Soul, but I know someone who is. I think Zhenzhen mentioned her cousin’s son is a minor manager there.”
Huo Jianan’s eyes lit up. “Try to arrange a meeting with him. Don’t mention me or Huo Corporation.”
Wang Baobao sensed a mysterious undercurrent. “What’s this about? What are you planning?”
“Don’t ask so many questions. Just inquire about Soul. We can discuss the details tomorrow.”
“Fine! Don’t forget about my weight loss mission.”
“Got it.”
At dinner that evening, Xu Weiyi served Meng Xien and Huo Jianan. “Eat well. It’s rare for everyone to be home for dinner these days.”
“Thank you, Aunt Xu.”
Huo Jianan dug in eagerly, accepting every bite Grandmother placed on her plate. Her daily leg rehabilitation exercises left her famished.
She glanced up at Meng Xien across the table, who was poking a piece of chicken Grandmother had served her with her chopsticks, leaving it untouched. “Sister Meng, why aren’t you eating? This chicken is delicious.”
Grandmother Huo asked, “Xien, are you feeling unwell?”
Meng Xien forced a smile. “No, I’m fine. I just had a snack this afternoon and wasn’t very hungry.”
Grandmother Huo looked at Meng Xien with concern. “Don’t push yourself too hard. I’ve noticed you’ve been exhausted lately. Later, I’ll have Housekeeper Zhou prepare a bowl of lily bulb and lotus seed soup for you. Eat it and rest early—before midnight.”
“I know my limits. Thank you, Aunt Xu.”
After the meal, Grandmother Huo called both women into the living room.
“Nannan, you’ve officially joined Huo Corporation. We’re delighted that you’re willing to help manage the company, both Sister Meng and I. This afternoon, Sister Meng spoke with me. Since you understand the gaming industry, we’ve decided you should lead this acquisition.”
Huo Jianan was startled. Lead this acquisition?! Her heart raced with panic.
“No, Grandmother! I can’t do this! I’ve just joined the company—I don’t have any experience!”
Grandmother Huo frowned sternly. “You’re a descendant of the Huo family, my granddaughter Xu Weiyi. To panic and feel helpless before even facing success or failure—what kind of image is that?”
Huo Jianan, chastened, bowed her head in shame. “Yes, I understand.”
Meng Xien patted Jianan’s hand. “Don’t worry. I’ll support you. You’re new to corporate management, but you understand games. In this area, Sister Meng and Grandmother are both outsiders. We want to hear your ideas, which is why we’ve decided to let you lead this acquisition. The proposed deal is worth approximately 40 billion yuan.”
“Four billion?!”
Huo Jianan shuddered in shock.
Four billion! An unimaginable sum of money! If converted into hundred-yuan bills, it could bury her alive!
Meng Xien smiled reassuringly. “It’s alright. Believe in yourself.”
Huo Jianan swallowed hard, her throat dry. She stole a glance at her grandmother, seated with imposing dignity on the opposite sofa, her heart pounding. The words “I can’t do it” were now too frightening to utter.
“Alright! I understand! Grandmother, Sister Meng, I’ll do my utmost!”
“Good. That’s all we ask,” Meng Xien said, her gaze encouraging.
Huo Jianan wheeled herself out nervously. Only when she removed her hands from the armrests did she realize her palms were clammy with sweat.
Four billion! The pressure was overwhelming!
With this colossal sword of Damocles hanging over her head, Huo Jianan feared she wouldn’t be able to sleep soundly again.
Meng Xien watched Jianan’s retreating figure before turning to Xu Weiyi. “Aunt Xu, you’ve frightened Jianan.”
Xu Weiyi glanced at her granddaughter’s departing back, her expression complex. “I know it’s a tremendous pressure and challenge for her. But I want her to grow up quickly and take over the company soon. This is an excellent opportunity.”
“Aunt Xu, aren’t you worried you’re pushing her too hard?”
“You’re helping her, aren’t you?” Xu Weiyi sighed. “My health isn’t what it used to be. I don’t know how many more years I have left. While I still can, I want to see if she has what it takes to run the family business.”
Meng Xien panicked. “Aunt Xu, what are you saying? You’ve always been so strong and spirited! Huo Corporation needs you. You could manage it for another ten, even twenty years if you wanted!”
Xu Weiyi shook her head. “It’s not possible. Age catches up to us all. The future of the company will be in your hands. I have no concerns except for Jianan. She’s just like her mother—stubborn and prone to getting stuck in her ways, even more sensitive than her mother. Her marriage has helped her mature, though. Promise me, Xien, that after I’m gone, you’ll take care of Jianan as if she were your own sister. But don’t spoil her. If she needs to be corrected in business matters, you must speak up. And if she truly lacks the aptitude, you must take over Huo Corporation yourself.”
Meng Xien felt a lump rise in her throat, a mix of surprise, gratitude, regret, and shame pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, forcing back the tears welling in her eyes, and managed a strained smile. “Aunt Xu, I will do everything in my power to support Jianan. She is my sister—my only sister.”
That evening, Huo Jianan remained in her study, her wheelchair positioned by the window as she stared blankly at the night scenery.
The 40 billion yuan acquisition of Soul—success meant everything would be fine, but failure… what would it mean financially? She wasn’t sure. Perhaps, given the Huo Corporation’s deep roots and vast resources, it would only weaken them temporarily, not fatally. But one thing was certain: everyone would look down on her as the new boss.
Some might even say, “A cripple is a cripple. This is what happens when you let a cripple lead them.”
“A spoiled brat who knows nothing but eating, drinking, and enjoying herself. What could she possibly accomplish?”
“Just desperate for glory! Why did she have to go and acquire them?! Now she’s lost both the Madam and the soldiers! If she hadn’t meddled, none of this would have happened!”
“Who does she think she is? Some kind of legend? A business genius? There aren’t that many geniuses in the world!”
“Exactly! She’s already crippled—why not just settle down and enjoy being a useless plaything?”
It wasn’t until Ruan Nianning’s video call came through that Huo Jianan snapped out of her drifting thoughts.
“What’s wrong, Jianan?” Since their marriage, Ruan Nianning had never seen such worry in Huo Jianan’s eyes. The usually calm and deep gaze now held an uncommon anxiety, a profound concern stemming from some uncertainty.
“Is something bothering you?”
Huo Jianan brushed away the worry in her eyes with a smile. “It’s nothing, just work stuff.”
“What is it? Tell me.”
“It’s nothing, really, just a minor issue.”
“Come on, tell me!”
“I swear, it’s nothing.”
Ruan Nianning’s voice sharpened with displeasure. “Huo Jianan, we agreed you wouldn’t keep secrets from me! Just tell me!”
Huo Jianan hesitated. “Fine. What I’m about to tell you is strictly confidential. You can’t breathe a word of this to anyone.”
Ruan Nianning’s face lit up with anticipation. “Go on, I promise I won’t reveal a thing. I just want to see if I can help.”
“Alright. Our company is considering acquiring Soul Corporation for around 40 billion yuan. Do you think I should agree to this deal?”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
When Ruan Nianning heard the figure of 40 billion, her eyes widened, and her expression froze momentarily. “That… that much?!”
“Hmm, and what’s your brilliant insight, my dear wife?”
“This… I, I…” Ruan Nianning’s tongue felt tied. Embarrassed, she asked, “What exactly does Soul Corporation do?”
After Huo Jianan explained Soul Corporation’s business, Ruan Nianning responded with a noncommittal, “Oh, I see.” She added, “They sound really impressive, don’t they? They must be making a lot of money.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “They are currently very profitable.” She then asked with a smile, “Wife, do you think I should acquire them?”
“Well…” Ruan Nianning avoided her gaze. She only knew about acting; she had no understanding of corporate acquisitions. But since she had asked about it herself, she couldn’t simply say she didn’t know.
Ruan Nianning: “Just give me a moment. I haven’t even had a sip of water since wrapping up work. Let me catch my breath first.”
With that, she put down the phone, walked to the mini-bar, and picked up a bottle of water from the table, but hesitated to open it.
In this corner, Huo Jianan couldn’t see her.
Ruan Nianning, still flustered, let out a relieved sigh. But her relief was short-lived as her brow furrowed, a sudden thought striking her.
Huo Jianan was asking for her opinion on a 40-billion-yuan decision, wasn’t she?
If Huo Corporation spent 40 billion on acquiring Soul Corporation, only for it to perform disastrously later, the Huo family would suffer a catastrophic loss. Even if it didn’t spell their ruin, such a massive hemorrhage would severely weaken their financial strength.
Perfect! Ruan Nianning thought. Xu Weiyi, with her pride, would never admit she’d misjudged the situation. Even if she maintained a facade of composure, this bitter pill would surely choke her from within.
A cruel smile curled Ruan Nianning’s lips, her eyes gleaming with malice.
But then another thought struck her. What if Soul Corporation truly was exceptional, and the acquisition actually brought substantial profits to Huo Corporation? Wouldn’t that just benefit Huo Corporation and further satisfy Xu Weiyi?
This prospect darkened Ruan Nianning’s expression. With a fierce twist of the bottle cap, she resolved, “I absolutely can’t let Xu Weiyi have her way!”
Clutching the water bottle, she sat back down in front of the camera. Her beautiful eyes sparkled with flirtatiousness as she rested her cheek in one hand and coquettishly winked at Huo Jianan.
Huo Jianan shivered, her body going weak, yet her mind remained razor-sharp.
My wife is using her feminine wiles again. Is she up to something? What is she trying to manipulate me into doing this time?
“Jianan, what do you think about this?”
Listening to her light, casual, and coquettish tone, it was as if they were discussing forty yuan instead of forty billion.
“I haven’t decided yet.”
“Then what does Grandmother mean? Does she want to acquire the company, or oppose the acquisition?”
Ruan Nianning’s strategy was clear: she would never let Xu Weiyi have her way!
If Xu Weiyi wanted to acquire the company, Ruan Nianning would incite Huo Jianan to vehemently oppose it and scuttle the deal. If Xu Weiyi opposed the acquisition, Ruan Nianning would urge Huo Jianan to insist on acquiring it and drive Xu Weiyi to her wits’ end!
“Grandmother means for me to take the lead and make the decision.” Huo Jianan shrugged. “That’s precisely what’s giving me a headache.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
She never imagined Xu Weiyi would entrust such a monumental decision to Huo Jianan, who had only joined the company a few days ago!
That woman!
Ruan Nianning gritted her teeth, torn between calling Xu Weiyi naive or cunningly calculating!
“Alright, Wife, I’ll give this matter careful consideration. But there’s something else I need your help with.”
“Go ahead.”
“Wang Baobao wants to lose weight this time, and he’s serious about it. Don’t all celebrities obsess over their figures? Do you have a professional team you could recommend?”
“Yes, I’ll send you their contact information later. But why the sudden need to lose weight?”
“Because some two-timing scumbag called him ‘fatso’ three times in a row.”
Ruan Nianning was both amused and annoyed. “Who could be so immoral? Such vicious name-calling!”
After hanging up, Ruan Nianning contacted the fitness team, briefly explained Wang Baobao’s situation, and sent the contact information to Huo Jianan. Then she opened her computer and began researching the Soul Corporation game company.
Damn it! She only knows how to play games; she knows nothing about the industry! And I can’t use Superstar Ruan’s name to ask her omnipotent fans about Soul Corporation—whether it’s a good company or worth investing in. Everyone knows I married into the Huo family. If I ask about Soul Corporation under Ruan Nianning’s name, even a fool would realize I’m asking on behalf of Huo Jianan behind the scenes.
After staying up until 2:30 AM researching, Ruan Nianning trudged to the film set the next day, her face etched with exhaustion. Song Shiyu, who was there, gasped in surprise. “Nianning, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“No, I just stayed up late last night dealing with some issues.”
Only heaven knew how many times she’d nearly snapped while researching! It was all incomprehensible gibberish! Why did it have to be a game company? she’d thought. Couldn’t they have acquired a clothing design firm or a cosmetics company instead?!
The more she researched, the more her head spun. On the verge of a breakdown, Ruan Nianning had nearly smashed her laptop.
Her performance during the day’s shoot was terrible.
She forgot her lines. After finally managing to utter one sentence with Song Shiyu’s prompting, she forgot the next words just as they reached her lips.
Not only did she forget her lines, but she also struggled to get into character. In the script, today’s scene involved paying her respects to the princess. As the princess’s most trusted confidante, she was to inform her of recent court matters and offer advice. However, their differing opinions led to a heated debate between the princess, her advisors, and herself.
Even during this heated debate, she had to maintain perfect composure. Though arguing with the princess and her patrons, she needed to balance assertiveness with deference, embodying both pride and submission.
This scene demanded a delicate balance: restrained loyalty, measured to the finest degree.
Director Zhang was confident in Ruan Nianning’s acting skills. As long as she performed as usual, everything should go smoothly. But when the shoot began, Ruan Nianning stood with such fierce intensity that every word she spoke seemed capable of leaving a crater in the ground.
The actress playing the princess trembled in fear. Help! She’s not just offering advice—she’s threatening me with death if I don’t obey!
“Cut!” Director Zhang called Ruan Nianning over and patiently explained the scene to her for ten minutes.
“Nianning, I believe in your professional skills. Go cool down and adjust yourself,” Director Zhang announced over the megaphone. “Everyone, take a half-hour break!”
Ruan Nianning was overwhelmed with shame. Even she was deeply dissatisfied with her performance today. Losing control of her emotions was unbecoming of a professional actress.
It was all Huo Jianan’s fault! Why did she have to say those things last night? She was deliberately sabotaging her ability to focus on her acting!
Everyone could hear the Young Madam, Ruan Nianning, storming around and cursing. “Damn Huo Jianan! Damn! Damn!”
Xiao Zhu and the other staff members exchanged glances. So it was because of Miss Huo! Had Miss Huo just visited the set? Was Sister Ning missing her wealthy Young Miss status again?
Song Shiyu smiled at her. “The Young Madam of the wealthy family is quite irritable today, isn’t she?”
Ruan Nianning flushed, though whether from anger or anxiety, she couldn’t tell. “Sister Song, you’re teasing me again.”
Xiao Tang, Film Empress Song’s assistant, brought over a freshly cut Snow White Melon. The glistening flesh looked refreshingly juicy and thirst-quenching.
“I’m not teasing you,” Song Shiyu said. “Eat something to cool down.”
Ruan Nianning tasted a piece. “Is this Snow White Melon?”
“You really are a Young Madam,” Song Shiyu remarked. “You recognized it instantly.”
“How did you know I like this melon?”
“Miss Huo mentioned it last time she visited. She asked me to look after you and gave Xiao Tang some money to help Xiao Zhu take care of your diet.”
Ruan Nianning was stunned, not realizing it was Huo Jianan’s doing.
“Nianning, I’ll say it again: Miss Huo has been very good to you, especially after the wedding. She’s grown up so much. At first, when she was pursuing you, I was a little worried about you. But now, I believe Miss Huo is an Alpha worthy of entrusting your life to. Your days as a Young Madam will be very happy.”
Song Shiyu and Ruan Nianning shared an extraordinary bond. Thanks to her support, Ruan Nianning was able to smoothly debut and establish her career. Song Shiyu often guided her, offering advice on acting and navigating life’s challenges.
It could be said that without Song Shiyu, there would be no Ruan Nianning of today.
Ruan Nianning regarded her as a sister, a blood sister. After her mother’s passing, Song Shiyu became her closest family.
“Do you really think I don’t know your temper? Most of the time you’re fine, but when you lose your temper, you’re fierce and explosive, like you’re going to destroy the world. Next time, why don’t you try playing the villainous boss? Let everyone see your destructive power?”
Ruan Nianning burst out laughing, the fatigue and irritation in her heart dissipating significantly. “Sure, if I ever get the chance, I’ll play the big villain.”
After a pause, Song Shiyu asked, “You didn’t argue with Miss Huo last night, did you?”
“No,” Ruan Nianning replied, popping another piece of Snow White Melon into her mouth. Her cheeks puffed out, carrying an unnoticeable hint of pride. “She always yields to me and avoids big arguments.”
Song Shiyu sighed. “With such a wonderful wealthy wife, why don’t you cherish her?”
Ruan Nianning paused, startled. “I do know how to cherish her.”
As she lowered her head, Ruan Nianning’s smile faded.
It’s not that I don’t want to cherish her… But she’s the daughter of my enemy. How can I truly cherish her?
******
Huo Jianan: Wife, if you cherish me, give me a kiss.
Ruan Nianning: It seems like you get restless if you don’t get kissed at least once a day.
