- Chapter 34.1 - Collateral Damage
Early in the morning, Huo Jianan descended from her room and appeared at the dining table.
Grandmother Huo was somewhat surprised. “What time did you get home last night?”
“Grandmother, after I got off the plane, I went to Wang Baobao’s place to hang out. I didn’t come home until almost midnight. I didn’t want to wake you, so I didn’t come to see you.”
Huo Jianan was telling the truth. As soon as she got off the plane, Wang Baobao dragged her to his place to play games, claiming he hadn’t played in two days and his hands were itching. He’d already thanked Huo Jianan in advance for exposing the scumbag’s true nature to Doctor Jiang, and for risking his life to play games with him, a hopeless gamer.
This was the first time the transmigrated Huo Jianan had been to Wang Baobao’s home. Wang Baobao lived alone in a spacious duplex. Besides a living room big enough for impromptu parties, he also had an enormous gaming room.
The house was large and looked beautiful from the outside, but inside it was a complete mess. Alongside computers, keyboards, and gaming equipment, the most common items were drink bottles and takeout containers.
Huo Jianan felt like she’d sat down in a rat’s nest.
Wang Baobao kicked aside the takeout boxes blocking the way, clearing a path for Huo Jianan’s wheelchair. “Dada, please take a seat.”
Huo Jianan stared at the dusty gaming chair, feeling for the first time that her wheelchair was far superior—comfortable and clean, without the worry of food stains or spills.
“Baobao, do you truly love Doctor Jiang?”
“Of course! It was love at first sight. Her nose, eyes, even her hair… everything about her matches my ideal.”
“Is she your goddess?”
“Absolutely! She’s my goddess!”
“Then, could you do your goddess a favor and clean this place? Would you want your goddess to live in a dump with you?”
Wang Baobao imagined Doctor Jiang, pristine and gentle, sitting amidst the clutter, radiating an aura tainted by the scent of spoiled food…
She glanced around awkwardly. “It’s been a few days since I’ve been here. I forgot to ask Auntie to clean up before I left.”
After settling Huo Jianan, Wang Baobao grabbed several cans of soda, juice, and beer from the fridge, along with a mountain of potato chips, shrimp crackers, and biscuits.
Watching Baobao devour a bottle of beer and two bags of snacks in one go, Huo Jianan thought, How the hell doesn’t she gain weight eating like that? Especially with her cursed, easily-overweight genes—the kind where even drinking water makes you fat.
“Baobao, are you stuffed?”
“No way! I’ve only eaten two bags. That’s barely enough to fill the gaps between my teeth.”
“You might as well eat until you burst! With the way you’re scarfing it down, you’ll never lose weight.”
“I do plan to lose weight,” Wang Baobao said, shoving in several more pieces. “Just not until I’m full.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
At the dining table, Huo Jianan served herself a bowl of congee and handed a honeycomb pastry to Meng Xien. “Sister Meng, I came to see you last night when I got back, but you weren’t home yet.”
Meng Xien accepted the pastry. “I had a work dinner last night and went to a bar afterward, so I got back late.”
Watching Meng Xien eat the honeycomb pastry without any hesitation, Huo Jianan secretly admired her. She herself had tried a few of the steam-fried buns, but still found the juicy, savory ones to be far superior.
Grandmother Huo: “How’s your wife doing over there?”
“Pretty well. The filming is going smoothly, and the hotel is decent.”
“You were only there for two or three days. Could you bear to leave your wife?”
Huo Jianan detected a hint of jealousy in her grandmother’s voice. Smiling, she replied, “I miss you too, Grandmother. I can visit the set again in the future.”
Meng Xien glanced at the bruise on her forehead. It had healed considerably, and after applying concealer, it was completely concealed.
“Aunt Xu, we’ll just have to wait and see. Christmas is coming up soon, and she’ll definitely fly back to see her wife again. Who knows, Aunt Xu? You might even hold your great-granddaughter next year.”
Huo Jianan flushed, retorting defensively, “I’m now a vice president at Huo Corporation. How can I keep taking random days off? Three days fishing and two days drying the nets? Nianning is perfectly fine where she is. I won’t bother her with frequent visits.”
After breakfast, the family of three went to work at Huo Corporation, each with their own car and dedicated driver.
Ying reminded her, “President Huo, you have several interviews scheduled today. Should they proceed as planned?”
Huo Jianan paused, then remembered. Last week, Ying had submitted several resumes for candidates applying for the position of Executive Assistant.
At the time, Huo Jianan had flipped through them, remarking in surprise, “They’re all quite pretty. Is HR holding a beauty pageant for me?”
Ying smiled and explained, “The assistant will sometimes accompany you to formal events, so appearance and demeanor are important.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “Alright, let’s schedule everything for this morning. I’ll need to take the afternoon off.”
Ying: “……” President Huo just returned, and she’s already asking for time off?!
After interviewing four candidates in a row, Huo Jianan picked up a resume. “This is the one. Min Jiru.”
“Understood,” Ying replied, taking the resume. “I’ll notify HR immediately.”
Inside the interview room, the recruitment manager was speaking with Min Jiru. “Young Miss Min, do you have any further questions?”
Min Jiru pursed her lips, cautiously asking, “The person who interviewed me earlier, President Huo, she’ll be my boss, right?”
“Yes,” the recruitment manager confirmed. “President Huo will indeed be your direct supervisor.”
“She won’t be replaced with someone else, will she? I… I mean, I really like President Huo and would love to work under her.”
Though finding the question somewhat odd, the recruitment manager answered, “As her assistant, unless there are special circumstances, you won’t be reassigned to another supervisor.”
“O-okay, then I have no further questions.”
“Can you start tomorrow?”
“Yes, I can.”
In the afternoon, Huo Jianan, who had taken a few days off, was undergoing rehabilitation at the hospital. After just three or four days of interruption, she found the training much more strenuous.
Behind her, Jiang Shumin occasionally supported Huo Jianan’s waist, encouraging her steadily, “Good, Miss Huo. Keep going, keep pushing through.”
Wang Baobao watched Huo Jianan’s treatment with unbridled envy, wishing fervently that it were she who was incapacitated, and that Doctor Jiang were encouraging her instead.
Noticing Jiang Shumin’s strained expression, Wang Baobao, concerned for the doctor, offered to help. “Doctor Jiang, this is a strength-intensive task. You Omegas aren’t as strong as we Alphas. Let me take over—I’m stronger than you.”
Normally, a caregiver would assist while Doctor Jiang supervised. But with the caregiver absent today, the doctor had taken charge herself.
Huo Jianan was drenched in sweat, her forehead glistening with beads of perspiration. She paused. “Right, Doctor Jiang. Why don’t you let Wang Baobao give it a try?”
“It’s alright,” Doctor Jiang shook her head. “Though I may not match your Alpha strength, I can manage the assistance.” After prolonged effort, even Doctor Jiang’s face flushed crimson, her snow-white forehead glistening with fine droplets of sweat.
Wang Baobao said, “Doctor Jiang, let me give it a try. Please tell me if I’m doing it right.”
He was surprised to find that Wang Baobao performed the task with surprising skill.
Huo Jianan turned to Doctor Jiang. “Please rest for a moment, Doctor Jiang. Let Wang Baobao assist me for a while.”
Unable to dissuade her, Doctor Jiang asked, “Miss Huo, you’ve been training for quite some time. Would you like to rest now?”
Huo Jianan panted heavily, pausing briefly, but her gaze remained unwavering. “No, I’ll rest after I reach the end.”
Doctor Jiang observed Miss Huo, who persisted in her training. She had a gentle and refined demeanor, treating everyone with courtesy. What struck him most was her remarkable resilience and perseverance. This kind of training demanded extraordinary endurance and determination, yet she never complained about pain or fatigue.
He couldn’t help but recall the Director’s assessment of Miss Huo: “She has a Young Miss’s temper, gets easily upset, and is very afraid of pain.”
Is this the same person?
Doctor Jiang smiled warmly and kindly. “Very well.”
Seeing this smile, Wang Baobao acted as if guarding a precious treasure from being taken away. Once Huo Jianan painfully “walked” to the end, he helped her down. “Dada, stop practicing for now. Rest a bit.”
“Miss Huo, you’re doing very well,” Doctor Jiang said.
Huo Jianan panted heavily, laughing. “Really? I need to keep training so I can stand up sooner.”
“Here, have some water.” Wang Baobao offered her a bottle.
In the past, Huo Jianan used to grab water from the table herself. Later, Wang Baobao insisted on fetching it for her. Now, parched from the heat, she wanted to drink, but Baobao had brought the water—only to bypass her and hand it directly to Doctor Jiang.
Huo Jianan: “…” She inwardly scoffed, I knew it! The flirt!
Just as Huo Jianan was about to reach for the water, Doctor Jiang handed it to her, along with two tissues. “Here, have some water, and use these to wipe yourself.”
Touched, Huo Jianan accepted the water and tissues. “Thank you, Doctor Jiang.”
Huo Jianan was sweltering. The painful training had left her face flushed, her forehead, neck, and back drenched in sweat. She grabbed the tissues and roughly wiped her sweaty face, then looped them around her sweat-soaked neck.
The trash bin was out of reach, so Huo Jianan casually tossed the used tissues onto the table, intending to throw them away after resting.
Unexpectedly, Wang Baobao was the first to react, grabbing the used tissue. “Don’t just throw it away! Don’t you know it’s covered in pheromones? Let me toss it for you.”
Pheromones?
Huo Jianan’s face flushed crimson as she belatedly remembered wiping the gland at the back of her neck. The tissue was likely saturated with her pheromones, and since Doctor Jiang, an Omega, was sitting right there, casually tossing the pheromone-laden tissue in front of her was a remarkably rude gesture.
Embarrassed, Huo Jianan stammered, “I’m sorry, Doctor Jiang. I’m so embarrassed. I forgot I’d wiped my neck.”
Before Doctor Jiang could respond, Wang Baobao chimed in again, “Dada, rest here. I’ll toss the trash.” With that, he casually tossed the tissue out the door.
No sooner had he left than Doctor Jiang received a call.
It was probably from that Scumbag. “Why are you here so early…? I’ll need about half an hour more.” Doctor Jiang smiled sweetly into the phone. “Didn’t you say you were exhausted from your business trip? Rest in the car for a bit. I’ll join you as soon as I’m done here…”
I don’t know what that scumbag told her, but Doctor Jiang blushed and glanced at Huo Jianan before getting up and walking a few steps away, turning her back. Huo Jianan heard her say in a shy, hushed voice, “I love you too… Alright, I said it. Now you should get some rest. I know, be good. I’ll come find you after I finish my work.”
Huo Jianan sighed inwardly. That scumbag was such a master at pretending—acting like a pure, innocent puppy, insisting her girlfriend say she loved her and coddle her before she’d be satisfied.
“Doctor Jiang.” Huo Jianan glanced at the doctor, whose eyes held a smile. Like all people in love, Doctor Jiang was like a young girl deeply immersed in a beautiful romance. Huo Jianan felt a pang of sympathy. Just as Wang Baobao had said, Doctor Jiang was a kind and caring person who devoted herself to treating Huo Jianan. Moreover, Huo Jianan recalled that day when Doctor Jiang had blocked the oranges that nearly hit her.
That kind of scumbag didn’t deserve such an outstanding and righteous girl.
“Hmm? What is it, Miss Huo?” Doctor Jiang locked her phone and put it in her pocket.
“Miss Jiang’s girlfriend came to pick you up again? Why don’t we end training early today?”
“No need. She arrived early today, and there was no traffic. It’s perfect—she can rest in the car.”
“Your girlfriend works hard too.”
“She was on a business trip in City D a few days ago. It must have been exhausting. I want her to rest properly.”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat at the mention of City D. Wang Baobao’s words flooded her mind, crashing against her thoughts like a tidal wave. But when she tried to speak, the words caught in her throat.
