- Chapter 33 - The True Colors of a Scum Woman
Ruan Nianning arrived at the filming location unusually early, even earlier than Song Shiyu, who was typically the first to arrive.
“Nianning, you’re here early today,” Song Shiyu remarked.
“I couldn’t sleep. I barely got any rest last night.”
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing. Jianan is returning to Changbin today, so I decided to come early.”
Hearing this, the two assistants exchanged knowing glances, both secretly smiling at Sister Ning’s mention of “barely got any rest last night.”
Xiao Tang, Song Shiyu’s assistant, asked, “Sister Song, would you like the same breakfast from that restaurant as before?”
“Yes, the same place. But no milk today. I’ll have a hot coffee, and get one for Nianning too.”
“Right away, Sister Song.”
Song Shiyu noticed Ruan Nianning’s weary demeanor and vacant expression, as if lost in thought.
“Come on, let’s go to my dressing room and have breakfast together later.”
Ruan Nianning nodded absentmindedly.
“What’s wrong? Missing Jianan?”
Ruan Nianning paused, then her face flushed crimson. “What?! Sister Song, you’re teasing me first thing in the morning! If you keep this up, I’m leaving!”
Ruan Nianning and Song Shiyu were close; in front of Song Shiyu, she acted like a little sister.
“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. I just noticed you seemed tired. I was worried you wouldn’t have the energy for filming later.”
“I’ll be fine. I’ve pulled all-nighters before and still managed to film for another day and night straight. I survived that, didn’t I?”
Song Shiyu knew exactly what “before” referred to: the filming period of the drama where she had recommended the struggling Ruan Nianning for the role of the third female lead.
Ruan Nianning wasn’t just a skilled actress; she was also incredibly dedicated. She memorized not only her own lines but even her co-stars’ parts. Her looks were striking—young, beautiful, and proud, with a stubborn core, yet she remained humble enough to seek advice from her seniors on set. It was no surprise such a person would rise to prominence and achieve great success.
“You know, your Jia Nan seems different lately—much more talkative.”
Song Shiyu could sense that Huo Jianan harbored some resentment towards her. Even after learning that she and Ruan Nianning were purely close friends, almost like sisters, and even colleagues, Miss Huo’s gaze still carried a hint of hostility.
During their meetings, Ruan Nianning did most of the talking, while Miss Huo observed coldly from the side, occasionally shooting Song Shiyu icy glances with pursed lips. She rarely spoke, only offering brief agreements when directly asked.
Perhaps deep down, Miss Huo was unwilling for Ruan Nianning to interact with anyone besides herself.
This time, however, Miss Huo was remarkably friendly and warm, elegant and courteous.
“Really?”
Song Shiyu, a seasoned actress who spent years studying characters’ expressions, movements, and emotions, was deeply struck by Huo Jianan’s astonishing transformation.
For the first time, Huo Jianan even declared that Ruan Nianning’s friends were her friends too. Film Empress Song keenly noticed that the inexplicable hostility in Huo Jianan’s gaze towards her had vanished, replaced by a gentle, friendly look between equals.
“It feels like Jianan has become a completely different person after her marriage,” Song Shiyu remarked. “Her temperament and personality have changed so much.”
At her words, Ruan Nianning was reminded of all the changes Huo Jianan had undergone after her marriage: she was no longer afraid of being in the spotlight, could calmly accept the attention people directed at her, had shed her hysterical madness, and no longer exhibited that suffocating need for control. She even didn’t recognize Song Shiyu or Xiao Tao anymore…
Ruan Nianning smiled. “It’s true, she’s changed a lot after marriage. I was baffled by how much someone could change between before and after marriage. I almost thought she’d lost her memory.”
Song Shiyu scoffed. “This isn’t a movie. There’s no way someone would lose their memory like that.”
Xiao Zhu chimed in casually, “Maybe Miss Huo had some kind of accident. She might be a time traveler, or even an alien disguised as one of us Earthlings.”
Song Shiyu burst out laughing. “Xiao Zhu, if you don’t start studying screenwriting from Screenwriter Yu, you’ll end up making a sci-fi horror movie.”
Xiao Zhu teased, “Sister Song, sci-fi horror movies are thrilling and full of adrenaline. Why don’t you make one someday? I’ve never seen you in a sci-fi film. How about aliens invading Earth, mutating humans into zombies and besieging cities?”
Song Shiyu smiled and asked, “Sister Ning hasn’t acted in this kind of film either. Why didn’t you suggest her for the role?”
“I dare not. If Miss Huo found out I was the one who suggested Sister Ning go zombie hunting in a post-apocalyptic world, I’d be afraid she’d send her henchmen after me…”
As they continued their conversation, Ruan Nianning’s heart churned with tumultuous waves of thought, sinking deep into contemplation.
Is Huo Jianan really someone who’s traveled through time? Or is she truly different from all of us?
If that’s the case, everything would make sense.
After disembarking from the plane, Wang Baobao drove Huo Jianan home.
Noticing her silence throughout the ride, and her restless sleep on the plane, Wang Baobao asked, “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“Just a little annoyed.”
“Why?”
“Do you know Doctor Jiang’s girlfriend?”
“I’ve met her once and exchanged a few words, but I don’t remember much.”
Wang Baobao paused, then asked, “Was she short-haired, with cold brown hair and a mole on her nose?”
Huo Jianan strained her memory. She’d only seen Doctor Jiang’s girlfriend briefly in her wheelchair when she came to pick him up from the hospital, and the encounter hadn’t left a strong impression.
“Short hair, and I think there’s a mole on her nose. I don’t remember what color her hair was. Why are you asking? Did you meet her girlfriend?”
Wang Baobao nodded. “I don’t recognize Doctor Jiang’s girlfriend, so I can’t say I ‘met’ her. That day, after seeing my idol on the set, I went back to the hotel. I was originally going to find you.”
“Then why didn’t you come?”
“Do you remember the night we first arrived in City D? After dinner, you and Sister-in-law went back to your room first. I ran into two women in the hallway. They were all over each other as they went into their room. At first, I didn’t pay attention, but then I heard the short-haired one answering a call. She was saying something about meeting a client here, being really busy, and needing to stay an extra two days.
When I heard that, I knew she was a two-timer, sneaking around behind her girlfriend’s back. It’s a common enough story, and I wouldn’t have paid it any mind, except that when she hung up, she said, ‘Bye, Shumin. Love you.'”
Huo Jianan flinched at the name “Shumin,” immediately thinking of Doctor Jiang. “It’s just a coincidence,” she quickly added. “Maybe they just happen to have the same name?”
“I thought the same. They opened their door and went inside, immediately throwing their arms around each other and kissing. I glanced away and left.”
The next day, when I saw my idol returning from the film set, I ran into those two again. They had just come out of their room, looking ready to go out and have fun. Suddenly, I wondered, “What if Shumin really is Doctor Jiang?” Her girlfriend seemed so sleazy, running around and having fun outside. How could such a kind person like Doctor Jiang marry someone so sleazy?
The more I thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. I almost wanted to call Doctor Jiang right away and ask, “Where is your girlfriend? Is she in Changbin?”
Huo Jianan: “Did you call?”
Wang Baobao shrugged. “No, I didn’t. I wouldn’t call over something so speculative. Besides, I’m not that close to Doctor Jiang anyway.”
“And then?”
“And then I became a stalker. I followed them around, shopping, eating, and going to bars. They stayed out until past 2 AM, and I followed them back to their hotel.”
Wang Baobao sighed. “You know, I was torn inside. Part of me hoped Shumin was Doctor Jiang, but another part hoped she wasn’t.”
Huo Jianan understood. No wonder Wang Baobao sounded so exhausted when I called her early yesterday morning, saying she’d gone “stalking.” Now that she’d discovered the sleazy girlfriend’s antics, she probably hadn’t slept a wink.
“The next day, around noon, when they’d probably woken up, I started tailing them again.”
After checking out of their hotel, the two women went to a restaurant. The restaurant’s decor clearly indicated it was a couples-themed establishment. As soon as they arrived, they embraced and began feeding each other. I sat down nearby and ordered my own meal.
To my surprise, the food at this restaurant was actually quite good. You have no idea how unbearably spicy the food was at the restaurant they went to last night—it was downright insane. I didn’t even get full, barely ate anything at the bar last night, and skipped breakfast this morning. Seeing them dig in so enthusiastically made me starving, and I started devouring my meal just as hungrily. Let me tell you, their perilla duck was truly exceptional—fragrant, tender, and full of flavor.”
Huo Jianan pulled her back to the main topic. “Enough about the food. Tell me about them.”
“After we ate for a while, I finally heard her making another call. Just as I was about to sneak closer to see if she was calling Doctor Jiang, her boyfriend spoke up, sounding annoyed. He was probably upset about her constant phone calls and asked something like, ‘We finally got two days off to have some fun, and you’re calling someone again? Did you find a new toy?’
That shameless slut actually had the nerve to say she wasn’t promiscuous, that she only spends weekends with one “special someone”—this week it was him, and everyone else could stay out of the way. She claimed she was calling Jiang Shumin.
When I heard the name “Jiang Shumin,” my heart skipped a beat. I was increasingly convinced that the Jiang Shumin they were talking about was Doctor Jiang!
The woman asked the slut what she lacked compared to Jiang Shumin. “We’re both Omegas, and she’s even prettier than Jiang Shumin.”
I thought to myself, “Look at that slutty act. You’re nothing compared to Doctor Jiang.”
“What did the slut say?”
“She said she also thinks Jiang Shumin is boring and too prudish. She wouldn’t let the slut fully mark her before marriage, only allowing kisses. She’s long since grown tired of it. If her mother hadn’t favored this type of daughter-in-law, she would have broken up with her long ago. But Jiang Shumin does have one big advantage: she’s easy to please and doesn’t constantly nag about buying this or that. A cup of coffee is enough to satisfy her.”
The young lover wouldn’t stand for that and accused her of lying, claiming she just couldn’t stand spending money on her. The slut immediately agreed to buy her two bags, then launched into a whole string of filthy talk, praising her as the best in bed and saying marking her was the most satisfying.
Listening to this made me want to vomit. It ruined my appetite. I wanted to kick the slut and make her call Jiang Shumin right then and there.
“Did she actually call?”
“Yes. After they finished kissing, she finally made the call.”
The moment she opened her mouth, it was “Shumin.” “Are you on duty today? Has your cold gotten any better?”
She pretended to be deeply affectionate and incredibly considerate over the phone, saying she couldn’t sleep because she missed her so much, all while cuddling her little lover and stealing kisses now and then.
“I’m about to explode with anger! If that really was Doctor Jiang on the other end of the line, she’d never marry such bullshit!”
“How can you be sure it was Doctor Jiang?”
Wang Baobao smirked proudly. “Simple. While they were talking, I called Doctor Jiang. Her phone was indeed in use.”
Huo Jianan’s eyes lit up. “Wang Baobao, you’re quite clever!”
“Of course. If I didn’t have some brains, could we still be the top team in XX Group?”
“What happened next?”
“After they left, I was still debating whether to follow them when Doctor Jiang called. She asked if something was wrong.”
“Did you tell her?”
“No. We can’t be 100% sure that the slut is Doctor Jiang’s girlfriend yet. What if Doctor Jiang happened to be with her friend when she made that call? But since I’d already reached Doctor Jiang, I had to say something. So I just told her you weren’t in Changbin these past two days and wouldn’t return until tomorrow or the day after to continue your treatment.”
Huo Jianan: “You’re using me as a decoy again.”
“What else could I have done? After calling her, I couldn’t just say nothing, could I?” Wang Baobao turned to look at her. “Now that we’ve confirmed her appearance, that trash woman is definitely Doctor Jiang’s cheating girlfriend. What should we do about this?”
Huo Jianan blinked. “Just tell Doctor Jiang. If the trash woman won’t break up, are you planning to keep her around for the New Year?”
“Then… then you tell Doctor Jiang. I secretly took a photo of her eating in the restaurant. You can show it to her as evidence.”
“Why me?” Huo Jianan asked.
“Well, I’m trying to pursue Doctor Jiang. If I say something, it’ll seem like I’m deliberately stirring things up. You’re the best person to tell her—you’re her patient and you know her better.”
Huo Jianan gritted her teeth. “Wang Baobao, you’re something else!”
Wang Baobao, relieved, said cheerfully, “Dada, just do me this one favor! I’ll be at your beck and call from now on, I promise I’ll take good care of you!”
Huo Jianan squeezed out a single word through gritted teeth: “Get lost!”
“You need to have a proper talk with Doctor Jiang. You must expose that deceitful woman’s true mask, but don’t upset her too much. Don’t make her too sad, but also make sure she doesn’t linger. Don’t hesitate to break up!”
Huo Jianan rolled her eyes. “With such a difficult task, why don’t you just handle it yourself?”
“You’re the newly appointed Vice President of Huo Corporation. How could you be afraid of a challenging task? Come on! Dada, you can do it!”
Huo Jianan: “……”
At Changbin’s True Colors Bar, the tall and slender Meng Xien immediately drew the attention of many beautiful women as she walked in.
Under the dim lighting, whispers spread: “A top-tier beauty has arrived!” “That aura and those eyes—she’s definitely an Alpha!” “I recognize her! She usually goes to the VIP rooms—she’s seriously rich! Weird, why is she at the bar today?”
Two long-haired Omegas in fitted skirts, each holding a drink, approached Meng Xien but were both rejected.
Meng Xien ordered a drink and pulled out a photo from her phone. She asked the bartender, “Have you seen her around lately? She should be about ten years older than she looks in this picture.”
The photo showed a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old girl, gentle and refined, sitting behind a table. Sunlight illuminated her snow-white, delicate face, and her beautiful eyes sparkled with light. Beneath her pure, snow-white aura, she was as charming as a finely crafted snow doll.
The bartender studied the photo carefully. “I think I remember her. I saw her a few days ago, but she hasn’t come back since.”
Meng Xienen suppressed the disappointment in her eyes. “Who was she with last time?”
“She came alone. There was another woman sitting here earlier, maybe a friend of hers. She was drunk, cursing incessantly, though I couldn’t tell who at. She probably called someone to come get her.”
“Do you know where she lives?”
The bartender shook his head. “I’m afraid not.”
At that moment, the bar manager approached. “Miss Meng, how may I assist you?”
Meng Xienen hadn’t visited the True Colors Bar often—only twice—but she was a major client, and the manager recognized her immediately. He always treated such valuable patrons with utmost courtesy and attentiveness.
Meng Xienen shook her head. “It’s nothing. I’m just looking for someone I saw here a few days ago.”
The manager gave her an understanding smile. “Don’t worry, Miss Meng. If she comes back, we’ll notify you immediately.”
Meng Xienen nodded. “Thank you. If you see her, call me no matter how late it is.”
“Alright, I’ll definitely let you know, Miss Meng.”
On the way back, Meng Xien took a turn and headed to Meizhi High School.
Meizhi High School was one of the top high schools in Changbin City. Ten years ago, it was a prestigious elite institution where the children of the city’s wealthiest families studied.
Ten years ago, 17-year-old Meng Xien had attended this very school. Even surrounded by wealthy classmates, the already-mated Alpha had stood out as the most captivating figure among them.
Her innate nobility and aloof, ascetic appearance had bewitched countless Omegas who pursued her.
A decade had passed, leaving faded marks on Meizhi’s once-snow-white walls. Yet outside the campus, the grove of gingkoes remained unchanged.
In late November, Changbin’s weather had grown bitterly cold. The landscape stretched out in a sea of golden leaves.
Meng Xien parked beneath one of these roadside trees, silently gazing at the golden expanse as if lost in distant memories. A complex, profound light flickered in her eyes.
She lowered her head and pulled up the same photo from her phone—the one she’d just shown at the bar for identification. Ten years had passed, but the person in the photo remained frozen in the innocent bloom of youth.
Meng Xien stared at that snow-white, pure, and endearingly lovely face. After an indeterminate amount of time, she finally put away her phone, started her car, and drove away.
