- Chapter 30.1 - Engaging in an Unending Embrace of Lips and Teeth
Clack! The director raised his megaphone and barked in displeasure, “Everyone, half-hour break!” His face brimmed with impatience, yet he restrained from exploding.
“Nianning, the character’s emotion right now is disgust, tinged with disdain. What you just did went too far—it was furious, like you’re about to grab an eighteen-meter greatsword and go on a killing rampage. The anger is too intense. Take some time to reflect and try to dial back the intensity of your emotions.”
He would have been cursing any other actor by now—four failed takes in a row! Who wouldn’t be cursing? But the actor was Ruan Nianning. Even if she weren’t already a first-tier star, her status as the Huo family’s future daughter-in-law meant no one dared truly reprimand her.
Song Shiyu approached and asked with concern, “Nianning, are you alright? You seem off today, really irritable. Did something happen?”
“No, I’m not angry,” Ruan Nianning forced a smile. “Just a little tired.”
Song Shiyu chuckled, “Did you have a fight with your wealthy Alpha wife?”
Just then, a crew member rushed in. “Sister Ning, someone’s here for you, outside the set.”
Ruan Nianning looked puzzled. “Who is it?”
“She said her name is Wang Baobao, and she’s a friend of yours.”
Ruan Nianning guessed who her visitor was almost instantly. She sprang up from her chair and hurried outside.
“Nianning!” Huo Jianan stood there, wearing a hat and sunglasses that left only her high nose bridge and delicate chin visible.
She sat in her wheelchair, dressed in impeccable professional attire. The high-quality fabric accentuated her petite frame. Under the early morning sun of City D, Province Y, the corners of her lips curved upward, soft strands of hair dancing in the breeze. A thin layer of golden light dusted her fair complexion, softening her frail appearance and adding a warm glow.
“What are you doing here?” The sudden, unexpected visit erased any lingering anger from Ruan Nianning’s mind.
“I came to apologize.” Huo Jianan turned and retrieved a large bouquet of Diana Roses from the car seat. “For you!”
Ruan Nianning froze momentarily before bending to accept the flowers. Seizing the opportunity, Huo Jianan gently grasped her wrist. “Wife, please don’t be angry anymore, okay?”
Her bright, puppy-like eyes stared earnestly at Ruan Nianning, filled with genuine innocence and vulnerability.
A warmth spread across Ruan Nianning’s face as the inexplicable anger within her vanished. “Stop grabbing onto me like this. What if someone sees?”
“I’m just talking to my wife. What’s wrong with that?” Huo Jianan smiled and released her grip, finding Ruan Nianning’s bashful, embarrassed expression quite adorable.
“You’re not cold sitting out here in so little? Get in the car!”
“I’m fine. It’s warmer here than in Changbin.”
“Don’t you know the weather changed in City D today? It’s gotten colder. Get in!” Ruan Nianning’s words were as cold and sharp as icicles, yet she set the roses aside and carefully helped Huo Jianan into the car.
Once Huo Jianan was seated, Ruan Nianning climbed in as well.
Wang Baobao, noticing this, tactfully moved aside. He craned his neck to look back at the production team. Where’s Song Shiyu? My idol?
The car’s heater blocked out the winter chill, and the two settled into the back seats.
“Why didn’t you call ahead before coming?” Ruan Nianning asked. “And running over here in such light clothes?”
“I was at the office. I came as soon as you called. Honey, I really was celebrating Wang Baobao’s birthday last night. Then I went out for some fresh air and…” Huo Jianan glanced at her expression, speaking cautiously. “And I ran into Zou Xiaojing. Her friends invited me to their private room. I swear I just said hello and… and took a group photo.”
“Why didn’t you mention you ran into Zou Xiaojing during our phone call this morning?”
“Do you think you’d have believed me if I told you I just ran into her at a bar? You were so furious, you’d have made up all sorts of wild stories.”
Ruan Nianning rolled her eyes. “Who’s making up stories? You’re the one who didn’t tell me. How would I know I wouldn’t have believed you? You’re the one who kept it from me.”
Huo Jianan lowered her head and fell silent.
“Why did you go and get involved with her friends?”
“I wasn’t ‘involved’! I just exchanged greetings. The host of the private room was a business owner who simply wanted to meet me. Nothing inappropriate happened. When you’re out, you have to give people their due respect.”
Ruan Nianning scoffed. “Stop associating with those Zou family members!”
“I’m not associating with them! I swear!” Huo Jianan quickly replied, well aware of Ruan Nianning’s loathing for her father, stepmother, and half-sister. “I just ran into Zou Xiaojing at a bar last night. It was a complete coincidence.”
“Stay away from those bars! The people there are shady, and you’re still recovering.” Ruan Nianning paused, swallowing the rest of her words. Her tone softened, the flames of anger in her heart subsiding. “Those places aren’t safe. Just stay home and play games or watch shows.”
“That won’t do. I’m working now,” Huo Jianan said with a hint of pride. “My position isn’t low at all. Sister Meng helped me put this outfit together. Do I look like a tyrannical CEO?”
Ruan Nianning gave her a thorough once-over. Jianan’s slender waist, delicate frame, and small face still exuded a delicate and vulnerable beauty, even when wrapped in a tailored, bold, and cold blue suit. “You may be a CEO, but you’re more of a soft and gentle one, not a tyrannical one.”
Huo Jianan: “…” I’m still an Alpha, you know!
Ruan Nianning noticed she was still wearing her hat, which looked soft and delicate but clashed with her sharply dressed professional attire. “Since we’re in the car, you can take off your hat.” She reached out to remove it.
Huo Jianan only managed to say “Don’t” and raise her hand to stop her, but the hat was already pulled off.
A prominent bruise on her forehead caught Ruan Nianning’s eye. “What happened to this?”
Feeling embarrassed, Huo Jianan covered her forehead with her hand. “It’s from Zou Xiaojing’s boyfriend. I was taking a breath outside the bar when he suddenly came out and hit me. Sister Meng and Wang Baobao saved me.”
Ruan Nianning’s nearly extinguished anger suddenly flared up again, burning hotter with each passing moment.
“He hit you? Why would he hit you? Huo Jianan, have you started lying to me?”
Ruan Nianning recalled the photograph of Zou Xiaojing’s overly affectionate and intimate pose with Huo Jianan, her anger growing with each memory. “What exactly did you do with Zou Xiaojing at the bar? Why else would her boyfriend hit you?”
Huo Jianan froze, realizing Ruan Nianning had completely misunderstood the situation. “Wife, please believe me! I only exchanged greetings with them and got dragged into a group photo. I was careful to avoid Zou Xiaojing the whole time. How could I have known her boyfriend would go berserk from drinking and attack me?”
Seeing Ruan Nianning’s icy expression, her face so cold it seemed frost could form on it, Huo Jianan panicked. Having no prior romantic experience, she had no idea how to comfort her girlfriend. Tentatively, she tugged at Ruan Nianning’s sleeve. “Wife, please don’t be angry. I swear I’m not lying.”
When Ruan Nianning remained silent, her face still rigid, Huo Jianan tried again, scrambling for excuses. “Her boyfriend might have been jealous. Seeing everyone fawning over me like I was the center of attention… it must have hurt his pride. The sudden contrast made him lose control.” This was the best explanation Huo Jianan could muster, wracking her brain for plausible excuses.
Ruan Nianning continued to ignore her.
Huo Jianan tugged at Ruan Nianning’s clothes again, looking at her with pleading eyes. “Wife, I’ve already told you everything. Please believe me, okay? Okay?”
She was petite and delicate to begin with, and now she looked like a kitten, her small hands clawing at the air.
Her large, expressive eyes, framed by thick lashes, were utterly adorable.
“Stop pulling! This is my costume. If you tear it, I’ll have nothing to wear.”
Seeing that her wife was finally willing to speak, Huo Jianan beamed and quickly began to flatter her. “Wife, you look stunning in this costume! It has that ancient elegance—those traditional styles are so particular about one’s temperament. You can’t just look pretty; you need genuine grace and depth to capture that ethereal fairy-like essence.”
Huo Jianan was quite pleased with her compliment, but Ruan Nianning rolled her eyes and scoffed, “I had no idea you were such a skilled flatterer. Do you say this to everyone?”
Huo Jianan froze. Why does it feel like my wife is even angrier now? And is she implying I’m a fickle playboy?
“No, no! I’ve only ever said this to you. I don’t know anyone else—just Grandmother, Sister Meng, Housekeeper Zhou, Xiaoman, Xiao Tao, and Wang Baobao. You know them all.”
“What about online?”
“There’s nothing about her online,” Huo Jianan said. “She only exists as an NPC in a game.”
Ruan Nianning snorted derisively, just as her assistant, Xiao Zhu, rushed over. “Sister Ning, Sister Ning, it’s time to start filming!”
Ruan Nianning got out of the car and glanced back at Huo Jianan. “Go back,” she said coolly. “Don’t interfere with my work.”
Huo Jianan obediently nodded. As Ruan Nianning walked away, she pressed her face against the car window and called out, “Wife, wait!”
Ruan Nianning paused and turned around. “What is it?”
Huo Jianan grinned widely. “Wife, I’m serious! You look stunning in that outfit! You’re absolutely gorgeous!”
“Stop flattering me!” Ruan Nianning retorted, her face stern. Yet her eyes twinkled, the icy frost that usually froze people in their tracks had vanished. She turned and strode briskly onto the set.
Film Empress Song noticed that after Ruan Nianning returned, the murderous fire in her eyes had subsided. Instead, a soft smile lingered at the corners of her lips, and she seemed genuinely content. She discreetly asked Xiao Zhu, “Who was that outside?”
Xiao Zhu chuckled. “Miss Huo came by and brought Sister Ning a huge bouquet of Diana Roses. You know what? Now that Sister Ning is married, she acts more like someone in a budding romance.”
Film Empress Song watched Ruan Nianning on the set, her gaze lingering thoughtfully. “You’re right,” she nodded.
This time, she nailed the take without a mistake. Behind the monitor, the director rubbed his hands excitedly.
After wrapping up, the director turned to Ruan Nianning. “Nianning, what suddenly clicked? Your performance on the last take was excellent. Here’s the deal: we’ve got night shoots for the next few days, so it’s going to be tough. But since we finished early today, I’m treating everyone to dinner tonight.”
The director had extended the invitation, so the main actors graciously accepted. Ruan Nianning, however, declined. The director didn’t press her, letting her do as she pleased.
Her phone showed two new messages, both from Huo Jianan:
– Wife, I’m back. Focus on your filming. Wang Baobao and I booked rooms at Lizhou Hotel. She said their luxury suites have relatively good accessibility features for the disabled.
– Wife, let me know when you’re done filming. We’re having dinner at R Restaurant tonight.
Ruan Nianning replied: [ – I’m done filming. I’ll be there after I freshen up. ]
After removing her makeup, Ruan Nianning left the set and drove straight to R Restaurant. The private room was empty except for Huo Jianan and Wang Baobao.
“Nianning, you’re here,” Huo Jianan said with a warm smile, her gaze gentle and comforting, like the soft, warm breeze of early summer. She had changed her outfit, now much more fitting for her hat.
Wang Baobao stood up to greet her warmly. “Sister-in-law, please, have a seat.”
Ruan Nianning had met Wang Baobao before. Once at the Huo family residence, where Huo Jianan formally introduced her boyfriend to her close friend, and again at their wedding.
Like Huo Jianan, Wang Baobao was a second-generation heir to a wealthy family. Uninterested in managing the family business, he spent his time playing games, indulging in good food, and was a die-hard fan of Song Shiyu.
Ruan Nianning explained, “We’re having an impromptu dinner today. The Director is treating everyone, and Sister Song is attending. Otherwise, I would have invited her to join us. If you’re interested, Baobao, I can take you to the set tomorrow for a visit. You might even get to meet your idol, get an autograph, and take photos.”
Wang Baobao had been disappointed that Song Shiyu couldn’t attend their gathering. Now hearing that he could join Ruan Nianning for a set visit and meet his idol, he was overjoyed. “Thank you, Sister-in-law! I’ll never forget this kindness!”
Huo Jianan’s teeth ached with jealousy. “You were complaining about being hungry earlier. Hurry up and eat.”
Wang Baobao retorted, “You’re the one who insisted on this sudden trip to City D! I skipped breakfast and lunch, only eating a bowl of noodles on the plane and drinking so much water I feel bloated.”
As the three of them ate, drank, and chatted, the conversation naturally turned to the incident at the bar the previous night.
Wang Baobao grinned widely. “Softie and I were boasting about our investments. She said she made over ten million yuan from a foreign project last year. I was about to ask more when my phone rang—it was Dada sending a distress call.”
“When we heard she’d been beaten up outside, we were instantly pumped! We abandoned the dance, the karaoke, and even the booze. Grabbing our beer bottles, we rushed out.”
“This was a real fight! We actually formed a team! What a rare chance to act as heroes! You know, Sister-in-law, this was way more thrilling than any game! We charged in and beat him up! A thorough thrashing! That guy was left curled up, clutching his head and rolling around like a fool. We avenged Dada and vented our anger!”
