- Chapter 29 - Getting Hit
That evening, Meng Xien didn’t return home for dinner, so Huo Jianan ate with Grandmother Huo.
“Where’s Sister Meng?”
“With her position, she naturally has a lot of social obligations. You can count on one hand the number of times she can make it home for a meal in a year.”
Huo Jianan suddenly realized that being in a high position came with its own hidden hardships, ones that weren’t easily shared with others.
After dinner, Huo Jianan went to the study, closed the door, and began researching while reviewing her notes from the day’s meeting. She had so much to learn.
Before long, Wang Baobao called. “Dada, I’m here, right outside your house. Don’t tell your family we’re going to a bar. Your grandmother would never let you go without five, six, seven, or eight bodyguards.”
Huo Jianan imagined eight burly men surrounding her in a protective circle. The mental image was absurdly funny.
“Got it, I won’t say a word. I’ll just tell them I’m going to your place to hang out.”
“Exactly! Hurry down. No, wait, take your time—don’t trip!”
This was Huo Jianan’s first time going to a bar. In her previous life, she’d been too busy with endless overtime to ever have the chance.
As soon as they entered, a band was performing on stage, their music filling the air as the crowd below swayed and danced along. It was loud—truly deafening—and frenzied—a restless energy that made everyone want to spend money, pick up girls, and stir up trouble.
The club was dimly lit, with occasional flashes of light illuminating shifting shadows.
Wang Baobao carefully guided Huo Jianan through the crowd.
Someone in the crowd spotted Huo Jianan. “Hey! The cripple’s at the bar! Hah! All dressed in designer brands! A rich cripple!”
“She’s pretty though, soft and delicate. I wouldn’t mind if she was a cripple!”
Someone reached out to touch Huo Jianan’s face, but she recoiled in disgust.
“Ooh, she’s still a virgin? Even better!”
Wang Baobao slapped the man’s hand away. “Get lost if you’re drunk! Don’t touch her! She’s an Alpha!”
The man didn’t get angry, just stared lewdly at Huo Jianan. “An Alpha? Even better!”
The crowd erupted in laughter. “Will she mark an Omega? More like an Omega will mark her, ha ha ha!”
At that moment, several men approached and, without a word, dragged the lecherous ones aside, clearing a path. “My apologies, Miss Wang. This way, please!”
Wang Baobao pushed Huo Jianan toward the private room in the VIP area.
Only then did the others startle, dumbfounded. “It’s a VIP!”
The spending in the VIP area was astonishing—nights with expenses in the millions weren’t unheard of. Only true big shots, the ultra-rich and powerful, could enter this exclusive zone!
The other guests had already arrived. Beautiful women sat beside Softie and Zhenzhen. Huito and her girlfriend White Rabbit held strawberries, feeding each other sweetly before kissing passionately, oblivious to their surroundings. The scene made Huo Jianan feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Zhenzhen’s eyes lit up when she saw them. “You’re here! Baobao, Dada, you’re finally here! We’ve been waiting for you!” The perceptive beauty beside her promptly poured drinks for the newcomers.
Wang Baobao raised his glass. “Happy birthday, Zhenzhen!” He downed the drink in one gulp.
Seeing him do it, Huo Jianan had no choice but to follow suit. “Happy birthday, Zhenzhen! May you celebrate this day for many years to come!”
Zhenzhen burst out laughing. “Dada, when did you get so… scholarly?”
Softie chimed in, “Dada, your game skills might be rusty, but your lines are smooth.”
Huo Jianan: “Stop teasing me. Today is Young Miss Zhenzhen’s birthday! Let’s all raise our glasses and wish her prosperity!”
Zhenzhen laughed heartily. “Hahaha! I love it! Dada, I love the way you are now! Come on, let’s all prosper together!”
Huo Jianan’s alcohol tolerance was average, and the original host’s likely hadn’t been much better. After a few drinks, her face flushed crimson.
Inside the private room, they drank, laughed, and were joined by several pretty women who danced to liven the mood. The cacophony of laughter and chatter grew louder, the atmosphere thickening with an intoxicating, decadent air.
Huo Jianan’s head began to ache. She wasn’t accustomed to such a noisy environment, the clamor making her head buzz. “Baobao, I’m going out for some fresh air.”
Wang Baobao, also tipsy, was boasting loudly and downing drink after drink. “Be careful. Don’t fall.”
“I know.”
Zhenzhen handed her a VIP card. “When you go out, turn right. There’s a small door—it’s very convenient. Just swipe the card to enter and exit.”
Huo Jianan took the card and left. As she passed other private rooms, one door opened, and someone inside glanced out, catching sight of Huo Jianan passing by.
“Miss Huo!” A figure rushed out excitedly.
Huo Jianan paused her wheelchair, startled. Turning around, she saw a young woman dressed in bold, wild attire, her eyes wide with surprise and delight.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Jingjing, Zou Xiaojing! We met the day you and Ruan attended my sister’s wedding!”
Huo Jianan remembered. She was Ruan Nianning’s half-sister. “Oh, it’s you! Hello! Are you here to have some fun too?”
“Yeah! A friend invited me and my friends here today. It’s my first time here! It’s amazing!” Zou Xiaojing’s excited voice dripped with envy.
Huo Jianan smiled politely. “Enjoy yourselves. I’m going out for some fresh air.”
Just then, a voice called from inside, “Xiao Jing, what are you doing? Who are you talking to?”
Zou Xiaojing pushed the half-closed door wide open and announced proudly, “This is Miss Huo from the Changbin Huo Family! My sister’s wife!”
For a moment, silence fell inside. Then the room erupted in enthusiasm. “Wow! Xiao Jing, when did you get such a connection in your family? You never told us!”
The hostess rose enthusiastically to greet her. “Miss Huo, I had no idea you were related to Xiaojing! Since you’re here, why not join us for a drink?”
Huo Jianan was about to decline when Zou Xiaojing rushed over to push her wheelchair inside. “Yes, Miss Huo, please join us and enjoy a drink with everyone!”
The hostess grew even more delighted, her hands trembling with excitement as she poured the drinks. Who in Changbin wouldn’t want to connect with a top-tier family like the Huos?
“Miss Huo, please drink as much as you like.”
The hostess downed her drink first, followed by everyone else except Zou Xiaojing’s boyfriend, who scowled reluctantly. His girlfriend was practically clinging to Miss Huo, beaming radiantly. Moreover, these were supposed to be his friends, yet they had all swarmed around Miss Huo, vying for her attention.
Unable to refuse, Huo Jianan took a small sip. “Thank you, thank you. I have to go now—my friend is waiting for me.”
“Of course, of course,” Miss Huo said. The hostess tactfully didn’t press her to stay. “My surname is Zeng. I’m in tourism development. I’d love to have another drink with you, Miss Huo, when we have the chance.”
Huo Jianan nodded and was about to leave when Zou Xiaojing suggested, “Since we’re all in such a good mood today, why don’t we take a group photo?”
The suggestion was met with unanimous approval. Huo Jianan found herself squeezed into the crowd, forcibly pushed into the center of the photo. Zou Xiaojing practically pressed half her face against Huo Jianan’s shoulder, forcing Jianan to shift sideways to create some distance.
Click! The photo was captured.
“Have fun, everyone. I’ll be taking my leave now.” Huo Jianan maneuvered her wheelchair out on her own. Seeing this, Zou Xiaojing moved to push it for her. “Miss Huo, where are you going? Let me take you there!”
“No need,” Huo Jianan replied, unable to bear Zou Xiaojing’s overbearing behavior. She wished Wang Baobao were there to intervene.
Fortunately, even without Baobao, someone finally stepped in to stop Zou Xiaojing.
Zou Xiaojing’s boyfriend, unable to tolerate his girlfriend’s persistent clinginess, finally snapped. He grabbed her arm. “What are you doing? I’m right here! Are you openly flirting with her?”
Zou Xiaojing bristled. “What’s with the drunken jealousy? Her legs are paralyzed—what’s wrong with helping her get home?”
Huo Jianan finally managed to escape Zou Xiaojing’s persistent pestering and seized the opportunity to quickly leave.
Behind her, the sound of their argument grew louder with each exchange:
“You’re taking her? Where? More like you just want to take her to bed!”
“Psycho! If you can’t handle your drink, don’t drink! What’s with this drunken rant?”
“Don’t think I don’t see through you. You’re just after her money, trying to latch onto a rich man.”
“So what if I want to marry a wealthy man? Why don’t you take a good look at yourself…”
Huo Jianan shook her head at the sound of their bickering. She finally spotted a small door to her right. She swiped her VIP card to open it and exited.
Beyond the door was a parking lot. Near the entrance, a man who looked like a bar staff member leaned against the wall, talking on his phone and occasionally bursting into fits of laughter. When he saw Huo Jianan emerge—likely because she was in a wheelchair—he stared at her for a moment before resuming his conversation.
Huo Jianan finally caught her breath. She looked up at the night sky, surprised to see a dozen or so stars scattered across the dark canopy. It seemed the environment in this world was significantly better than in her own.
By late November, Changbin had grown quite cold, the night air carrying a biting chill.
Huo Jianan stepped out without her coat, and the cold soon seeped into her bones. She turned her wheelchair around to head back inside. Suddenly, the door beeped open, and a man burst out, reeking of alcohol. He spotted Huo Jianan and lunged forward, throwing a punch.
She recognized him: the man from the private room, Zou Xiaojing’s boyfriend.
“What are you doing?” Huo Jianan ducked her head just in time to avoid a punch aimed at her face. The second landed squarely on her chest. Trapped in her wheelchair, she could barely move, and within moments, she had taken three, four punches.
“You Huo bitch! You fucking seduced my girlfriend! I’m gonna kill you today!”
Huo Jianan’s legs were paralyzed. For now, all she could do was sit and endure the blows. Shielding her head with her arms, she fumbled for her phone, desperately trying to call Wang Baobao.
“You think you’re so fucking special now that you’ve got money? Huh?!”
Another punch landed.
The staff member who witnessed the scene seemed accustomed to such occurrences. He turned around languidly and resumed his phone call.
“What are you doing? Hitting a disabled person!” A clear, female voice suddenly rang out as a girl sprinted over from the parking lot. “Sir, if you don’t stop, I’ll call the police!”
“Who the hell are you? I’m warning you not to get involved! Or I’ll beat you too!”
The girl was small and slender, wearing short boots and a thin down jacket. Her long hair obscured her features, but she wasn’t intimidated. She pulled out her phone and dialed. “Hello, 110? This is the parking lot of the Bense Bar on XX Road. Someone’s beating a disabled person here!”
“You bitch!” While the man, enraged, lunged toward the girl, Huo Jianan, with her nearly broken arm, fumbled for her tightly clutched phone. Finally, she managed to call Wang Baobao. “Come save me! I’m outside! Someone’s beating me!”
Just then, the door beeped again. As the man’s hand swung toward the girl’s face, a figure burst out, darted forward, and kicked the man in the back. He stumbled forward and collapsed to the ground.
The two quickly clashed. The woman, though slender, moved with agile strength and skill. Huo Jianan glanced at her, secretly admiring her martial prowess: A female hero!
When she focused her gaze, she froze in shock. Holy crap! That’s Sister Meng!
“Dada! Dada!” The door swung open again as Wang Baobao, Huito, Zhenzhen, and Softie burst out of the bar.
“Holy shit! You really got beaten up! Damn it! Messing with you is messing with us!”
Huo Jianan pointed at the man, who was utterly helpless under Meng Xien’s onslaught. “It’s him! He came out and attacked me!”
Huito charged forward first, while Softie smashed the beer bottle in her hand down on the man’s head.
“You Beta! How dare you hit our people!”
“Hit a woman! You think you’re so tough?”
The man was soon pinned to the ground, curled up and clutching his head as the four pelted him with punches and kicks.
Wang Baobao turned to see Meng Xien, shivering in fear. “S-Sister Meng…”
Meng Xien’s face was dark with anger. “Didn’t you know Jianan’s situation? How could you bring her to a place like this?”
Wang Baobao kept his head lowered, too afraid to make a sound.
Meng Xien turned to face Huo Jianan. Huo Jianan quickly lowered her head, looking as timid as a chick.
“I’ll take you to the hospital,” Meng Xien said, pushing Huo Jianan’s wheelchair, her voice strained with barely suppressed anger, almost gritting her teeth.
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment, then suddenly said, “Wait. We haven’t thanked that girl yet. Thanks to her brave actions, I was able to contact Baobao.”
Whether it was Huo Jianan’s imagination or not, she felt Meng Xien visibly hesitate for a moment.
The girl, not waiting for them to approach, spoke first, “Young Miss, since your friend is here, I… I’ll be going now.” Her voice trembled, whether from the cold or fright, it was hard to tell.
Seeing her about to leave, Huo Jianan hurriedly said, “Please leave your phone number. I want to thank you properly another day!”
“No, no need. My friend is waiting for me.”
“Then thank you! I’m truly grateful!”
The girl practically fled, her short boots clicking against the ground. The urgency in her departure was palpable.
Huo Jianan: “……”
Turning her head, she caught Meng Xien staring unblinkingly at the girl’s retreating figure, her lips pressed into a thin line.
At the hospital, a doctor conducted a thorough physical examination on Huo Jianan. After she came down from the CT scanner, Meng Xien carefully helped her sit back in her wheelchair.
The examination revealed no major issues, just a mild concussion that would heal with two days of rest. The only alarming thing was the large bruise on her forehead.
“Sister Meng, don’t tell Grandmother,” Huo Jianan pleaded.
Meng Xien pressed hard on the bruise, making Huo Jianan wince in pain. “Ow! Ow! Ow!”
“Feeling the pain now? With a bruise that big on your head, how do you expect to hide it? Grandmother isn’t blind.”
“What should we do?”
Meng Xien rubbed some ointment on her hands and gently applied it to Huo Jianan’s head to help disperse the bruise and promote blood circulation.
“Don’t you realize you’re Aunt Xu’s only granddaughter and the Huo family’s only heir? If something happened to you, how would Aunt Xu bear it? She’s already 75 years old.”
Huo Jianan fell silent, remaining still as Meng Xien continued to apply the ointment.
Meng Xien glanced at her. “Why were you at a bar? How did you get into a fight?”
“It was Zhenzhen’s birthday, and everyone was celebrating at the bar. Later, I ran into Nianning’s step-sister, and that guy—her boyfriend, I think—came out of nowhere and hit me. He accused me of seducing his girlfriend! It’s ridiculous! Zou Xiaojing and I have only met twice: once during Nianning’s homecoming visit, and tonight at the bar.”
Meng Xien frowned. “Be careful around the Zou family. They’re known for their unreasonable and aggressive behavior.”
Huo Jianan sensed there was more to the story. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“It’s nothing,” Meng Xien replied, her voice calm. She let out a long sigh. “This is just a lesson for you. Don’t go to places like that again, and if you do, make sure you’re never alone.”
Seeing that Meng Xien wasn’t going to elaborate, Huo Jianan didn’t press further. Suddenly, she remembered something. “Sister Meng, why were you at the bar tonight too?”
“To meet an important business contact,” Meng Xien admitted. “In the business world, some connections are crucial, and social obligations are inevitable. You’ll understand once you take over the Huo Corporation.”
“Alright, let’s go home. Tomorrow morning, don’t come down for breakfast with us. Wait a little while before coming down. Stay late at the company tonight and come home later to avoid Grandmother. By the dinner after tomorrow, your bruises should have faded significantly.”
Seeing how thoroughly Sister Meng had planned for her, Huo Jianan felt relieved. “Thank you, Sister Meng! I feel much better now.”
The next day, Huo Jianan deliberately followed Meng Xien’s advice and woke up late. Her grandmother and Sister Meng had already left for the company, perfectly avoiding a shared breakfast.
Just as she got up, washed up, changed her clothes, and put on her hat, preparing to leave, she deliberately pulled the hat down to cover the bruise on her head. At that moment, she suddenly received a call from Ruan Nianning.
“Where are you?” Ruan Nianning demanded.
“I’m at home. I woke up a bit late today and am just getting ready to go to the company.”
“Where did you go last night?”
Her tone was harsh, completely devoid of her usual gentleness. Strangely, Huo Jianan felt this was the real Ruan Nianning, unmasked and unpretending.
“I went to a bar. Don’t get the wrong idea, Wife. It was just Zhenzhen’s birthday from our gaming team. Wang Baobao and I went to celebrate for her at the bar.”
Ruan Nianning scoffed. “Did you not invite anyone else to the celebration?”
“No, just us. Oh, we did hire some dancers, but it was just dancing—nothing else.” Huo Jianan admitted truthfully, omitting the incident with Zou Xiaojing and the beating.
As she spoke, she guiltily tugged at her hat. An Alpha being beaten by a Beta was hardly something to be proud of.
“What’s going on here?”
Ruan Nianning suddenly picked up another phone. The screen displayed a photo—her group selfie from last night at the bar with Zou Xiaojing and the others.
Huo Jianan froze, utterly surprised to see this picture.
“Who were you really with last night? Is this what you meant by celebrating Wang Baobao’s birthday? Huo Jianan, why did you lie to me? I hate it when people deceive me!”
Huo Jianan was taken aback. “No, I didn’t lie. I really was celebrating Baobao’s birthday with Wang Baobao and the others.”
Seeing Ruan Nianning’s expression grow increasingly stormy, the hatred in her eyes intensifying, Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. “Wife, don’t be angry. I really didn’t lie…”
Just then, a voice came from the other end of the line: “Sister Ning, Sister Ning! The director’s calling for you, Sister Ning!”
Ruan Nianning’s face turned frosty. Without listening to any further explanation, she slammed down the phone.
Oh no, my wife is furious! She’s really upset!
Huo Jianan felt a pang of panic. When she reached the company, she called twice, but there was no answer. Assuming Ruan Nianning was filming, she refrained from calling again to avoid disrupting her work.
She turned on her computer, but couldn’t focus on anything. Her mind was consumed by Ruan Nianning’s icy glare, filled with anger and disappointment.
I wondered if she would be able to shoot her scenes smoothly today, given how angry she was.
Noticing her distracted state, Ying couldn’t help but ask, “President Huo, is something wrong?”
“It’s nothing. Actually, Ying, let’s just chat casually. If your boyfriend upset you, what would you want him to do?”
“It depends on what happened. If it’s cheating, that’s off the table.”
“It’s not that serious. You just have a misunderstanding, and you feel he’s lied to you.”
“Then he should just explain clearly! I hate it when people keep things from me and won’t explain.” Ying pondered for a moment, her face glowing with daydreams. “Of course, if he sent me a bouquet of flowers, waited for me after work, and apologized properly, I’d love that even more.”
Without another word, Huo Jianan wheeled her chair to find Meng Xien, who was in a meeting with a subordinate.
Huo Jianan knocked on the door. Meng Xien got up to open it. “What is it, Jianan? President Huo?”
Huo Jianan thickened her skin. “CEO Meng, I’m here to request time off. I need to fly to City D in Province Y immediately. It’s urgent. Could you also inform Chairwoman Xu?”
Meng Xien: “……”
Going to Province Y… She was going to see Ruan Nianning. It had only been a few days since they last saw each other, and he was already chasing after his wife.
Huo Jianan had only taken a few steps when she turned her wheelchair back around. “Sister Meng, what kind of flowers should I get for Nianning?”
Meng Xien paused. “Isn’t her favorite the Diana Rose?”
“Right. Then I’ll get Diana Roses.” Having gotten the information she needed, Huo Jianan left cheerfully.
Meng Xien: “……”
My younger sister is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
“Don’t go alone. I’ll have Xiaoman keep you company.”
“No need. I’ll ask Baobao to come with me.”
After leaving Huo Corporation, Huo Jianan first called Housekeeper He to book the earliest flight to City D in Province Y, then called Wang Baobao.
Wang Baobao was still asleep, his voice groggy. “Hello, Dada? What’s up? It’s not time yet. I’ll pick you up when it is.”
“I’m going to City D today to visit the filming location. Are you coming? Hurry up and get ready!”
Wang Baobao instantly woke up, sitting bolt upright. “You’re serious?”
“Of course! I’ve already booked my ticket.”
“Holy shit! You’re telling me this now?!”
“I just decided! Are you coming? We’ll meet at L Airport.”
“Coming! L Airport. See you there!”
Two hours later, Huo Jianan, dressed in professional attire, and Wang Baobao, with his hair still messy, appeared in the first-class cabin of the plane.
