- Chapter 28 - President Huo and CEO Meng
Today was Huo Jianan’s first day at work. She was dressed in a professional outfit borrowed from Meng Xien, who had personally helped her get ready. The clothes, though slightly loose and with sleeves that were a bit too long, fit her slender frame well.
“I’ll have someone deliver a few sets over tonight,” Meng Xien said.
Huo Jianan smiled brightly. “Thank you, Sister Meng.” In the mirror, she looked spirited and confident, her clear, bright eyes shining with vitality.
Meng Xien wondered if she was imagining things. It seemed that after her marriage, Huo Jianan had become even more cheerful and radiant, her laughter more frequent, her complexion brighter, and even her eyes seemed to sparkle with newfound light.
Could this be the magic of marrying someone you love? A complete transformation, a rebirth.
Suddenly, Meng Xien recalled someone else with bright, gem-like eyes, who used to look at her with a quiet, bashful smile.
But later, those eyes disappeared, and that smile vanished.
When Meng Xien wheeled Huo Jianan into the headquarters of Huo Corporation, the entire company was stunned.
“Heavens! The Young Miss is here! The real Young Miss Huo!”
“So the Young Miss is disabled!”
“Just as beautiful as she was at the wedding!”
“Even more stunning in person!”
“Rich and beautiful—Ruan Nianning truly lives up to her reputation!”
“So delicate and fragile! I adore this type of gentle beauty!”
“Look at her smile—so adorable! Nothing like the disabled people I’ve seen elsewhere.”
“She’s the Young Miss of the Huo Family! The chosen heir!”
Meng Xien gathered her direct subordinates in the large conference room to formally introduce Huo Jianan. “This is Miss Huo Jianan. Starting today, she will officially join Huo Corporation and participate in all decision-making processes.”
The crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause, likely spurred by someone’s lead. “Welcome, Miss Huo!”
Huo Jianan, who had spent three years as a corporate drone, found herself for the first time surrounded by impeccably dressed vice presidents. Her status had completely flipped.
This feeling… was absolutely fantastic!
“Jianan, this will be your office from now on.” Meng Xien wheeled Huo Jianan inside. Located on the 50th floor of the same building as Meng Xien’s office, Huo Jianan’s was situated on the east side, while Meng Xien’s was on the west.
“Do you like it?”
“I love it,” Huo Jianan replied. The office was spacious and bright, with a stunning view—a far cry from the cramped cubicle she’d worked in during her previous life.
Meng Xien smiled at her. “Aunt Xu and I were worried you might feel nervous meeting so many people for the first time, but it seems we needn’t have fretted.” She had genuinely been concerned that Huo Jianan might be intimidated, but Jianan had handled herself with poise and grace, maintaining a friendly yet professional distance appropriate between a boss and her subordinates.
“Well, Sister Meng was here to support me,” Huo Jianan replied. She wasn’t a newcomer to the workplace, having honed her skills through three years of “colorful” professional experience. A former director who had recognized her talent once praised her for her exceptional abilities and astonishing progress.
“By the way, where is Grandmother?”
“Aunt Xu isn’t in this building; she’s in the adjacent one. She doesn’t like being too high up, saying she needs to stay grounded.”
Meng Xien patted Huo Jianan’s shoulder. “If you need anything, feel free to call, email, or have your assistant reach out to me. I’ve already notified HR to recruit an assistant for you; they should be in place within two weeks.”
“Thank you, Sister Meng—no, CEO Meng.”
“On your first day, take some time to familiarize yourself with the office. My assistant, Ying, will assist you for the next few days.” Meng Xien glanced at her wristwatch. “We’re having a casual lunch with Aunt Xu at noon. I’ll come get you then.”
“Thank you, CEO Meng. By the way, I need to leave the office this afternoon. I’m requesting time off.”
Meng Xien crossed her arms and looked at her. “Requesting time off on your first day?”
Huo Jianan didn’t mention that she had already contacted Doctor Jiang earlier that morning to reschedule her rehabilitation sessions for the afternoon. “I can’t sit still all day. I can only work half a day.”
Meng Xien sighed in resignation. “Fine, arrange your schedule as you see fit. I’ll notify you in advance if there’s an important meeting.”
As soon as Meng Xien left, Huo Jianan began wandering around her spacious office. It featured a comfortable lounge area and even an accessible restroom, clearly custom-designed with her disability in mind.
Huo Jianan had barely returned to her desk and turned on her computer when someone knocked and entered.
“Hello, President Huo. CEO Meng temporarily reassigned me to assist you. I’ll serve as your temporary assistant until your permanent assistant arrives.”
“Good timing. Start by giving me an overview of the Huo Corporation’s organizational structure.”
“Right away, President Huo.”
Ying worked efficiently, answering every question. But the corporation’s operations were vast. By the time she understood the major divisions, their respective leaders, the divisions’ functions, and approximate headcounts, it was already noon.
Meng Xien approached her with a smile. “How’s your first day going, President Huo?”
Huo Jianan rubbed her forehead. “My brain feels like it’s about to explode. Being an emperor really isn’t easy.”
Meng Xien laughed heartily. “Come on, let’s go have lunch with Chairwoman Xu.”
Xu Weiyi’s office had a traditional Chinese style, located on the second floor. From the window, one could see the garden below, complete with a small bridge, flowing water, pavilions, and rock formations—a miniature classical garden.
The dining area was on the first floor, adjacent to the garden. The meals were prepared in a private kitchen—light and simple, usually three dishes and a soup. Today, to accommodate Huo Jianan and Meng Xien, two meat dishes were specially added.
Jianan, let’s enjoy Aunt Xu’s cooking today. Starting tomorrow, we’ll eat at the company cafeteria whenever we’re at the office.”
“Sounds good. The cafeteria isn’t bad. We’re well-paid, so we can choose the best options.”
Meng Xien chuckled. “Are you trying to draw attention from all the employees?”
“Exactly! I need to tell them that if they work hard, they’ll get raises. Raises mean more money, and more money means better food.”
Meng Xien and Grandmother Huo both stared in amazement.
Grandmother Huo remarked, “Young people’s ideas really change with the times.”
Wang Baobao expressed his confusion about Huo Jianan’s decision to officially join the Huo Corporation. “You’re turning down a comfortable life to come suffer? What can I say? You’re ambitious, I guess.”
But he kept his word, driving Huo Jianan to the hospital for rehabilitation, staying by her side throughout the sessions, carefully supporting her. During breaks, he considerately offered her water and towels. In his own words, “I’ve never waited on my own parents this attentively.”
As a good friend, there was nothing to criticize. Except… whenever he had a moment, he would eagerly pester Doctor Jiang with endless questions.
While Doctor Jiang was out of the room, Huo Jianan tried to persuade him, “Baobao, stop coming to my rehabilitation sessions. I’m afraid you’ll get more and more entangled with Doctor Jiang. He already has a girlfriend and is planning to marry her in two years. Your infatuation…”
Huo Jianan wanted to add, “I’m afraid it won’t lead to anything,” but seeing Wang Baobao’s dejected expression, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
“I understand the situation. I won’t do anything rash. Just let’s be ordinary friends, okay?”
Huo Jianan nodded.
“Here’s your towel. I washed it. By the way, your towel was pretty clean, like it had been sun-dried. It didn’t smell of pheromones, which is good. I was worried your pheromones might affect Doctor Jiang.”
Huo Jianan was startled, remembering that the original body’s pheromones were supposed to smell like absinthe. She feared Wang Baobao might notice something amiss.
Fortunately, Wang Baobao hadn’t thought much of it. “Right. I remember your estrus period isn’t for another half month or so. Since your wife isn’t around right now, you probably won’t be in heat anytime soon.”
Are Alphas in the ABO world this blunt? Huo Jianan thought, feeling flustered by his frankness. “I’m not in heat!”
“I haven’t reached my estrus period yet. Mine’s half a month later than yours. Oh, right! Didn’t you say you were planning to visit the filming set in a few days? When are you going? How about this weekend? Doctor Jiang isn’t on duty then.”
Huo Jianan sighed. So he wants me to take advantage of the opportunity while Doctor Jiang is away?
“It’s only been a few days! I just started working. I can’t possibly fly to City D for a set visit after just two days on the job!”
“Fine. We’ll go to a bar tomorrow night instead. Softie’s birthday, and everyone’s decided to celebrate at that place. You’re coming too! It’s settled—9 PM tomorrow, and I’ll pick you up at your place.”
Huo Jianan reluctantly agreed. “Okay.”
Just as she arrived home, Huo Jianan received a video call request from Ruan Nianning.
Wow! Wolfie is calling me!
Huo Jianan suddenly felt overjoyed, her heart racing even before she realized it. She hastily smoothed her hair and swiped to answer.
On the screen, Ruan Nianning appeared in a graceful, flowing red traditional costume, her high ponytail adorned with metallic gold accessories, exuding both heroic spirit and regal elegance.
“Darling, why are you calling me at this time?”
“There was an issue with the props on set today, so we might be wrapping up late. I just wanted to call you while I had a moment.” Ruan Nianning glanced at Huo Jianan’s professional attire and a thought struck her. “Did you start work already?”
“Yeah, my first day! You wanted me to help manage the Huo family enterprises, right? How do I look? Sister Meng lent me this outfit. Did you know my office is huge? I’ve already gotten a rough idea of the group’s operations…” Huo Jianan continued enthusiastically, her words tumbling out in a torrent.
Watching the screen, Ruan Nianning saw Huo Jianan’s radiant face, brimming with excitement and vitality, her smile radiant. Her heart brightened momentarily, but quickly grew complicated.
Huo Jianan belatedly realized Wolfie hadn’t spoken in a while. “Huh? Wife, why aren’t you saying anything? Is something wrong?”
“No, I’m not feeling unwell. I’m probably just tired from filming the night scene last night.”
“Then make sure you rest well tonight and eat plenty to regain your strength.”
Ruan Nianning’s lips curved slightly, but no smile emerged. She lowered her gaze, avoiding his concerned look.
Huo Jianan had already begun to take control of the Huo Corporation, following her own plan.
She should be overjoyed, showering her with sweet words.
“I’ve got to go—filming starts soon. Work hard at the company and keep up the good work!”
“Will do!” Encouraged by her wife’s words, Huo Jianan flashed a bright smile. “I wish you all a speedy wrap-up too!”
The next day, Huo Jianan arrived at the company brimming with renewed vigor.
In her previous life of 25 years, she had been just another overworked employee. Just as she was finally on the verge of being promoted to manager, her short-lived existence came to an abrupt end, leaving her little chance to participate in high-level management meetings.
Now, on her second day at work, she found herself attending a CEO-level meeting chaired by Meng Xien, discussing major topics like investment strategies and merger targets.
Huo Jianan perked up, listening intently and taking detailed notes. Her intense focus made the other executives squirm uneasily, prompting them to vie even more fiercely for attention and opportunities to contribute.
The morning passed in a blur of meetings. Though Huo Jianan didn’t understand many of the technical terms, Meng Xien patiently explained them to her.
For lunch, Meng Xien took her to the employee cafeteria, as promised.
Huo Jianan ordered a spicy hot pot. As she listed her ingredients, Meng Xien collected the items: “Bean skin, lotus root slices, bamboo shoots… Oh, and lunch meat too. And pork tenderloin—quail eggs are my favorite.”
“Wait, aren’t your favorites sweet and sour ribs? When did it become quail eggs?”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. Had she slipped up?
“Nianning likes them. I tried them a few times with her and grew to like them too.”
Meng Xien nodded and ladled a heaping bowl for her, while she herself ordered a light Chinese meal.
As they ate at a shared table, employees occasionally glanced their way. Huo Jianan faintly heard their whispers:
“That’s President Huo, Chairwoman Xu’s granddaughter. She just started working here.”
“Who’s prettier, President Huo or CEO Meng?”
“I prefer CEO Meng—she’s the epitome of a mature, confident woman!”
“President Huo is nice too! A gentle Alpha is so rare! Look at how cute she looks wiping her mouth—I want to tease her!”
Huo Jianan froze mid-wipe, startled by the overheard conversation.
Meng Xien glanced at the oily mess in Huo Jianan’s bowl and frowned. “This stuff is too greasy and unhealthy. You should eat less of it.”
“I know. Why are you acting just like Grandmother?” Huo Jianan replied, her face smeared with grease. “I only eat this here because I can’t get it at home.”
Meng Xien shook her head. “I remember you used to call this ‘dark cuisine’ and refused to eat it.”
Huo Jianan shivered inwardly. “Just because I didn’t eat it before doesn’t mean I won’t in the future. Past actions don’t dictate future behavior.”
Meng Xien paused mid-chew. After a moment, she said, “You’re right. What I did before doesn’t mean I’ll do the same in the future.”
“Sister Meng, I’m taking the afternoon off again today. Wang Baobao will pick me up.”
“Another day off? I saw Wang Baobao pick you up yesterday. What’s going on with you two? You’re acting so mysterious.”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Meng Xien set down her chopsticks, wiped the corner of her mouth with a tissue, and sat up straight. “Jianan, now that you’re working at the company, you need to focus and do your job properly. It’s time to cut back on gaming and start showing some real results. That way, Aunt Xu can truly rest assured.”
Huo Jianan was taken aback, surprised that Meng Xien would say such things to her. It seemed Meng Xien genuinely wanted her to learn how to manage the Huo family’s enterprises. But if she truly cared about Jianan and her grandmother, why would she collude with Ruan Nianning to usurp the Huo family’s assets?
Huo Jianan felt she was increasingly unable to understand Meng Xien.
“I understand,” Jianan said. “I’ll gradually focus my mind. It might take a few months to transition.”
She heard Meng Xien sigh helplessly. It was obvious that her inconsistent behavior—like a fisherman who only worked three days a week—made her seem like a hopeless case in Meng Xien’s eyes.
“Eat this.” A peeled banana was offered to her. Huo Jianan looked up and met Meng Xien’s indulgent gaze. “Look at how red your face is from all that spicy food.”
Huo Jianan grinned widely. “Thanks, Sister Meng!” She took the peeled banana and bit into it.
Meng Xien, Meng Xien… Do you truly mean well for me and the Huo family, or not?
Author’s Note: Meng Xien, one of the two masterminds plotting against the Huo family, plays a significant role in this story. She even has her own romantic pairing!
