- Transmigrated as the Disabled Alpha Wife of the Black Moonlight and She Said She Loves Me
- Chapter 27 - I'll Protect You and the Huo Family
That evening, Grandmother Huo and Meng Xien returned home together. The three of them enjoyed a warm and harmonious meal at the dinner table.
Meng Xien was surprised to see Huo Jianan’s appetite had improved significantly. “Jianan isn’t being so picky anymore. Her appetite has really improved.”
Grandmother Huo smiled warmly. “She’s changed a lot. Maybe her time in the hospital made her less picky.”
A fragrant roasted chicken, garnished with lemon slices and herbs, sat on the table. Grandmother Huo picked up a drumstick and placed it on Meng Xien’s plate, then another for Huo Jianan. “Go on, one each.”
Meng Xien returned the drumstick to Grandmother Huo. “Aunt Xu, please have it.”
“I’m getting on in years and can’t eat much anymore. You two should eat more while you’re young.”
Huo Jianan watched silently. She had to admit, Grandmother was truly kind to Meng Xien, practically treating her like another granddaughter.
In the original story, after the Huo family’s downfall, Ruan Nianning regretted her actions. But what about Meng Xien? Her goal was to seize the Huo family’s assets. Would she achieve her goal? And if she did, would she regret it too?
It’s a pity I transmigrated too early, before Meng Xien’s story arc was released.
“Sister Meng, just eat up. You got back so late last night from your flight, and you’ve been at work all day today. You need to take care of yourself.”
Grandmother Huo watched their harmonious interaction with satisfaction.
“Xien, Jianan is married now. You should start considering your personal life too.”
Out of nowhere, the parental matchmaking pressure struck!
Huo Jianan secretly rejoiced. Finally, I’m not the one being nagged about marriage! Hahaha…
In her excitement, she nearly spat out her mouthful of rice.
Meng Xien, usually composed and unruffled, stiffened momentarily. “I know,” she replied curtly.
Grandmother Huo pressed on. “You’ve been saying ‘I know’ for years, but you still haven’t brought home a girlfriend.”
Meng Xien lowered her head and resumed eating, remaining silent.
“I heard Sun Yi, the Omega heiress from Sunfeng Group, has her eye on you. She’s quite good-looking and well-mannered, and you’ve worked together before, right?”
Aunt Xu chimed in, “We were discussing business, purely professional. Nothing more.”
“I’ve noticed there are single Omegas at the company who are both good-natured and attractive. If you’re too shy, next time I’ll arrange for you to go on a business trip together. You’re an Alpha—take the initiative when you should, and be considerate. Wouldn’t things just fall into place naturally then?”
Huo Jianan couldn’t suppress her smile, her body trembling slightly.
“What’s so funny?” Grandmother Huo’s gaze sharpened as she glared at Huo Jianan. “Where’s your wife? She’s barely been home a few days before running off to film again. The Huo family doesn’t need her measly acting fees. Let me tell you, you and your wife have two years of couple’s time at most. By the third year, I expect to see her pregnant.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Grandmother Huo was used to getting her way, acting as the family’s autocratic matriarch.
Meng Xien shot Huo Jianan a grateful look, his eyes saying, Thanks for taking the heat.
Huo Jianan forced a smile. “Grandmother, why are you bringing this up again? We just got married! Of course we’ll have children eventually—ha ha! Grandmother, please eat your fish while it’s hot—it’ll get cold and tough if you wait.”
Grandmother Huo sighed. “The two of you… not one of you brings me any peace.”
After Wang Baobao left, Huo Jianan practiced the game for hours, until her eyes ached from playing until just before dinner. Only then did her gameplay improve.
Meng Xien sat casually on the sofa, wearing only a shirt with its sleeves rolled up and the top two buttons undone. He picked up the controller with natural ease.
Compared to the meticulous, ascetic CEO he was at the office, the current Meng Xien appeared much more relaxed.
Noticing the desk and chair nearby, complete with a computer and notepad, Meng Xien couldn’t help but glance at them. “Why did you set all this up here?”
“This was originally a study. Sometimes when I get tired of gaming, I like to surf the web and relax.”
Meng Xien nodded. “True. Switching between different activities and letting your mind unwind now and then isn’t a bad idea.”
Huo Jianan asked, “Would you like something to drink?”
“Coffee.”
Huo Jianan hesitated. “Aren’t you worried about staying up late if you drink coffee now?”
“I’m used to it. I can sleep even if I drink coffee at ten o’clock at night.”
“You’re a real night owl. Let’s have red wine instead.”
“Fine, red wine it is. I’ll have a glass with you.”
Meng Xien glanced at Huo Jianan, who was only wearing a knee-length skirt, and draped a blanket from the sofa over her legs. “Don’t catch a cold,” she said gently.
Huo Jianan found herself increasingly unable to understand Meng Xien. Her kindness and concern weren’t feigned or forced; they were genuine and almost instinctive. But why, then, would she team up with Wolfie?
Soon, Xiaoman entered with a bottle of red wine decanted into a decanter and a plate of sliced fruit.
Meng Xien teased as they played, “Jianan, you’ve gotten rusty.”
Huo Jianan, pouring her heart and soul into the game, her hands cramping from the effort, thought to herself, This performance isn’t bad at all. I’ve been training hard all afternoon.
“I do feel less smooth than before,” she admitted. “After my hospital stay, my coordination hasn’t been the same.”
Meng Xien hissed in sympathy. “Jianan,” she said seriously, “you can’t play games for such long hours anymore. You need more rest, especially for your brain.”
Huo Jianan, reluctant to give up gaming, muttered, “Yeah, I know my limits.”
After another half-hour, when the clumsy Huo Jianan was overwhelmed by a charging Mutated Giant Zombie, they paused to rest.
Meng Xien sipped her wine slowly, while Huo Jianan took a sip of wine followed by two bites of fruit, devouring most of the plateful.
Leaning back on the sofa, Meng Xien held her stemware glass by its slender stem, watching Huo Jianan eat like a hamster. She smiled. “Your coordination is lacking, but your appetite has certainly improved. That’s not a bad thing.”
Huo Jianan noticed the smile on her lips, but beneath it lay an unshakable regret, as if she were carrying a heavy burden of unspoken thoughts.
“Sister Meng, is there something regretful weighing on your heart?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Just something that suddenly came to mind.”
Meng Xien took a small sip of her red wine. “I only regret that my mother and mother-in-law passed away too soon. It would be wonderful if they were still here.”
So Sister Meng truly missed her mothers.
Meng Xien drained the rest of her wine. “I’ve been with the Huo family for ten years now. Aunt Xu has been so kind to me. She’s the closest person to me in this life, aside from my own mothers. You’re also very dear to me.”
Huo Jianan watched Meng Xien’s eyes grow red with emotion, her heart twisting with a complex mix of feelings.
“By the way, Aunt Xu mentioned again today that you want to help out at the company?”
Huo Jianan paused slightly. “Yes, Sister Meng. I want to work under you and learn from you.”
Meng Xien smiled at her. “Wouldn’t it be better to learn from Aunt Xu? She’s far more experienced than I am.”
“Grandmother is too strict. She’d criticize me ten times a day, and even if I’m not stupid, she’d make me feel that way. Sister Meng, please take me under your wing and let me be your assistant.”
Meng Xien’s expression turned serious. “Remember, you are an heir to Huo Corporation. Within the company, you can only be an assistant to Aunt Xu. No one else.”
Huo Jianan, taken aback by her serious demeanor, nodded. “Okay, I’ll remember that.”
“If you truly want to work with me, then you can,” Meng Xien said, patting her head. “But if you mess up, I’ll criticize you too. Can you handle that?”
Huo Jianan, not easily offended, nodded firmly. “I can handle it!”
“Also, you’re not allowed to throw tantrums at work like you do at home. No throwing things.”
“Alright, I promise I won’t lose my temper. If I accidentally damage company property, I’ll compensate at full value.”
Meng Xien chuckled. “Where would you get the money?”
“My pocket money. I have over 20 million.”
The day after Huo Jianan arrived in this world, she checked the original owner’s bank account balance on their phone—over 20 million!
Such immense wealth!
She stared at the long string of numbers, counting them again and again. That day was the happiest she’d felt since her transmigration.
Tonight’s scene took place in the cave. At 1 AM, the director finally called “cut.”
Hearing the call, Song Shiyu, clad in white robes, opened her eyes and sat up from the prop stone bed. Ruan Nianning, who had been sitting beside it, stood up and rolled up her wide sleeves. “That nearly killed me. I almost fell asleep.”
“What’s wrong? Didn’t sleep well last night?”
“I stayed up late and couldn’t get comfortable. I kept waking up.”
Ruan Nianning had barely slept at all, tossing and turning, haunted by the words “You’re a good person.”
She’s not a good person! She’s wicked! To seek revenge, she became the most shameless person, shamelessly exploiting others’ trust and feelings—she’s truly despicable!
Last night, she had several times wanted to call Huo Jianan and say, “I’m not a good person! Let’s get divorced!”
But then she remembered her mother’s painful death—how much suffering she must have endured! Did Huo Zhujun have any compassion? Did she spare her mother?
Ruan Nianning gritted her teeth and repeated to herself over and over: You’re not wrong! She’s the daughter of our enemy! Huo Zhujun and Xu Weiyi both deserve to die! They deserve the punishment they’ve earned!
Song Shiyu noticed, “Your eyes were swollen this morning. Go home today and get a good night’s sleep—try for four or five hours.”
“Mm, I do need to catch up on sleep.”
Xiao Zhu hurriedly handed her the phone. “Sister Ning, you have new messages.”
Ruan Nianning opened it to see four messages from Huo Jianan:
10:30 PM: Wife, what are you doing?
Immediately followed by: A heartbroken emoji, showing how much I miss you.
By 11:30 PM, seeing no response, she sent another: Wife, I have to go to work tomorrow. It’s my first day at the new company—I’m a little excited!
Just before midnight, Ruan Nianning sent her last text: Wife, I’m going to sleep. Goodnight.
It was now past 1 AM. She must be asleep by now, Ruan Nianning thought, putting down her phone. After a moment’s hesitation, she still replied: Goodnight.
Unexpectedly, Huo Jianan called her a moment later.
“Wife, are you back at the hotel?” Huo Jianan’s voice was muddled and groggy, as if she had just been startled awake, likely not even opening her eyes.
“Did I wake you?”
“No, no, I just happened to get up to use the restroom. Why are you so late tonight, Wife?”
Hearing how exhausted she sounded, yet forcing herself to talk, Ruan Nianning felt a sudden pang of tenderness. “Go back to sleep. We were filming night scenes today and just finished.”
“Good work, Wife. I’m starting work tomorrow, going back to the company,” Huo Jianan mumbled sleepily, her eyes already drifting shut, a smile still lingering on her lips. “I’ll protect you and the Huo Family.”
Ruan Nianning’s heart clenched. Suppressing the sting in her eyes, she said, “Go back to sleep. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight. You should sleep early too.”
