- Chapter 26.1 - The Wife Checks Up
After her bath, Huo Jianan injected her legs with the usual test agents. Lying in bed, she endured the excruciating pain, occasionally massaging her legs when it became unbearable.
The vase of Night Fragrance Lilies still sat on the windowsill. As promised, their fragrance grew more intense after dark.
Staring at the lilies, Huo Jianan admired their snow-white, slender petals, their jade-like elegance captivating. Bathed in the rich floral scent, she felt no discomfort. Instead, she found herself inexplicably recalling that passionate kiss shared with Ruan Nianning the day before Nianning joined the production team.
It had been her first kiss with someone…
Savoring the memory of that soft, sweet, and tender kiss, the pain in her legs seemed to dull.
Just as she was lost in daydreams, massaging her legs, her phone rang. Huo Jianan glanced at the screen—Wolfie was requesting a video call.
Startled, she quickly sat up, wiped the sweat from her forehead with a few tissues, hastily smoothed her hair, and finally pulled the blanket up to cover her chest. Remembering that Wolfie was her wife, covering herself so completely would be too formal, so she adjusted the blanket slightly, revealing a glimpse of her snow-white skin.
Only after completing these preparations did she hastily swipe the screen to answer the video call.
On the video call, Wolfie appeared to be in a hotel room, wearing a loose-fitting blouse with her chestnut waves casually draped over her shoulder.
Huo Jianan had just called out “Wife!” and was about to speak when Ruan Nianning’s expression hardened. “Why did it take you so long to answer?”
“This… I was just a bit slow in answering.”
The panic in her eyes didn’t escape Ruan Nianning’s gaze. Noticing her wife’s labored breathing, she asked bluntly, “What were you doing just now?”
“Nothing much, just took a shower. Afterward, I did some exercises on the bed.”
Damn it! My legs are killing me. I have to grit my teeth just to talk, and I still have to put on a smile for my wife.
At this time of night, Huo Jianan wasn’t gaming in the study. Instead of playing games properly, she’d gone to bed? And “exercises”? On the bed?
“What kind of exercises?”
“Just… just, um, I thought my arms were too muscular and wanted to tone them down.”
What a flimsy excuse! Does she think I’m a fool or a three-year-old?
Ruan Nianning’s expression turned frosty, her eyes glinting with a chilling coldness. “Move the camera around. I miss our comfortable room and want to take a proper look.”
Huo Jianan was caught between laughter and exasperation. Wolfie wasn’t interested in seeing the room; she just wanted to check if anyone was hiding in it.
Huo Jianan switched to the camera view, panning the room in a full 360-degree sweep, leaving no corner unexamined. Ruan Nianning’s expression visibly eased when she saw the neatly made bed, which showed no signs of recent use.
Noticing the Night Fragrance Orchids on the windowsill, she asked, “Why are there Night Fragrance Orchids here?”
“I bought them. Wang Baobao came over today, and we visited a friend’s newly opened flower shop. The flowers were beautiful and smelled wonderful, so I got a pot.”
Huo Jianan wondered if she was imagining it, but she thought she saw Wolfie blush. Suddenly, she realized the orchids’ scent was the same as her wife’s pheromones.
“Um,” Huo Jianan cleared her throat awkwardly, “how are you liking the hotel? If you’re not comfortable, we can upgrade to a more luxurious one. We’ll pay for it ourselves.”
“It’s fine. Sister Song and the main actors are staying here too. No need to change.”
“What about the food? I heard they’re serving boxed meals. Isn’t that too greasy and unhealthy?”
“We’re eating separately, and the food is decent.”
Huo Jianan stared at her wife on the phone screen, suddenly at a loss for words. In her previous life, she’d never had a girlfriend or a wife, so she really didn’t know how to chat with her.
“Oh, Xiaoman’s back today.”
Just as she finished speaking, she heard Xiaoman knocking at the door. “Young Miss, I’m coming in to take the flowers downstairs.”
Huo Jianan pulled her blanket up higher. “Come in.”
Xiaoman had been wondering why the Young Miss wasn’t playing games in the study and had returned to her room before 1 AM. Now, hearing the two chatting over video, she secretly chuckled to herself. So the Young Miss was rushing to video chat with the Young Madam.
Xiaoman quietly walked to the windowsill, picked up the tuberose plant, and left.
With Xiaoman gone, Huo Jianan clung to the conversation like a lifeline, now having something to talk about. She recounted all the gossip Xiaoman had shared about their recent trip back to the countryside to Wolfie.
“She made the village banquet sound so wonderful, especially the beef. Now I’m craving it too.”
Ruan Nianning’s lips curved into a smile. “Want me to invite the cook over to make you a few meals?”
“No, let’s not. Chef Lu’s cooking is excellent too. If I brought in a new cook just for a taste, he might think I’m trying to fire him. Why cause trouble?”
Ruan Nianning smiled brightly and suddenly locked eyes with Huo Jianan.
Huo Jianan felt flustered under her gaze, her snow-white skin flushing visibly. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Jianan, you’re really a good person.”
A faint blush spread across Huo Jianan’s pale face, her lovely eyes softening with bashful amusement. “I’ve always been a good person, you know.”
After hanging up, the painkiller in Huo Jianan’s leg wore off, and the ache intensified. Unable to sleep, she sat up and continued massaging her leg.
So Wolfie finally admitted I’m a good person, huh?
Huo Jianan continued kneading her leg, lost in thought. After an indeterminate amount of time, she sighed softly. But then again, is Wolfie really such a terrible person?
With this thought, she picked up her phone and sent Ruan Nianning a text: “Wife, you’re a good person too. Hard work on the set. Goodnight.”
Ruan Nianning, who was holding her clothes and about to take a shower, heard her phone chime. She picked it up and froze when she read the message, her eyes suddenly welling with tears.
She had come to seek revenge, infiltrating Huo Jianan’s life and scheming tirelessly to destroy the Huo family. How could she possibly be considered a good person?
A misty haze blurred Ruan Nianning’s vision.
“I’m not a good person.” Ruan Nianning typed these words, then quickly deleted them, leaving only two words: “Goodnight.”
That night, Huo Jianan slept soundly, lulled to sleep by his wife’s goodnight wishes. The next morning, as he descended the stairs for breakfast, he saw Meng Xien already seated at the dining table.
Meng Xien had arrived in Changbin on a flight that landed at midnight last night, so she must have gotten home around 2 AM.
Huo Jianan glanced at the clock—it was 8 AM. Why wasn’t Meng Xien still asleep? Her long hair was neatly styled, her makeup flawless, and she looked perfectly refreshed.
“Jianan’s down,” Meng Xien said, surprised to see Huo Jianan in the dining hall at this hour.
Housekeeper He chuckled, “Miss Meng, you don’t know that the Young Miss hasn’t slept in late since her wedding.”
Meng Xien was taken aback. “I never thought a night owl like you would be up so early.” Noticing Huo Jianan was alone, she asked, “Where’s Nianning? Didn’t she come down with you?”
“The Young Madam went to film a movie,” Housekeeper He replied. “She left just a couple of days ago.”
Meng Xien was startled, then smiled and teased Huo Jianan, “You agreed to that? You’re willing to let your wife leave?”
“The production urgently needed a lead actress, so they approached her,” Huo Jianan explained. “She really wanted to go, so I let her. I can always visit the set later.”
“You’re perfect for your wife, but I wonder if she feels the same way about you?”
Huo Jianan looked at Sister Meng, who would one day team up with her wife to oppose her, and laughed heartily. “Of course she’s wonderful to me! We’re the happiest couple in the world.”
She added pointedly, “No one can ever separate us.”
That was a message for Meng Xien: Our relationship is as unbreakable as a bronze wall and iron moat. Don’t even think about trying to get to me through her.
Meng Xien neither confirmed nor denied this. She lowered her head to take a sip of coffee, then suddenly patted Huo Jianan on the shoulder. “I have a gift for you!”
She went upstairs and returned holding a box.
“Look! Do you like it? It’s the globally limited platinum edition of Glory Mission you’ve always wanted. Only 100 sets were ever made, randomly gifted to players back in the day.
I knew you’d always wanted one, so when I was in Country F, I managed to get my hands on a brand-new set—straight from S Company’s own collection!
How about that? Did you ever expect this? Are you happy?!”
It was clear that Meng Xien was genuinely delighted and proud to give this gift. The original owner of this body, obsessed with games, would have been bouncing with excitement upon receiving it.
