- Chapter 23 - Ruan Nianning's Charm
Huo Jianan applied the medication to her legs, enduring nearly an hour of excruciating pain. Exhausted and having just experienced the thrill of her first kiss, drenched in nervous anticipation, she soon felt drowsy and quickly fell asleep.
In the middle of the night, half-awake, she heard Ruan Nianning get up, rummage through the wardrobe for a while, and then go to the bathroom. She heard the toilet flush, and soon after, Ruan Nianning returned to bed, lifted the quilt, and continued sleeping.
Huo Jianan mumbled sleepily, “Wife, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just go back to sleep.”
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment. Under the quilt, she reached out and took Wolfie’s hand, coaxing like she would a child, “Sleep tight, sweetheart. We have to catch a plane tomorrow.”
Ruan Nianning paused, then let out a soft chuckle and allowed her hand to be held. In that moment, she felt completely relaxed and drifted back to sleep.
The next morning, Huo Jianan woke up as soon as her alarm rang and reached for her phone.
Unexpectedly, someone had already gotten up. “You’re awake. Do you want to sleep a little longer?”
Huo Jianan paused, her gaze sweeping the room. She realized Ruan Nianning wasn’t in bed but sitting upright at the dressing table, applying makeup.
“Wife, why are you up so early?” Huo Jianan asked, propping herself up with her hands. “I didn’t even know you’d woken up.”
Ruan Nianning glanced at Huo Jianan’s reflection in the mirror and smiled faintly. “I just got up.” In truth, she hadn’t slept well last night, falling asleep late and drifting in and out of fitful slumber, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts. When dawn broke, she decided to get up.
Huo Jianan yawned, stretched lazily, and deftly pressed the remote control to summon her wheelchair. She transferred herself into it with practiced ease.
Watching her fluid movements in the mirror, Ruan Nianning was struck by how quickly Huo Jianan had adapted. It had only been a few days since their wedding, yet she had progressed from struggling to get in and out of bed and needing assistance to transfer to her wheelchair to managing independently—transferring herself, using the restroom, and dressing without help.
Ruan Nianning’s feelings were complicated. She was amazed by Huo Jianan’s astonishing resilience, yet she deeply felt she wasn’t a worthy wife. She had never truly given Huo Jianan the unwavering care she deserved.
But what could she do?
Although Huo Jianan seemed like a completely different person after marriage—kind, gentle, and serene, always looking out for him—she was still the daughter of his enemy! He could never truly love her.
Huo Jianan drove her wheelchair to the bathroom to wash up. Unexpectedly, she found a strange packaging bag in the trash. Picking it up, she saw the word “Omega” written in large letters, with the words “Fever Suppression Patch” in smaller text beside it.
So it was an Omega’s Fever Suppression Patch!
Ever since reading the health pamphlet she’d brought back from the hospital, Huo Jianan had gained a basic understanding of Alphas and Omegas.
Did my wife use a Fever Suppression Patch? Did she have a fever last night? Has her heat period arrived? Or was it a forced temporary fever triggered by Alpha pheromones?
At this thought, Huo Jianan shuddered in fear. She instinctively touched the back of her neck. She hadn’t deliberately released pheromones to seduce Wolfie. But then she remembered how passionately they had kissed last night, how deeply they had been entangled. Could I have accidentally released them in the heat of the moment?
No, apart from Wolfie’s distinctive floral scent—like an unknown, pleasant floral fragrance—she didn’t detect any other unusual odors.
Huo Jianan, brimming with certainty, concluded that Wolfie’s heat period was approaching.
Moments later, refreshed from her morning routine, she emerged from the bathroom. Her face, now washed, glowed with a luminous, snow-white radiance. Perhaps due to her recent good meals and restful sleep, she appeared completely rejuvenated, no longer the frail, weary figure she had been. Instead, her youthful vitality seemed to radiate from her, her skin practically glowing with youthful vitality.
As she passed Ruan Nianning, she watched Wolfie meticulously applying her makeup with a mixture of admiration and bewilderment. The thought of spending so much time and effort on cosmetics was utterly foreign to her.
Ruan Nianning noticed her gaze shifting between Wolfie and the array of cosmetics on the table. “Want to try makeup? I’m almost done.”
Huo Jianan shook her head. “I don’t wear makeup.”
“You have such beautiful skin—fair, smooth, and naturally radiant. You’re naturally gorgeous.”
Huo Jianan chuckled. “Wife, you’re a naturally gorgeous beauty too. Besides, I’m just staying at home. There’s no need for makeup when I don’t have any social engagements.”
Ruan Nianning’s heart stirred as she tentatively asked, “Jianan, have you considered joining the company and helping Grandmother manage the Huo family’s businesses? At least it would be less boring than staying cooped up at home all day.”
As she applied her lipstick, her gaze remained fixed on Huo Jianan’s reflection in the mirror, watching intently for any subtle change in expression. She wasn’t sure if Jianan would agree.
Huo Jianan’s sole passion lay in video games. She hated being in the spotlight, hated interacting with people, and despised the way their eyes lingered on her legs and their whispered gossip. Yet the business world demanded constant social interaction with all sorts of people.
Ruan Nianning understood why Huo Jianan had no desire to involve herself in company management, but she needed to persuade Jianan to take over. Only then would she have the opportunity to make Jianan rise to the heavens and fall to the depths of the earth, to defy Xu Weiyi, and to watch Jianan personally destroy the Huo family’s vast commercial empire—the culmination of Xu Weiyi’s lifelong efforts!
Huo Jianan was somewhat taken aback, not expecting Wolfie to actively encourage her to take charge of the company.
“Helping Grandmother manage the company… I’ve thought about it too,” Huo Jianan said, rolling her wheelchair toward the dressing room to pick out an outfit. “But I don’t know anything. I have no idea how to run a company.”
Ruan Nianning hadn’t expected Huo Jianan to agree so readily. Suppressing her excitement, she pressed her advantage, coaxing her gently.
“It’s precisely because you don’t know that you should join the company and learn from Grandmother.” She walked over from the dressing table, leaning against the door with one hand and tucking the other behind her back. Her voice was patient and persuasive as she stared intently at Huo Jianan. “As you learn, you’ll gain the skills, won’t you? To be blunt, Grandmother is getting on in years. If she’s no longer with us one day, won’t we have to rely on ourselves?”
Ruan Nianning felt cold-blooded, ruthless, and cunning. She was doing something vile and despicable: exploiting Huo Jianan’s love for her to manipulate her into meddling in company affairs, then treacherously destroying everything the Huo family held dear and utterly crushing the arrogant Xu Weiyi.
The girl in the wheelchair was carefully selecting clothes from the row of garments in the wardrobe, her fingertips gliding over the soft, comfortable fabrics. The more gentle and relaxed her beautiful, lovely features appeared, the more Ruan Nianning’s chest tightened, as if weighed down by a heavy stone, suffocating her.
I’ve known Huo Jianan for two years, but never before has anything felt this difficult.
I’m deceiving an innocent young girl, luring her step by step into the trap I’ve set. And she’s been so kind to me, especially after our marriage. She’s transformed completely, becoming gentle and refined, never forcing me to do anything, and even giving me the care and concern my father never showed me after my mother’s passing.
Ruan Nianning felt utterly wretched. The hand she had behind her back clenched into a fist, her nails digging painfully into her flesh.
“You’re right,” Huo Jianan said. “I’ll give it serious thought.”
Her grandmother had told her she didn’t need to work, that she could simply enjoy being a major shareholder, and that she, Ruan Nianning, and their future children could live a carefree life of leisure. But she didn’t want that.
Huo Jianan, having finished trying on the outfit, turned her wheelchair. “Wife, what do you think of this?”
Ruan Nianning glanced at her, her smile stiff, as if it took great effort to maintain. “It looks great. It suits you.”
Only then did Huo Jianan notice her pallid complexion. “Wife, are you alright? Does something hurt?”
“It’s nothing, I probably just got up too early.”
Huo Jianan said, “Have a bowl of hot congee for breakfast, and you can catch up on sleep on the plane.”
“Mm, I know.” Ruan Nianning noticed her holding her clothes and suddenly offered, “Let me help you get dressed.”
Huo Jianan flushed crimson. “I can do it myself. You should go rest first. I’m fine.”
“I’m about to join the production team and won’t be back for four or five months. Can’t I at least help you get dressed once?”
Huo Jianan: “…” She reluctantly agreed.
Blushing, she allowed her wife to remove her nightgown, help her into her underwear, then a long-sleeved shirt and sweater. Ruan Nianning then carried her to the bed, patiently and gently helping her pull on her pants.
Throughout this, Ruan Nianning remained silent. She stood so close to Huo Jianan that her head nearly touched her chest. Soft strands of hair cascaded down, drifting in the air with each movement. Huo Jianan could smell the faint scent of shampoo, mixed with a delicate floral fragrance that lingered in the air, reaching deep into her heart.
Huo Jianan’s gaze lingered on Ruan Nianning’s shimmering hair, resisting the urge to grab a strand and bury her nose in it for a deep sniff.
After Huo Jianan finished getting dressed, Ruan Nianning straightened her hair, but she kept her head lowered, avoiding eye contact.
Huo Jianan found this strange and worried. “Wife, what’s wrong?”
Today was the day Ruan Nianning was supposed to join the film set. Wolfie should have been excited, but instead, she seemed subdued.
“If you’re not feeling well, we can reschedule your flight. Take a day off from the production and leave tomorrow.”
“No need, I’m perfectly fine.” When Ruan Nianning finally looked up, she flashed a bright, radiant smile. “You promised to visit the set. Don’t keep me waiting too long.”
So that’s what it was about?
Huo Jianan smiled. “Alright, Wife. I’ll come in a few days.”
After breakfast, Huo Jianan offered to drive Ruan Nianning to the airport. But Ruan Nianning stopped her. “There’s no need for you to make a special trip. The driver will take me, and my assistant will meet me at the airport.”
Seeing her persistence, Huo Jianan didn’t press further. She watched them load the luggage into the car, then watched Ruan Nianning get into the Rolls-Royce. The actress rolled down the window and waved goodbye. Huo Jianan smiled and waved back. “Wife, have a safe journey! Make a great impression on set! This show is definitely going to be a hit! I can’t wait to see it!”
“It’s still a long way off. From filming to wrapping up and post-production, the earliest it’ll air is late next year. What will you watch until then?”
“I’ll re-watch Thief Princess a few times, imagining I’m that pampered little prince. At least I’m a beautiful heiress myself, so it’s not entirely wishful thinking.”
Ruan Nianning chuckled at her joke. “Call me before you visit the set.”
“Got it, Wife.”
Huo Jianan saw her to the gate, her gaze following the car until it turned the corner and disappeared. Only then did she slowly turn back.
Housekeeper He, observing the close bond between the Young Miss and the Young Madam, felt comforted and was delighted for Madam. Perhaps before long, the Huo Family will welcome a little girl, she thought.

Huo Jianan: Wife, don’t blame yourself. I’ve known exactly what you were planning all along.
Ruan Nianning: !!!
