- Chapter 22.1 - My First True Kiss
Ruan Nianning sat alone in the restaurant, gazing out the window at the city’s dazzling lights.
At 9 p.m., the thick night curtain slowly lifted over Changbin Avenue. Countless lights illuminated every corner of the city, creating a dazzling spectacle like a crystal palace. The skyscrapers, shopping centers, and luxury residences lining both sides of the avenue stood like towering giants, overlooking the bustling streets below.
Since marrying into the Huo Family, Ruan Nianning felt genuinely idle. In her acting days, she never had the leisure to enjoy a quiet, undisturbed dinner like this.
She checked her phone—no missed calls, no new messages. It seemed Huo Jianan had completely lost interest in her.
Ruan Nianning paused. That wasn’t entirely true.
At least Jianan had helped secure her acting opportunities, gazed at her with tenderness, and smiled gently.
They hadn’t shared any intimate moments in three days—no hand-holding, no kisses. Even their shared bed at night was merely two separate spaces.
She didn’t have to suppress her intense loathing and resentment to kiss the daughter of her enemy, forcing a smile while pretending affection.
She should have felt relieved, as if a heavy burden had been lifted. Yet surprisingly, Ruan Nianning felt no sense of relief or joy. A strange thought surfaced: Could it be that I’ve lost all attraction for Huo Jianan?
But without Jianan’s trust and reliance, how could she ever dismantle the Huo Corporation and achieve her revenge?
Ruan Nianning raised her wineglass, absently swirling the crimson liquid. Suddenly, a cell phone’s ringtone pierced the private room’s silence.
She glanced at the phone on the table. No name appeared on the caller ID, only a string of numbers—numbers she knew by heart.
Her eyes lit up. She set down her glass and answered the call.
“Hello, Jianan.”
“Hey, Wife. Are you done eating?”
“Yes, we’re just finishing up.”
“Do you have any plans after dinner?”
“No, um… the others are going to a bar, but I’m heading home.”
“Great. I’ll wait for you to get back.”
After hanging up, Ruan Nianning called the server to settle the bill. She slipped on her hat and mask, grabbed her bag, and left.
She exited the private, high-end dining rooms and turned into a long corridor. The restaurant, bustling with patrons at this hour, echoed faintly with the sounds of drinking, laughter, and flirtatious banter drifting from the various private rooms. Some were likely business dinners, others gatherings with friends, and a few romantic rendezvous between couples.
Ruan Nianning sent a text to the driver and hurried toward the elevator. Unexpectedly, she bumped into someone in the corridor—a tall, thin man reeking of alcohol.
“Hey, isn’t that Sister Ning?” The man blocked her path, boldly eyeing her under the influence of alcohol. Her waist was slender, her legs long, and the exposed calf revealed skin as smooth as cream, undoubtedly soft and delicate to the touch. “Sister Ning, you’re newly married! I haven’t had a chance to congratulate you! Congratulations!”
Ruan Nianning recognized him: Hu Hao, the son of Zou Guohua’s wife’s sister. After failing the art school entrance exam, he’d become a background actor, obsessed with breaking into the entertainment industry and achieving stardom. He’d repeatedly asked Zou Guohua to ask Ruan Nianning to mentor him, but she’d always refused outright.
Aside from her disdain for Zou Guohua and reluctance to help him, there was a fundamental reason: Hu Hao simply lacked any notable qualities. His looks were mediocre at best, his acting nonexistent, and his ambitions far exceeded his abilities. He’d spread rumors about being Ruan Nianning’s relative, looking down on even the most minor background roles. Despite this, he considered himself a seasoned ladies’ man, flaunting his 180 cm height and D-rank Alpha status. He boasted of his philandering ways, flirting shamelessly with women, and even once tried to make advances on Ruan Nianning herself.
On set, Liu Hao never caught so much as a glance from Ruan Nianning. Now, in the hallway, she merely acknowledged him with a detached, “Oh, it’s you, Liu Hao. What a coincidence.”
“Isn’t it just?” he replied, his gaze roaming unabashedly over the top-tier omega. “I’m here with a few senior colleagues for a meal, and I never expected to run into you, Sister Ning! You’ve become even more beautiful since becoming a Young Madam of a wealthy family.”
Ruan Nianning suppressed her discomfort, her expression cold. “I have things to do. I won’t keep you from your gathering.” With that, she turned and walked away, clutching her bag.
Liu Hao watched her slender figure, dressed in pristine white like a blooming lily, graceful and elegant. He waved lazily, a nonchalant smirk on his face. “Take care, Sister Ning.”
Once the elevator doors closed and Ruan Nianning vanished from sight, Liu Hao’s expression darkened, his smile fading. He licked his dry lips and sneered, “What’s so special about her? She just climbed her way into a wealthy family!”
Ruan Nianning returned home and went straight to the third floor. From her spacious bedroom came the sounds of dialogue and fighting. She pushed open the door to find Huo Jianan sitting in her wheelchair, dressed in comfortable loungewear, engrossed in watching TV.
It was a historical drama she had starred in last year, where she played the world’s greatest female thief, blessed with both beauty and martial prowess. The male lead was a noble prince with mediocre fighting skills who abandoned his luxurious life to wander the jianghu, vowing to capture the female thief.
In short, it was a classic tale of star-crossed lovers, destined to clash yet drawn together, ultimately ending with their bitter rivals falling head over heels for each other.
“Darling, you’re back.”
“Mm-hmm. Why aren’t you watching Clear Song of the Long Night?”
Huo Jianan replied, “Isn’t that the show you’re in? I’d never miss a show starring my wife!”
Ruan Nianning’s lips curved into a smile. “Is it good?”
“Absolutely! I’ve only watched the first three episodes, but it’s hilarious!”
Ruan Nianning’s heart stirred with curiosity. She couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong with Huo Jianan. She had watched this show at least eight, if not ten, times before. Yet seeing her wife’s fresh enthusiasm, it was as if she were watching it for the first time.
Suppressing her suspicions, Ruan Nianning took off her coat and went to take a shower.
When Ruan Nianning emerged from the bathroom, she found a glass of honey-lemon water waiting for her on the table.
The TV was off, and Huo Jianan was sitting on the bed. Noticing her gaze, Jianan smiled. “Wife, I made you a glass of lemon water. It’ll help after drinking.”
Ruan Nianning paused briefly, nodded, and walked over to pick up the glass and drink it.
After drinking and taking a shower, her throat was dry, and the glass of lemon water was perfect.
The water was warm, with a faint sweetness and a slight tartness. As Ruan Nianning sipped the lemon water, she couldn’t quite describe her feelings.
During the most grueling times of filming, when she returned home covered in scrapes, bruises, and exhaustion, reeking of alcohol from social obligations, she had longed for a loving partner to bring her a glass of milk or warm water.
Now, someone was doing just that. The irony was that this person was the daughter of her enemy, and she had married her for revenge.
Tomorrow was the day of the “return visit” ceremony. Huo Jianan had prepared everything today. “Wife, I’ve prepared all the gifts for tomorrow’s return visit.”
Mentioning this made Ruan Nianning unhappy. She reluctantly acknowledged with a soft “mm,” set down her cup, and said, “Don’t bring too many gifts. Don’t make it too easy for him.”
“I know, it’s just some ordinary things. Wife, don’t let this trivial matter bother you. It’s not worth ruining your mood over.”
Ruan Nianning glanced at her. The Huo Jianan of the past had a fiery temper, smashing anything in her path whenever something displeased her, reducing everything to a chaotic mess.
During those moments, she would recall being pinned against a wall, her belongings strewn across the floor—books and homework scattered noisily, her skirt ripped, her backpack slashed, her hair brutally cut into an ugly style.
At such times, she felt like a tightly wound quail, her eyes wide open, her heart pounding wildly out of control. She wanted to flee! She loathed this brutal violence, detested the violent soul beneath that disabled body.
But she wanted revenge! She had to stay to take revenge!
In those past moments, she would clench her fists, her face pale, forcing herself to calm and console Huo Jianan.
Now, the present Huo Jianan was the one comforting her.
Ruan Nianning remarked casually, “Jianan, you’re actually quite a good person.”
Huo Jianan laughed nonchalantly. “I’ve always been a good person.”
Ruan Nianning’s heart skipped a beat, the sensation growing stronger. This person wasn’t the same Huo Jianan she knew; she just shared the same body. As she spoke, her snow-white, pink-tinged lips curved adorably, exuding a playful softness.
Ruan Nianning lifted the quilt and climbed into bed. Suddenly, she leaned over and gently kissed the corner of Huo Jianan’s mouth, the touch tender and careful.
Huo Jianan: “……”
Is Wolfie back to trying to kiss me at every opportunity?
“You washed your hair?” Ruan Nianning asked.
Huo Jianan’s face lit up as if she’d won a prize. “Finally! I can wash my hair again. My scalp feels so refreshed and clean.”
Ruan Nianning smiled faintly. “How did the hospital check-up go today? Is your head injury fully healed?”
“It’s fine. No problems.”
Ruan Nianning hummed in acknowledgment. “I contacted Sister Luo today. We’re signing the contract tomorrow, and I start filming the day after.”
“That soon?”
“The production has already been delayed. The director wants me to join the crew as quickly as possible. My flight to City D is at 9 a.m. the day after tomorrow.”
“Are you filming on location?”
“Some scenes will be filmed on location, and we’ll build some sets too, but most of it will still be shot at the film studio and in green screens.”
Since Wolfie was about to start work, Huo Jianan had no reason to stop her. She sincerely hoped that, beyond seeking revenge, Wolfie could do something she truly enjoyed.
“I’ll take you to the airport the day after tomorrow morning.”
In the past, Ruan Nianning would have refused. She didn’t like Huo Jianan clinging to her every moment, and of course, the lazy Huo Jianan wouldn’t have offered in the first place.
“Okay, but you’ll have to get up early. Can you even wake up that early?”
Huo Jianan flicked her finger against Wolfie’s nose, laughing. “I actually woke up earlier than you today. Which little piggy is sleeping in today?”
The sensation at the tip of her finger was smooth and delicate, like touching warm, creamy jade or the softest silk—a skin texture that defied description.
Realizing what she’d done, Huo Jianan flushed crimson. She’d actually dared to tease Wolfie, and it took her aback.
Fortunately, Wolfie didn’t notice the slight offense. She rolled over onto her back like a puppy, her eyes half-closed as she grumbled, “You’re the pig.”
After a long while, once Wolfie had fallen asleep, Huo Jianan climbed out of bed, transferred herself into her wheelchair, and went to the bathroom, gently closing the door behind her.
In the empty bathroom late at night, she took out the medication and, following Doctor Jiang’s instructions from earlier that day, injected a small dose into each thigh.
Ten minutes later, the drug began to take effect. Her previously numb legs tingled, and soon she felt a tearing pain in her muscles, a relentless ripping that twisted her muscles into contorted shapes.
Huo Jianan trembled violently from the pain, her teeth grinding audibly. Gripping the wheelchair’s armrests tightly, she endured silently, refusing to make a sound.
Just as the pain threatened to make her collapse from the wheelchair, she remembered Doctor Jiang’s words. Bending forward with great effort, she began massaging her legs. Her hands trembled from the agony as she mechanically, stiffly, continued the massage.
Huo Jianan, you can do this! You will stand up! You will! she repeated in her mind.
An hour later, Huo Jianan collapsed weakly into her wheelchair, gasping for breath.
In the quiet bathroom, her labored breathing was painfully audible, like a warrior who had survived a fierce battle but lay too weak to rise, gasping desperately for air on the battlefield.
After what felt like an eternity, Huo Jianan finally regained some strength. She opened the door, maneuvered her wheelchair out, and quietly returned to bed.
The next morning, the alarm clock jolted Huo Jianan awake. She fumbled for her phone and silenced the alarm.
She had injected herself with medication late the previous night and gone to bed exhausted. Whether from the pain or sheer fatigue, she had fallen asleep instantly and slept deeply, without stirring.
Since arriving in this world, her nights had been restless. Turning over in the middle of the night was so difficult and tiring that she had to limit her movements, but this made it hard to sleep comfortably. She would often wait until drowsiness overtook her, only falling asleep when utterly exhausted.
But last night, she had practically fallen asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.
Huo Jianan skillfully got out of bed, washed up, brushed her hair, and dressed. Only after she was fully prepared did she go to wake Wolfie.
“Darling, it’s time to wake up.”
Ruan Nianning groggily opened her eyes, bewildered by her recent sleep patterns. For three consecutive days, she’d slept unusually deeply. The first two nights were understandable, given how late she’d stayed up, but last night she’d gone to bed early, yet still slept like a log.
She found it inconceivable. Years of irregular work hours on set had left her with poor sleep quality. Moreover, with someone lying beside her, even the slightest noise usually woke her.
Yet here she was, sleeping straight through until dawn, needing Huo Jianan to rouse her.
Slowly, she propped herself up on her elbows, her slender back leaning against the headboard. Still drowsy, she exuded a languid charm—her beautiful eyes half-lidded, soft hair cascading loosely across her chest, and the strap of her nightgown slipped off, draped over her arm, revealing a glimpse of her snow-white shoulder and a tantalizing hint of cleavage.
The sudden, unexpected sight of such sensual beauty struck Huo Jianan. She quickly averted her gaze. “I’ll head to the study first and wait for you there. We’ll go downstairs together.”
Ruan Nianning, completely oblivious to her state of undress, called out to Huo Jianan as she wheeled toward the door. “Jianan!”
Her early morning voice was a little hoarse. Ruan Nianning cleared her throat. “What did you put in yesterday’s lemon water?”
Huo Jianan turned her wheelchair, puzzled. “Just lemon water, that’s all.”
“That lemon water tasted really good,” Ruan Nianning said. She wouldn’t dare mention her suspicion that Huo Jianan had added something to the water, which had made her sleep so deeply.
Huo Jianan smiled. “I added a touch of honey—just a tiny bit. It’s not fattening. It’s good for your skin, calming, and helps you sleep.”
Ruan Nianning felt a weight lift from her chest. She nodded and hummed in acknowledgment. “No wonder I slept so deeply. I almost couldn’t wake up.”
Huo Jianan chuckled. “That’s not the lemon water’s fault. You’ve always been a sleepy little pig.”
Before she could finish speaking, a pillow crashed into her face with a thud.
Zou Guohua had risen early, and his wife, Xu Yimei, was already up, getting ready. She was putting on makeup and trying on outfits. Seeing her moving slowly, Zou Guohua went to wake Zou Xiaojing. “Hurry up! Your sister will be home soon! Miss Huo is coming too!”
Zou Xiaojing was the eldest daughter of Zou Guohua and his new wife, currently 19 years old—only six years younger than Ruan Nianning. They had originally had a younger sister, but she was lost in a miscarriage.
This was also one of the main reasons Ruan Nianning deeply resented her father. When her mother died and her father remarried, she had assumed the child in her stepmother’s womb was their first child together. It wasn’t until Zou Xiaojing appeared that she learned her father had been unfaithful years earlier, and the child he’d fathered with another woman was already several years old.
When Zou Xiaojing first heard Ruan Nianning was coming, she snorted coldly, too lazy to move. “Let her come if she wants. What’s the big deal?” But when she heard Miss Huo was coming too, she shot up from her blankets with a whoosh. “Huo Jianan is coming too?”
“Don’t call her by her full name! Call her Miss Huo! She’s your sister’s newlywed wife, of course she’ll be coming to the homecoming ceremony!”
Zou Xiaojing’s eyes lit up. She leaped from bed and shouted, “Mom! Where’s the new dress you bought me? Where did you put it?”
The black Rolls-Royce slowly entered the neighborhood, neither particularly upscale nor rundown. The residents who had been chatting in small groups were instantly drawn to the luxurious car. Several passersby also stopped to gawk.
“Wow! A Rolls-Royce! The Spirit of Ecstasy! And it even has luminous glass!”
“Real money here!”
“Whose is this?”
Zou Guohua and his wife, Xu Yimei, had been waiting at the base of their apartment building for some time. When the car arrived, both their faces lit up into radiant smiles.
Xu Yimei exclaimed, “Guohua, your daughter married well! The Huo Family is the most renowned clan in Changbin! They’re big shots! They’ll definitely support their father-in-law in the future. With just a flick of their fingers, we’ll never have to worry again!”
“Shh! Don’t say that! You know Ningning’s temper!” Zou Guohua hadn’t told his wife that he’d had to enlist the Huo Family Young Miss to mediate before Ruan Nianning would agree to return home.
“What are you afraid of? Even if she’s flown to the heavens, even if she’s gone from a sparrow to a phoenix, you’re still her father!” Xu Yimei scoffed. “As long as you’re willing to swallow your pride, do you think the Huo Family would dare lose face?”
