- Chapter 20 - The Alpha I Love
When Ruan Nianning woke up, she immediately noticed the empty space beside her—the person who had been in bed was gone. Her gaze shifted, and she realized the lewd oil painting that had hung on the wall during their wedding night was also missing.
Good. My eyes are clean now.
“Darling, you’re awake. I was just about to wake you up.” Huo Jianan’s wheelchair stopped at a distance, her smile warm as she watched Ruan Nianning.
Ruan Nianning was dressed in a fitted wool sweater, comfortable loungewear pants, and delicate leather boots. Her long black hair cascaded softly around her shoulders, smooth and glossy. The morning sunlight streaming through the half-drawn curtains illuminated her porcelain face, creating a luminous glow that framed her gentle smile. She looked like an angel from a painting.
Ruan Nianning stared, momentarily stunned. For a fleeting moment, she felt disoriented, as if memories from a distant past were surfacing.
That year, when she won the Best Supporting Actress award and began making a name for herself in the film industry, a reporter had asked her what she looked for in a future partner, whether male or female.
Ruan Nianning remembered her half-joking, half-serious response: “I prefer female Alphas. I want her to be beautiful, gentle, mature, and refined. Since I have a bit of a temper and am not exactly the popular, sweet Omega type, I can only hope my Alpha will tolerate my occasional ferocity.”
Ruan Nianning gazed at the figure before her, now seeming almost unreal. The morning light softened her features, and her smiling lips curved with elegant composure.
Lowering her head, Ruan Nianning gripped the quilt tightly, feeling for the first time how wonderful it would be if this woman weren’t her enemy’s daughter.
But she quickly suppressed these unwelcome thoughts, remembering her mother’s death. Her gaze darkened, becoming deep and cold once more.
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. Something’s wrong. Wolfie was so cute and dazed when she first opened her eyes—why did she suddenly turn into a ravenous beast?
Could she have morning crankiness?
“Wife, if you’re not fully awake, you should go back to sleep. It’s still early.”
“No need. I’m awake now.” Her tone was icy, each word squeezed out between clenched teeth.
“Oh, well, I’ll head out then. I’ll wait for you to join me for breakfast.” Huo Jianan, fearing collateral damage, tactfully excused herself before retreating.
When Ruan Nianning descended to the dining hall, she found Huo Jianan chatting with Xiao Tao.
“Young Miss, are you hungry? Should we have something light?”
“No need. I’m not hungry. Let’s wait for the Young Madam to join us.”
Just as the words left her lips, Huo Jianan’s stomach grumbled loudly. She had woken up two hours earlier, strolled through the garden, and scrolled through her phone, leaving her stomach thoroughly awake and definitely hungry. Claiming she wasn’t hungry was a blatant lie.
Xiao Tao saw Ruan Nianning coming down from the stairs. “Good morning, Young Madam.”
Ruan Nianning nodded. “Good morning.”
Breakfast was quickly served. Huo Jianan gestured for Wolfie to sit down. “Wife, did you sleep well last night?”
“Yes,” Ruan Nianning replied, her eyes taking in the array of breakfast dishes on the table: steamed buns, fried dough sticks, savory pancakes, steamed cakes, tofu pudding, rice noodles, and, of course, a large salad, whole grain bread, hot milk, and freshly squeezed juice.
“Why aren’t you eating first?” Xiao Tao asked with a smile. “The Young Miss has been waiting for the Young Madam to arrive before eating. She truly dotes on you, Young Madam.”
Everyone in the Huo family knew that the Young Madam was a popular superstar, and their Young Miss adored her. Superstar Ruan had rejected all their lavish gifts—bags, jewelry, luxury cars, and mansions—returning them untouched. They’d almost given up hope, but on Valentine’s Day last year, the Young Miss sent flowers, which Superstar Ruan surprisingly accepted along with some small snacks. This greatly encouraged the Young Miss, who grew even more devoted. After two years of relentless pursuit, she had finally won the Young Madam’s heart.
Huo Jianan blushed as she placed a piece of steamed corn on Wolfie’s plate. Sitting up straight, she said, “Wife, feel free to eat whatever you like.”
Ruan Nianning hummed in acknowledgment and reciprocated the gesture, picking up her chopsticks to add a steamed bun to Huo Jianan’s plate. “I’ve been hearing you talk about these for days. Be careful, it’s hot.”
Huo Jianan, delighted by the attention, beamed. “Thank you, Wolfie.”
Hearing her nickname again, Ruan Nianning couldn’t help but chuckle. “You’re the one who looks like a wolf, with your love for meat.”
Huo Jianan chuckled sheepishly, biting into the bun and savoring it slowly.
The bottom of the bun was crisply golden-brown, while the top remained soft and fluffy. Each bite released a burst of savory meat, rich broth, and the aroma of wheat, all mingling together in a mouthwatering explosion of flavors.
Huo Jianan was overjoyed. In her past life, she’d only tasted such delicious steamed buns as a child. After growing up, she’d never found them as flavorful again—whether due to changes in ingredients or technique, the original magic had vanished.
Ruan Nianning found Huo Jianan’s ecstatic reaction a bit odd. She picked up a piece of savory pancake, its savory aroma wafting through the air. The crispy exterior gave way to a soft, fluffy interior, and she took a satisfying bite, sesame seeds clinging to her lips.
“Good, Wolfie?”
“Absolutely!” Ruan Nianning devoured two more bites, nearly tearing up with joy. “It’s been so long since I’ve had this! If my manager were here, she’d never let me touch this carb-laden, greasy goodness!”
Huo Jianan stuck out her tongue. “Being a celebrity is tough. So many restrictions and never getting to eat your fill. I could never handle it.”
“There’s no choice. Body management is crucial in our line of work.”
“Still, you shouldn’t deprive yourself. Wife, try this steamed bun—it’s delicious!”
Unable to resist her temptation, Ruan Nianning tried one and found it was indeed delicious!
Huo Jianan devoured four soup dumplings in one go. Turning around, she saw Wolfie Ruan wolfing down buns, flatbread, and beef noodle soup.
“Good, Wife?”
“Very good! It’s been so long since I’ve eaten something so satisfying.”
“If there’s anything else you want to eat, just tell me. In a few days, we’ll ask the kitchen to change the menu again. Let’s try all the delicious foods, okay?”
“Okay!”
Xiao Tao watched from the side. The Young Miss and the Young Madam are so close. Even breakfast is such a loving affair.
After breakfast, Ruan Nianning patted her now-round belly and glared fiercely at Huo Jianan.
This Huo Jianan is doing this on purpose! She knows I can’t eat carbs, yet she deliberately tempted me like this?!
At the gym, Ruan Nianning sweated profusely on the treadmill. After eating so much, she needed to run at least ten kilometers. But after three kilometers, the superstar wanted to quit.
Huo Jianan, seated in her wheelchair, urged Wolfie on. “Wife, don’t stop! With our agent away, I have to keep an eye on you. This is your chance to work alongside your idol, Sister Song—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! You need to be in peak condition for this project, right?”
Ruan Nianning’s teeth itched with hatred! Gritting her teeth, she forced herself to keep running.
Well, Huo Jianan, you really are out to get me!
*******
Huo Jianan: My wife is so happy with her breakfast. My favorability with her must be skyrocketing.
Ruan Nianning: I knew she held a grudge against me. She’s scheming this underhanded move to sabotage me.
Huo Jianan: Wife, would you like another round of snacks?
Ruan Nianning: Yes, yes!
