- Chapter 19 - Should I Confess?
The next day, when Huo Jianan woke up, Ruan Nianning was still asleep, her long hair cascading over the pillow and quilt. Her eyes were naturally closed, eyelashes trembling slightly, and her skin was snow-white, devoid of the sharpness and vigilance she carried when awake. Instead, she glowed with a soft, rosy light, the sleeping Wolfie looking endearingly docile.
Huo Jianan gently lifted her own side of the quilt, tucking the corner around Ruan Nianning. She then skillfully transferred herself to her wheelchair and went to the bathroom to wash up. Returning to the sofa, she patiently dressed herself.
It took some time and effort, and by the time she finished adjusting her pant legs, her breath came in slight gasps. But she was overjoyed; she had finally managed to dress herself without assistance.
As she left, she found Grandmother Huo already finished with breakfast. Housekeeper He was draping her coat over her shoulders, handing her her handbag, and preparing to see her out. Huo Jianan called out, “Grandmother!” from the stairwell, then descended using the lift.
“Grandmother, are you going to the company?” Huo Jianan’s voice carried a hint of envy. She too dreamed of making her mark, becoming a business queen like her grandmother, commanding respect and influence.
Grandmother Huo was quite surprised. Her granddaughter had always been a night owl, and the idea of her getting up so early seemed impossible.
“How did you manage to wake up so early?”
“Maybe it’s because I’ve been getting up early at the hospital these past few days. I can’t sleep anymore.”
“What about Nianning? How could she let you come down alone?” Grandmother Huo frowned, displeased at Ruan Nianning’s absence.
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly tugged at her grandmother’s sleeve. “Grandmother, don’t be angry. I snuck down myself. I wanted to show you that I can manage on my own.”
“You’re being reckless again!” Though stern, Grandmother Huo’s expression softened. “Just be careful. Remember, you’re the only granddaughter of the Huo family.” She turned to Housekeeper He. “When will Xiaoman return?”
“Madam, it will be a few more days. With her father’s passing and being the only child in the family, she needs to wait until the seventh day after the funeral.”
Grandmother Huo nodded. “Xien is on a business trip, so have Xiao Tao look after Jianan for the next few days. She’s been with the Huo family for several years now, so she can fill in for Xiaoman temporarily. As for Meng Xien, Sister Wang will keep an eye on her.”
“Very well, Madam.”
Seeing Grandmother Huo about to leave, Huo Jianan spoke up, “Grandmother, I need to speak with you for a moment.”
Grandmother Huo glanced at her, then turned to Housekeeper He. Understanding her look, Housekeeper He wheeled the young miss into the small reception room, and Grandmother Huo went out.
Only Grandmother Huo and Huo Jianan remained in the room.
“What is it you want to say?”
“Grandmother, I’ve decided I want to join the company. This isn’t a whim or a desire for novelty. I’m a member of the Huo family, and I’ve enjoyed all the privileges it has afforded me. I should shoulder my responsibilities and contribute to the Huo family’s glory.”
Huo Jianan spoke earnestly, her eyes shining. “But I’m not ready yet. I have something important I need to do first. As for what it is, I can’t reveal that just yet.”
Last night, Huo Jianan had lain awake, thinking about how she had become part of the Huo family. She would soon be living with Grandmother Huo, Meng Xien, and Ruan Nianning day in and day out. After much contemplation, she concluded that the most pressing matter was to uncover the truth behind Ruan Nianning’s mother’s death and unravel the source of Ruan Nianning’s hatred for the Huo family.
Wolfie lay beside Huo Jianan, her breathing even and soft, like a little animal snoring. She must have finally gotten what she wanted, because she fell asleep before Huo Jianan. Her breathing was rhythmic, with a gentle snoring sound, soft and adorable.
Huo Jianan gazed at the sleeping figure beside her, a faint smile curling her lips.
If Wolfie weren’t consumed by hatred, she’d be a straightforward and charming girl—of course, she’s also incredibly beautiful.
In the darkness, Huo Jianan sighed softly. The most direct way to unravel Ruan Nianning’s hatred would be to ask Ruan Nianning herself. Then she could tell her she’d taken revenge on the wrong person, that she’d regret it later, that she’d be so guilty she’d want to kill herself.
But Huo Jianan knew she couldn’t do that. If she said anything, Ruan Nianning would inevitably suspect her, and her status as a transmigrator would likely be exposed.
Should she confess to Ruan Nianning? Tell her she wasn’t the real Huo Jianan, that the person in this body was no longer the daughter of her enemy?
How would Ruan Nianning react? Refuse to believe this absurd fantasy? Or cruelly tell Grandmother Huo, “This person isn’t your granddaughter! Your precious granddaughter is long gone!”—using this to crush the Huo family?
What would Grandmother Huo’s reaction be? Shocked to the point of a fatal heart attack, allowing Wolfie to achieve her revenge? Or would she interrogate Huo Jianan relentlessly about the whereabouts of her beloved granddaughter, only to hand her over to research institutions in a desperate attempt to find her?
Huo Jianan’s heart raced with anxiety. In the end, she decided against rash action, choosing instead to wait and observe.
Upon hearing this, Grandmother Huo paused, reevaluating her granddaughter. Since her marriage, Huo Jianan’s temperament, demeanor, and even the way she looked at people had changed—she had become more mature and resilient.
In the two years they had lived together, the total amount of conversation between grandmother and granddaughter hadn’t equaled the past few days.
Grandmother Huo couldn’t help but wonder if she had truly misunderstood her granddaughter all along.
If her granddaughter truly harbored such ambitions, and if she devoted herself wholeheartedly to the task, with a few years of Grandmother Huo’s guidance and Xien’s support, it might indeed be possible to entrust the Huo Corporation to her.
Grandmother Huo didn’t ask what this urgent matter was.
“Very well. Do as you think best. Attend to your urgent matter first.”

Huo Jianan racked her brain: Should I confess? Should I confess? Should I confess? Forget it. My wife is so fierce—I’m too scared!
Ruan Nianning calculated: Bunny is a crafty little thing. If I don’t kiss her every day, she’ll get restless.
