- Chapter 17 - Between Grandmother and Wife
Huo Jianan was overjoyed to be discharged from the hospital. The moment she stepped out, she felt the air was fresher and freer.
The bandages on her head had been removed, leaving a bald patch that she found unsightly. Doctor Zhou had advised her to wait a few more days until the wound fully healed before washing her hair.
This was Huo Jianan’s first visit to the Huo Family Villa. The mansion was grand, imposing, yet exuded a refined elegance. She had never dared to dream of living in such a beautiful house. Amidst her excitement, she silently calculated that it must be worth hundreds of millions of yuan.
Due to Huo Jianan’s mobility issues, the three-story villa had been equipped with an additional elevator. She enthusiastically toured the floors, and Housekeeper He, noticing the young miss’s high spirits, wheeled her around to show her everything.
The first floor housed the living room, conference hall, activity room, bar, and kitchen. The second floor accommodated Grandmother Huo’s bedroom, study, music room, and art studio. On the third floor, the western side held Sister Meng’s bedroom and study, while the eastern side was reserved for Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning’s bedrooms and studies. The rooftop featured an observation deck where one could sit, enjoy tea, chat, and take in the scenery on pleasant days.
Huo Jianan, who had spent over two decades as a corporate drone, couldn’t help but inwardly marvel once more: This is what life is supposed to be like!
Housekeeper He said, “The art studio used to be on the third floor. But when you moved back in, Madam was worried your quarters weren’t spacious enough, so she moved the art studio to the second floor and converted this space into a study.”
Huo Jianan entered the study, which was essentially a gaming room. One wall featured a large display screen, with several gaming consoles neatly arranged beneath it. A bookshelf along the wall held a tidy collection of game cartridges and peripherals, along with various figurines. In front of the screen sat a sofa, and a coffee table held two game controllers, one on each side.
It seemed the original owner was truly a gaming enthusiast—and a tidy one at that. This must have been her favorite place, where she spent many enjoyable hours and clearly put considerable thought into its arrangement.
Huo Jianan said, “Housekeeper He, could you place a desk over there by the wall? Nothing too large.”
Huo Jianan wasn’t particularly interested in gaming. During her college days, she’d pulled all-night gaming sessions with her roommates, but after three years as a corporate drone, commuting from 9 AM to 6 PM and working herself ragged, whatever enthusiasm she’d once had had largely faded.
Unwilling to disturb the room’s contents, Huo Jianan simply asked Housekeeper He to bring in a desk and chair. Slightly taken aback by the Young Miss’s request, Housekeeper He replied, “Of course, Young Miss. I’ll have it set up for you today.”
Huo Jianan went to the bedroom.
The night she first arrived, she discovered she was paralyzed from the waist down, a shocking and overwhelming revelation. Later, she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and collapsed, requiring emergency medical attention. Today was the first time she could properly examine her bedroom with Ruan Nianning.
The bedroom was spacious, larger than the entire apartment she had rented in her previous life. Its opulent European decor featured high-quality light-colored wallpaper, a wide bed, and an elegant dressing table. One side of the dressing table led to a walk-in closet, adjacent to which was the bathroom. The other side held a comfortable sofa, beside which stood a flower stand adorned with a vibrant bouquet of pink roses. The curtains were drawn back in a graceful arch, allowing the bright sunlight streaming in from the wide balcony to fill the room with a cheerful warmth.
Huo Jianan wandered through the spacious bedroom, finally stopping before the intricately carved white door leading to the balcony. Even here, her gaze could easily sweep past the ornate balustrade to take in the garden below.
She was quite satisfied with the bedroom, if only it weren’t for that slightly suggestive oil painting hanging on the wall.
The painting hung on the wall beside the bed. In it, a young woman in a white nightgown, her garment slipped to her waist, covered the provocative sight of her chest with a pale forearm. Her eyes were closed, her head tilted back as she leaned against the person behind her. The figure behind her, only half-visible, had half-lidded eyes that revealed a satisfied, almost intoxicated expression, and a crimson smear at the corner of their mouth—evidence of recent licking or gentle biting of the nape of the woman in their arms.
Huo Jianan’s face flushed crimson. Before, she wouldn’t have understood, but now, even in her ignorance, she recognized this as marking behavior—the most intimate act in the ABO world.
Seeing the Young Miss staring intently at the painting, Housekeeper He asked nervously, “Young Miss, is something wrong? Has it not been properly maintained? Should we send it for professional restoration?”
Huo Jianan thought, Ruan Nianning shares this room with me. Every morning when she opens her eyes, and every night before she falls asleep, she’s greeted by this lewd painting. How many times has she cursed me, her enemy’s daughter, for this obscenity?
Better not to further arouse her disgust.
“Housekeeper He, please take this painting to the art studio and store it away.”
Housekeeper He was startled. “Young Miss, you spent a fortune on this painting at the auction. Are you really sure you want to put it away?”
Housekeeper He clearly remembered that it was a year ago when the Young Miss had splurged at the auction and, with great excitement, declared that she would hang this painting in her bedroom after marrying Miss Ruan.
Huo Jianan showed neither reluctance nor regret. “Yes, put it away.”
Shortly after, Ruan Nianning came upstairs. “Sorry, I got a phone call that took longer than expected.” She took the wheelchair from Housekeeper He. “I’ll push it. Housekeeper He, since it’s Jianan’s discharge day today, there’s plenty to do. You can go and attend to your duties.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “That’s right. Grandmother said we’ll have a family dinner tonight to celebrate my discharge. Tell the kitchen to prepare a few extra dishes. With the Young Madam here, Housekeeper He, you needn’t worry.”
Housekeeper He smiled. “Very well, then I’ll go and attend to my duties.”
After Housekeeper He left, Ruan Nianning asked considerately, “Jianan, do you want to play games? Shall we go and have a go?”
Huo Jianan shook her head. “No, not right now. Gaming is too mentally taxing, and I’m sensitive to noise.”
Ruan Nianning’s eyes flickered with surprise for a moment before she calmly suggested, “Alright, then shall we take a stroll in the garden?”
“Sounds good, let’s go to the garden.”
Exiting the bedroom, Ruan Nianning was about to push Huo Jianan into the elevator when they encountered a young maid in the hallway. The maid had just emerged from Meng Xien’s study on the west side, carrying a dusting cloth and vacuum cleaner.
“Hello, Young Miss,” the maid greeted.
Huo Jianan nodded. This must be the maid specifically assigned to clean Meng Xien’s study. She wanted to greet the girl, but unfortunately, she didn’t recognize her.
Noticing Huo Jianan sitting stiffly in her wheelchair, maintaining a polite smile without speaking—a departure from her usual habit of striking up a conversation—Ruan Nianning took the initiative to greet the maid. “Xiao Tao, you’ve grown even prettier in these few days.” Her gaze casually swept over Huo Jianan, observing her reaction.
As expected, Huo Jianan’s eyes lit up, and she naturally followed with a greeting. “Xiao Tao.”
Ruan Nianning’s heart skipped a beat. This woman didn’t actually know Xiao Tao—the maid who had been serving the Huo family for four or five years.
The two entered the elevator and descended to the first floor.
The November weather was bitterly cold, with withered foliage and bare branches. The white yulan trees in the neighborhood stood stark and leafless, while the Huo family’s garden remained lush and vibrant. Crossing the lawn, they approached a glass sunroom nestled in a corner of the garden. Inside, a profusion of blooming flowers created a vibrant tapestry of colors, with roses in particular displaying a dazzling array of hues and forms.
Inside the greenhouse stood a table and a few chairs, where the owner could admire the flowers and enjoy tea in the warm, fragrant air.
Ruan Nianning sat in one of the chairs, her slender legs elegantly crossed. She watched Huo Jianan maneuver her wheelchair with practiced ease, enthusiastically admiring the flowers—flowers she had seen hundreds, perhaps thousands of times, and which now held no interest for her.
Her gaze remained fixed on Huo Jianan, her smile unchanged, but inside, a tidal wave of emotion surged.
This person was nothing like the Huo Jianan she had known for two years. So many small gestures—the way she scratched her head, the way she turned to smile, her gentle tone of voice, the comfortable pace of her speech—none of these had ever been part of the old Huo Jianan.
After a moment’s thought, Ruan Nianning suddenly said, “Jianan, I’m having dinner with some friends tomorrow night. I won’t be home for dinner.”
Huo Jianan was stroking a beautiful rose she didn’t recognize. The flower was enormous, its petals opulent and fragrant, clearly a rare and precious variety.
Without turning around, Huo Jianan replied cheerfully, her eyes still fixed on the exotic bloom, “Sounds good. Where are you going? If it’s good, we can go there too sometime.”
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow, suddenly remembering the phrase “like two different people.”
When Huo Jianan heard that Ruan Nianning wanted to go out to eat with friends, she became agitated and asked, “Who are they? Men or women? Alphas, Betas, or Omegas? Do you really have to go?”
This time, it seemed she was more focused on the food.
Ruan Nianning curled her lips into a smile. “Alright, if the food is good, we can go there together in the future.”
To celebrate Huo Jianan’s discharge from the hospital, dinner was exceptionally lavish, leaving Huo Jianan, who had been a working drone in her previous life, once again amazed.
Grandmother Huo had deliberately left work early today. She sat confidently at the head of the table, her naturally silver hair framing a dignified face, her outfit both stylish and of high-quality fabric. Her presence radiated the stern yet shrewd authority of a household matriarch.
“Let’s raise our glasses to celebrate Jianan’s recovery and discharge from the hospital.”
Grandmother Huo and Ruan Nianning’s glasses held red wine, while Huo Jianan’s contained juice.
After the toast, Huo Jianan dug in: giant crabs, succulent lobsters, small but exquisitely tender slices of some unknown meat, flavorful fish, and an exceptionally delicious soup.
The granddaughter seemed to have a good appetite. Unlike her usual reluctance to eat, she now eagerly accepted everything offered, relishing every bite.
Grandmother Huo smiled warmly. “Nannan, feel free to eat whatever you like.”
“Mm-hmm, I’m eating now. Grandmother, you should eat too.”
Huo Jianan picked up the serving chopsticks, intending to serve her grandmother, but hesitated, unsure what to choose. Just then, Ruan Nianning suggested, “Jianan, this seafood soup is excellent. It’s light and nourishing—perfect for Grandmother.”
“Right, right.” Huo Jianan set down the chopsticks, picked up a spoon, and ladled a bowl of soup for her grandmother. “Grandmother, please try this.”
Housekeeper He hurried forward to place the bowl in front of Grandmother Huo.
Huo Jianan gave Ruan Nianning a grateful look. “Wife, you should eat too. You’ve been working hard taking care of me at the hospital these past few days.”
Grandmother Huo glanced at the pair and said slowly, “Nianning, since you’ve married into the Huo family, you should announce your retirement from acting soon. Focus on staying home to care for Jianan and start a family.”
Huo Jianan sensed trouble. He glanced at Ruan Nianning, noticing her furrowed brow—a clear sign of displeasure.
“Grandmother, since you brought it up, I wanted to talk to you about something. Nianning and I are still young, so there’s no rush to have a child.”
Grandmother Huo chuckled. “So you’d rather enjoy your time as a couple and keep dating for a few more years?”
“Exactly!” Huo Jianan forced a sweet, ingratiating smile. “Grandmother, how do you always know exactly what I’m thinking?”
Grandmother Huo laughed. “Very well then. I won’t pressure you. Go ahead and wait two years before having a child.”
Huo Jianan: “……” Didn’t she just say she wouldn’t pressure us? Now she’s telling us to wait two years before having a child.
“Thank you, Grandmother,” Huo Jianan said cautiously, stealing a glance at her grandmother’s expression. “Grandmother, there’s something else…”
“Speak,” Grandmother Huo said, slowly savoring the seafood congee her granddaughter had served her. It had been two years since her granddaughter had taken the initiative to be this close to her.
“I don’t think there’s any need for Nianning to retire from acting. She’s so talented! As long as she avoids overly provocative roles, I don’t see why she can’t keep acting…”
Before Huo Jianan could finish, Grandmother Huo’s expression darkened. “Absolutely not! Now that she’s married into the Huo family, she must never act again.”
“But why, Grandmother? Acting isn’t illegal or immoral.”
“I said no, and that’s final!” Grandmother Huo’s face turned ashen, her gaze stern and authoritative. “If you mention this again, we’re done talking!”
Huo Jianan froze, wanting to argue. But she remembered Housekeeper He’s warning: Grandmother’s heart was fragile; she couldn’t afford to upset her.
Swallowing her words, Huo Jianan secretly glanced at Wolfie, who had remained silent throughout the conversation. Though she only saw her profile, Wolfie’s icy glare was terrifying.
Huo Jianan shivered inwardly. Oh no, Wolfie hates me even more now!
If Wolfie truly snapped, wouldn’t she impulsively end both Grandmother Huo’s and her own lives in a fit of rage, taking us both down?!
Cold sweat drenched Huo Jianan’s back. She decided to try one last time, determined to preserve her privileged life as the Huo family heiress, with its good food and comfortable lifestyle.
She turned to look at Grandmother Huo, who was watching her with a hawk-like gaze, her face etched with disappointment in her “unworthy” granddaughter.
Huo Jianan: “……”
This is so hard! Even after being reborn as a wealthy heiress, I still have to walk on eggshells.
“Grandmother, don’t be angry. It’s not a big deal. Getting upset over this is pointless.”
Seeing her granddaughter’s willingness to yield, Grandmother Huo’s expression softened slightly. She lowered her head and silently took two sips of her congee before speaking again. “Our Huo family has always been respected and influential. How could we allow our daughter-in-law to act so coquettish in public, even to be broadcast nationwide? This isn’t acting—this is a slap in the face to our entire family.”
Ruan Nianning abruptly stood up. “I’m full. Please enjoy your meal.”
Without another word, she left the dining table and went upstairs.
The housekeeper hurriedly called out, “Young Madam, the dishes haven’t all been served yet.”
Grandmother Huo sneered. “Let her go. Don’t bother with her.”
Huo Jianan, hearing this, realized they were deliberately provoking conflict. He quickly said, “Wife, are you feeling unwell? You can go upstairs and rest. I’ll join you later.”
Ruan Nianning gave a cool, indifferent hum in response before leaving.
Grandmother Huo glanced up and saw that Ruan Nianning had truly left. Turning to her grandson, she sneered, “You certainly dote on your wife.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Help! Who understands what it’s like to be caught between two Omegas, struggling to survive?!
