- Chapter 16 - I Said, I Sincerely Hope You Can Be Happy
Ruan Nianning plopped down, letting out a long sigh. Finally, she could rest and relax for a moment.
To buy these trendy pastries for Huo Jianan, she’d run all over the place, waiting in line everywhere she went. Even with her mask and sunglasses, she was still spotted by sharp-eyed passersby.
“Is that Ruan Nianning?”
“No way! Ruan Nianning’s a big star. Why would she need to stand in line herself to buy cakes?”
“Didn’t she just marry into the wealthy Huo family and become their Young Mistress a few days ago?”
“I heard the Huo Family Young Miss is crippled.”
“Ah, my beautiful goddess Consort Ning, who could captivate nations with her charm! She could have any Alpha she wanted. Why would she marry a cripple?”
Ruan Nianning’s fans affectionately called her Consort Ning, stemming from their support for her pairing with Song Shiyu, the Grand Slam Film Empress.
Despite both being Omegas, some fans insisted on imagining her as one of Song Shiyu’s harem, a sensuous Consort Ning. The two parties themselves were baffled by this, but Song Shiyu’s fans loved it, Consort Ning’s fans ate it up, and their companies happily fanned the flames. Ruan Nianning simply couldn’t be bothered to care.
In the past, Huo Jianan had often been jealous of this. It wasn’t until she had a meal with Song Shiyu and got to know her that she realized Ruan Nianning had always treated Song Shiyu like her own older sister, just as Meng Xien treated Huo Jianan. Only then did Huo Jianan finally stop being jealous and start calling Song Shiyu “Sister Song.”
“What’s wrong with being a cripple? That’s the Huo Family Young Miss, a true blue-blooded heiress! Her legs may be paralyzed, but that doesn’t mean she’s not desirable. Even though the Huo Family Young Miss is wheelchair-bound, she’s still stunningly beautiful!”
“I’ve seen photos of Huo Jianan—she’s breathtakingly gorgeous! That kind of fragile, sickly beauty… so delicate and pitiful-looking. Oh my god, she’s so my type!”
The group erupted in giggles. Ruan Nianning faintly heard them whispering, “Huo is an Alpha, so she must be on top… with that frail beauty, maybe even Consort Ning would be on top…”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
Have fans’ imaginations become this wild? They’re already envisioning my personal life?!
Surrounded by lush green plants and dotted with fresh flowers, the seating area was cleverly secluded from passersby, creating a relatively private space.
Ruan Nianning ordered a coffee at this upscale café. Before long, a server arrived with her drink, the elegant coffeeware adding to the ambiance. The distinctive aroma of coffee wafted through the air.
Ruan Nianning picked up her coffee, sniffed it, took a small sip, then slowly set the cup down, absentmindedly twirling its delicate handle.
She found herself “constantly thinking” of Huo Jianan again, involuntarily reminiscing about the woman who had changed so much after their marriage—whether it was due to amnesia or not.
Her lovely eyebrows furrowed unconsciously, a rare cloud of doubt darkening her beautiful phoenix eyes.
Ruan Nianning couldn’t stop wondering what exactly had happened to Huo Jianan. The woman had become so unlike herself.
Just then, her phone rang. Ruan Nianning picked it up, her eyes lighting up when she saw the caller ID. She gently swiped the screen to answer.
“Sister Song! When did you have time to call? Aren’t you about to start filming a new drama?”
The caller was none other than Song Shiyu, the acclaimed Film Empress and her close friend.
“I just finished a script discussion with the new drama’s director and lead actors,” the usually aloof Film Empress sounded warm and sisterly over the phone. “So, Nianning, how’s married life? Are you doing well?”
“I’m great, really. Jianan indulges me in everything. But… Jianan isn’t doing so well. She hit her head and suffered intracranial bleeding. She’s been in the hospital for a few days.”
“Is she alright? Intracranial bleeding can be serious.”
“It’s nothing. Her family is the renowned Huo family. With the best hospital and doctors, what could possibly go wrong?”
Song Shiyu detected the insincerity in her tone. “Nianning, what’s wrong? Weren’t you always eager to marry Miss Huo? I think Miss Huo’s occasional temper might simply stem from her privileged upbringing. Raised in luxury, she’s naturally particular and demanding, but that’s not meant to be malicious. Besides, she genuinely cares for you.”
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow, recalling the countless times Huo Jianan had been paranoid, hysterical, and maliciously slandered her during their two-year courtship. This went far beyond mere “Young Miss” temperament.
Ruan Nianning scoffed inwardly. “Sister Song, I’ll be honest with you. My feelings toward her and her family aren’t what you think.”
“Nianning, what’s wrong? What are you planning to do?”
Ruan Nianning paused, snapping out of a momentary daze. She quickly regained her usual cheerful demeanor. “What could I possibly do? Maybe I just got bored after a few days as a wealthy family’s young mistress. I was perfectly nice to Jianan today, running all over Changbin to buy her that trendy cake. Sister Song, are you in Changbin? I could deliver you a piece—after waiting two hours in line for it!”
Song Shiyu chuckled softly. “You want to share cake with me? Thank you! Good thing I’m not in Changbin right now.”
They laughed for a while before Song Shiyu said, “Now I’m not sure whether I should invite you to something.”
“What is it? Sister Song, just say it. We’re family.”
“The other female lead in that historical drama got into some trouble, and the production team is urgently looking for a replacement. I thought you might be perfect for the role and wanted to call you, but now that you’re married into the Huo Family, I wasn’t sure if you’d be available…”
Before Song Shiyu could finish, Ruan Nianning excitedly interrupted, “Is it Enfeoffment with the Lord?”
“Yes, that’s the one! The script is excellent, and Director Zhang is directing it again.”
“Holy cow!” Ruan Nianning gripped her phone tightly, her heart pounding faster and faster despite her attempts to calm down. “Holy cow!”
Before dinner time, Ruan Nianning returned to the hospital early with several bags of cake and pastries. She had a feeling that the pre-marriage Huo Jianan would never have agreed to let her go out and act, but the post-marriage Huo Jianan… who knew? Maybe this Huo Jianan would actually agree.
“Jianan, do you want to try this flavor again?”
In the hospital room, Huo Jianan sat in her wheelchair, being fed spoonful by spoonful by Ruan Nianning, who held a spoon. She looked like a gentle and obedient young wife doting on her partner.
“Jianan, is it delicious?” Ruan Nianning asked with the sweetest, gentlest smile. “Want to try the durian flavor again?”
Huo Jianan pushed away the spoon Ruan Nianning offered again, frowning. “Stop feeding me. I can’t eat anymore.”
“Alright then, I’ll take this to Housekeeper He and have her share it with Sister Wang, Sister Mei, and the nurses.” Ruan Nianning put down the cake, grabbed a tissue, and carefully wiped the corner of Huo Jianan’s mouth.
Her soft fingers accidentally brushed against Huo Jianan’s full lips, the pinky fingertip gently hooking at the corner of her mouth, sending a peculiar ripple across her snow-white skin. Huo Jianan flushed and turned her face away. “I… I can do it myself.”
Ruan Nianning noticed that Huo Jianan had become increasingly shy since her marriage, blushing easily at the slightest suggestive gesture.
This new, more vulnerable Huo Jianan was far more lively and interesting than before.
Ruan Nianning cleared her throat. “Jianan, I need to talk to you about something.”
“Go ahead,” Huo Jianan replied, wiping the corner of her mouth with a tissue.
“Did you mean what you said yesterday?”
“What was that?”
“That you’d let me keep acting?”
Ruan Nianning stared intently at the woman in the wheelchair, holding her breath, afraid Huo Jianan might take back her words.
“Yeah, I did,” Huo Jianan said, carefully wiping her mouth. “As long as it’s not too explicit, you can go ahead and act.”
Smack! A loud kiss landed on her cheek.
Ruan Nianning wrapped her arms around Huo Jianan’s neck, beaming. “Thank you!”
Seeing her so happy, Huo Jianan smiled along.
Wolfie was still in her twenties, full of youthful vivacity and passion, craving freedom like all girls her age.
I’ve finally done something that truly makes Wolfie happy.
“But what about Grandmother? Will she agree?”
“I’ll talk to her. My support isn’t just talk.” Huo Jianan smiled confidently. “Don’t worry. I’ll persuade her. You’ll definitely be able to act.”
For the first time, Ruan Nianning looked at Huo Jianan up close without resentment, and she discovered how beautiful her eyes were—like the sea, calm and deep, especially when she smiled, shimmering with winter sunlight.
Huo Jianan didn’t eat much for dinner, having indulged in cake that afternoon and not feeling hungry. All the delicious food on the table went to Ruan Nianning.
As Huo Jianan listened to her talk about filming, she kept serving her favorite dishes.
“How did you know I like peas?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“Whenever I put peas in your bowl, you eat them the fastest. You must really like them.”
Ruan Nianning stared blankly for a moment, blinking. When did Huo Jianan get so clever?
Seeing her dazed expression and her slightly puffed cheeks, adorably like a little hamster, Huo Jianan added another piece of chicken broth radish to her plate.
“Wolfie, eating some radish in winter is good for you.”
Ruan Nianning turned her head. “What did you just call me? ‘Wolfie’?”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Oh no! I got distracted by her cuteness and slipped up.
“Mmm, you look especially cute when you eat, like a fluffy little wolf pup, Wolfie.”
Ruan Nianning, with a piece of radish in her mouth, didn’t understand. “Why does it have to be ‘Wolfie’?”
Huo Jianan, serving her soup while her mind raced, improvised quickly.
“Calling you ‘Kitty’ is too ordinary, ‘Pup’ sounds a bit too clingy, ‘Balls’ doesn’t fit your figure, and ‘Fuzzball’ lacks the right aura. ‘Wolfie’ suits you best. Just imagine a pack leader in the snow, with sleek, glossy fur radiating power. The way you stand exudes a regal presence, a sense of ruling the world—doesn’t that perfectly match the role you’re playing? If you didn’t possess that cold, domineering aura of a pack leader, Sister Song wouldn’t have invited you, would she?”
Huo Jianan, on the spot, spun a convincing tale. Never before in her life had she been so eloquent.
Ruan Nianning nodded in agreement and swallowed the radish. “I like ‘Wolfie’ too. It’s better than ‘Kitty’ or ‘Balls.’ Let’s go with Ruan Wolfie.”
Huo Jianan held out the bowl of soup, beaming. “Here, Wolfie, have some soup.”
After dinner, while the Young Madam was bathing the Young Miss, Sister Wang and Sister Mei took out the cake Ruan Nianning had given them and began to eat it.
“This is delicious!” Sister Wang exclaimed. “No wonder the Young Madam said she waited in line for two hours.”
“Delicious…” Sister Mei agreed. “This is what real food tastes like! That bee propolis package this morning was outrageously expensive! I thought it must be amazing, but my goodness, how could something be so unpalatable? Not even pigs would eat that!”
“Who knows?” Sister Wang shrugged. “We can’t understand the tastes of the wealthy.”
In the bathroom, Wolfie finally didn’t turn into a lecherous lone wolf to harass Huo Jianan. Instead, she earnestly helped her wash up, then quickly washed herself. After drying off, she made a flurry of phone calls to Film Empress Song, her agent, her assistant, and so on.
Huo Jianan was thoroughly sidelined.
Watching Wolfie, beaming with joy and brimming with energy, Huo Jianan smiled naturally, her eyes sparkling like fresh snow. A confident beauty radiated from her, making her dazzlingly alluring, like a blazing flame, more captivating than ever before.
Huo Jianan smiled inwardly. She could see that, at this moment, Wolfie had set aside her hatred, was relaxed and full of energy—this was the real Ruan Nianning.
“Yeah, it should be fine. My family agreed, so joining the team on schedule shouldn’t be a problem.” Ruan Nianning held her phone to her ear, her other hand brushing stray strands of hair from her face.
Sensing a gaze that had been fixed on her for some time, Ruan Nianning turned around.
Huo Jianan lay on the bed, smiling at her without any trace of desire, only pure appreciation. Her gaze was as if they were meeting for the first time.
Ruan Nianning waved a hand in front of Huo Jianan’s face. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
Huo Jianan startled, her face flushing crimson, the heat spreading to her ears.
Oh no! I was caught staring at Wolfie!
“N-no reason,” Huo Jianan stammered, quickly lying back down. “I’m going to sleep.”
Ruan Nianning’s lips curved. “I’ll talk to you later,” she said hurriedly into the phone. “Let me know if anything changes.” She hung up, pulled back the quilt, and climbed into bed.
The lights went out, and the darkness that flooded the room brought a serene tranquility to the hospital ward.
Huo Jianan lay flat on her back. After relaxing, the heat on her face had subsided.
In the darkness, a soft hand reached out from beneath the quilt and took hers, its delicate smoothness sending a shiver through her. The warmth that had just retreated from her cheeks surged back.
“Are you asleep?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“No.”
“Jianan, why are you willing to let me go act in that movie?”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Have you forgotten? I told you I sincerely hope you find happiness.”
She felt a sudden sharp pain at her wrist as the hand tightened, nails digging into her flesh.
Huo Jianan stifled a cry.
But then the grip slowly released, and the person leaned closer, pressing their whole body against her arm like a soft wolf pup.
Huo Jianan curled her lips into a smile and patted the hand clutching her arm. “Sleep, Wolfie.”
Ruan Nianning closed her eyes, a smile playing on her lips. “Mm.”
******
Wolfie was kissing Bunny again!
Bunny: “Hey, Wife, why are you kissing me again?”
Wolfie: “Because I’m happy~~~”
