- Chapter 15 - My Wife is Stalking Me
Early the next morning, Grandmother Huo came to the hospital as usual to check on her.
Doctor Zhou changed her bandages. “The wound is small and healing well. Miss Huo has recovered nicely over the past two days. We’ll observe you one more day today. If everything goes well after removing the bandages tomorrow, you can be discharged.”
Huo Jianan cheered inwardly. Yes!
After Doctor Zhou left, Grandmother Huo said, “Nannan, I need to go to the company. Come downstairs with me.”
“Okay, Grandmother.” Huo Jianan turned to Ruan Nianning. “Wife, I’ll take Grandmother downstairs. You can eat breakfast first.”
Ruan Nianning sat obediently at the table, smiling faintly. “I’ll wait for you to come back and eat together.”
Housekeeper He pushed Huo Jianan’s wheelchair, and they went down the elevator with Grandmother Huo. In the underground parking garage, not far from the elevator, a Rolls-Royce was parked.
The driver hurriedly opened the car door when he saw Grandmother Huo emerge. But she didn’t get in right away. Turning to Huo Jianan, she asked, “Nannan, Sister Meng told me you want to work at the company?”
“Yes, Grandmother. I want to work at the company.”
“Are you serious about this, or just on a whim?” Grandmother Huo looked at her, her expression stern, her gaze devoid of the warmth a grandmother usually shows her granddaughter—cold and unyielding as a block of ice.
“If this is just a passing fancy, you’d be better off staying home, playing and having fun with your wife. The Huo family’s success today is the culmination of generations of effort. I’d rather you enjoy the comforts of being a major shareholder than risk ruining the company. Sister Meng is already doing an excellent job; with her at the helm, I have no concerns.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Well, that’s a harsh blow before she’s even begun. It seems Grandmother has already chosen Sister Meng as her successor, and sees her own granddaughter as a delicate porcelain doll—sensitive, fragile, and unfit for such responsibilities.
“Think it through carefully, then come back and tell me.” Grandmother Huo slipped into the car. The chauffeur closed the door and swiftly moved to the driver’s seat.
The grandmother lowered the window, her tone softening slightly. “Has Nianning been taking good care of you these past few days in the hospital?”
“Yes, Nianning has been very attentive. She helps me bathe and even turns me over at night.”
“You’re just like your mother, sometimes too naive and easily deceived by appearances.”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. Could Grandmother have noticed something?
“Alright, I’m off. If I’m discharged tomorrow, let’s celebrate with dinner tonight.”
“Okay, Grandmother.”
Huo Jianan refused to eat another honeycomb bun. “Wife, can I have some of your whole grain bread?”
“Why? Is your honeycomb bun not good enough?”
Huo Jianan made a disgusted face. “It’s the most disgusting bun I’ve ever tasted, and it’s so expensive too!”
Her insistence on how awful it was only piqued Ruan Nianning’s curiosity. “Is it really that bad?”
“So bad it makes me question my life. Try it yourself if you don’t believe me.” Huo Jianan grabbed a piece of her wife’s whole grain bread and started eating it with milk.
Like a curious cat, Ruan Nianning stared at the honeycomb bun on the plate. Finally, she couldn’t resist taking a small bite, but didn’t get any filling. She took another bite, and the honeycomb flavor emerged. There was a faint sweetness, but then a sharp spiciness and a hint of bitterness flooded her mouth.
“This… this is simply unpalatable. Compared to this, whole grain bread tastes like a delicacy.”
Ruan Nianning frowned deeply, forcing down the bee propolis ball. Seeing Huo Jianan about to eat her vegetable salad, she snatched it away. “Don’t eat mine! Go eat yours. There’s still another bee propolis ball waiting for you.”
Huo Jianan paused, then turned to Housekeeper He. “Housekeeper He, have you eaten yet? I’m full today, so you can have this bee propolis ball.”
Housekeeper He replied, “Give it to Sister Wang and Sister Mei instead. They haven’t tried it yet.”
“Good idea. If I’d known earlier, I would have given them both balls,” Huo Jianan said. “Housekeeper He, once I’m discharged tomorrow, I think we should diversify our breakfast menu at home. We should have steamed buns, soup dumplings, fried dough sticks, sesame balls, soy sauce flatbread, wontons, noodles, oatmeal porridge, and steam some corn, sweet potatoes, and taro. We should rotate them.”
Housekeeper He nodded while taking notes. “Noted.”
After the meal, Huo Jianan said, “Wife, you don’t need to stay at the hospital just to keep me company. If you want to go shopping, feel free. Housekeeper He and the others will look after me.”
Ruan Nianning found this a little odd. “Don’t you want me to keep you company?”
Of course I want you to keep me company, Huo Jianan thought. But I know you couldn’t stand facing the enemy’s wife all day. I’m worried you’ll end up in a bad mood.
“But I want to try this trendy cake and that trendy pastry. I want to go out and buy them, but I’m afraid Grandma will find out and scold me for leaving the hospital. Wife, could you bring them back for me?”
Ruan Nianning glanced at her. As long as Huo Jianan’s requests weren’t unreasonable, she naturally indulged her. “Sure, whatever you want, I’ll get it for you.”
However, the locations were scattered all over the city—some in the east, some in the far north, and some that didn’t even open until 11 a.m. Add to that the inevitable lines, and it would easily take most of the day.
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow. It seemed Huo Jianan was trying to keep her busy.
Before long, it was almost nine o’clock. Huo Jianan remembered her appointment with Doctor Jiang from yesterday. “Wife, when the driver comes, I won’t see you off. I have to go for a check-up.”
“Would you like me to accompany you?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“No need. Housekeeper He will be with me,” Huo Jianan replied.
Ruan Nianning lowered her gaze, certain that Huo Jianan had something to do and wanted to avoid her.
As soon as Huo Jianan left, Ruan Nianning followed. She watched Housekeeper He push Huo Jianan into the elevator and saw it stop on the third floor. Ruan Nianning immediately dashed up the fire stairs, her high heels clicking against the steps as she hurried to the third floor. Finally, she caught sight of Housekeeper He’s back in the corridor.
Ruan Nianning’s gaze fixed on the person in the wheelchair, her chest heaving slightly. She couldn’t tell if it was from rushing up the stairs or the guilt of stalking Huo Jianan. Either way, she’d somehow thrust herself back into the role of a clandestine spy from a Cold War drama.
The absurdity of the situation struck her. Why not just ask Housekeeper He about Huo Jianan’s appointment later? she thought. Why resort to this sneaky stalking?
She glanced at the corridor sign: this wing housed the orthopedics department.
Is Huo Jianan here for a leg check-up?
As she pondered this, she saw Housekeeper He push Huo Jianan into Consulting Room Three. The door closed behind them.
Ruan Nianning hid near the fire exit, her head tilted sideways, her long hair cascading in loose waves that partially obscured her face.
Two nurses walked by, glancing at her and whispering among themselves. “Is that Ruan Nianning? Her profile looks just like her!”
“It can’t be. Celebrities always wear sunglasses and masks when they go out.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
After the nurses passed, Ruan Nianning quickly slipped past the door to Consulting Room Three, glancing at the information plaque outside: Dr. Jiang Shumin.
Huo Jianan, who had just finished her examination, slowly sat up from the medical equipment. Dr. Jiang Shumin moved to help her down.
Huo Jianan smiled faintly and declined the offer. “Thank you, but I can manage on my own.” She picked up her phone, drove her wheelchair up to the equipment, adjusted its height, and with a smooth motion, transferred herself into the chair.
“Dr. Jiang, will I ever be able to stand again?”
After reviewing the report, Dr. Jiang said regretfully, “Miss Huo, to be honest, you’ve missed the optimal window for treatment and rehabilitation.”
Huo Jianan froze, looking at Dr. Jiang in confusion. She couldn’t understand how the Huo Family’s immense wealth could have allowed them to miss the best treatment time.
“It’s possible that for some reason, Miss Huo, you didn’t receive the most advanced medical treatment at the time. According to your medical records, it’s been four years since the abnormalities in your legs first appeared. While regaining your ability to walk isn’t entirely hopeless, the treatment will be a significant challenge and will be very difficult.”
Huo Jianan said, “I’m not afraid of hardship! As long as I can stand up again, I’m willing to face any challenge!”
Jiang Shumin was slightly taken aback. She remembered the Director specifically instructing her when introducing Miss Huo as a patient: “The patient is quite self-conscious and extremely afraid of pain, with an intense fear of it. According to her grandmother, she was stranded alone in the wilderness for two days and two nights before being rescued, which may have caused her immense suffering during that time. We can’t rule out the possibility of PTSD. When treating her, we should use the gentlest methods possible to avoid upsetting her emotionally.”
The Miss Huo before her, though confined to a wheelchair, sat with her back ramrod straight. Her eyes were bright and spirited, filled with unwavering determination and strength.
Jiang Shumin found it difficult to reconcile this woman with the image of a patient disabled for four years, plagued by self-doubt and terrified of pain.
“Alright, let’s give it a try. I’ll develop a treatment plan for Miss Huo using the latest research from both domestic and international sources.”
Huo Jianan beamed. “Thank you! Thank you, Doctor Jiang!”
Jiang Shumin smiled faintly. “The treatment process may be quite painful. Are you sure you’re okay with that, Miss Huo?”
Huo Jianan nodded without hesitation. “I’m fine. I can handle it. As long as it cures my legs, even if it means scraping the bone to remove the poison, I’ll endure it.”
Jiang Shumin chuckled softly. “It won’t come to that. We’ll meet again the day after tomorrow to finalize the treatment plan, and then we’ll begin.”
By the time Huo Jianan left Doctor Jiang’s office, it was almost noon. Housekeeper He pushed her back to her ward. The hospital corridor bustled with activity: some people were on phone calls, others hurried past, and a few sat quietly in the waiting area.
Bright sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating half of Huo Jianan’s figure. Her slightly pale complexion appeared even fairer under the reflected light, giving her an aura of delicate beauty.
Passersby couldn’t help but glance at the woman in the wheelchair. Her features were strikingly refined and her presence was captivating—she must be an Alpha. Yet, her frail, vulnerable demeanor also suggested the delicate charm of an Omega, evoking sympathy and tenderness.
Such a beauty, dazzling like flames yet tender as melting snow— an alpha with an omega’s grace— is a rarest of earthly beauties. Who could resist stealing a second glance?
Huo Jianan was in high spirits, her bright eyes gentle and pure. “Housekeeper He,” she said, “did you know? I might be able to stand again.”
Housekeeper He was overjoyed. “Really, Young Miss? That’s wonderful! The Old Madam will be thrilled— absolutely delighted!”
“Don’t tell Grandmother yet, or Sister Meng, or the Young Madam. I want to surprise them.”
Housekeeper He hesitated. “Are you sure we shouldn’t tell them?”
“If we tell them now, there won’t be a surprise. I want to stand before them myself and tell them in person when my legs are fully healed.”
Housekeeper He imagined the scene: the Old Madam would be overjoyed, Miss Meng and the Young Madam equally thrilled!
“So, Housekeeper He, please don’t tell them, okay? Otherwise, the surprise won’t be as special.”
Huo Jianan looked at Housekeeper He with pleading eyes, her innocent gaze nearly melting her heart.
Who could resist such a look?
Housekeeper He hesitated for only two seconds before relenting. “Very well, Young Miss. We won’t tell them for now.”
“Haha, thank you, Housekeeper He!”
Housekeeper He smiled warmly. It was rare to see the Young Miss so cheerful, and it made her happy as well.
She pushed Huo Jianan into the elevator, and they went up to the seventh floor. After exiting, they cheerfully walked down the corridor toward the hospital room. Halfway there, they encountered a man in a white coat, his temples streaked with gray—probably in his fifties.
Housekeeper He stopped and greeted him first. “Hello, Director Zhang!”
It was Director Zhang.
Huo Jianan echoed the greeting.
“Ah, Miss Huo! How are you feeling? You look much better.”
After a brief exchange, Director Zhang reminded Housekeeper He before leaving, “Is Old Madam Huo doing well? Given her age and her heart condition, it’s crucial to avoid excitement and anger. As long as she keeps her emergency medication with her at all times, she should be fine.”
“Thank you, Director Zhang,” Housekeeper He replied.
Watching Director Zhang’s retreating figure, Huo Jianan asked softly, “Housekeeper He, does Grandmother really have heart problems?”
Housekeeper He sighed. “Madam originally didn’t want me to tell you, but since Director Zhang has already mentioned it, I can’t keep it from you. Last year, Madam came to the hospital for a check-up after experiencing chest pain and was diagnosed with heart disease. Director Zhang advised her to avoid excessive stress and prescribed medication to take when she felt unwell, along with an emergency drug to keep with her at all times. Madam was afraid you’d worry and told us not to tell you.”
At this point, Housekeeper He glanced at Young Miss Huo Jianan, hesitated for a few seconds, and finally added, “Last time you went on a hunger strike to protest the marriage to the Young Madam and had that big argument with Madam, did you know that Madam had a heart attack that night? She only survived because she had the emergency medication.”
“Young Miss,” Housekeeper He said nervously, carefully choosing her words, “could you… please not argue with Madam like that in the future?” She stared intently at Huo Jianan. “Madam only has you as her only granddaughter. She cares more about you than anyone in the world and wants to fulfill all your wishes. But Madam has always been so strong-willed, and she’s already over 70 years old…”
Huo Jianan nodded solemnly. “I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Housekeeper He was somewhat surprised but also deeply relieved. She had expected the Young Miss to throw a tantrum, to furiously pinch her own arm and wail, “It’s not my fault! Why is this my fault too?”
“Young Miss, you’ve really changed a lot since your marriage.”
“Really? How so?”
“It’s like you grew up overnight—matured and became a completely different person.”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Yes, people have to grow up eventually. It’s not surprising.”
Just like the Earth’s rotation or rain falling from the sky, some things are inevitable. Whether you grow up or not isn’t a choice you get to make.
*******
Ruan Nianning: Huo Jianan is definitely hiding something from me. I’m secretly stalking her.
