- Chapter 13 - Ruan Nianning's Punishment
Just before 9 p.m., Meng Xien came to visit as expected. Though tired from a long day at work, her makeup remained impeccable, and her suit jacket was impeccably neat.
Huo Jianan, who had a keen sense of smell, detected the scent of alcohol on her. “Sister Meng, have you been drinking?”
“Yes, I had dinner with a client and had a few drinks. I excused myself early.”
Huo Jianan turned to Housekeeper He. “Since Sister Meng has been drinking, let’s skip the sweet wine balls tonight. How about some wontons instead?”
“Very well, Young Miss. Freshly made wontons will be ready quickly.” Housekeeper He went to the kitchen to instruct the chef to prepare the late-night snack.
Meng Xien leaned down and patted Huo Jianan’s head, smiling warmly. “Little Nan has grown so gentle since getting married. Is your headache better today?”
Huo Jianan hadn’t been patted on the head like this since childhood, and she felt a little self-conscious. “It’s much better. I even went for a walk in the garden today.”
“Haha, I heard Aunt Xu say that the Lei family called to apologize. Little Nan, you’re quite something. You’ve left them speechless.”
“What’s so impressive about it? They were the ones being unreasonable first. If they play dirty, I’ll play dirty too. Who’s afraid of whom?”
Meng Xien smiled and patted Huo Jianan’s head, clearly proud of her behavior today. “Well done. People like that need a lesson to learn proper social etiquette.”
Huo Jianan grinned brightly. “I only had the guts to do it because I knew Sister Meng and Grandmother were backing me.”
“I heard the oranges were so sour and bitter that Third Master Lei cursed his son out again. I bet none of them will want to eat oranges ever again.”
This made both Huo Jianan and Meng Xien laugh.
“Jianan, you’ve changed so much,” Meng Xien said. “I’m impressed. You would never have stood up to a stranger in public before. You would just silently stew in your anger and secretly wipe away your tears.”
Huo Jianan’s smile froze, her heart skipping a beat. Oh no! I blew my act!
“Sister Meng, I’m married now, a grown adult in every sense. I can’t just keep acting the same way I used to. I want to change.”
Meng Xien nodded. “Aunt Xu would be so proud to see you like this today.”
Ruan Nianning, sitting nearby, listened to their cheerful conversation while pretending to scroll through her phone, secretly astonished. The Lei Family? A lesson? Something must have happened while she was away, something serious enough to involve Xu Weiyi. Yet Huo Jianan hadn’t mentioned a single word to her.
Ruan Nianning lowered her head, her clasped fingers tightening into a tense grip.
Before, Huo Jianan used to tell her everything: how she’d executed a flawless maneuver to defeat a game’s boss, how her right eye had swollen just a little in the morning, even how she’d accidentally scratched her skin with her fingernail. She’d share every detail, exhaustively. But today, after returning to the hospital and experiencing this incident, Huo Jianan hadn’t told her a single thing.
Ruan Nianning felt that the married Huo Jianan was becoming increasingly inscrutable and unsettling. She hated this feeling of losing control.
When the wontons were served, Huo Jianan asked, “What filling is it?”
“Chickweed and meat filling. Miss Meng and the Young Miss both like it.”
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment, then suddenly remembered something. “What about the Young Madam? Does she like it?”
Housekeeper He paused, then her face flushed with remorse. “I’m sorry, Young Miss. I haven’t even asked the Young Madam’s preferences.”
“It’s alright,” Huo Jianan said, unwilling to embarrass the loyal housekeeper who had served the Huo family for years. “I don’t know her preferences either. But since we’re family now, it’s good to get to know each other better.”
“Yes, Young Miss is right,” Housekeeper He replied, her face burning crimson as she mentally berated herself a thousand times.
Huo Jianan turned to Ruan Nianning with a smile. “Wife, put away your phone. Today’s snack is cabbage meat dumplings. I don’t know if you like them, but let’s join Sister Meng for some late-night refreshments.”
Ruan Nianning paused, then set down her phone and sat at the table. Though she had married into the Huo family, she knew Grandmother Huo didn’t truly accept her as family.
“Wife, do you eat cabbage? It’s a wild vegetable with a very fragrant taste.”
Ruan Nianning nodded. “Yes, I do.”
Meng Xien chimed in with a smile, “That’s right. If you have any dietary restrictions, just let Housekeeper He know. Don’t be shy. We understand celebrities have specific dietary needs. If you’re worried about gaining weight, just eat a few less.”
Her voice was gentle, her demeanor refined, her smile radiant, and her appearance striking—all the hallmarks of a quintessential alpha. A top-tier alpha like her could undoubtedly captivate countless omegas.
As expected, Ruan Nianning smiled politely at her, her expression both courteous and warmly approachable. “Thank you, Sister Meng. I’ll just have a few fewer.”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. Ruan Nianning had only given her a two-word response, yet she’d said so much to Sister Meng.
Recalling how, in the original story, the “good sister” on her left and the “good wife” on her right would team up against her—and how some even rooted for their pairing—Huo Jianan shuddered inwardly.
While the situation remained unformed, she needed to nip this budding rivalry in the bud.
“Wife, let me serve you,” Huo Jianan insisted, ladling four wontons into Ruan Nianning’s bowl. When she moved to add more, Ruan Nianning hurriedly said, “That’s enough, thank you.”
Meanwhile, Housekeeper He had finished serving Meng Xien a bowl.
“Wife, it’s a little hot. Be careful you don’t burn your mouth,” Huo Jianan said, subtly shifting her body closer to Ruan Nianning as she spoke.
“Wife, would you like some vinegar?” Huo Jianan seized another opportunity to inch closer.
She had to protect her wife, eliminating any possibility that would make her head “turn green” with jealousy.
Seeing her like this, Ruan Nianning felt her previous resentment and disgust fade, replaced by a sense of calm. She lowered her head and took a slow sip of soup. “No need for vinegar. It’s delicious just as it is.”
Meng Xien watched the two, now practically sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, and chuckled inwardly. “Jianan, I know you’re clingy with your wife, but couldn’t you save the affectionate displays until after I leave?”
Huo Jianan flushed and straightened her posture. “No, nothing like that.”
After the late-night meal, Meng Xien stood to take her leave. “Jianan, I’m going on a business trip for a week—Country A and Country F. I won’t be able to visit you during that time.”
“That’s okay. I’m almost fully recovered and will be discharged in a couple of days.” Huo Jianan gazed at Meng Xien, impeccably dressed in a suit and leather shoes, radiating vitality. She admired the young woman’s impressive career: being her grandmother’s trusted assistant, traveling the world, navigating high-end business events, and closing billion-yuan deals with ease. It was a professional life she could only dream of.
“Sister Meng, once I’m better, I want to work at the company just like you. Is that possible?”
Meng Xien paused, clearly surprised. “You want to join the company?”
“Yes, I’m also a daughter of the Huo family, and I want to contribute to the company. Even though I don’t know anything right now, I have to take the first step.”
Meng Xien was even more surprised. She stared at Huo Jianan for a few seconds, then gently patted her head. “You’ve truly grown up. I’ll talk to Aunt Xu about this.”
“Thank you, Sister Meng!” Huo Jianan smiled happily.
Although Meng Xien was portrayed as a villainous mastermind in the book, Huo Jianan could sense that at this moment, Meng Xien genuinely treated her like a younger sister. That kind of genuine care and affection couldn’t be faked or pretended.
That evening, Ruan Nianning once again helped Huo Jianan bathe.
The bathroom was filled with steam. Today, Ruan Nianning was wearing even less than yesterday: a tank top and a pair of black panties. The black fabric swayed before Huo Jianan’s eyes. She glanced down briefly before quickly raising her gaze, only to accidentally meet Ruan Nianning’s cleavage. She closed her eyes.
Ruan Nianning was increasingly baffled by her. At this moment, Huo Jianan was so prim and proper, acting as if they weren’t lovers but strangers forced to be together. Yet just earlier during their late-night snack, she had clung to Ruan Nianning like a clingy child, afraid of anyone looking at her or speaking to her. She even asked if Ruan Nianning wanted more vinegar, yet she herself was dripping with jealousy.
That’s Sister Meng, practically her own sister. What’s there to be jealous of?
“Raise your hand.”
Huo Jianan obediently raised her hand, only to feel someone’s hand brush against her softness.
She gasped, her eyes flying open. “You! You…”
Seeing her startled, deer-like eyes, Ruan Nianning suddenly felt mischievous. She pressed Huo Jianan against the wall and kissed her.
The shower spray quickly drenched Ruan Nianning’s hair and clothes. Warm droplets trickled down her hair to her back, flowing along the curves of her spine. Teasingly, Ruan Nianning deepened the kiss, refusing to let go of the sweetness in Huo Jianan’s mouth. She pinned her firmly against the wall, letting the hot water cascade over her.
How had she never noticed before? Huo Jianan was so easy to push around. A single kiss left her flustered and helpless, vulnerable and pitiful.
The more she reacted like this, the more Ruan Nianning wanted to tease her, kissing her with increasing boldness.
“Mmm…” The steam-filled bathroom was already low on oxygen, and with Ruan Nianning’s lips pressed firmly to hers, Huo Jianan felt suffocating. Tears threatened to spill as her legs went weak. She had been leaning against the shower bar, but when she finally freed a hand to push Wolfie away, it was swiftly caught. Ruan Nianning pinned her against the wall, her entire body pressing down as she kissed her relentlessly.
Help! Weren’t omegas supposed to be delicate doves, soft and easily bullied?
Why was the omega before her so different?!
This wasn’t some pure, harmless little bunny or a soft, clinging dove—it was a frustrated, lust-driven wolf!
Huo Jianan couldn’t push Wolfie away, and to maintain her act, she couldn’t really call out to Housekeeper He and the others for help. After all, this “wolf” was the wife she’d gone to such lengths to marry, even staging a hunger strike to win her.
Huo Jianan felt like she was suffocating, literally being kissed to death. As she struggled, making muffled sounds, Wolfie finally released her.
Panting, Wolfie demanded, “Why didn’t you tell me about what happened during the day?”
“Huff… what happened?”
“The Lei Family.” Ruan Nianning lifted Huo Jianan’s chin. “Didn’t we agree that you’d tell me everything? Why didn’t you tell me about what happened today?”
Huo Jianan wanted to cry, but no tears came. “It wasn’t a big deal.”
Without another word, Ruan Nianning kissed her again. “Who said only big deals need to be reported? Hiding things from me is wrong.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Not only was her wife a wolf, but a possessive, controlling wolf.
Just as Huo Jianan was about to lose her breath, Ruan Nianning finally relented, allowing her to collapse against her wife’s body and gasp for air.
“I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you!” Huo Jianan murmured weakly, her head drooping against her wife’s slender shoulders. “Can I tell you after I finish washing? It’s too stuffy in here—I can’t breathe.”
“No, tell me now!”
Huo Jianan gritted her teeth in resentment, vowing silently, Just wait until my legs are better. I’ll make you pay for this!
“Then can I talk while I wash? I want to get out of here soon.”
Ruan Nianning agreed, and only then did she resume washing her.
“It’s not a big deal. I was just walking through the garden today and saw a man climbing a tree to pick tangerines…”
As Ruan Nianning listened, she continued to scrub and massage her. Hearing about the arrogant villain getting his comeuppance seemed to lift her spirits, and by the end, she was chuckling heartily.
“Weren’t you afraid he’d really hit you?”
“If he really cracked my skull open, it wouldn’t be eating tangerines—it’d be getting buried in them.”
Ruan Nianning laughed so hard she nearly shook herself apart. This was perhaps the happiest and most relaxed day she’d spent with Huo Jianan since they’d been together.
“Seeing you laugh so much, should I go ask the Lei Family for a sour tangerine to give you a taste?”
“Why did you give me a sour tangerine? I wasn’t being arrogant or demanding to hit you.” Ruan Nianning’s eyes sparkled with amusement, her nose wrinkled slightly, and her skin glowed with a rosy, youthful flush.
Huo Jianan smiled warmly. In that moment, Ruan Nianning truly looked like a girl—a beautiful and adorable omega.
“But you bullied me earlier,” Huo Jianan said, tilting her head with a mischievous grin. “You didn’t hit me, but you bit me—and in a very improper way.”
Ruan Nianning’s face flushed crimson. She wiped the water droplets from her legs, reached over, and gave Huo Jianan’s bottom a playful pinch. “Stop talking nonsense! Saying things like that is what’s improper.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
Well, well. Wolfie had turned the tables on her.
After bathing, Huo Jianan wrapped herself in a towel, picked up her underwear and sleep robe, and said, “Wife, you don’t need to see me out. You’re all wet. Finish your bath properly and I’ll go by myself. Don’t worry, I won’t fall. I’ve gotten quite good at getting in and out of bed now.”
With that, Huo Jianan maneuvered her wheelchair to the bathroom door, opened it, and rolled out, thoughtfully closing the door behind her.
Ruan Nianning stared blankly at the door that had swung open and shut. After a long pause, she suddenly realized she was smiling. Startled, she stepped under the showerhead and turned on the water.
Water cascaded down from above, drenching everything. It washed away the sweat and tension from her face, along with the rare smile in those phoenix eyes.
