- Chapter 11 - The Cripple with a Loose Screw
After breakfast, Ruan Nianning put on makeup and changed her clothes. Soon, the driver arrived at the hospital.
She picked up her bag and waved cheerfully at Huo Jianan. “Sweetie, I’m going out. Make sure you eat properly at noon.”
Huo Jianan lifted her head, her eyes crinkling into a smile. “Got it, Wife.”
As soon as Ruan Nianning left, Huo Jianan’s smile collapsed. She leaned back comfortably in her wheelchair—finally, she didn’t have to act anymore.
She carefully maneuvered her wheelchair into the room and settled in front of the window to bask in the sun. The November wind carried a biting chill.
With Wolfie gone, she felt a sense of relief.
Now, pretending to be the Huo Family Young Miss, there were still many mysteries to unravel. When and how did the original girl’s mother die? What was Meng Xien’s relationship with the Huo Family? Was she adopted? When did this happen?
And then there was Ruan Nianning. When did she begin her revenge campaign? When did she ally with Meng Xien?
Most importantly, what exactly was this grudge?
All of this needed to be figured out.
“Young Miss, the weather’s getting cold. Be careful not to catch a cold,” Housekeeper He said, closing the window and draping a warm blanket over her legs.
“Thank you,” Huo Jianan said, grateful to the devoted housekeeper. “Housekeeper He, how long have you been with the Huo family?”
Housekeeper He found the question somewhat unusual. The Young Miss hadn’t been back at the Huo residence for long—just over two years—but she was so reserved and quiet that she rarely initiated conversation, let alone showed interest in others’ lives. Everyone in the Huo household knew that the Young Miss’s two greatest passions were video games and her beloved treasure, the superstar Ruan Nianning.
“Over twenty years,” Housekeeper He replied. “My mother was also the Huo family’s housekeeper. When she retired due to age, Madam asked me to take over her position.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “Your Grandmother must have trusted you and your mother deeply.”
Housekeeper He smiled proudly. “Madam has always been kind to us, so we naturally strive to serve the Huo family well.”
“When did Sister Meng come to our family?”
Housekeeper He chuckled. “Why the sudden interest in family history today, Young Miss?”
Huo Jianan felt a flutter of nervousness, but her expression remained calm as she lowered her head and stroked the soft blanket. “Oh, it’s nothing. I just remembered. I wonder if Sister Meng will visit me today.”
The original Young Miss had been very close to Meng Xien, treating her like a sister and sharing everything with her.
“She’ll definitely come. Miss Meng is very busy, so she’ll come after work. If she doesn’t have any engagements, she’ll probably arrive around 8 or 9 PM. Would you like to stay and have a late-night snack with her? I can make your favorite sweet rice wine balls.”
“Sounds good.”
“Madam is also very happy to see you two so close,” Housekeeper He said with a pleased expression. “Miss Meng’s mother, Madam Meng, passed away when she was very young. Her family and Madam’s family have been close for generations. After Madam married into the Huo family, Madam Meng often visited. Later, she married the third son of the Meng family. A few years after that, something happened in the Meng family—what exactly, I’m not sure—but Madam Meng ended up starting her own business. Old Madam, who had been married into the Huo family for many years and was already managing the household, gave her a substantial sum of money as startup capital. Gradually, Madam Meng’s company began to prosper.
“A few years later, Miss Meng was born. Madam Meng was already in her late thirties when she gave birth to her, but the delivery went smoothly. The Meng couple was overjoyed, and Madam was delighted as well. At that time, Miss Zhujun—your mother—used to hold Miss Meng and wouldn’t let her go, saying she wanted to have a baby just like her someday.”
“My mother told me about this. She said Miss Meng’s mother was a very gentle and knowledgeable woman, and Madam was also a refined and well-bred lady. The two were very close.”
“Then why did our family end up adopting Sister Meng?”
“Later, Miss Meng’s mother fell ill and passed away. Miss Meng’s mother became deeply saddened by this and soon fell ill herself. On her deathbed, she entrusted Miss Meng, who was still in high school at the time and only 17 years old, to Madam. That’s how Miss Meng came to live with the Huo family.”
“Madam truly raised Miss Meng as her own granddaughter, sending her to the best schools, hiring the best tutors, and even funding her education abroad. Now that Miss Meng has grown up, she’s able to take on responsibilities at the company and help Madam manage it.”
Huo Jianan recalled her meeting with Meng Xien the previous day. The woman had a commanding presence, was shrewd and capable, and carried herself with grace—undoubtedly an exceptional individual.
Listening to the entire story, she couldn’t find any instance where the Huo family or Grandmother Huo had wronged Meng Xien or her mother. So why, then, had Meng Xien teamed up with Ruan Nianning to seek revenge against the Huo family? And why had she schemed to seize their assets?
Huo Jianan discreetly took a deep breath. It was a pity that in the original novel, Meng Xien was a minor character of minor characters, with her backstory and motivations barely touched upon.
The midday sun warmed the winter air. After lunch, Huo Jianan asked Housekeeper He to fetch her a coat. Bundled up, she was wheeled out to stroll through the garden.
A few others were walking in the garden. Tired of the monotonous, cold colors of the hospital, she wanted to see the vibrant scenery of life: green trees and red camellias.
A tangerine tree stood in the garden, its branches laden with bright red fruits, creating a lively, festive atmosphere.
A gust of wind rustled the leaves, causing the snowdrops and philodendrons to sway gently.
“Miss,” Housekeeper He said, “I’ll fetch you a hat. You have a head injury, and catching a cold wouldn’t be good. Wait here for me.”
Her solemn concern made her sound like a protective parent sending a child to daycare. Huo Jianan smiled. “Housekeeper He, I won’t wander off.”
Huo Jianan had eaten plenty of tangerines before, but this was her first time seeing a tangerine tree. Excitedly, she maneuvered her wheelchair forward and stopped beneath it.
A sign hung from the tree: “Ornamental Tree—No Picking.”
Yet some people just ignored such signs. At that moment, a man and woman were climbing the tree, oblivious to others, to pick the tangerines.
With a snap, the man plucked a tangerine, branch and all, and tossed it down. “Catch!”
The woman stood beside Huo Jianan, her face brimming with excitement as she prepared to catch the tangerine. Unfortunately, the man’s aim was terrible. The tangerine hurtled straight toward Huo Jianan’s head.
A normal person could have easily dodged to the side or twisted their body to avoid it. But Huo Jianan was confined to a wheelchair, her movements limited. As the tangerine hurtled toward her, she hastily crossed her arms above her head to protect her injured skull.
“What are you doing?” A cool, clear voice cut through the air. The tangerine didn’t strike Huo Jianan; instead, it was caught mid-air by a slender hand.
“This is a hospital, not a tourist farm. Your behavior could harm other patients.”
Huo Jianan lowered her arms and looked up. The figure was dressed in a white coat, likely a doctor. Her hair cascaded to her collarbones, curling slightly at the ends, framing her delicate jawline.
Both the man and woman appeared to be in their early thirties. Instead of apologizing when reprimanded, the man arrogantly plucked another tangerine.
“Who have I hurt? Who’s injured here?” He slammed the tangerine viciously onto the ground, laughing loudly. “Did I hurt the tangerine or the grass?”
He provocatively plucked four or five oranges, then hurled them one by one onto the ground with force! The oranges split open, their flesh shattered, and juice splattered across the grass, some even staining Huo Jianan’s pant legs.
“Who do you think you are? So what if I damaged some oranges and the grass? What can you do about it? Make them sue me! Idiot!”
The female doctor’s fingers, hanging at her sides, curled slightly, a flicker of anger flashing in her eyes.
The woman chimed in, supporting the man, “Exactly! You’re being way too nosy! Didn’t oranges grow to be picked?”
Huo Jianan propelled her wheelchair forward. “If you want to pick oranges, go to an orchard where you can pick and eat as much as you want for a hundred yuan. This is a hospital, and I’m a patient here. You nearly hit me with those oranges.”
The woman glared at Huo Jianan. “Mind your own business! Why should we go to an orchard? I like picking them here! You said it yourself—you were nearly hit. That means you weren’t actually hit. And you’re still whining about it!”
What a pair of bullies, each more unreasonable and stubborn than the last.
“My pants are stained from the oranges you threw down,” Huo Jianan said with a cold smile. “I never wash these pants, so just compensate me directly. Forget the small change—just pay 100,000.”
“100,000?!” The woman shrieked like a startled gopher. “Are you trying to rob us?!”
Huo Jianan patiently explained, “These are already my cheapest pants. You should feel fortunate.”
“Damn it! We’ve run into a cripple trying to extort money!” The man, furious, scrambled down the tree too hastily, a branch tearing a rip in his jeans.
Huo Jianan kindly pointed out, “Sir, your rear is about to be exposed. This is a public place. Indecency in front of two ladies is unbecoming.”
“You! You must be out of your mind!” The man clenched his fist, ready to strike.
Seeing his aggressive stance, Huo Jianan smiled faintly and turned to the doctor. “Looks like he’s about to attack me. Could you please record this?”
The female doctor paused, a smirk playing on her lips. She pulled out her phone and began filming.
The man grew increasingly agitated. “What are you doing? What are you filming for? Didn’t you see she was the one extorting money first?” He turned to glare at Huo Jianan, his fist pressing against the gauze on her head. “You crippled bitch! You’re money-crazy! Your brain’s broken! You came to the hospital to rob people!”
At that moment, other patients walking in the garden heard the commotion and turned to look.
Seizing the opportunity, the man shouted loudly, “You all saw it! I didn’t hit her!”
Huo Jianan suddenly clutched her chest, closed her eyes, and cried out, “Oh my god! Doctor, help me! My chest hurts so much! If the police take a statement, please tell them the truth—I was frightened by him! He’s responsible for everything!”
The man froze, then erupted in fury. “Damn it! You think you can blackmail me too? Just wait till I beat the living daylights out of you!”
Someone whispered, “Who’s this guy? To dare hit the Huo Family Young Miss! And he has the nerve to claim she’s blackmailing him?”
This time, the man’s anger burned inward. Just as he moved to strike, the female doctor pushed him back. Housekeeper He descended from the elevator, accompanied by another man in his fifties.
“Young Miss!” Housekeeper He exclaimed, rushing forward to protect her young charge when she saw someone about to strike her. “Who are you? How dare you lay a hand on her!”
The man in his fifties who had been following behind her also hurried over at the commotion. The man immediately withdrew his hand upon seeing him. “Father, Uncle Wang has come out. Perfect timing! This crippled fool just demanded a hundred thousand yuan from me!”
He turned to look at the woman in the wheelchair and paled, his face draining of color. “Miss Huo!”
“Father, you know her? It’s this crippled…”
Slap!
Before he could finish, his father struck him across the face. “Fool! Are you blind? Do you know who she is? She’s the young miss of the Huo family! Why would she extort you?!”
The son, his face stinging from the slap, stared blankly. “The Huo family? Which Huo family?”
The onlookers shook their heads. In Changbin, there was only one Huo family.
