- Chapter 10 - Wife, You've Been Through So Much
Early in the morning, Huo Jianan woke up to see a person in a white coat standing before her, talking to Ruan Nianning. Noticing she was awake, the person smiled and asked, “Miss Huo, how are you feeling today? Does your head still hurt?”
Huo Jianan slowly sat up, testing her head by shaking it slightly. “No, it doesn’t hurt. I feel much better.”
Ruan Nianning introduced them. “Jianan, this is your attending physician, Doctor Zhou.”
Huo Jianan greeted him politely. “Hello, Doctor Zhou. Thank you for performing the surgery yesterday.”
Doctor Zhou replied, “Miss Huo, you’re too kind. Saving patients is a doctor’s duty; it’s no trouble at all.”
Huo Jianan touched the bandage on her head and asked tentatively, “Doctor Zhou, I feel completely recovered now. Can I be discharged today and go home?”
Before Doctor Zhou could answer, Grandmother Huo’s voice suddenly rang out. “Absolutely not!”
Startled, Huo Jianan turned toward the door. Sure enough, Grandmother Huo stood there, her presence imposing.
“Grandmother, you’re here so early.”
Grandmother Huo gave a cool, detached hum in response, then turned to Doctor Zhou. “She had intracranial bleeding—a serious condition. Although the surgery was successful, we can’t be careless. We’ll stick to the plan from yesterday: three days of hospital observation. Once we’re certain there are no complications, she can be discharged.”
“Very well, Madam Huo,” Doctor Zhou said. “That’s exactly what I meant.”
“Grandmother, I’m really fine now. I know my body best…”
Huo Jianan met Grandmother Huo’s stern gaze and swallowed the rest of her words.
“You know best? If you truly did, you wouldn’t have helped your wife hide this from me two nights ago. And you caught it yourself? How could catching something yourself cause intracranial bleeding?”
Huo Jianan: “…” She dared not speak.
Ruan Nianning also kept her head lowered, afraid to interject.
The atmosphere in the room turned awkward and tense. Doctor Zhou broke the silence. “Miss Huo, please listen to your grandmother and stay in the hospital for two more days of observation. It will put everyone at ease.”
“Alright, alright,” Huo Jianan relented. “I’ll follow the doctor’s advice.”
Seeing her granddaughter comply and abandon her insistence on leaving, Grandmother Huo’s expression softened considerably. She exchanged a few more words with Doctor Zhou.
After Doctor Zhou left, Grandmother Huo approached the bed. Noticing her granddaughter’s complexion had improved significantly from the day before, her own expression brightened. “Nanan, what would you like to eat?”
Huo Jianan replied that she wanted fried dough sticks, steamed buns, and ideally a bowl of tofu pudding, but soy milk would do if that wasn’t available.
Before Huo Jianan could respond, Grandmother Huo had already instructed Housekeeper He, “Prepare the same as at home: propolis tablets, toast, milk, and a fruit plate.”
Huo Jianan thought to herself, You’ve already arranged everything. Why even ask my opinion?
She added another observation to her assessment of Grandmother Huo from yesterday: not only shrewd and power-hungry, but also overbearing and domineering.
She’d never tried propolis tablets before and didn’t know if they tasted good, though she’d heard they were good for the skin. “Grandmother, could you prepare another portion for…”
“For your wife, isn’t it?” Grandmother Huo sneered. “I doubt she’d deign to touch anything from our Huo family. She’s always dreaming of returning to be a big star.”
Hearing this, Huo Jianan sensed hidden meaning in her grandmother’s words. Could something have happened between them before?
Housekeeper He hurriedly interjected, “Young Miss, of course we’ve prepared a portion for the Young Madam. We’ve substituted whole wheat toast for regular, reduced the fruit portion, and added a chicken breast salad with vegetables.”
Huo Jianan considered for a moment. She guessed that Ruan Nianning, being a celebrity, likely needed to manage her weight and might have specific dietary requirements. This explained Grandmother Huo’s dismissive comment about the Huo family’s offerings being beneath her. It revealed a deeper resentment: Grandmother Huo clearly resented the fact that Ruan Nianning, now married into the Huo family, still harbored ambitions to return to her acting career.
“Great! I’ll have breakfast with Nianning later.”
In the hospital room, Grandmother Huo sat with a stern expression, Ruan Nianning kept her head lowered in submissive silence, Housekeeper He stood nervously, and only Huo Jianan smiled.
She was the only patient, and the only one with a smile. Like sunlight dispersing leaden clouds, golden rays pierced through the gloom, radiating warmth and hope.
“Grandmother, have you eaten yet? You came so early to see me; you must not have had breakfast. I’ll share my propolis packets with you—they’re great for beauty and skin care. That way, Grandmother will stay forever young and beautiful.”
Grandmother Huo paused in surprise, then after a moment, replied stiffly, “I don’t need your propolis packets. I have my own.” Yet a glimmer of amusement appeared in her eyes. “I’ll have breakfast at the company. You two can have a quick bite here.”
“Alright, Grandmother. Just make sure you eat properly. Don’t worry about me—Nianning and Housekeeper He take good care of me.”
“Hmm.” Grandmother Huo glanced at them one last time before leaving.
Housekeeper He followed her out, escorting her all the way to the car.
“Housekeeper He, don’t you think the Young Miss has changed? She’s never talked so much with me before, smiled in front of me, or even asked if I’ve eaten breakfast.”
Housekeeper He pondered for a moment. “Yes, Young Miss’s temper has improved greatly these past few days. She’s become much more mature.”
Grandmother Huo muttered to herself, “Could it be that getting married and settling down has finally made him act like an adult?”
In the hospital room, sunlight streamed through the half-open window, bringing in the fresh morning breeze.
Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning sat at the table, basking in the sunlight as they ate. Huo Jianan pushed the whole-grain bread, eggs, and salad toward Ruan Nianning, then rested her chin in her hands, watching her with bright eyes.
“Why are you staring at me like that?”
“To watch you eat the whole-grain bread. I couldn’t possibly stomach that rough-tasting bread myself.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
She picked up a piece of whole-grain bread and slowly ate it with the vegetable salad, occasionally sipping lemon water.
Looking up, she saw Huo Jianan still staring at her. “Why are you just watching me? Aren’t you going to eat?”
Huo Jianan grinned foolishly. “Wife, you look so beautiful when you eat! So quiet and elegant! I bet you were the school beauty in high school, with tons of classmates secretly crushing on you.”
Huo Jianan seems unusually talkative today.
“It’s alright,” Ruan Nianning said, her voice flat as she kept her head lowered.
If she had her way, she wouldn’t be liked by so many boys. That way, she wouldn’t be cornered in the bathroom by other girls, have her hair pulled, or be slapped…
“I heard you transferred from an elite school?!”
“Hahaha, a fallen Young Miss, huh? Too bad there’s no white knight here to save you!”
“You’re different, alright! You can’t wait to throw yourself at everyone, can you?”
“How trashy! Are all the girls from your elite school this low-class and desperate? Hahaha!”
“What?! You dare bite me?!” The leader of the group, now furious, unleashed a barrage of punches and kicks.
Huo Jianan watched Ruan Nianning’s expression grow darker, her gaze colder, a frigid aura radiating from her. Her heart skipped a beat.
Did I say something wrong?
Just then, a phone rang—Ruan Nianning’s.
Huo Jianan glanced at the caller ID: Zou Guohua.
Zou Guohua? Who’s that?
Ruan Nianning frowned at the name, but she didn’t hide it from Huo Jianan as she answered the call.
“What do you want?” Ruan Nianning sounded impatient.
“N-no, it’s nothing. Isn’t today your third day of marriage? You and Miss Huo should be returning home… are you coming back?” The middle-aged man’s voice trembled uncertainly over the phone.
Ruan Nianning scoffed. “Return home? To where?! I haven’t had a home for a long time!”
“How can you say that? I’m your father. Wherever your father is, that’s your home…”
Huo Jianan listened silently to the conversation, realizing that this must be Ruan Nianning’s father, making him her father-in-law.
Before the man could finish, Ruan Nianning interrupted him. “That’s your home, with that woman and your children. It’s not my home. My mother is gone. Now, my home…” Ruan Nianning turned to look at Huo Jianan, her smile soft and sweet. “I’m married to Jianan now, so the Huo family is my home.”
Her beautiful, bewitching eyes glistened with a questioning light, as if asking Jianan, Is that right?
Huo Jianan nodded firmly in agreement. “Yes, we have our own little home now. The Huo family is your support.”
Zou Guohua persisted, “That’s not quite right. Your stepmother and sister care deeply about you. Last night, the whole family watched the wedding coverage. We’re all so happy for you! Ningning, could you at least stop by for a moment?”
“Jianan is at the hospital today. She can’t come.”
Upon hearing that Miss Huo was injured, Zou Guohua immediately offered to visit her at the hospital.
This time, Ruan Nianning didn’t even consult Huo Jianan before coldly refusing. After a few more words between father and daughter, Ruan Nianning took her phone into the bathroom and closed the door.
Huo Jianan faintly heard Ruan Nianning’s voice, strained with suppressed anger: “Zou Guohua, you promised to repair my mother’s and grandmother’s graves last time. I gave you two million yuan—did you even do it? I won’t give you another cent!”
When the door opened, Huo Jianan quickly lowered her head, pretending to be engrossed in her breakfast. She grabbed a propolis tablet and bit into it.
Ugh! This propolis tablet is disgusting! How can something so vile be so expensive? It’s outrageous! No wonder Grandmother refused to eat it!
After one bite, Huo Jianan abandoned the tablet and picked up a fragrant, soft piece of toast instead.
By the time Ruan Nianning returned to the dining table, her earlier gloom had vanished. She carefully pushed the fruit bowl closer to Huo Jianan. “Jianan, have some fruit.”
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment and picked up a cherry. The fruit was plump, fresh, and sweet.
Ruan Nianning smiled and urged her to eat two more pieces of honeydew melon.
Huo Jianan slowly ate, thinking about how difficult Ruan Nianning’s life must be. Her relationship with her father, Zou Guohua, seemed strained; she had even changed her surname. This wasn’t surprising; Zou Guohua had long since formed a new family, and that place could no longer be considered Ruan Nianning’s home.
Huo Jianan watched Ruan Nianning, who was smiling brightly. Despite the anger and resentment burning within her, Ruan Nianning maintained her pleasant demeanor after that phone call, treating her enemy with kindness and even feigning genuine happiness.
Just thinking about it made Huo Jianan feel sympathy for her, as if she were bearing the weight of Ruan Nianning’s suppressed emotions.
“Darling, could you do me a favor?”
Ruan Nianning arched her eyebrows slightly, smiling. “What is it? Go ahead.”
“I’m being discharged in a couple of days. Could you go out and pick out a few outfits for me? I trust your sense of style.”
Ruan Nianning, a little surprised, readily agreed. “Of course.”
Housekeeper He spoke up from the side. “I’ll have the driver come to pick up the Young Madam.”
“Mm,” Huo Jianan replied with a smile. “And darling, you don’t need to come back for lunch. Take your time picking out the outfits. I’d also like you to get some hats and handbags. I’ll wait for you for dinner.”
“Alright.” Ruan Nianning poured her a warm glass of milk, her eyes curving into a genuine smile this time. She was truly happy.
Huo Jianan: “……”
As expected, not having to face her enemy all day lifted her mood.
