- Chapter 9 - A Cross-Frequency Conversation
When Pei Suyu returned, she found Gan Lu frantically poking at the laptop keyboard, looking like she’d lost all hope.
Pei Suyu glanced at the black screen. Though she already knew the answer, she couldn’t help but ask, “What did you do this time?”
“Teacher Pei,” Gan Lu whispered, “I think the computer is… broken?”
“You think?” Pei Suyu narrowed her eyes.
“Okay!” Gan Lu dropped her head in despair. “It’s definitely broken.”
Pei Suyu realized that once you’ve experienced enough shocks, you develop a certain Zen-like detachment. Her heart didn’t even skip a beat.
She simply asked, “What were you doing?”
“It was all for—” Gan Lu started to say, but stopped herself. She realized that telling the truth might hurt her teacher’s pride too much. She shook her head. “Nothing, really! I was just browsing. What a piece of junk… it’s so fragile.”
Pei Suyu didn’t really want to dig into the details. She dropped the subject, set down the bags she was carrying, and handed Gan Lu a brand-new phone.
“I got you a new number for now. Once your foot is better, I’ll take you to get your old one replaced if you want to keep using it.”
“Thank you, Teacher Pei!”
Gan Lu accepted the phone with delight. Her opinion of Pei Suyu climbed several notches; her teacher was just so incredibly thoughtful.
However, as Pei Suyu hauled over a large cardboard box and began pulling things out one by one, Gan Lu’s pupils contracted.
Pei Suyu was unloading a mountain of practice exams, stationery, and textbooks. Gan Lu could have sworn she hadn’t seen this much study material even when she was physically at school.
Gan Lu’s eyes darted around as she made a last-ditch effort to play dumb. “Teacher Pei… what’s all this for?”
“Reviewing!” Pei Suyu said matter-of-factly. “I’ve accepted your mother’s money, so I have to show some educational results. Start by finishing these diagnostic tests for each subject. I need to see your actual level before I can tailor a plan for you.”
Pei Suyu wasn’t usually a talkative person, but when it came to academics, she couldn’t help but nag. Yet, out of all that nagging, Gan Lu seemed to catch the wrong point entirely.
“Teacher Pei,” Gan Lu asked curiously, “how much did my mom give you?”
A rare flash of guilt crossed Pei Suyu’s face. The amount Gan Feng had provided was truly obscene. But she wasn’t one to lie about such things. “500,000 a month,” she said honestly, adding with a self-deprecating smile, “If I don’t produce any results, taking that much money would weigh on my conscience.”
Gan Lu didn’t grasp the “conscience” part at all. Her dark eyes sparkled as she tested the waters. “Teacher Pei, what if I give you 500,000? Could you do one thing for me?”
One look at the girl’s expression told Pei Suyu that she was plotting something. She decided to “fish” for the answer and smiled. “You have that much money?”
Thinking she had peaked Pei Suyu’s interest, Gan Lu immediately logged into her mobile banking app to show her. “This is all the allowance I’ve saved up,” she said proudly. “See? I’m actually quite thrifty.”
Pei Suyu looked at the balance. There were so many zeros she had to count them twice. Seven zeros. She suddenly felt like the joke was on her.
Gan Lu watched her carefully. Seeing that she didn’t look angry, she bolstered her courage and stammered out, “Um… Teacher Pei, if I give you 500,000, can you… just let me be? Stop making me study?”
Pei Suyu finally understood the “scheme.” She chuckled inwardly but kept a sweet smile on her face. “So, you want me to help you scam your mother? You have a vivid imagination.”
Gan Lu disagreed. “But it’s a win-win! You get to earn double the money for zero the effort. It’s perfect!”
“Sounds lovely,” Pei Suyu nodded, seemingly in agreement.
“So you’ll do it?! I’ll transfer the money right now!” Gan Lu eagerly reached out to scan Pei Suyu’s QR code.
Pei Suyu’s smile vanished instantly. She blocked the girl’s phone, her face turning icy. “So young, yet so full of underhanded tricks. If only you used that brain for your studies.”
She picked up the midterm practice tests for Math and English and tossed them onto the bed with a grim expression. “Finish these today. I want to see exactly what kind of ‘weight’ you carry.”
“Teacher Peiiii—” Gan Lu wailed.
“Add one more test every time you whine.”
“No!”
“Two more!”
Gan Lu shut her mouth immediately. Pei Suyu, thoroughly annoyed by the girl’s “bribe,” grabbed the laptop and strode out of the room.
At the door, she gave a final warning. “Hurry up. If you don’t finish, or if your score is too low, there will be consequences.”
Gan Lu completely withered. She let out a groan of despair, staring at the mountain of papers as if they were her mortal enemies.
Back in the study, Pei Suyu fixed the laptop. She had a basic understanding of computer maintenance and quickly discovered it was a virus. Once it was back up, she was curious about what Gan Lu had been looking at to crash the system, so she opened the browser history.
Explicit, indescribable images filled the screen. Pei Suyu froze for several seconds before closing the tab with a livid face.
She tried to endure it. She tried to hold back her anger. But finally, she couldn’t. She slammed her hand on the desk, stood up, and stormed back into Gan Lu’s room.
She found the girl sitting at her desk, legs crossed, a pen dangling from her mouth. She was staring idly at the test paper, her mind clearly miles away.
Seeing her like this only added fuel to Pei Suyu’s fire. She marched over and looked at the Math test. Except for the multiple-choice questions, the paper was nearly blank.
In the space for the final long-form question, Gan Lu had used a black pen to draw a Chibi-style portrait. It was a person with chin-length hair, a slightly stern expression, silver-rimmed glasses, and thin lips pressed into a serious line.
The more she looked, the more it looked like her. Gan Lu was currently propping up her chin, staring at the drawing with a silly grin.
Pei Suyu rapped her knuckles on the desk. “What are you daydreaming about?”
“Teacher Pei!” Gan Lu jumped, nearly falling off her chair. She sat up straight and realized the drawing was exposed. She frantically covered it with her arm.
But Pei Suyu wasn’t focused on the drawing. She kept her face cold. “What on earth were you looking at on my computer earlier?”
Pei Suyu had acted on impulse. The “laptop incident” had been the final straw for her frayed nerves. Now that she was actually confronting the girl, she felt a wave of awkwardness. This was a sensitive, private matter. She probably should have discussed this with Gan Lu’s mother instead.
Meanwhile, Gan Lu assumed Pei Suyu had seen the chat logs with Lin Lin. She thought her “secret knowledge” about Pei Suyu’s “condition” was out in the open.
“So you know…” Gan Lu sighed, trying to find the words to comfort her. “Please don’t be too upset. This isn’t something you have to hide. If you’re sick, we just have to treat it. You can’t run away from it.”
Pei Suyu was so angry she actually laughed. “And you think you’re in the right? What does looking at that stuff have to do with being sick?”
“It has everything to do with it! You can’t avoid the doctor!” Gan Lu tried her best to explain the “research” she had gathered. “If you don’t see a doctor and don’t find a way to… relieve the pressure yourself, you’ll end up with psychological issues! I’m just saying you shouldn’t escape reality. You need to face the treatment.”
Pei Suyu’s logic slowly returned. Seeing how “sincere” Gan Lu was, she started to self-reflect. Maybe I’m overreacting? Kids these days are mature, and Gan Lu is an adult. Maybe looking at that stuff once in a while isn’t a crime.
She softened her voice, though she still felt awkward. “Look if you must, but keep it in moderation. It’s not good to watch too much of that.”
Seeing Pei Suyu’s softened stance, Gan Lu believed her teacher was finally coming to terms with her “incapacity.” She encouraged her, “You’re right! When you’re free, we can even watch together—”
“Enough! You’re getting more ridiculous by the second.” Pei Suyu cut her off. She assumed Gan Lu’s pheromones were acting up again and making her have “inappropriate” thoughts. She put on a stern face. “Focus on the questions. I’m coming back to check them later.”
Watching her teacher leave, Gan Lu sighed. Sigh. It seems Teacher Pei still hasn’t fully accepted her condition. But at least we’re making progress. She’s actually willing to discuss such a private topic with me now!
Keep going! I will cure Teacher Pei!
She pumped herself up, then looked back at the test paper. She instantly wilted like a frost-bitten eggplant.
Ugh… I really don’t know how to do these!
Two hours later, Pei Suyu returned. Seeing Gan Lu’s miserable expression as she glared at the paper, she had a good idea of her level.
She flipped through the tests. The “chicken scratch” handwriting made her eyes ache. She did a quick mental calculation: fifty points, max. Her gaze drifted to the Chibi drawing in the corner. She didn’t scold her for it.
Instead, she asked, “Have you studied art?”
Gan Lu shook her head. “No, I just like reading manga. I taught myself.”
“It’s not bad.”
Gan Lu beamed at the praise, only to be hit with a heavy blow a second later. “But with your grades, you really shouldn’t torture yourself trying to get into a top university. Seriously. Life has many possibilities, and your family is rich. There’s no need to hang yourself from one specific tree.”
“Teacher Pei… do you mean it’s hard for me to get into Kyoto University on my own?” Gan Lu’s energy vanished.
“It’s not ‘hard’,” Pei Suyu paused, her voice low. “It’s impossible.”
Gan Lu burst into tears. Pei Suyu looked pained. “Maybe consider a different goal? Let’s not make life miserable for both of us.”
“No! This is a promise I made to someone. I have to get into Kyoto University by myself.” Gan Lu shook her head with iron determination.
“Who did you offend so badly that they’d trick you into such a trap?”
Gan Lu froze. It took her a long time to mutter, “Teacher Pei, I only realized today just how sharp your tongue is.”
Pei Suyu was silent for a moment. “I’m afraid if I’m not sharp today, I’ll be dead from frustration by tomorrow.”
But Gan Lu’s will was surprisingly firm. Despite the crushing blow, she insisted she wouldn’t give up. Pei Suyu stopped arguing and told her they would spend the next few days doing diagnostic tests for every subject to see exactly how “ruined” her foundation was.
Under Pei Suyu’s iron fist, Gan Lu listened as her mistakes were explained. It was like listening to a foreign language.
“You probably didn’t understand a word of that,” Pei Suyu sighed. “Go copy the fundamental formulas for this question ten times.”
“How about five?”
“Ten,” Pei Suyu said, her teacher-mode in full effect. “If you still don’t get it after that, we’ll do ten more.”
“Teacher Peiiii… am I allowed to sleep at all?!”
“Forgot my rules already?” Pei Suyu pointed at the door. “If you don’t want to write, turn left and leave my house.”
Gan Lu shut her mouth and began to toil away at the formulas. By the time she finished, it was midnight.
She stretched and checked her phone. She was surprised to see a message from someone she hadn’t heard from in a long time—her “shadow,” Ying Zi.
[Ying Zi]: Lu Lu, come out for a bit. I have something to tell you.
