- Chapter 6 - I’m Afraid of the Dark
Pei Suyu let out a light cough and pushed the door open. Upon entering, she saw Gan Lu huddled beneath the covers, only her flushed little face peeking out.
Seeing her teacher, the girl let out a weak whimper. “…Teacher Pei, thank you for saving me yet again.”
Pei Suyu let out a cold snort in her mind. She didn’t bother to call out the girl’s little performance.
Walking to the bedside, she sat down, poured a glass of water, and handed it over. “Feeling better?” she asked at a measured pace. “Sit up and drink some water.”
Gan Lu dawdled as she struggled into a semi-upright position. She took a tiny sip of the water, her eyes darting toward Pei Suyu every few seconds as if she were hesitating to speak.
Pei Suyu feigned ignorance and went straight to the point. “I just called your mother. She said she’s sending someone to pick you up shortly. Don’t be so reckless in the future.”
The moment those words were out, Gan Lu’s face crumpled. She collapsed back into the pillows, limp and boneless, let out a series of low moans. “Ugh… Teacher Pei, it hurts…”
She looked so fragile one would think she was about to depart from this world.
Afraid the girl’s acting would lead to her dropping the glass, Pei Suyu quickly took it from her and set it on the nightstand. She let out a dry laugh. “Where exactly does it hurt?”
Caught off guard, Gan Lu stammered, “My… my heart hurts…”
Pei Suyu grabbed the girl’s hand and moved it slightly. “This is your chest,” she said flatly. “Where you were just clutching is your stomach.”
Gan Lu’s face turned bright red, but she stubbornly argued back, “Well, my chest hurts, and my stomach hurts, and I just feel uncomfortable all over! How can you have the heart to kick me out?”
“If you’re sick, find a doctor,” Pei Suyu said coldly. “I’m not a physician. What good does it do to stay here and bother me?”
Gan Lu replied with perfect confidence, “But the moment I can’t see you, my heart starts to ache.”
The statement was so loaded with ambiguity that had Pei Suyu not known about the girl’s bizarre medical condition, she would have thought Gan Lu was dying of unrequited love.
But at the end of the day, it was all down to the pheromones creating this warped dependency. Pei Suyu wondered who she could even complain to; she had tried to do a good deed and ended up with a permanent shadow.
Realizing that logic was wasted on this girl, she hardened her expression. “Enough. Stop being unreasonable. Rest for a bit, and then go home with whoever comes for you.”
“Teacher, you’re so cruel.”
Pei Suyu ignored the girl’s piteous accusations and non-stop chatter. Eventually, seeing that Pei Suyu was completely unresponsive, Gan Lu simply pulled the quilt over her head and began to play the role of a stubborn brat.
“I don’t care! I’m not leaving… I’m not leaving!”
Pei Suyu pressed her fingers to her throbbing temples. Suddenly, her phone rang. It was Jing Xin.
She answered.
“Hey,” Jing Xin whispered on the other end. “What’s the situation? The girl’s sister just showed up downstairs.”
Gan Hu? Why is she here?
Pei Suyu felt a surge of apprehension. Based on the original plot, Gan Hu was the reason Gan Lu had suffered so much, eventually leading to her “blackening” and downfall. She had zero positive feelings for this woman.
“Where is she now?” Pei Suyu asked.
“Downstairs in the bar,” Jing Xin replied. “I was just about to close up when she arrived.”
Pei Suyu thought for a moment. “Tell her to wait. I’ll be down in a minute.”
Pei Suyu stood up and headed downstairs. At a booth, she saw two people: Jing Xin and a woman in a white dress. The stranger had smooth black hair draped naturally over her shoulders and delicate features. She was a complete contrast to Gan Lu’s sharp, vibrant beauty—she looked exceptionally gentle and demure.
Undoubtedly, this was Gan Hu.
As Pei Suyu approached, the woman stood up to introduce herself. “You must be Teacher Pei. I’m Gan Lu’s sister, Gan Hu. My mother is abroad for a multinational conference and couldn’t make it back, so I’m sorry for the trouble. How is Lu Lu?”
“She’s fine, resting upstairs,” Pei Suyu replied neutrally, scanning her with an unnoticeable gaze.
Gan Hu nodded. “Could you please take me to see my sister?”
Pei Suyu didn’t say more and led her upstairs. Jing Xin stayed behind to handle things at the bar.
As they climbed the stairs, Pei Suyu probed intentionally. “You’re Gan Lu’s sister? Your personalities seem like polar opposites. You’re much more composed. Gan Lu… well, she’s quite a handful. She keeps running off to bars.”
A flicker of awkwardness crossed Gan Hu’s face. “Oh, not at all. Lu Lu is just a bit playful and curious. Thank you for your concern, Teacher Pei. I’ll make sure to discipline her better from now on.”
Her responses were flawless—polite and modest. Had Pei Suyu not known the true plot, she might have actually believed this was a kind sister who truly cared for her sibling.
They reached the door, and Pei Suyu pushed it open to reveal a small, lumpy ball under the blankets.
“I’m not leaving! I’m not leaving! Don’t even think about kicking me out!” Gan Lu shouted from beneath the covers.
Pei Suyu turned to Gan Hu in silence.
Gan Hu hurried forward, her voice soft. “Lu Lu, it’s me. Sister’s here.”
Hearing the voice, Gan Lu cautiously poked her head out. “Sis? You scared me! I thought Mom had caught me.”
Gan Hu walked over, smoothing Gan Lu’s messy hair. “What is it now? Why are you making such a scene?”
Gan Lu’s lip trembled. “Sis, you have no idea how much I’ve suffered! That bitch drugged me and gave me Pheromone Disorder Syndrome. Mom won’t let me out of the house; I only managed to sneak out because she’s abroad.”
She pointed an accusing finger at Pei Suyu. “The doctors said I can only feel safe if I’m near her, but she keeps trying to throw me out! Don’t you think I’m just too pitiful?”
Gan Hu feigned confusion. “What’s going on? I came back in such a hurry I didn’t get to ask Mom the details. What kind of illness is Pheromone Disorder Syndrome?”
Gan Lu was too busy venting her grievances to explain the medical details properly. Pei Suyu sighed and gave a brief summary of the situation, though she was feeling increasingly hesitant.
If it had been Gan Feng, she would have let her take the girl without a word. But with Gan Hu—the malicious antagonist of the novel—she felt genuinely uneasy.
Gan Hu’s expression shifted slightly before she urged, “Lu Lu, stop being difficult. Listen to Mom and come home with me. You need proper treatment; you can’t keep bothering Teacher Pei like this.”
Gan Lu shook her head like a rattle. “No! You’re just like Mom—you don’t understand me at all! Staying home alone is miserable. I feel so helpless and pathetic.”
As Gan Hu tried to argue further, Gan Lu scrambled out of bed like a gust of wind and rushed over to Pei Suyu. She grabbed her arm and shook it. “Teacher Pei, I’m begging you! Just let me stay here. I promise I’ll do whatever you say. I can do the laundry, cook, clean… anything!”
Pei Suyu was silent for a long time before she finally exhaled a single word. “Fine. You can stay for now.”
“Really? I can stay?!” Gan Lu stared at her in disbelief before launching into a barrage of flattery. “Teacher Pei, I knew you were the best! So kind, so compassionate!”
Pei Suyu gave her a flat look. “And who was it that called me a bastard earlier?”
Gan Lu choked for a second, then shamelessly played the “sweet” card. “There was just a misunderstanding! Surely a great person like you wouldn’t hold a grudge against a little one like me.”
Listening to their exchange, Gan Hu’s brow knit together. She looked at Pei Suyu with dissatisfaction. “Teacher Pei, is this really appropriate? Won’t it be too much trouble for you?”
Pei Suyu shook her head. “It’s fine. Her condition is quite unusual, after all. Letting her run wild outside is even more worrying.”
Gan Hu looked like she wanted to say more, but finally managed, “But my mother told me to bring her back. If she doesn’t return, I’m afraid I won’t be able to explain it.”
Gan Lu shouted, “I’ll explain to Mom myself! Don’t worry, I won’t let her be mean to you.”
Watching the urgency in Gan Hu’s eyes, Pei Suyu felt as though the woman was plotting something sinister. This only strengthened her resolve to keep Gan Lu close.
“Tell you what,” Pei Suyu added, “I’ll call CEO Gan myself later to clarify everything.”
A flash of resentment crossed Gan Hu’s face, but she masked it quickly. “In that case, I’ll leave her in your care, Teacher Pei. I’ll be going now.”
Pei Suyu didn’t ask her to stay. Watching her walk away, she couldn’t help but reflect: This woman is a hazard. I should probably give Gan Lu’s mother a subtle heads-up later.
Meanwhile, the “brainless” Gan Lu was already immersed in the excitement of her successful scheme. “Teacher Pei, can we go home now?”
With a helpless sigh, Pei Suyu led her “trouble magnet” downstairs. She told Jing Xin she was leaving.
Jing Xin winked at her and whispered, “And you said nothing was going on? You’re taking her back to your place!”
“Don’t you dare tell my parents,” Pei Suyu warned. “It’s complicated. I’ll explain later.”
Jing Xin gave her a reassuring look, and Pei Suyu took Gan Lu home.
The moment they entered the apartment, Gan Lu made herself at home, flopping onto the bed and snuggling the quilt. “I’m finally back.”
Pei Suyu walked over, hauled her up by the collar, and unceremoniously led her to the guest room. She pointed at the small bed. “You sleep here. Be good, and don’t cause trouble, or else…”
She intentionally left the threat hanging. Gan Lu looked visibly nervous, likely afraid of being kicked out.
The rest of the day passed in relative peace. Pei Suyu cooked dinner, and after Gan Lu picked at her food, she returned to her room in a bit of a funk.
After Pei Suyu finished her shower, she leaned back against her headboard, thinking about how to handle this permanent guest, when she heard a knock, knock, knock at her door.
There was only one person in the house who would be knocking.
Pei Suyu frowned and didn’t respond at first, but the knocking continued with relentless persistence.
“Come in,” she finally called out.
The door pushed open to reveal Gan Lu in a camisole nightgown, clutching her pillow. She looked at her teacher piteously. “Teacher Pei… I’m afraid of the dark. Can I sleep with you?”
