- Chapter 5 - Schemes, Nothing But Schemes
Watching the two girls struggle in the middle of the dance floor, Pei Suyu didn’t rush forward immediately.
A phrase crossed her mind: pitiable people often have hateful qualities. While Gan Lu’s fate in the original novel was tragic, it was inextricably linked to her spoiled, willful personality.
After experiencing such a terrifying close call at a bar so recently, she still had the nerve to come back here alone to cause a scene. Pei Suyu watched from the shadows, deciding that as long as the girl stayed within her line of sight, it might be best to let her learn a sobering lesson this time.
“What are you looking at?”
A hand clapped Pei Suyu’s shoulder, breaking her trance. She turned to see Jing Xin walking over.
Jing Xin followed her gaze toward the dance floor and smirked. “Interested? She’s a looker, for sure, but her temper is something else.”
Pei Suyu realized Jing Xin seemed to know the girl. “Does she come here often?” she asked suspiciously.
Jing Xin hummed thoughtfully. “Not before, but she’s been a regular lately. Practically lives here.”
Suddenly remembering something, Jing Xin couldn’t help but grumble, “Wait, didn’t you save her last time? Because of her, my bar had to shut down for a two-week ‘rectification’ period. Talk about rotten luck.”
Pei Suyu frowned. “How long has she been coming back? Is she always this rowdy?”
“About a month now,” Jing Xin replied. “She shows up almost every day. See that Alpha pulling on her? That’s her regular tag-along.”
Pei Suyu froze.
She had assumed the Alpha was some random person trying to hit on her; she hadn’t expected them to be acquaintances. She stole another glance at the person—they looked to be around the same age as Gan Lu.
Relieved that there was no immediate danger, Pei Suyu lost interest in investigating further. She withdrew her gaze and pushed her glass toward Jing Xin.
The two began to chat idly, but after only a few sentences, Jing Xin flashed a wicked grin. “So, has my aunt called you lately?”
Pei Suyu gave a bitter smile, clearly wanting to dodge the topic.
But Jing Xin wasn’t about to let her off the hook. “I heard from my mom a few days ago that your parents are worried sick about your ‘life-long’ affairs. They said you’re pushing thirty, still unmarried, and don’t even have a partner. They asked me to introduce someone suitable to you.”
Pei Suyu looked up. “What, are you moonlighting as a matchmaker now?”
Jing Xin waved her hands dismissively. “I wouldn’t dare. But your mom wanted me to figure out what’s going on in that head of yours. Ever since you moved out in a fit of pique, your parents have become quite afraid of you.”
Pei Suyu sighed. After transmigrating, she realized the “original” Pei Suyu had been a textbook “good girl”—her education, job, and even her dating life had been meticulously micromanaged by her mother.
Having lived a life of total freedom before, Pei Suyu naturally refused to be controlled. She had tried to play along at first, but eventually, the suffocating grip became too much. She had laid her cards on the table, moved out, and now only returned home for the occasional meal.
Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden roar of noise from the dance floor. Both women looked over simultaneously.
“What now?” Pei Suyu asked.
Jing Xin frowned, turning back to Pei Suyu. “Cousin… do you smell that? Those pheromones… they’re incredibly enticing.”
Pei Suyu’s face went dark instantly. Don’t tell me…
She pushed past Jing Xin and strode into the dance floor. As expected, Gan Lu was at the center of a growing crowd, with the female Alpha trying to drag her away.
Gan Lu’s cheeks were flushed crimson, and an intoxicating scent billowed from her. The moment Pei Suyu approached, the pheromones began to rapidly shift scents. The surrounding Alphas were already being drawn in, inching closer with predatory looks.
One of the bolder ones began to leer. “Where did this Omega come from? Is she even of age? So thirsty she’s having a heat flare in broad daylight…”
Gan Lu glared at the man, her bravado paper-thin. “Get lost!” she barked.
She scanned the crowd frantically. She could feel Pei Suyu was here—otherwise, her pheromones wouldn’t be reacting like this. “Pei Suyu!” she cried out in distress. “Come out! I know you’re here!”
Beside her, the female Alpha, Lin Lin, was practically hyperventilating as she tugged at Gan Lu. “My little ancestor, I’m begging you! We have to leave now or things are going to get ugly!”
“I’m not leaving!” Gan Lu insisted stubbornly. “She’s here, Lin Lin! I can feel her!”
Lin Lin was about to lose her mind. The last time something happened on Gan Lu’s birthday, she had been grounded for two weeks. She’d only been “free” for a few days, and now this girl was inviting disaster again.
While they were struggling, the Alpha Gan Lu had insulted—feeling he’d lost face—called over a couple of friends. They surrounded the girls, shouting profanities and reaching out to grab them.
“Stop.”
Pei Suyu couldn’t watch any longer. She shoved through the crowd and walked toward Gan Lu.
The lead thug glared at her. “Who the hell are you? Don’t meddle in things that don’t concern you.”
Pei Suyu ignored them. She looked down at Gan Lu, whose eyes were half-lidded, and spoke in a cold, sharp voice. “Student Gan, do you simply live to cause trouble?”
“Teacher Pei… it hurts…”
Gan Lu let out a piteous whimper. Her eyes welled with tears as she wrenched herself free from Lin Lin and lunged toward Pei Suyu.
Before Pei Suyu could even think of dodging, the girl had buried her face in her chest, wrapping her limbs around her like an octopus. “Why didn’t you come to see me?” she sobbed into Pei Suyu’s coat. “My mom wouldn’t let me out. I couldn’t find you. You don’t know how miserable I’ve been…”
Pei Suyu’s planned lecture died in her throat. She let out a helpless sigh. “Stop making a scene. Can we just go home?”
“Okay,” Gan Lu nodded weakly, rubbing her tears into Pei Suyu’s blazer. A flash of genuine annoyance crossed Pei Suyu’s face.
The thugs, feeling ignored, stepped back into their roles as professional villains. “Hey, bitch! You’re really looking for a beating—”
Before they could finish, Jing Xin arrived with the bar’s security. In a matter of seconds, the thugs were rounded up, taught a swift lesson, and tossed out the door.
Lin Lin stood there, stunned, staring at Pei Suyu. “You… you’re Teacher Pei?”
Pei Suyu nodded. To her surprise, Lin Lin’s face lit up with relief. “Then… then I’ll leave Lu Lu in your hands! I just remembered I have something urgent to do. Bye!”
Without giving Pei Suyu a chance to speak, she abandoned her friend and bolted.
Left holding the half-conscious Gan Lu, Pei Suyu was momentarily speechless. Beside her, Jing Xin couldn’t help but tease, “Oh, Cousin~ looks like you’ve got a ‘situation’ on your hands!”
Pei Suyu wasn’t in the mood for jokes. As Gan Lu’s pheromones grew thicker, the surrounding Alphas were starting to eye them like wolves circling a piece of meat.
“Save the talk,” Pei Suyu snapped. “Do you have a private room and some suppressants?”
Seeing her expression, Jing Xin turned serious. She led them to the second floor, with Pei Suyu carrying Gan Lu in a bridal carry.
Fortunately, Jing Xin’s bar was prepared for all sorts of emergencies. Once inside the room, Pei Suyu laid the girl on the bed and wiped her face with a cold cloth. Jing Xin arrived shortly with the suppressants.
After administering the medicine, Pei Suyu watched as the flush faded from Gan Lu’s face and the shifting scents began to dissipate. She finally exhaled in relief.
With the crisis averted, Jing Xin’s gossip-hungry heart flared up again. She leaned in with a grin. “Come on, Cousin. Spill. What’s the deal?”
Pei Suyu didn’t want to talk, but Jing Xin was relentless. Eventually, she gave a brief, simplified explanation of their history.
The more Jing Xin heard, the more wicked her smile became. She burst into laughter. “Hahaha! Cousin, you’re a regular saint! Having such a beauty in your arms and staying totally unaffected? Impressive!”
Pei Suyu didn’t take the “compliment” to heart. Ever since she transmigrated, she knew she was completely immune to ABO pheromones. She had always been attracted to women, but for her, whether someone was an Alpha or an Omega was irrelevant to the attraction—it had nothing to do with biological “pull.” Of course, in an ABO world, such a concept was scandalous.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Pei Suyu said simply.
Jing Xin groaned. “But Cousin, if you won’t even take a beautiful Omega like this, are you really planning to grow old alone? My aunt and uncle will have heart attacks!”
Pei Suyu ignored her. She checked Gan Lu’s forehead; her temperature was back to normal.
“Let’s go outside,” she told Jing Xin. “Let her rest while I call her mother.”
Pei Suyu pulled the protesting Jing Xin out of the room. But the moment the door clicked shut, the girl on the bed opened her eyes. Her dark pupils darted around, and a sly smile spread across her face.
She sat up quietly, grabbed her phone from the nightstand, and immediately started a video call with her best friend, Lin Lin.
“How’d it go?!” Lin Lin asked breathlessly the moment she picked up. “What’s the status, sister?”
Gan Lu puffed out her cheeks, looking distressed. “I managed to stay here, but I just heard her say she’s calling my mom. She’s definitely going to send me away. What do I do?”
“Stay calm, don’t panic,” Lin Lin frowned, then suddenly slapped her own forehead. “If all else fails, just… ‘cook the rice.’ Once it’s done, your mom will have to cave!”
“But…” Gan Lu hesitated.
The problem was, Teacher Pei was “incapable”!
For once, Gan Lu’s brain worked quickly enough to realize that telling Lin Lin about Pei Suyu’s “problem” was a bad idea. She let out a long sigh. “Forget it. I’ll find a way. I’m hanging up now so she doesn’t catch me.”
“Wait, one more thing!” Lin Lin shouted. “The thugs you hired to cause trouble yesterday got beaten up pretty badly. Two of them are at the police station, and they’re demanding more money.”
“I know, I know. Don’t bother me with small things.”
Gan Lu sniffled irritably and casually transferred 200,000 yuan to Lin Lin. “Give it to them. Just make sure they don’t sell me out, or I’ll make them regret it.”
After hanging up, Gan Lu snuggled into the blankets, inhaling deeply. She felt a sense of immense satisfaction.
The blankets smelled like Pei Suyu.
She didn’t know why she was so obsessed with that scent, but being in Pei Suyu’s embrace made her feel safe. She wanted to stay. During their time apart, she had been miserable with longing—it was the first time she had ever felt this way.
“No matter what, I’m staying,” Gan Lu whispered, clenching her small fists.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the door, Pei Suyu—having heard everything—felt her temples throb with a growing migraine.
She had accidentally entangled herself with a very persistent, very troublesome little brat.
