- Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Why is Your Face So Red?
By the time Pei Suyu finished her afternoon classes, it was already three o’clock. When she arrived at the hospital, Gan Feng was tied up with business, so she was met instead by the secretary, Lin Ming.
Lin Ming was a refined and polite male Omega. Throughout their walk to the room, he dropped subtle hints: “Teacher Pei, our eldest miss has a bit of a temper. Please try not to take it to heart later.”
The subtext was clear: Please, for the love of God, hold back; don’t go provoking this little ancestor again.
Pei Suyu, having accepted the mother’s money, wasn’t about to make things difficult for the staff. She gave a noncommittal nod and pushed open the door to the ward. Lin Ming quietly closed it behind her.
Upon entering, she saw the girl lounging quite comfortably, legs crossed, snacking on a box of pre-cut fruit while scrolling through her phone.
Pei Suyu gave a light cough. “Looks like you’re feeling much better?”
Gan Lu jumped, the fruit in her mouth suddenly losing its flavor. She immediately uncrossed her legs and sat bolt upright, calling out in a voice like a startled kitten, “Teacher Pei… what are you doing here?”
“How are you?” Pei Suyu looked her over with a faint, amused smile. “For someone so young, you certainly have a fiery temperament.”
Realizing that Pei Suyu knew exactly why she had fainted, Gan Lu’s irritation flared. She didn’t dare snap at Pei Suyu directly, so she settled for a resentful grumble.
“You called me dim! How could I not be angry? Who likes being called stupid!” Her voice grew more aggrieved as she continued to mutter, “And I’m already repeating a grade… you putting me down like that was just a deliberate attempt to make me lose face in front of everyone.”
Pei Suyu was nearly moved to laughter by her twisted logic. “If you care so much about your ‘face,’ why don’t you actually study?”
Gan Lu turned her head away, her bravado unsupported by reason. “I want to study, but I just can’t focus! It’s all so boring. The teachers are dull, and then they blame me for not listening.”
Hearing this, Pei Suyu decided to drop the subject. She was afraid that if she started lecturing again, she’d trigger another pheromone meltdown, and that would be a heavy sin on her conscience.
“Alright, let’s not talk about that. Are you feeling better now?” Pei Suyu’s voice softened.
The moment she felt that touch of concern, the pout on Gan Lu’s face vanished, replaced by a bright smile. She patted her chest reassuringly. “I’m fine! I felt better ages ago, but my mom insisted on keeping me here.”
“Good to hear. Get some rest then.”
Her mission accomplished, Pei Suyu prepared to leave. Sensing her intent, Gan Lu panicked and reached out, grabbing Pei Suyu’s arm.
In her haste, the tug was too forceful. Pei Suyu’s collar slipped, exposing a section of her collarbone and shoulder—and with it, the clear bite marks Gan Lu had left behind.
Gan Lu’s face turned scarlet, and the request for Pei Suyu’s phone number died in her throat. Pei Suyu turned back in confusion, only to see the girl’s face glowing as red as a cooked shrimp.
She instinctively reached out to feel Gan Lu’s forehead. “Your face is so flush. Are you having another fever?”
The moment their skin met, Gan Lu’s flesh felt scalding hot. Almost instantly, the scent of roses wafted into the air—wild, sultry, and intense.
Given their previous experience, both women realized what was happening immediately.
The heat flare was back.
Gan Lu looked like she was on the verge of tears from the embarrassment. “Teacher Pei, I’m so hot…”
Pei Suyu froze for a second. Her first instinct was to call a doctor, but Gan Lu’s grip on her arm was like a vice; she wouldn’t let go.
Influenced by the surging pheromones, Gan Lu’s watery eyes were filled with a desperate urge to embrace her. However, one stern look from Pei Suyu frightened her into letting go. Internally, Gan Lu couldn’t help but wonder wildly: Is Teacher Pei really ‘incapable’? Why doesn’t she have any reaction at all?
Unaware of the girl’s inner turmoil, Pei Suyu pressed the call button for the doctor.
Once again, Gan Lu was subjected to a flurry of examinations. By the time the fuss was over, she lay on the bed looking like she’d lost her will to live, staring despondently at Pei Suyu.
“Teacher Pei, do you find me really annoying now?” She let out a heavy sigh. “I didn’t want this to happen. I just can’t control these ‘simp’ pheromones.”
Pei Suyu found herself genuinely amused by the girl’s humor. To be honest, she didn’t find her that annoying; it was more a sense of dread regarding the future. Logic told her that getting entangled with Gan Lu was a bad idea.
But seeing those innocent, blinking eyes, Pei Suyu felt a brief moment of tenderness. “You’re overthinking it. Why would I be annoyed with you?”
“Then why did you kick me out?” Gan Lu was relentless about that one point.
Pei Suyu rubbed her forehead. “I acted on impulse. I’ll add you back right now.”
Under Gan Lu’s watchful, expectant gaze, Pei Suyu reached into her phone and added her back into the math class group. Only then was the matter settled.
Once Gan Lu’s emotions stabilized, Pei Suyu made an excuse to leave. At the door, she was intercepted by Lin Ming, who informed her that the Vice President of the hospital, Dr. Chen, wished to see her.
Pei Suyu was led directly to the office. Dr. Chen was reviewing Gan Lu’s charts. “Miss Pei,” he began, “I have some questions regarding Gan Lu’s condition.”
Pei Suyu nodded silently.
Chen hesitated. “Do you truly have no reaction to Gan Lu’s pheromones?”
Pei Suyu knit her brows. “Isn’t that normal?”
“It is not,” Chen replied. “Our research shows that the inducer caused her pheromones to mutate. They now contain a specific substance that is hyper-attractive to Alphas. These sudden heat flares are incredibly dangerous for her.”
The result was exactly as it had been in the book. Pei Suyu didn’t know what to say.
Chen continued thoughtfully, “I was surprised by how dependent she is on you. It seems that beyond you saving her, it’s because your Alpha pheromones don’t feel aggressive to her. It makes her feel safe. But this could lead to another situation…”
Guessing his meaning, Pei Suyu managed a bitter smile. “That she’ll have heat reactions toward me? Or even develop feelings?”
Chen nodded. “It’s a dilemma. You are the only one who can stabilize her, but you are also the one most likely to trigger her chaotic pheromones.”
Pei Suyu wasn’t sure if this was good news or bad. Ultimately, when Gan Feng arrived and heard the report, she considered it in silence for a long time. She thanked Pei Suyu once more for saving her daughter but pointedly did not ask her to visit again.
Pei Suyu understood the choice. To a mother like Gan Feng, having an Alpha around who could trigger her daughter’s heat at any moment was far more dangerous than the benefit of emotional stability.
This came as a relief to Pei Suyu. In her heart, she still wanted to keep her distance.
The next day, Gan Lu left the class group chat. Pei Suyu later learned that Gan Feng, worried about her daughter’s safety at school, had arranged a temporary leave of absence.
After that, news of Gan Lu stopped coming. About a week later, Pei Suyu received a call from the police. They had caught the Alphas who had tried to assault Gan Lu at the bar and needed her to testify.
Her memory was sharp; she easily identified the ringleaders. Being mere thugs, they confessed quickly.
The female Omega officer she had met earlier even sent a “Good Samaritan” banner to her school. From the officer, Pei Suyu learned the culprit who drugged Gan Lu was actually a female classmate. During a secret party at the bar, the girl had acted out of pure malice, fueled by jealousy because her crush had been paying attention to Gan Lu.
Pei Suyu wasn’t surprised. In the original plot, that classmate was a disposable character, a pawn for Gan Lu’s calculating sister, Gan Hu. Unfortunately, because Gan Hu had only used manipulation and never laid a hand on the drug herself, there was no evidence against her.
At least Gan Lu had gained something from this; Gan Feng would likely keep a much tighter leash on her now. Perhaps she could escape her tragic fate after all.
Pei Suyu wasn’t an overly sentimental person. After a brief moment of reflection, she pushed the matter to the back of her mind and focused on her own life.
The period of online teaching was ending, and her school was set to reopen fully the following week. She had planned to spend her final two days of freedom resting, until she got a call from Jing Xin.
“Cousin, are you free? Come grab a drink. There’s a group of pretty Omegas coming over tonight!”
Pei Suyu couldn’t help but chuckle. Jing Xin was her cousin in this world and the owner of the Nightfall Bar. To use the family’s words, she was “unproductive”—a total delinquent who spent her days messing around. Though nowadays, she was the “Big Boss” of the local scene.
Originally, their personalities were polar opposites, and their relationship was cold. That changed after a funny incident shortly after Pei Suyu transmigrated. Feeling down, Pei Suyu had gone to the bar to drink, only to be spotted by Jing Xin. Shocked that her “good girl” cousin was a secret drinker, Jing Xin immediately joined her, promising to keep her rebellious nature a secret.
Pei Suyu hadn’t refused, and she had proceeded to drink Jing Xin under the table. From then on, Jing Xin viewed her as a soulmate, constantly dragging her out for drinks.
No one knew that before she transmigrated, Pei Suyu had also been a reckless delinquent. It wasn’t until she met someone very important to her that she turned her life around. She had even become a teacher to follow in that person’s footsteps. Unfortunately…
Thinking of the past made her feel a bit nostalgic, so she accepted the invitation.
Around ten o’clock that night, Pei Suyu walked into the Nightfall Bar. The crowd was starting to pick up, and the music was thumping. Not being a fan of loud crowds anymore, she sat in a quiet corner booth Jing Xin had reserved for her.
Watching the young people dancing wildly on the floor, she couldn’t help but feel that she had truly grown old.
She gave a bitter laugh and was about to look away when a familiar figure caught her eye.
In the middle of the dance floor, Gan Lu was bobbing her head and dancing erratically. The flashing lights occasionally illuminated her bright red face; she was clearly very drunk.
A female Alpha, half a head taller than her, was trying to drag her away while Gan Lu shoved her back with clumsy movements. Watching from the sidelines, Pei Suyu felt a sudden, inexplicable surge of anger.
Does this girl ever learn her lesson?
