- Chapter 19 - Let Me Guess Which Trick You Used?
The moment Gan Lu stepped into the luxurious foyer, she saw her sister, Gan Hu, sitting on the sofa scrolling through her phone. She offered a casual greeting, “Sis, haven’t you gone back to school yet?”
Gan Hu looked up and gave her a gentle smile. “I’m staying for the weekend. I want to spend more time with Mom Lin.”
At the mention of Mom Lin, Gan Lu’s expression dimmed. Gan Hu noted the reaction, turned her head away, and allowed a smug smirk to pull at the corners of her lips.
Ever since this sister returned, she had first stripped Gan Hu of her status as the eldest miss of the family, and then quickly siphoned away Gan Feng’s affection. No matter how much trouble the pampered brat caused, Gan Feng was always there to clean up the mess.
Meanwhile, from the moment her true identity was revealed, Gan Hu had been forced to live cautiously, working tirelessly to be perfect just to earn a shred of approval. Yet no matter how hard she tried, the Gan family’s eyes were always on Gan Lu. How could she not feel resentful?
That night at the bar, she had intended to use a classmate’s jealousy to ruin Gan Lu’s reputation. She hadn’t expected Pei Suyu to jump out of nowhere and ruin her plans—a memory that still made her teeth itch with rage.
Pushing those thoughts aside, Gan Hu walked over to Gan Lu with a look of feigned concern. “Lu Lu, are you and Teacher Pei really that close? You’re an Omega, after all. Spending the night at an Alpha’s house isn’t exactly safe. Mom would be worried if she knew.”
“I know,” Gan Lu replied absentmindedly, looking at Gan Hu with hesitation. She was never one who could keep a secret; thinking of what Pei Suyu had told her the previous night, she couldn’t help but want to ask.
Having lived together for so long, Gan Hu knew her personality inside out. She smiled and asked, “What is it? Is there something you can’t tell your sister?”
The question swirled in Gan Lu’s mind before she finally stammered out, “Sis… how have things been with Sister Jiang lately?”
“Why are you asking about that out of the blue?” Gan Hu scrutinized her sister, sensing that Gan Lu was acting out of character today.
Gan Lu, incapable of being disingenuous, let the truth spill out. “Sis, if you’re dating Sister Jiang, why are you… with someone else?” As she reached the end of the sentence, her face flushed with embarrassment.
Gan Hu’s mind raced. Pei Suyu must have told Gan Lu about her and Yu Wen last night. Her blabbermouth of a sister had then likely spilled the beans about Jiang Huiyun, and that Teacher Pei had immediately pierced through her two-timing scheme.
Normally, Gan Hu wouldn’t deign to explain herself to Gan Lu, but she needed to maintain the facade of a harmonious sisterly relationship. She couldn’t let this fool become wary of her. She explained patiently, “Huiyun and I have been having some problems lately… surely you can understand, right?”
Gan Lu shook her head honestly. “Even if there are problems, you shouldn’t do that. You should talk to Sister Jiang properly. If it really doesn’t work out, you can break up before finding someone else. Doing it this way… it’s really not right.”
Gan Hu rolled her eyes internally. This idiot couldn’t even pick up on an obvious brush-off and actually wanted to have a serious debate about “boring” relationship ethics.
Suppressing her disgust, Gan Hu offered a perfunctory reply. “I understand. I’ll have a good talk with Huiyun. Just… don’t tell Mom about this, okay? She’d be very upset.”
“Oh.” Hearing the impatience in her sister’s tone, Gan Lu uncharacteristically chose to stay silent.
Her little brain truly couldn’t grasp it. Shouldn’t dating be a devoted, one-on-one affair? Her sister seemed so smart; how could she do something like that? For the first time, the simple Gan Lu began to wonder if she truly knew her sister at all.
Just then, the sound of a car parking came from outside. The two sisters looked at each other; they both knew there was only one person who would be returning at this hour: Gan Feng.
Sure enough, Gan Feng entered the house a moment later. She paused when she saw Gan Hu. “Gan Hu, you’re back as well.”
Gan Hu smiled. “I got a call from Dr. Lin, so I hurried back to see Mom Lin.”
Gan Feng nodded. “I’ve already been to the hospital. Your mother’s condition has stabilized; she’s out of danger for now.”
The exchange made Gan Lu’s heart sink. she hung her head, looking utterly piteous.
Recalling her conversation with Pei Suyu, Gan Feng’s heart softened. She walked over and patted Gan Lu’s shoulder. “Lu Lu, don’t be sad. Once Mom Lin is more stable, I’ll take you to see her. When she’s lucid, she often talks about you.”
Gan Lu looked up, her face lighting up. “Really?”
“Of course it’s true.” Gan Feng smoothed her daughter’s hair with a tender smile. “You’re our daughter, after all. Your mother was just overwhelmed by the shock and couldn’t control herself. She truly loves you.”
“That’s wonderful!” Gan Lu looked at her mother expectantly. “Then… can I go with you next time?”
“Of course. Let’s go upstairs; I need to talk to you about your schooling.”
Gan Feng put an arm around Gan Lu’s shoulder and led her upstairs. Downstairs, the forgotten Gan Hu stared at their departing backs, a look of pure, poisonous resentment flashing across her face.
It was always like this. She worked tirelessly to be perfect, yet Gan Feng’s attention was always anchored to Gan Lu. Gan Hu clenched her fists. She would never let the relationship between Gan Lu and Mom Lin mend.
In this family, Mom Lin was her only leverage. If Gan Lu took her away too, how could she survive in this house?

Upstairs, Gan Feng pulled her daughter into the bedroom. She noted the family portrait on the desk and spent a few more minutes comforting her.
Gan Lu wiped her face and insisted, “It’s okay, Mom. I’m really not sad anymore. I was just a little upset yesterday, but I’m fine now.”
Gan Feng pulled her into a hug. “Lu Lu, remember that I love you most of all. You can always tell me if anything is wrong. You don’t need to… bother Teacher Pei all the time. She’s a very busy person, after all.”
Hearing the request to stop bothering Pei Suyu, Gan Lu felt a pang of unwillingness, but she nodded obediently. I can always go see her in secret, she thought.
Once she saw that her daughter had calmed down, Gan Feng brought up the school situation again. “I’ve already spoken with Professor Liu. Since the semester hasn’t officially started, you’ll go to a preparatory class run by one of her students first. It’ll help you stabilize your foundation before you officially enter the Art School at Kyoto University after the summer.”
After everything that had happened, Gan Lu had matured somewhat. She didn’t throw a fit and simply agreed to her mother’s arrangement.
Gan Feng was surprised at how smoothly the conversation went. She realized that spending time with Teacher Pei had actually made her daughter more sensible. For a moment, she wondered if her decision to keep them apart was the right one.
We’ll take it one step at a time, she thought with a sigh. “Pack your things. I’ll have Secretary Lin drive you over in a couple of days. Be good while you’re there, and call me if you need anything.”
Gan Lu watched her mother leave.
She didn’t particularly care where she went to school or what she studied; she was just happy that she’d finally get to see Mom Lin. Gan Feng said Mom Lin missed her! She was genuinely thrilled.
Excited, she wanted to share the news with someone. She pulled out her phone to message Pei Suyu, but the thought of the “little surprise” she’d left made her cheeks heat up. She decided to tell Ying Zi instead.
She shared her joy with her mysterious friend. A moment later, Ying Zi replied with a leisurely: [Ying Zi]: Go ahead and be a happy idiot, then.
[Gan Lu]: What’s that supposed to mean?
[Ying Zi]: It means you should manage your expectations. Your mom is likely just comforting you; don’t get your hopes too high.
[Gan Lu]: You really can’t say anything nice, can you? (Literally: “Ivory doesn’t grow in a dog’s mouth.”)
[Ying Zi]: I’m speaking from experience. The higher the hope, the greater the disappointment.
Gan Lu finally caught the subtext. [Gan Lu]: You keep saying you can see the future. Are you predicting my future? Is my meeting with Mom Lin not going to go well?
Ying Zi didn’t reply for a long time.
Gan Lu felt a wave of dejection. Sigh. I got excited for nothing.
A while later, Ying Zi abruptly changed the subject. [Ying Zi]: Let’s talk about something happy. How are things with Teacher Pei?
The thought of the surprise returned, making Gan Lu’s cheeks warm. [Gan Lu]: I left her a little surprise, the way you taught me. I’m just worried she’ll be mad.
[Ying Zi]: Let me guess which trick you used?
Gan Lu was ready to type out a sarcastic “You’ll never guess,” but before she could, another message appeared.
[Ying Zi]: Is it a drawing?
Gan Lu completely wilted. [Gan Lu]: Ying Zi, are you a tapeworm in my stomach? How did you get it right on the first try?
Ying Zi replied with a string of “hahahas,” ignoring the question. She told Gan Lu to let her know how Teacher Pei reacted to the surprise.
Gan Lu started to feel nervous again. Teacher Pei wouldn’t be mad… would she?
