- Chapter 18 - What is the Surprise?
Due to some unknown restriction, Pei Suyu could only access a portion of the original novel’s plot.
The narrative cut off just as the antagonist, Gan Hu, successfully framed Gan Lu and handed her over to a sadistic Alpha. Traumatized and broken, Gan Lu “blackened” and embarked on a self-destructive path of vengeance, manipulating Alphas to achieve her goals.
Pei Suyu had no idea what happened next—what methods Gan Lu used, or if her revenge was even successful.
But after spending so much time with her, Pei Suyu could no longer view Gan Lu as a mere collection of character traits. The person before her was a living, breathing girl—someone who cried, laughed, and acted spoiled.
Pei Suyu closed the book and began to analyze the catalysts for Gan Lu’s downfall.
First, there was the incident at the bar where she was drugged and assaulted, ruining her reputation and causing a rift with her mother, Gan Feng. This sparked a vicious cycle of disappointment and rebellion.
The final straw was Gan Hu gradually winning their mother’s trust at the company while Gan Lu’s behavior became increasingly erratic. Eventually, Gan Hu orchestrated the encounter with the sadistic Alpha. When Gan Lu tried to speak out, no one believed her; they simply assumed her “promiscuous” nature had led her to that end. That was the moment of total collapse.
The bar incident has already been changed by my arrival, Pei Suyu thought. The Gan Lu of today was still innocent and vibrant—a bit pampered, yes, but fundamentally good. If I can prevent her from being handed over to that monster, can I completely rewrite her destiny?
Pei Suyu stepped out of the study. She had intended to sleep in the guest room, but for some reason, her footsteps faltered at the master bedroom door. She eased it open.
The girl on the bed was tossing restlessly, her brows knit tight. She was mumbling in her sleep. Pei Suyu leaned in and caught the words: “Don’t… don’t leave me. Mom… Sister… please!”
Gan Lu bolted upright. Seeing Pei Suyu by the bed, she thought she was still dreaming and lunged into the Alpha’s arms. Feeling the solid warmth of the embrace, she whispered in disbelief, “Teacher Pei? Is it really you?”
“Did you have a nightmare?” Pei Suyu asked softly.
Gan Lu nodded. Seeing that she wasn’t being pushed away, she shamelessly snuggled deeper, wrapping her arms tightly around Pei Suyu’s waist.
Pei Suyu pulled her back down into the covers. “Go back to sleep. I’ll stay here with you.”
“Teacher Pei… you’re so good to me.”
Overwhelmed by the sudden tenderness, Gan Lu lay obediently in her arms. It wasn’t long before she fell into a deep sleep, though her hand remained clutched around Pei Suyu’s arm, as if she were terrified of being let go.
Watching her peaceful face, Pei Suyu’s gaze shifted. Her resolve to stay distant began to waver. Perhaps it was exhaustion, or perhaps it was something else, but she suddenly lost the desire to move. She adjusted herself into a comfortable position and fell asleep with the girl in her arms.
The next morning, Pei Suyu was awakened by the ringing of her phone. She rolled over and realized the bed beside her was already empty.
She answered Gan Feng’s call. “CEO Gan, you’re looking for Gan Lu, I assume? She’s here with me.”
“Teacher Pei,” Gan Feng’s voice came through. “Please have Lu Lu pick up.”
At that moment, hearing the commotion, Gan Lu ran into the room. Pei Suyu put the call on speaker.
“Mom, I’m here,” Gan Lu answered.
“Lu Lu, what is this? Your sister said you left in the middle of the night with—” Gan Feng paused, remembering Pei Suyu was listening. “Bothering Teacher Pei in the middle of the night… what were you thinking? Get home as soon as possible. I’m returning today; we need to have a serious talk about your schooling.”
Gan Lu’s shoulders slumped. “Fine, I hear you.”
Knowing it was unprofessional to have resigned as a tutor and then taken the daughter home, Pei Suyu felt she owed an explanation. “CEO Gan, I have a few things I’d like to discuss with you privately.”
After getting the green light, Pei Suyu left Gan Lu and went into the study. She explained why she had brought Gan Lu home the night before.
“CEO Gan, it’s not my place to interfere in your family matters,” she said diplomatically. “But I believe Lu Lu is deeply insecure due to her childhood trauma. I wonder if this is contributing to her medical condition?”
Gan Feng let out a heavy sigh. “So she told you… the poor child has had it hard since she was small. I’ve been so busy with work; perhaps I haven’t given her enough attention.”
Remembering Gan Lu crying for her mother in her sleep, Pei Suyu blurted out on an impulse, “Have you considered letting her see her biological mother? They share a bond of blood; perhaps there’s a chance for reconciliation.”
There was a long silence on the other end.
Pei Suyu realized she had overstepped. “I apologize. I’m overstepping. I’ll send Gan Lu home shortly.”
Gan Feng didn’t comment, and the call ended.
Pei Suyu turned around to find a small, round head peeking through the doorway. The girl clearly thought her “disguise” was flawless.
Pei Suyu walked over and gave the girl’s forehead a playful flick. “Quite the eavesdropper, aren’t you?”
“I wasn’t—” Gan Lu started to defend herself, but catching the light in Pei Suyu’s eyes, she realized her teacher was just teasing. She immediately grabbed Pei Suyu’s arm. “Teacher Pei, what did you say to my mom? Tell me! Please?”
“You really want to know?”
“Yes, yes!” Gan Lu nodded vigorously.
Pei Suyu paused for effect. “Nothing much. She just wants me to send you home.”
Gan Lu completely withered. “Sigh… I thought it was something big. I got excited for nothing.”
Seeing her dejected look, Pei Suyu laughed softly. She led her out, got into the car, and drove her back.
Along the way, Gan Lu was quiet, looking like she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words. During a red light, Pei Suyu glanced at her. “What is it?”
Gan Lu looked back with sparkling eyes. “Teacher Pei… if I go back to school, will you come to see me?”
“And where exactly would you be going to school?” Pei Suyu asked. She had been her tutor for only a few days, but knowing how “ruined” her academic foundation was, she couldn’t imagine which school would take her.
“Teacher Pei! Does your conscience not hurt when you put me down like that?” Gan Lu complained. “What do you mean ‘where’?”
“Alright, alright. My mistake,” Pei Suyu said, not even noticing the protective tenderness in her own voice. “Where are you going, then?”
“Kyoto University,” Gan Lu said, puffing out her chest with pride.
Pei Suyu paused. “Exactly how much money did your mother pay?”
“Teacher Pei!” The girl was on the verge of tears.
“I can’t in good conscience believe you got in on your own merit,” Pei Suyu noted.
Gan Lu huffed. “I’m going to the Art School at Kyoto University! Mom said a professor saw my drawings and loved them. He said I’m a ‘raw talent’ and specifically recruited me!”
That story probably only works on an idiot like you, Pei Suyu thought with an internal chuckle. Clearly, Gan Feng was relieved that Gan Lu had finally given up on her stubborn “self-study” goal and used her connections to shove the girl into a spot so she wouldn’t stay home and be an embarrassment.
Pei Suyu suppressed the urge to be sharp-tongued. Since she couldn’t bring herself to offer a fake compliment, she settled for: “Well, you might be a bit… dim, but if you work hard, you can still make progress.”
The girl shut down completely, turning her head away and refusing to speak.
When the car finally stopped at the villa, Pei Suyu leaned over and patted the girl’s head. “Are you really that mad?”
Gan Lu turned back and suddenly threw her arms around Pei Suyu’s neck. Pei Suyu froze. A faint scent drifted into her nose, and she felt a warm breath against her ear as the girl’s voice trembled slightly.
“Teacher Pei… I’m not mad. I’m just sad that I won’t get to see you.”
Pei Suyu’s hardened heart melted instantly. She sighed. “I’ll find time to visit you.”
Gan Lu perked up immediately. A flash of cunning crossed her innocent, deer-like eyes. “Teacher Pei, I left a surprise under your pillow. You have to look at it when you get back, okay?”
With a red face, she hopped out of the car and waved. “I’m going home now. Goodbye, Teacher Pei!”
Feeling the lingering warmth of the embrace, Pei Suyu smiled. She was genuinely curious—what kind of surprise would it be?
