- Chapter 15 - Either a Closet Pervert or a Refined Scoundrel
Gan Lu let out a long breath of relief after hanging up the phone. She had been so nervous just now.
The moment Teacher Pei’s face went stern, Gan Lu almost lost her ability to speak clearly. Fortunately, she was quick-witted enough to scramble for an excuse. However, her original plan was now a total failure, which was a bit of a shame.
She stretched comfortably and sank back into the bathtub, her toes aimlessly playing with the bubbles. The shifting water faintly outlined her seductive silhouette. While leisurely splashing her legs, she sent a voice note to Ying Zi.
“Ying Zi, our plan failed.”
“What happened?”
“I sent Teacher Pei a photo of the test paper, but before I could start my act of ‘getting a fever from studying all night,’ she hit me with a video call,” Gan Lu explained. “I was splash-happy in the bath; she’d never believe I was sick now.”
Ying Zi: “Shouldn’t the main point be that your Teacher Pei opened a video call while you were showering?”
Gan Lu: “So what? It’s not like she hasn’t seen it before.”
Ying Zi was rendered speechless by her nonchalance. “Did she have any unusual reactions this time?” she asked irritably.
Gan Lu tilted her head, thinking. She slapped her forehead. “Oh! I remember. She seemed a bit annoyed. Her tone was sarcastic, and she kept mocking me.”
Ying Zi let out a playful chuckle. “This Teacher Pei of yours is interesting.”
“What do you mean?”
“Heh… she’s either a closet pervert or a ‘refined scoundrel’ type.” Ying Zi paused, her tone turning serious. “Given how many chances she’s had to devour you and hasn’t, she clearly doesn’t mean you any harm.”
The cryptic analysis was a bit over Gan Lu’s head. She asked directly, “So what do I do now?”
“Find an opportunity to hang around her place,” Ying Zi advised. “I can tell she’s not entirely unmoved by you.”
“Really?” Gan Lu perked up instantly.
“Alright, I have to go. I’ve got another call coming in.”
With that, Ying Zi hung up. Encouraged, Gan Lu’s mood danced again. She finished her bath, wrapped herself in a pink bunny towel, and walked out.
Back in her bedroom, Gan Lu dried her hair and stared at her test papers with a look of profound misery.
Fortunately, Pei Suyu sent over the solution steps. Gan Lu studied them patiently, and surprisingly, the logic began to click. She actually solved the problem. Feeling a small sense of achievement, she messaged Pei Suyu: Thank you, Teacher Pei! Your explanation was amazing.
Pei Suyu didn’t reply. Gan Lu was a tiny bit upset.
She spent the rest of the day idling around until after dinner. She went for a walk and returned to find her sister, Gan Hu, on the balcony making a call. Gan Lu froze. Gan Hu was a freshman at Kyoto University and usually only returned on weekends. Why was she home on a Thursday?
“Hey, Sis? Why are you back?”
Gan Hu turned around. The call had ended. She walked over to Gan Lu and let out a sigh. “Dr. Su just called. He said Mom’s condition has worsened again, so I came back to check on her.”
A flicker of hurt crossed Gan Lu’s face. After a long silence, she asked in a small voice, “How… how is Auntie doing?”
Gan Hu patted Gan Lu’s shoulder. “She’s alright now. Dr. Su gave her a sedative, and she was asleep by the time I arrived. Do you want to go see her with me tomorrow?”
“N-no thanks!” Gan Lu shook her head frantically, looking flustered. “She doesn’t like me. If I go, her condition might get worse.”
“But you’re her biological daughter, after all. You can’t avoid each other forever.” Gan Hu’s words sounded sincere, but every syllable was a calculated jab at Gan Lu’s heart.
“No… I won’t go. You take care of her, Sis. I’m going to sleep. You should rest early too.”
Gan Lu stumbled back a step and ran to her room, her face pale. The moment she turned her back, a look of smug, cruel satisfaction appeared on Gan Hu’s face.
Inside her bedroom, Gan Lu stood frozen in front of her bookshelf. After a long daze, she stood on her tiptoes and pulled down a light blue photo album from the top shelf. It was covered in a thin layer of dust. She didn’t mind; she blew it clean and opened it.
The first page was a large family portrait. A family of four, smiling happily. In the photo, two beautiful young women each held a little girl. One girl had a ponytail; the smaller one had twin braids. Upon closer inspection, the girl with braids shared a resemblance to Gan Lu, and the woman holding her looked exactly like a younger Gan Feng.
Gan Lu’s slender fingers gently brushed the image of the gentle woman standing next to Gan Feng. Tears began to fall. “Mom Lin… Sister… it’s all my fault.”
When Gan Lu was five, she had snuck out to play. Her older sister went to find her, and both were kidnapped by human traffickers. The sister, who was twelve and beautiful, was abused to death. Gan Lu, being younger, was sold to a childless couple.
After the sisters vanished, their mothers, Gan Feng and Lin Shuwuan, searched frantically. Eventually, the trauma caused Lin Shuwuan to spiral into a state of intermittent insanity.
Years later, a trafficker, greedy for the high reward money, sent back “Gan Hu” to impersonate the lost daughter. However, the meticulous Gan Feng quickly noticed discrepancies. She investigated, caught the traffickers, and finally found the real Gan Lu.
But five years had passed. The mentally unstable “Mom Lin” had already formed a deep bond with the impostor, Gan Hu. When the truth was revealed, the shock—coupled with the news of her eldest daughter’s death—caused Lin Shuwuan to collapse again. She projected all her grief and resentment onto Gan Lu, refusing to even let the girl call her “Mother.” In the end, because of Lin’s fragility, Gan Hu wasn’t sent away and became Gan Lu’s non-biological sister.
To ease the tension, Gan Feng arranged separate living quarters so the two wouldn’t meet often. She also tried to compensate Gan Lu with excessive indulgence, which shaped Gan Lu’s current personality.
But tonight, Gan Hu’s words had reopened the old wounds. Gan Lu’s heart was simple—joy and sorrow were written plainly on her face. Feeling miserable, she needed someone to talk to.
She wanted comfort from her mother, but Gan Feng was on a business trip. She tried calling Ying Zi, but the line was busy. She called several times before finally getting through. Hearing the sob in her voice, Ying Zi asked urgently what was wrong.
Gan Lu spilled everything. “My sister went to see Mom Lin today. Her condition got worse again. I really want to see her, but I’m scared. Do you think… she’ll ever forgive me? I really didn’t mean it.”
“Your sister is stirring up trouble again,” Ying Zi’s voice was like a layer of ice—completely devoid of warmth.
“It’s not Gan Hu’s fault. She works so hard taking care of Mom Lin. It’s all my fault,” Gan Lu blamed herself. She just wanted someone to talk to, not to point fingers.
But before they could talk further, more calls kept beeping in on Ying Zi’s end. The person calling her was being relentless.
Ying Zi had no choice but to soothe her. “I have to take this call. I’ll call you back in a bit. Don’t overthink things, okay? This isn’t your fault.”
Ying Zi hung up after several worried reminders. Gan Lu sighed in frustration. How is Ying Zi so busy? She’s probably out pestering some Omega.
Realizing that if Ying Zi truly had a lover, she needed to keep her distance, Gan Lu felt a small pang of loss. Her mood grew even more somber. She scrolled aimlessly through her contacts, skipping over her best friend Lin Lin, and finally stopped at the name: Pei Suyu.
I wonder if Teacher Pei will talk to me?
She touched the screen, called, then cancelled—repeating the cycle several times. Finally, whether by accident or intent, the call went through.
Pei Suyu answered quickly. “Is something wrong?”
The question was a bit blunt. Gan Lu bit her lip. “Teacher Pei… I want to see you.”
“What’s happened?”
“I… I’m so sad right now. I’m really, really sad.” Hearing Pei Suyu’s voice made her feel incredibly vulnerable. Her voice cracked as she pleaded, “Teacher Pei… please. Just stay with me for a bit? I’ll be good, I promise. I won’t make you mad. Please don’t hate me…”
Pei Suyu paused for a moment. “Where are you?”
******
Pei Suyu grabbed her car keys and headed out. Watching the trees flash by, she gave a bitter laugh. What is wrong with me? Running to a student’s house just because of one phone call.
It was something she never would have done before.
She drove fast. With light traffic, she made the forty-five-minute trip in thirty. Gan Lu’s location was a villa on a mountainside, a neighborhood for the ultra-wealthy.
As she marveled at the “humanity-defying” wealth of the area, she parked in front of Gan Lu’s villa. The moment she stepped out, she heard a series of… undignified sounds.
Do rich people have a hobby of being ‘wild mandarin ducks’ in public? (Euphemism for public trysts).
She smirked, ignoring the heated sounds, and walked toward the gate. But as she got closer, the noise grew clearer, and she finally spotted the source: a red sports car parked behind the villa.
The car door was slightly ajar, the interior light flickering. Two tangled silhouettes were visible, accompanied by occasional, high-pitched cries of “pleading.”
Pei Suyu stopped in her tracks, caught between advancing and retreating. Just then, an impatient Gan Lu provided the perfect assist—a loud ringtone pierced the quiet night. The “mandarin ducks” were startled. Pei Suyu politely turned her back and answered the call.
“I’m at your gate. I’ve run into a bit of a situation; come down and get me, or I won’t be able to get in.”
After hanging up, she waited for the people to leave. When she turned back, she saw a familiar face.
Two people were walking over. One was actually Gan Hu. She wore only a red camisole dress; her makeup was smudged, her lips were swollen and red, and her gait was noticeably awkward. The faint, lingering scent of an Omega’s pheromones clung to her.
Walking beside her was a woman about 170cm tall. she wore a black trench coat over a white t-shirt with a striking skull pendant. She had flaxen-colored wavy hair, exquisite makeup, and an imposing aura. Her hands were casually tucked into her pockets.
Gan Hu tried to grab her arm, but the woman coldly shrugged her off. Gan Hu’s eyes dimmed. She crossed her arms and walked toward Pei Suyu.
“Teacher Pei? What are you doing here at this hour?”
“Sorry for the intrusion,” Pei Suyu said. “Gan Lu called me. She sounded upset, so I came to check on her.”
Before Gan Hu could respond, the tall woman stepped forward. She scanned Pei Suyu with a neutral gaze and extended her hand. “Hello. I’m Yu Wen, Gan Hu’s girlfriend. Nice to meet you.”
“Pei Suyu.” Pei Suyu shook her hand.
Yu Wen’s lips curled into a smirk, and she suddenly increased the pressure of her grip. Pei Suyu blinked, then squeezed back. The two engaged in a silent test of strength. Finally, Yu Wen was the first to withdraw her hand.
“Enjoy your chat. I have things to do.”
“A-Wen…” Gan Hu tried to call her back, but Yu Wen didn’t look back.
Gan Hu gave an embarrassed smile and turned to Pei Suyu. “Teacher Pei, I’ll take you to Lu Lu.”
“Thank you.”
They had just entered the villa when Gan Lu came running out and dove into Pei Suyu’s arms.
“Teacher Pei! I missed you so much!”
“What’s wrong?” Pei Suyu asked, patting the girl’s back to comfort her.
Gan Lu stole a glance at Gan Hu and said bashfully, “Nothing, I was just unhappy. Teacher Pei, can I go back to your place? I don’t want to stay here.”
Gan Hu interjected, “What is it, Lu Lu? Who made you mad? It’s late; don’t go running off. The family will worry.”
Gan Lu looked down and said nothing, casting a pleading look at Pei Suyu. Having zero trust in the antagonist Gan Hu, Pei Suyu agreed without hesitation.
Gan Hu seemed exhausted and didn’t argue further, heading upstairs listlessly.
Once they were in the car, Gan Lu muttered curiously, “Sister was acting so strange today. Not only was she easy to talk to, but she looked so drained. And her walk was a bit weird…”
Pei Suyu thought of the “undignified” scene she’d witnessed and gave an awkward cough. “Have you met your sister’s girlfriend before?”
That Yu Wen woman definitely looked like she was up to no good.
“I’ve met her a few times,” Gan Lu thought about it. “Sister Jiang is great! She’s very gentle.”
Pei Suyu frowned. “Sister Jiang?”
Gan Lu was confused. “My sister’s girlfriend is named Jiang Huiyun. Why?”
