- Chapter 13 - Ugly or Not, You’re Blind Anyway
“Ugh, I’m going to explode!”
Inside the hospital ward, Gan Lu hung up the phone, so furious she wanted to hurl her mobile across the room. But the thought that it was a gift from Pei Suyu stopped her; she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
In the air, her pheromones began their frantic, chaotic cycling once more.
Eventually, they settled on a sharp, fiery chili scent.
“Hah! You pathetic coward,” Gan Lu muttered, scolding her own pheromones. “You’re only tough in front of me. If you’ve got the guts, go try being tough in front of Pei Suyu!”
She continued to berate her scent as if it were a sentient being. “Keep simping, why don’t you? See if she likes you back! She’s probably holding some other little Omega in her arms right now! A simp ends up with nothing. Try having some dignity for once!”
She rambled on in her soft, kitten-like voice for a long time. The more she thought, the more her heart ached, until the pheromones wilted into a dejected bitter melon scent. Gan Lu let out an annoyed huff.
“You ‘simp’ pheromones! Can you stop rubbing salt in my wounds? It hurts enough already, and you have to release such a foul smell. Can’t you be a simp for me for once and release something that makes me happy?!”
The smell of bitter melon only grew stronger.
Gan Lu puffed out her cheeks in frustration, kicked off her covers, and sat cross-legged on the bed in deep, somber thought.
No. No one was going to steal her Teacher Pei. At least, not until she was cured.
She had to pull herself together. Since she had already lured that “fox spirit” over here, she had to give her a proper warning and defend her territory as the “rightful” one.
A flash of ruthlessness crossed Gan Lu’s face just as the nurse pushed open the door. The nurse frowned. “What is that smell?”
Gan Lu turned her head away with a haughty expression. “Bitter melon. It’s a very unique, independent pheromone scent. You got a problem with it?”
“No, no,” the nurse waved her hands, lying through her teeth. “Actually, if you smell it long enough, it’s quite… special.” She couldn’t bring herself to say “pleasant.”
Gan Lu gave a sharp tsk. “What are you in here for? Something wrong?”
“There’s a girl named Han Shasha outside,” the nurse said. “She says she’s here to return a phone.”
Gan Lu perked up instantly. “Let that fox— I mean, let her in.”
Han Shasha pushed the door open and was immediately greeted by the stinging scent of bitter melon. Sitting on the bed was a girl who looked like she was about to pop with anger. She was strikingly beautiful; her skin was as fine as exquisite porcelain, her features delicate, and her lips a vibrant red.
Though she still carried a hint of childishness and innocent charm, it was clear that once her features fully matured, she would be a breathtaking, “vibrant-type” beauty.
Feeling a pang of insecurity, Han Shasha averted her eyes. “Are you Miss Gan?”
“I’m Gan Lu.”
Gan Lu lifted her chin like a proud swan. She hopped off the bed and walked a circle around Han Shasha, staring her down with feigned disappointment.
“Tch. You’re not even as pretty as I am! I really don’t get how Teacher Pei could be interested in you.”
Han Shasha was mortified by the bluntness. Any curiosity she had about the situation evaporated. She placed the phone on the nightstand. “Here’s the phone. I have things to do, so I’ll be going.”
She turned to leave, but Gan Lu blocked the door with her arms spread wide. “Don’t you dare leave! You haven’t explained anything! How do you know Teacher Pei? What’s your relationship? Did she really… sleep with you?”
As she spoke, Gan Lu felt a wave of bitterness. Teacher Pei wouldn’t even share a bed with her. It was infuriating. Her pheromones shifted appropriately into a sour hawthorn scent—so tart it made one’s teeth ache.
Han Shasha looked at her in shock. “How does your scent keep changing like that?”
“Don’t try to change the subject! Answer me!” Gan Lu barked with “fierce” kitten energy.
Han Shasha hesitated. She could guess the dynamic now; this girl liked Teacher Pei, but Teacher Pei seemed to be trying to make her jealous on purpose. She wasn’t sure if she should tell the truth.
Gan Lu’s temper flared. “Speak up! Or I won’t be nice to you!”
Han Shasha sighed. “We’re just… friends. Maybe you should just ask Teacher Pei yourself.”
I don’t have the guts to ask her! Gan Lu grumbled internally, her face falling.
They began to scuffle as Han Shasha tried to leave and Gan Lu refused to let her. Eventually, their heads knocked together with a loud thwack. Both let out a pained “ow!” and recoiled, clutching their heads.
“What is your problem?!” Even the good-natured Han Shasha was getting angry now.
Gan Lu clutched her forehead and issued a brash threat: “I’m warning you! Stay away from Teacher Pei!”
“Why?”
Gan Lu’s tongue turned sharp. “Because Teacher Pei has very high standards. Even my incredibly rich and interesting pheromones can’t catch her interest. Your bland scent doesn’t stand a chance at this ‘hell-mode’ difficulty level.”
Han Shasha’s pheromones were a faint scent of green grass. It was true that Alphas rarely found it enticing, but having her wound poked like that made her retort sharply:
“Haha! That’s rich coming from someone who smells like bitter melon and sour hawthorn. At least my grass scent isn’t bitter or sour!”
“Liar! I have other scents!”
“I don’t believe you. If you’re so capable, switch out that tooth-aching sour smell!”
“Fine! Just you wait!” Gan Lu snapped back.
Then, she realized in despair that her pheromones changed with her mood. Right now, her heart was overflowing with “sour” jealousy; how could she possibly change it?
Han Shasha gave her a mocking look. Gan Lu was about to die of embarrassment when Pei Suyu’s phone suddenly rang. Both reached for it, but Gan Lu was faster.
The moment she answered, her nose crinkled and tears began to fall. “Teacher Pei! Are you trying to kill me with anger? How could you do this to me?”
Hearing the sobbing voice, the hungover Pei Suyu paused. “Gan Lu?”
“Mmm… it’s me,” Gan Lu hiccuped.
Pei Suyu’s brain finally cleared. “Why do you have my phone?”
Gan Lu launched into a triple-threat interrogation: “Teacher Pei, why didn’t you answer my calls? Who is this Han Shasha woman to you? Waaa… why did you sleep with her?!”
Her voice broke at the end. She sounded utterly, heartbreakingly devastated.
Han Shasha couldn’t take it anymore. She cut in: “Hello, Teacher Pei. This is Han Shasha. We had a drink earlier. I found your phone, and Miss Gan happened to call, so I brought it over. But… she seems to have misunderstood something and won’t let me leave. Can you come here?”
Pei Suyu processed the information quickly. “Stop making a scene,” she told Gan Lu in a low voice. “I’m coming over now.”
Half an hour later, Pei Suyu arrived at the VIP ward. She walked in to see the two girls sitting on opposite sides of the room, looking like they were from different worlds.
Before she could speak, Gan Lu leaped off the bed and—barefoot—flung herself into her arms. It was a blatant declaration of sovereignty. She rubbed her tears into Pei Suyu’s chest as usual, then stuck her tongue out at Han Shasha in a silent victory.
Han Shasha rolled her eyes and looked at Pei Suyu. “Teacher Pei, maybe you should explain tonight’s events to Miss Gan.”
The subtext: I haven’t said a word.
Pei Suyu pulled Gan Lu out of her arms, refusing to look into those watery eyes. She hardened her heart. “Gan Lu, don’t call me Teacher Pei anymore. I’ve already spoken to your mother. I won’t be your tutor anymore.”
“Why? Is it because I’m too dim?”
Gan Lu froze, tears welling up. “Teacher Pei, I’ll really work hard from now on. I won’t make you mad anymore. I’ll be good and listen to you. Please don’t leave me, okay?”
Pei Suyu couldn’t stand seeing her like this. Her resolve began to crumble, but she gritted her teeth. “There is no ‘why.’ I’m not ‘leaving’ you; I’m just not your tutor.”
“What’s the difference?!” Gan Lu’s eyes were red as she pointed angrily at Han Shasha. “Is it because of her? You’d rather sleep with her, but you won’t sleep with me! Is she prettier than me? Do her pheromones smell better?!”
To prove her point, Gan Lu’s pheromones began a rapid-fire rotation of the “Top Most Attractive Scents for Alphas” list. She shot Han Shasha a smug look. See? I’m not lying.
Han Shasha was speechless at the speed of the shifts.
Pei Suyu realized she had done something stupid after drinking and had dragged an innocent bystander into this farce. She took Han Shasha outside to apologize, exchanged contact info to thank her later, and sent her on her way.
Gan Lu remained inside, puffed up like a blowfish. When Pei Suyu returned, the girl was silently weeping, her shoulders shaking with every sob.
Pei Suyu’s cold heart melted completely. She grabbed a tissue, walked over, and gently lifted the girl’s chin to wipe the tears.
“Alright, stop crying. Your eyes will get all puffy and you won’t look pretty anymore.”
“I don’t care if I’m ugly! You’re blind anyway!”
“Mmm… Gan Lu.” Pei Suyu’s voice carried a hint of a threat. She was still a bit tipsy, and she put on a stern face.
Gan Lu let out a frightened hiccup. “Waaa! You’re being mean again! You bully me and then you’re mean to me! You sleep with others but not me…”
She cried even harder.
Pei Suyu: Sigh. Wipe tears. Repeat.
Ultimately, Pei Suyu didn’t explain the Han Shasha situation. Instead, she said heartlessly, “If you want to cry, cry all you want. I’m taking the phone.”
“Hic—” Gan Lu’s sobbing hit a snag. “Teacher Pei… why? Just tell me why.”
Pei Suyu didn’t know where to begin explaining her own inner conflict. She stayed silent.
When no answer came, Gan Lu stood her ground, waiting with red eyes. Finally, Pei Suyu turned and walked away.
Furious, Gan Lu hurled a pillow at the door. “Pei the Bastard! Go! Go and don’t come back! I’m the one dumping you!”
Waaa… but it hurts so much.
******
Pei Suyu left the hospital. The cold wind cleared the remaining alcohol from her mind. As she walked down the empty sidewalk, she felt a sudden, profound sense of loneliness.
Gan Lu was like a ball of fire—full of endless, chaotic energy. Like her name, she was an innocent, bumbling little deer.
Pei Suyu wasn’t sure if she could protect that innocence. She had chickened out.
She felt like having a cigarette, so she lit one. The faint glow at her fingertips flickered in the darkness as she walked with a nomadic stride, unsure of her destination.
Just like the girl she had given up on.
