- Chapter 12 - There Will Be No Good Ending for You Two
At the Nightfall Bar.
Pei Suyu’s phone had been ringing incessantly. Frustrated, she muted it, flipped it face-down on the table, and irritably yanked at the collar of her shirt. She tilted her head back and downed a shot of strong liquor.
Across from her, Jing Xin watched this uncharacteristic display with wide-eyed amazement. She felt like she barely recognized her cousin anymore.
Not only had Pei Suyu developed a taste for clubbing and drinking, but her combat prowess had skyrocketed, and she’d even picked up smoking. Normally, she looked like a refined, polite scholar, but the moment the music started and the booze hit, she transformed into a different person entirely.
Currently, she was leaning back against the leather booth, a drink in one of her long, slender hands and a cigarette in the other. Her shirt was rumpled, exposing her collarbones, and her sharp jawline was tilted slightly upward. Her narrowed eyes drifted aimlessly toward the dance floor. Occasionally, her moist red lips would exhale a cloud of smoke that blurred her features, completing the look of a perfect “refined scoundrel.”
Jing Xin nudged her with an elbow. “What’s the deal? You’ve been drinking like a fish since you walked in.”
Pei Suyu didn’t even lift an eyelid. She took another swig, staying silent for so long that Jing Xin thought she wouldn’t answer. Finally, a somber, low voice drifted through the haze.
“Jing Xin… I’ve realized my willpower isn’t as strong as I thought.”
Jing Xin’s interest flared. She didn’t tell her to stop; in fact, she topped off Pei Suyu’s glass and leaned in. “That sweet girl I let you take home—did you sleep with her?”
Realizing that opening her mouth had been a mistake, Pei Suyu immediately went silent again.
But Jing Xin wouldn’t let it go. She pestered her relentlessly. “Come on, spill it! Judging by your reaction, you wanted to but didn’t. What, was she underage? You couldn’t bring yourself to cross that line?”
“She’s an adult.”
“Then what are you hesitating for?! If you didn’t sleep with her even then, I’m starting to think you’re ‘incapable’.”
Pei Suyu looked pained. “You don’t understand. She’s my student. It’s my professional ethics.”
Jing Xin burst into a fit of laughter. “Hahaha! Professional ethics?! You’re killing me! You smoke, you drink, you pick up girls… and you claim you’re a ‘good teacher’?”
“Shut up!”
Pei Suyu was genuinely annoyed. Jing Xin stopped teasing her and asked seriously, “So, what’s the plan?”
“I’ve already called her mother. I can’t teach her anymore.” Pei Suyu gave a bitter laugh. “500,000 a month… it hurts just thinking about giving that up.”
“Holy crap!” Jing Xin was stunned. “Just how rich is this girl?!”
Pei Suyu didn’t answer. Jing Xin’s mind raced, and a wicked grin spread across her face. “Oh! So once you ‘resign,’ she’s not your student anymore. Does that mean the ‘ethics’ are gone and you can finally sleep with her?”
It wasn’t a question of whether she could sleep with her; it was a question of what happened after. Pei Suyu thought of Gan Lu and took another heavy gulp of alcohol, her heart tangled in a knot of indecision.
The girl was exactly her type—beautiful, sweet, with a bit of a kittenish temper. Raising a girl like that was incredibly enticing. But her talent for causing trouble was equally exhausting. One disaster after another was enough to give anyone a heart attack.
If she were the Pei Suyu from before she transmigrated, she would have just slept with her and dealt with the consequences later. But because of the book, she hesitated. If she touched the girl, she had to take responsibility, and she simply wasn’t ready to shoulder such a heavy burden.
Sleeping with a girl shouldn’t be this hard.
Pei Suyu crushed her cigarette. She stood up and saw the phone was still ringing.
“Still not picking up?” Jing Xin reached out and pulled the phone from the table. “Wow, she’s persistent. Over a dozen calls. If you two actually end up together, she’s going to be checking in on you five times a day.”
Pei Suyu was already irritated, and Jing Xin’s big mouth only made it worse. She was about to kick her cousin out of the booth when a female Omega walked over from the dance floor. The girl stopped a few meters away, chatting with someone but casting frequent glances toward Pei Suyu, looking like she was debating whether to approach.
Jing Xin, the veteran bar owner, saw the situation immediately. She patted Pei Suyu’s shoulder. “Cousin, your ‘peach blossom’ luck has arrived!”
With that, she made herself scarce.
Pei Suyu didn’t pay much attention until a soft voice spoke up.
“Excuse me… is anyone sitting here? May I join you?”
Pei Suyu looked up. A girl in a light green dress stood before her. She had smooth black hair and a delicate, innocent face that looked completely out of place in a bar. Her fingers were twisted nervously, and her eyes flitted between Pei Suyu and a group of people at the bar who were clearly cheering her on.
Pei Suyu tapped her fingers on the table, a playful smirk touching her lips. “Lost a game of Truth or Dare?”
The girl jumped at the sound of her voice, her words stumbling. “H-how did you know? I… I’m sorry to bother you.”
She looked like she was about to cry and turned to flee. In that moment, Pei Suyu saw a shadow of Gan Lu in her—except Gan Lu would have been shamelessly persistent instead of running away.
A faint smile touched Pei Suyu’s lips. She stopped the weeping girl. “Wait. What was your ‘punishment’?”
The girl blinked, stammering, “To… to have a drink with you.”
Pei Suyu raised an eyebrow. “That simple?”
Kids these days have quite a bit of restraint, she thought. When she was a delinquent, the dares were much wilder than that.
The girl’s face turned bright red. “A… a cross-cupped drink.” (Crossing arms to drink together).
Pei Suyu pressed a hand to her forehead. Alright, I take it back. Kids these days are definitely more bold.
Seeing her silence, the girl asked softly, “Is that okay?”
The phone buzzed again. The vibration made Pei Suyu’s hand on the table feel numb. She paused for a moment, then picked up the phone and handed it to the girl.
“Fine. But first, answer this for me.” Pei Suyu’s eyes turned cold and decisive. “Tell whoever is calling that we are in the middle of sleeping. Don’t let them disturb us.”
The girl was stunned. She didn’t react for a second.
“Unwilling?” Pei Suyu felt a flicker of disappointment, but also a strange sense of relief.
Just as she was about to pull the phone back, the girl grabbed it. “I… I’ll do it. Should I only say that? I’m afraid I’ll blow my cover if I say too much.”
Pei Suyu nodded. “Just say it and hang up.”
She couldn’t bring herself to be responsible for a girl’s entire future. If that was the case, she shouldn’t leave a single shred of hope for her.
The girl answered the call. A frantic, kitten-like voice on the other end shouted, “Teacher Pei!” The girl quickly recited the line Pei Suyu had given her. Before she could hang up, she heard the voice on the other end break into a piteous shriek: “Impossible! Teacher Pei obviously can’t—”
The girl handed the phone back, standing there awkwardly with her drink.
Pei Suyu took the phone and immediately turned it off. Then, she took the girl’s drink and poured a glass of low-alcohol fruit wine for her. She leaned down carelessly until she was eye-level with the girl, and with a calm, effortless grace, she finished the cross-cupped drink. The girl kept her head down the entire time, her movements stiff with nerves.
Pei Suyu set the glass down and leaned back into the sofa. The girl, seemingly coming back to life, whispered a “thank you” and bolted back to her friends.
Pei Suyu chuckled to herself and didn’t give the incident another thought. She continued to drink several more beers alone. Several people tried to approach her, but they were all scared off by her cold, “stay away” aura.
Soon, the alcohol began to cloud her mind. Her remaining logic told her to stop, so she stood up, said a few words to Jing Xin, and headed to the second-floor guest room to sleep. In her haze, she completely forgot her phone on the table.
The girl from earlier, Han Shasha, returned a few minutes later to see if Pei Suyu was still there. Finding the booth empty, she looked disappointed, but then she spotted the phone in the corner. She picked it up, hesitating before turning it back on. The owner will probably call, she thought.
Within a minute of turning it on, the phone rang. The caller ID: Gan Lu.
Recognizing the name, the girl felt a surge of guilt. After a long pause, she answered.
“Hello…”
Before she could finish, Gan Lu’s voice exploded through the speaker like a machine gun. “Who are you?! Are you with Teacher Pei? Why isn’t she answering? Are you… are you really sleeping with her?!”
Han Shasha panicked, her explanation stumbling. “My name is Han Shasha. Tea… Teacher Pei just left. She forgot her phone here.”
Remembering their “deal,” she didn’t sell Pei Suyu out.
Gan Lu was stunned. Then she shouted into the phone, “Listen to me, Han Shasha! I don’t care how you know Teacher Pei, but she cannot give you happiness!
Think about it! If you sleep with her today, it’ll just be a ‘pure’ chat under the blankets. Imagine doing that every single day—how could anyone stand it?!
The wise do not fall in love! You cannot jump into such a ‘fire pit’ just because you’re infatuated with her looks! Love is the union of soul and body; if you’re missing one, it’s incomplete! There will be no good ending! Teacher Pei… she’s really not right for you!”
Because she’s “incapable”!!
Han Shasha was completely bewildered by the verbal assault. She whispered, “I’m sorry, I don’t really understand what you mean?”
“Tell you what,” Gan Lu panted, “Bring Teacher Pei’s phone to me. I’ll explain everything in detail.” She then rattled off an address.
Han Shasha hesitated, then decided to go. She was actually quite curious to find out what exactly was going on between these two.
