- Chapter 10 - The Mysterious Stranger
“Ying Zi” (Shadow) was a mysterious friend Gan Lu had met two years ago. Not only did she wrap herself up so tightly that it was impossible to see her face, but she also spoke like some kind of oracle, claiming she had the ability to predict the future.
At first, Gan Lu didn’t believe a word of it, treating her like a lunatic. But as one prediction after another came true, Gan Lu began to fluctuate between skepticism and belief.
More than once, Gan Lu had tried to get a look at her, but Ying Zi was always vague. Even the name she gave sounded fake. Finally, annoyed by Gan Lu’s persistence, Ying Zi made a pact: once Gan Lu got into Kyoto University, she would finally show her face.
This agreement was a form of exquisite torture for Gan Lu. Yet, for some reason, she was obsessed with seeing Ying Zi. Perhaps it was because Ying Zi always gave her a strange sense of familiarity.
Pulling herself back from her thoughts, Gan Lu glanced toward the door. Is Teacher Pei asleep?
She hesitated, then replied: [Gan Lu]: I’m not at my own house right now. It might not be convenient to go out.
[Ying Zi]: I know you’re not home. Aren’t you at Pei Suyu’s place? I’m downstairs right now.
Gan Lu was genuinely shocked. Does she really have the power to see the future?
She immediately opened the window. As if they shared a telepathic bond, she instantly heard a few sharp honks from a car horn below.
Gan Lu didn’t hesitate any longer. She got up, slipped on her shoes, and cast one last cautious glance at Pei Suyu’s door. It remained tightly shut. Breathing a sigh of relief, she tiptoed out, eased the front door open, and hurried downstairs.
The moment the door clicked shut, Pei Suyu pushed her own door open and watched the girl’s departing silhouette. Her expression gradually darkened as she sank into thought.
What is this girl doing out in the middle of the night?
She wasn’t one to pry into others’ private lives, but considering Gan Lu’s talent for attracting trouble—and those strange honks from earlier—she felt uneasy. She pulled back the living room curtains and peered down through the window.
Gan Lu took the elevator down. As she stepped out of the building, she saw an arrogant-looking red sports car parked nearby.
Before she could even get close, the car door opened. A tall female Alpha stepped out. She wore a baseball cap pulled low over her brow and a black mask that covered most of her face, outlining a smooth, sharp jawline. All that was visible were her eyes—pitch black, with corners that tilted slightly upward, giving her a hint of allure that seemed atypical for an Alpha.
Seeing Gan Lu, she leaned lazily against the car door and gave a casual wave. “Lu Lu, come here.”
Gan Lu looked her up and down, her disappointment evident. “Sigh, you’re still as mysterious as ever. You’ve worn this same outfit since the first day we met. I’m starting to wonder if you ever wash your clothes.”
A flicker of amusement danced in Ying Zi’s eyes. “With a mouth like that, you really can’t say anything nice, can you?” she teased affectionately.
“Alright, enough joking.” Gan Lu turned serious for a change. She cast an uneasy glance up at the building and urged, “Why did you call me out so late? Hurry up and say it. I have to get back before I’m caught, or I’m dead.”
Ying Zi raised an eyebrow. “What? Are you that afraid of Pei Suyu?”
“Who isn’t afraid of their teacher?!” At the mention of Pei Suyu, Gan Lu wilted. She began to vent frantically. “You have no idea how miserable my day was. I wrote four entire test papers! When you messaged me, I was still stuck in that hellish testing cycle.”
Ying Zi listened, murmuring softly under her breath, “That shouldn’t be right… How is Pei Suyu already your tutor?”
Gan Lu didn’t catch the words. “What are you mumbling? And how did you know I was at Teacher Pei’s house anyway?”
She was dying of curiosity. But Ying Zi remained infuriatingly cryptic. “Because I can see the future. That’s why you must listen to me. Don’t be like last time—sneaking off to bars when I told you not to.”
Mentioning the bar made Gan Lu huff with annoyance. “Sigh. If I hadn’t been set up by that bitch and gotten Pheromone Disorder Syndrome, I wouldn’t have developed this dependency on Teacher Pei. I wouldn’t be forced to write all these exams. My life is so hard.”
Ying Zi shot her a thoughtful look. “Speaking of which, I’ve saved you more than once or twice. How come you haven’t developed any ‘ghostly dependency’ on me?”
“That… that’s different!” Fragments of memory seemed to hit Gan Lu; her face flushed slightly as she admitted, “I can’t explain why, but whenever I see Teacher Pei, my heart starts racing and I blush like an idiot. But when I see you, I just feel… familiar. Like I can trust you. I don’t get any of those weird physiological reactions.”
“So, I’m not worthy of making your heart throb?”
“Shut up! You know that’s not what I mean. I think of you as a friend.”
Gan Lu realized how embarrassing it was to discuss these things, so she let out an awkward cough. “Anyway, why did you call me down?”
Ying Zi turned mysterious again. “Nothing much. I just wanted to remind you that we might be meeting properly soon. When that happens, don’t be too surprised, and for heaven’s sake, don’t lose your composure.”
Gan Lu’s eyes widened with delight. “Really? When? Can I finally see your face? I don’t know why, but you’ve always felt so close to me.”
“You’ll know when the time comes.” Ying Zi didn’t elaborate. Instead, she cautioned, “This Teacher Pei of yours is a bit strange. You’d better keep an eye on her. Contact me if anything happens.”
“Why? Teacher Pei is great,” Gan Lu said, puzzled.
Ying Zi sighed helplessly. “Haven’t you noticed she has predatory designs on you? To put it simply, she’s attracted to your pheromones. She’s ‘craving’ your body.”
Gan Lu burst into laughter. “No way! Even if I stood naked in front of her, Teacher Pei wouldn’t be interested.”
Ying Zi stared at her with a look of pure exasperation, as if she were looking at an idiot.
Wounded by the gaze, Gan Lu argued back with full confidence. “Don’t believe me? Teacher Pei… she’s ‘incapable’!”
Ying Zi looked like she’d just heard a ridiculous joke. She remained noncommittal.
“It’s true!” Challenged by Ying Zi’s skepticism, Gan Lu launched into an exhaustive explanation. “I’m telling you, ever since she saved me at the bar, she’s shown zero interest. She even refuses to share a bed with me. And just now, when I suggested she watch some… you know, ‘adult films’ to help with her insecurity and find her ‘feelings,’ she basically agreed!”
Her unwavering conviction finally made Ying Zi waver. “She admitted she was ‘incapable’?”
Gan Lu nodded solemnly.
Ying Zi knit her brows in deep thought. She didn’t say anything else, only gave a final instruction: “It’s late. Go back and rest.”
Sigh… and she still had tests to finish.
Watching Ying Zi’s car disappear from sight, Gan Lu headed back upstairs. The thought of seeing Ying Zi’s true face soon made her heart dance with excitement. She had only agreed to get into Kyoto University because of their pact; she didn’t know why she had such a strange obsession, but she just had to know what Ying Zi looked like.
If I can see her face early, she thought, does that mean I don’t have to study so hard anymore?
Suddenly, Gan Lu saw a bright and beautiful future ahead of her.
She hummed a little tune as she entered the apartment. Then, she froze.
Pei Suyu was sitting on the sofa, leisurely sipping a cup of coffee. She had clearly just showered; she wore a light blue bathrobe that exposed her elegant neck. Her chin-length chestnut hair was slightly damp and curled at the ends, giving her a look of unrestrained, disheveled grace.
Pei Suyu took a slow sip, then looked up at Gan Lu with a half-smile. “Where have you been in the middle of the night?”
She had stood by the window for a while, observing the conversation. She had noted the license plate and had seen that the stranger didn’t seem to be taking Gan Lu away. She had then gone to shower, and her question now was merely to hear Gan Lu’s excuse.
Under Pei Suyu’s gaze, Gan Lu felt an instinctive surge of nerves. The Teacher Pei tonight looked completely different from her usual, formal self. That slight smile actually looked… wicked. It made Gan Lu’s heart skip a beat.
She lowered her head guiltily. After a long pause, she squeezed out: “I was just… a bit tired from studying. I went for a walk.”
It was a pathetic lie. Even if Pei Suyu hadn’t seen the truth with her own eyes, she could tell just by the way the girl’s eyes darted around.
Pei Suyu frowned. Usually, she wouldn’t interfere too much in Gan Lu’s life, but the way that stranger had been dressed left her with a very poor impression.
She stood up and approached Gan Lu. She reached out to pinch the girl’s chin, forcing their eyes to meet. “Student Gan,” she said in a low, resonant voice, “a good student doesn’t lie.”
Gan Lu was forced to look up. In Pei Suyu’s pupils, she saw her own flustered face. She could smell the scent of body wash—Teacher Pei’s scent.
The grip on her chin was a bit painful, but more than that, it was hot. The temperature of those fingertips felt like it could scorch her heart. She could hear her pulse thumping wildly. She nervously clutched her own chest.
She felt like she was about to…
Seeing Gan Lu staring at her as if she’d lost her soul, Pei Suyu felt a flash of irritation. Excellent. She’s daydreaming even now? She really doesn’t take me seriously at all!
She tightened her grip. Gan Lu let out a small cry of pain, bringing her back to reality. Pei Suyu let out a cold laugh. “Back with us?”
Gan Lu let out a piteous whimper. Her pheromones were too sensitive to Pei Suyu’s emotions; she knew her teacher was angry. She didn’t dare lie again. “I just… went to see a friend. Please don’t be mad.”
Hearing the truth, Pei Suyu didn’t press further. However, a thought occurred to her. “The ‘friend’ who trapped you into promising to get into Kyoto University? Why don’t you talk to her and pick a different school? Given your foundation…”
“Teacher Pei, do you really look down on me that much? Fine! I won’t take the test… I won’t take it at all, okay?!”
Gan Lu hated being called dim. Angrily, she shoved Pei Suyu aside and stomped toward her room—only to accidentally step on her injured foot.
“OW—!”
Before she could hit the floor, Pei Suyu caught her. Tumbling into her teacher’s arms, Gan Lu once again caught that scent of lavender body wash.
Pressed against Pei Suyu through her thin pajamas, Gan Lu’s skin felt like it was on fire. A strand of Pei Suyu’s damp hair brushed against her cheek, tickling her heart like a kitten’s claw.
Gan Lu clutched her racing heart and burst into tears of frustration. “Teacher Pei… I think my heat is back again!”
