Transmigrated as a Scummy Alpha: The Wife-Chasing Crematorium - Chapter 8
After leaving the living room, Mother Shen instructed Sun Xingchao to call for a five-star chef to prepare several Western courses. She then joined the family’s domestic helper to prepare a few home-cooked dishes, focusing mostly on the ones Shen Luoxi usually enjoyed.
Nearly an hour later, the meal was served. The chef and the helper stood respectfully in the background. Father Shen took the seat at the head of the table, with Mother Shen to his right. Shen Luoxi and Pei Yu sat side-by-side on his left.
“Dinner is a bit late, but you two should eat more. I’ve noticed you’ve both lost weight recently,” Mother Shen said caringly.
“I know, Mom. We’ll eat well,” Shen Luoxi replied. She picked up her knife and fork, cut the steak on her plate into neat bite-sized pieces, and placed it in front of Pei Yu. She then took Pei Yu’s uncut steak for herself and began eating.
Mother Shen watched with a look of pure gratification. “How wonderful. Luoxi has finally grown up; she knows how to dote on her wife now.”
Pei Yu forked a piece of steak and put it in her mouth. The skill of the five-star chef was undeniable; the meat was tender, succulent, and perfectly cooked.
After dinner, Mother Shen insisted they stay the night. Staying over naturally meant being ushered into the same room.
Will Pei Yu be afraid of me? This was Shen Luoxi’s primary concern.
Shen Luoxi’s room was the second door on the left of the second floor—a sprawling suite of over a hundred square meters. Upon entering, the curtains were drawn tight. Aside from the wall color and the warm crystal chandelier, most of the decor and furnishings were in shades of oppressive black and grey.
In her original life, Shen Luoxi had been paralyzed in bed for over a decade without developing such a dark temperament. She wondered how this world’s Shen Luoxi, raised by such cheerful parents, could be so gloomy. The author truly hadn’t explained much.
Click. The door opened.
Shen Luoxi turned to see Pei Yu. She stood in the doorway, her gaze dull as she looked at her. Her features were exquisite; even in such an ordinary moment, she was breathtaking.
“Have a seat. I’m going to tidy up a bit.”
Pei Yu didn’t understand what she meant. Shen Luoxi didn’t elaborate. She hung her coat on a rack, rolled up her shirt sleeves, and strode over to the bed. She pulled the neatly folded quilt down and spread it out on the floor, far away from the bed.
Next, she walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and yanked back the heavy black curtains with a loud shing. As the garden lights outside filtered in, the room was instantly infused with color.
Aside from the bed and the curtains, Shen Luoxi pointed out everything that looked depressing to the eye and had the guards stationed at the door haul it all away. She also asked the helper to bring a set of light-colored bedding.
The staff followed orders without question. They brought a new four-piece set from the linen room and spread it over the bed. The fresh colors made the room feel much more alive.
Once finished, the helpers turned to Shen Luoxi. “Is there anything else you need, Miss?”
“Bring up two glasses of water,” Shen Luoxi requested, feeling a bit thirsty.
“Yes, Miss.”
Once the helpers left, only the two of them remained. Pei Yu stood near the door, her hands hanging at her sides, still visibly on guard.
Shen Luoxi stayed where she was, maintaining a respectful distance. “Go ahead and rest. You take the bed; I’ll sleep on the floor. Don’t worry, I won’t disturb you tonight, and I won’t touch a single hair on your head. Just get some sleep.”
“Why?” Pei Yu asked suddenly. Her voice was soft and delicate but laced with a hint of coldness. It was a beautiful sound.
Shen Luoxi, who had been heading toward her makeshift bed on the floor, stopped. “Why what?”
For the first time, Pei Yu walked toward Shen Luoxi, though she stopped several paces away. “Why have you changed so much? From the bar that night until now, you’re like a completely different person. You aren’t the Shen Luoxi I know.”
Shen Luoxi replied, “Didn’t I give the reason before dinner? The fortune-telling master told me you bring me luck. Only by being good to you can I prosper.”
“Do you really think I believe that? And your mother—do you think she actually believed it?” Pei Yu asked point-blank.
Shen Luoxi was surprised by her bluntness. She hadn’t expected Pei Yu to see through her mother’s act. She took two steps toward Pei Yu, still respecting her personal space. “You’re right. That was just a reason I made up. There was no master. The reason I’m changing now is for money.”
“What do you mean?”
The Shen family was the wealthiest in the city. The one thing they didn’t lack was money. Why would she need it?
“You saw my parents’ attitude today,” Shen Luoxi told her. “If I continued acting like a useless playboy, they would eventually donate the entire family fortune to charity and not leave me a cent. Only if I change, if I stop fooling around, go to school, and manage the company will they feel safe handing the inheritance to me.”
“Just for that reason?” Pei Yu clearly remained skeptical. The explanation was too simple to be convincing.
Shen Luoxi leaned in slightly, her eyes burning with an intense focus. “Is that not enough? I am the eldest daughter of the Shen family. I was born with a silver spoon and have never suffered a day in my life. If my parents donate the fortune, my status will vanish. All the people I’ve bullied in the past would pay me back twofold. I, Shen Luoxi, will never allow that to happen.”
For the first time since the hotel incident, Pei Yu felt a familiar chill in the other woman’s gaze. The old Shen Luoxi could never hide anything; one look and Pei Yu knew what the scumbag was up to. But now, she found herself unable to read her at all.
Knock, knock. The helper entered with two glasses of water on a tray.
“Put them on the table,” Shen Luoxi instructed. The helper complied, nodded to them both, and exited.
Silence returned to the room. Shen Luoxi relaxed her posture and stretched. “Alright, it’s late. Go to sleep. If you’re bored sleeping alone, I could always keep you company. After all, without the ‘master’s’ prophecy, it doesn’t really matter if I’m good or bad to you. Even if I treat you poorly, I doubt my parents would say much. I am their biological daughter, after all.”
Shen Luoxi reached out playfully, as if she were about to lung forward and grab her with “wicked” intent.
Pei Yu’s eyes darkened, and she stepped back to dodge her. “Miss Shen should get some rest early.” With that, she walked around her and went to bed.
Shen Luoxi withdrew her hand with a smirk. She went to her spot on the floor, smoothed it out, and then grabbed her pajamas to take a shower. She didn’t bother getting pajamas for Pei Yu. She knew the woman wouldn’t feel comfortable enough to shower here; she’d likely just brush her teeth and wait until she got home tomorrow to clean up.
After showering and drying her hair, Shen Luoxi crawled into her floor bed, stretched, and fell into a peaceful sleep. Pei Yu lay on the bed, sleeping in her clothes. To be precise, she didn’t sleep much at all. She stayed awake until dawn before finally succumbing to exhaustion and dozing off for a moment. She still didn’t trust Shen Luoxi.
In the morning, they washed up, had breakfast, and were driven back.
Pei Yu had to attend her university’s anniversary celebration today. Shen Luoxi had promised to accompany her but stay outside. However, Shen Luoxi had another urgent task: she needed to change the “underworld” decor of her apartment. Especially those red and green lights in the living room; seeing them at night was genuinely terrifying.
At 5:00 PM, the two took the elevator down together. Since she wasn’t attending the ceremony, Shen Luoxi was dressed professionally yet casually in a white shirt and a simple blazer, her long hair falling in loose curls over her shoulders. She looked effortlessly chic.
In contrast, Pei Yu wore a sexy, deep black gown with a high slit, revealing her swan-like neck and collarbone. With her dark hair and red lips, she exuded the glamorous beauty of a vintage Hong Kong film star.
In the elevator, Shen Luoxi couldn’t stop herself from admiring Pei Yu’s reflection in the mirrored walls. “That dress suits you perfectly,” she complimented.
Pei Yu looked at the reflection and replied with a detached, “Thank you.”
The elevator arrived. They stepped out to find Zhou Jing waiting for them, accompanied by Pei Yu’s regular assistant.
“President Shen, Teacher Pei,” Zhou Jing greeted them with a nod.
Pei Yu had seen her a few times at the office. She knew Zhou Jing had a good reputation for both her character and professional ability, but she was confused. “Sister Zhou Jing, why are you here?”
Zhou Jing glanced at Shen Luoxi and remained silent.
“Starting today, Zhou Jing is your new manager,” Shen Luoxi introduced. “I hope you two get to know each other well. I’m sure you’ll work well together.”
“Zhou Jing is my new manager?” Pei Yu was incredulous.
Shen Luoxi nodded. “Yes. I evaluated all the managers in the company, and she is the most suitable. I think you’ll be pleased.”
Pleased was an understatement. Pei Yu was very satisfied.
A car was waiting at the curb. As they walked out, the assistant held the door open. The assistant sat in the back first, followed by Shen Luoxi and Pei Yu. Zhou Jing waited for them to get settled before closing the door and taking the front passenger seat for easy coordination.
