Hu Zhuo’s expression immediately darkened.

“What are you doing here?”

“What’s wrong? Sister Hu Li is giving birth, and I’ve already had several litters. I’ve got more experience than her. Can’t I come and take a look?”

Though Hu Rong’s words sounded concerned, her tone betrayed not a shred of worry.

Amidst the pained moans from inside, Hu Zhuo was so anxious he wished he could take Hu Li’s place in childbirth. Meanwhile, Hu Rong’s face was alight with excitement—she would be overjoyed if Hu Li died from the pain. That way, there’d be one less female in the tribe. With all the other females under her thumb, she’d soon become the most influential woman in the tribe, second only to the chief and the priestess. Her children would then have a shot at inheriting the chief’s position.

When the sounds of pain ceased, Hu Rong smirked triumphantly at Hu Zhuo. “No more noise from inside. Sister Hu Li must have died from the pain. After all, childbirth is an extremely dangerous thing for females.”

“H-how could this be…” Hu Zhuo’s grip loosened, and the firewood he’d been holding for boiling water clattered to the ground. Hu Li couldn’t be gone, he hadn’t even become her mate yet. This couldn’t be happening.

Frantic, Hu Zhuo barged inside, only to freeze at the sight before him.

Hu Li was sitting leisurely on the bed, munching on a fruit. When she noticed Hu Zhuo entering, she jumped in surprise. “Why’d you come in? Get out! This is so awkward!”

“O-oh, right.” Only then did Hu Zhuo snap back to reality. Overcome with joy, he wiped away the tears at the corners of his eyes as he turned to leave.

Hu Rong, of course, also heard Hu Li’s voice. Fuming, she stomped her foot, then forced a smile. “Oh, the female just had some early labor pains, it wasn’t time yet. But when she really goes into labor, if the cub gets stuck or she starts hemorrhaging… well, that’ll be a real disaster.”

After saying this, Hu Rong seemed to already envision the scene of Hu Li bleeding to death. However, when she turned to look at Hu Zhuo, she was met with a pair of crimson fox eyes glaring at her furiously, as if fixated on prey.

At that moment, the priest’s voice echoed from within the cave. “Hu Rong, how could you say such things? Go home for now. We don’t need you here at the moment.”

“But, Priest, I was just—”

“Your cubs are still young and need their mother’s care. I heard one of them got injured. Go back now. After Hu Li gives birth, I’ll come check on them.”

Hu Rong immediately agreed. Her cub had been mischievous last night, climbing a tree in the dark and accidentally falling. The priest had said its bones were broken and would need time to heal, but there was always the risk of the cub not surviving. Today, upon hearing Hu Li was about to give birth, she couldn’t bear the thought, why should her cub suffer while Hu Li’s thrived? She refused to let her have it easy.

Now, overjoyed, Hu Rong dropped the matter of Hu Li’s labor. If the priest would spare more attention to her cub, she was sure it would pull through.

After nearly an hour of labor pains, Hu Li gave birth.

Hu Zhuo waited anxiously outside. When he heard the soft “awoo awoo” cries, his body stiffened. Was that,  the sound of Hu Li’s cub? So adorable. He vowed to raise the little one strong and healthy.

Inside the cave, Hu Li had no idea a certain fox was already eager to step up as a devoted father.

Upon seeing the cub’s true form, even the priest gasped in astonishment. “A tiger?!”

“If only it were a female tiger.”

Hu Li gazed at the tiger cub in her arms her child, born after a month of pregnancy. It was her flesh and blood, her only kin in this unfamiliar land.

Then, a system notification shattered the tender moment.

As the zeros kept piling up in her mind, Hu Li was dumbfounded. “System, what’s going on?”

But the system continued repeating zeros, too busy to respond, until another alert blared.

[Warning! Warning! System malfunction detected. System malfunction detected.]

Then, silence.

Hu Li was baffled, but then she recalled the system’s explanation: the higher the father’s cultivation level, the more points she’d earn. Could it be?

The flood of points had apparently fried the system’s CPU. Suppressing her confusion, Hu Li ordered Hu Zhuo to fetch hot water so she could clean the cub properly.

By then, the priest had left for Hu Rong’s home, leaving the cave undisturbed. Only then did Hu Zhuo finally let his emotions pour out.

“Hu Li, I was so scared during your labor. I really thought I was going to lose you. Could you not take any other beast husbands?”

“Why?” Hu Li didn’t understand. In this world, wasn’t it the norm for females to have multiple male mates? Was his thinking ahead of its time?

“I don’t mean anything by it, I just think that with each additional beast husband comes more pain and danger in childbirth.”
