- Chapter 4 - Going Into Labor, the Mysterious Man Arrives
Hu Zhuo went to the clan leader to collect a day’s worth of food in advance for Hu Li. Carefully repeating the grilling techniques from the night before, his hands gradually grew more adept.
“Hu Li, try this piece. Freshly grilled meat tastes the best. You should eat more to nourish yourself.”
Hu Li took the meat, but the moment it entered her mouth, her stomach churned violently, and she vomited.
“Sorry, I must have grilled it poorly. It’s terrible. Let me try again.”
Hu Li stopped him. “No, it’s not that. The little one in my belly must be restless. This is normal.”
Little one? Hu Zhuo stared intently at Hu Li’s abdomen. How wonderful it would be if the female he loved could bear his own offspring one day!
Hu Li knew this was morning sickness. She forced herself to eat more, afraid the baby wouldn’t get enough nutrients. Though she didn’t know who the father was, she could already sense the little life inside her. Experiencing pregnancy firsthand, she had grown attached to it.
[Ding! Host, a powerful force is approaching this area.]
???
“Powerful force? Is a meteor falling or something?”
[My silly host, don’t you know this world allows cultivation? And you need to cultivate too. How else are you going to help the Son and Daughter of Fortune become the strongest in the Beast World?]
“Me, silly? Who’s the silly one here, huh? System No. 250.”
System: Damn it, can’t win this argument. Totally outmatched. Stupid ranking disadvantage.
“Whatever strong force it is, as long as it doesn’t threaten me, who cares?” Hu Li continued leisurely eating her grilled meat. Strangely enough, she noticed that while chatting with the system, she hadn’t vomited this time.
By now, it was nearly noon, the time when beastmen prepared their meals. None of them noticed the two dark figures flashing across the sky above.
“My Lord, the person you seek shouldn’t be here.”
The man addressed as “Lord” wore a black robe, his long hair fluttering in the wind. He scanned the surroundings but detected no trace of the female’s aura. Had another male concealed her presence?
The thought made him frown. Had she already sought out another male so soon after mating with him?
Recalling her face, his frown deepened. Though she wasn’t much to look at, her figure was decent. If she behaved, he could grant her unparalleled glory.
“Let’s go.”
His subordinate followed as the Lord prepared to depart. In his eyes, their Lord was second only to the Beast God, the second greatest beastman in this world. The female worthy of becoming his mate should be the noblest and most beautiful—certainly not some lowborn from the slums.
[Ding! The system detects that the mysterious force is moving away from the Red Fox Tribe.]
“See? I told you. The affairs of the mighty have nothing to do with us small fries.”
The two dark figures streaked across the sky when suddenly, a beam of golden light shot toward them.
The Lord twisted midair to evade, and the two descended slowly to the ground.
“Show yourself!”
With a furious roar from the man, a tornado formed in the distance, charging straight at them.
The subordinate immediately stepped forward to block it. “How dare you! Who dares attack the Temple Lord? Reveal yourself at once!” He prepared to strike but was stopped by the Temple Lord.
“A mere Purple Crystal beastman dares to ambush this Temple Lord? It seems your master has a death wish.”
With a wave of his hand, the tornado vanished instantly, revealing a Purple Crystal Snake Beast that tumbled out from within.
The Amethyst Snake Beast had a long scar across his face, making him appear even more ferocious. Dragging his tail, he glared fiercely at the revered Temple Lord, then suddenly burst into loud laughter.
“Hahaha, Temple Lord! After the Beast God, you are the most revered among all beasts—especially by me. I was your most loyal follower. And yet, you slaughtered my entire clan. Why? What did we do wrong? Why did you kill us?”
The Amethyst Snake Beast spoke with such intensity that the scar on his face twisted, making him look even more terrifying.
“Rules,” the Temple Lord slowly uttered the word.
“Ha! Bullshit rules! We never committed any heinous acts, it was those people who forced us!”
The Temple Lord frowned again. The Amethyst Beastkin had already wasted too much of his time. “Get lost.”
With just one move, the Amethyst Beastkin was sent flying by a devastating force. By the time he lifted his head, the Temple Lord was long gone.
“Temple… one day, I will kill you and offer your blood to my fallen kin.”
Since Fox Carp didn’t know which clan her unborn cub belonged to or how long her gestation period would be, she went to consult the priest. When she learned she would likely give birth in about a month, she was stunned.
Though she knew animals didn’t carry their young for long, her mindset was still rooted in human norms. The idea that she only had to endure a month of pregnancy thrilled her to no end.
Throughout that month, Fox-Blaze often came to help Fox Carp. As her belly grew larger, Fox-Blaze even began sleeping near her dwelling so he could respond quickly if she called.
On the twenty-ninth day of her pregnancy, Fox Carp’s belly had grown so big she could only sit on the stone bed, barely able to walk. Outside, Fox-Blaze was boiling water, he had completely overcome his fear of fire and even fancied himself capable of becoming a priest.
However, he kept Fox Carp’s ability to create fire a tightly guarded secret. If word got out, it would shake the entire Beast World. He wasn’t sure whether that would be good or bad for her.
After a comfortable bath, Fox Carp suddenly felt something was wrong. Her belly began to ache in waves. Suspecting she was going into labor, she immediately sent Fox-Blaze to fetch the priest.
This was her first pregnancy and first birth, and her heart was a mess of panic.
When the priest arrived and confirmed she was indeed in labor, Fox Carp felt a mix of anticipation and fear. The medical conditions here were far too primitive even modern humans faced dangers during childbirth. What if… something happened to her? She hadn’t lived nearly enough yet!
“Relax. First-time births are always like this for females. Once you’ve gone through it once, you won’t be as scared the next time.”
The pain in her belly left Fox Carp no room for further thought. She entrusted her life entirely to the priest. She still wanted to live, still wanted to return home, she couldn’t die in this strange world.
“Don’t worry! With me here, you won’t die.”
“The Bodhisattva has answered my prayers! The Bodhisattva has answered my prayers!”
[Stupid host, it’s me your system!]
Fox Carp stiffened. Right, right, she still had the system. “You’d better keep your word!”
[I will, I will. After all, we still have unfinished tasks. If we fail this time, the higher-ups will definitely send me in to complete them.]
Fox Carp: So in the system’s eyes, transmigrators are just doing the dirty work.
“What Bodhisattva? Fox Carp, what are you talking about?”
Faced with the priest’s questioning, Fox Carp could only brush it off, claiming she was delirious from the pain.
The priest accepted the explanation, but Fox-Blaze, waiting anxiously outside, was another matter.
“Priest, how much longer until Koi gives birth? Will she be alright?”
“Just birthing a pup, it’s not like Koi is some delicate flower. Every female goes through this.”
The sharp, mocking voice of Rong came from behind.
