Chapter 9: Nobody Believes the Yang Family
Yang Xue sneered. “We didn’t do anything wrong. Why should we kneel?”
Wang Dani pointed a shaking finger at her. “Old man, look! Rebellion! They’ve all gone mad!”
Furious at being defied once again, Old Man Yang barked at his second son to fetch the cattle whip.
Yang Xue saw the leather whip and didn’t flinch. She nudged her younger brother, Yang Tian, and mouthed two words: “Find the Chief.” Yang Tian nodded nervously and slipped away.
Yang San and Qian Yue’e, trembling with fear, threw themselves in front of Yang Xue. “Father, Mother, Xue’er is just young and ignorant. If you want to beat someone, beat us, but don’t hurt the child!”
Old Man Yang swung the whip at Yang San with a crack. “I’ll beat the lot of you! Eating our food but refusing to listen!”
Yang Xue didn’t move to stop it immediately. She waited until two vivid red welts appeared on Yang San’s back. Only then did she step forward and snatch the whip out of Old Man Yang’s hand with a swift, violent tug.
Caught off guard, the old man stumbled as the whip was easily ripped away.
“Damn it,” Yang Xue spat, her voice low and dangerous. “You old geezers, I gave you an inch and you’re trying to take a mile, aren’t you?”
The courtyard fell silent. Old Man Yang gasped, his chest heaving with rage. “You… you brat! This is treason! I’ll kill you!”
Yang Xue laughed coldly. “Then try it. Let’s see what you can actually do to me.”
Her defiance sent shockwaves through the family. Not just the elders, but even Yang San and Yang Shuang were frozen in disbelief.
“What are you all standing there for?!” Old Man Yang roared at the rest of the family. “Seize her! I’m going to beat this arrogant wretch to death today!”
…
The One-Woman Army
The crowd of relatives—the eldest brother and his three kids, the second brother’s family—ten people in total, began to close in on her.
Yang San’s branch panicked, but Yang Xue remained calm. “Come on then. I’ve been wanting to test the weight of this whip myself.”
The eldest brother, Yang Da, was used to bullying Yang San’s family. He didn’t believe for a second that a slip of a girl like Yang Xue would actually strike him. He lunged first, only to be met by a decisive crack as the whip lashed across his chest.
He howled and recoiled. “You little bitch!” He tried to rush her again, but Yang Xue was a blur of motion. She rained down lashes on him, the sound of leather hitting flesh echoing through the yard. It sounded excruciating.
The others halted, their courage evaporating.
“Yang San! Are you just going to let this girl beat your own family?” Yang Da screamed, trying to use his brother to restrain her.
Yang Xue didn’t look back. “Dad, if you try to stop me, you’re not my father anymore.”
Yang San froze.
Yang Shuang and Yang Yu, watching their oppressors finally taste their own medicine, felt a surge of exhilaration. They secretly grabbed their parents’ sleeves, keeping them from interfering.
Qian Yue’e didn’t care about the others getting hit, but she was terrified of the repercussions. In this era, striking an elder was a grave offense. “Xue’er…” she called out weakly.
“Mom, Dad, don’t forget what you promised me,” Yang Xue reminded them sternly.
…
The “Black Lotus” Reversal
“Justice! There is no justice! Everyone, come see! The money-loser is rebelling! She’s hitting her elders!”
Wang Dani began to wail at the top of her lungs, hoping to draw the villagers. If the whole village saw Yang Xue hitting them, the girl would be ruined.
Yang San’s heart hammered against his ribs. “Xue’er, give me the whip, quickly!”
Yang Xue, however, remained perfectly calm. She stepped toward the wailing Wang Dani and delivered a sharp lash to her shoulder. The old woman shrieked in genuine pain.
“Grandma, don’t mention it,” Yang Xue smiled thinly. “I thought you were shouting too quietly. I’m just helping you find your voice.”
Wang Dani, nearly bursting with spite, lunged at Yang Xue with her claws out, only to receive two more stinging lashes. “AAAGH!!”
Her screams were so loud they finally drew the neighbors. Hearing the approaching footsteps, Yang Xue’s demeanor changed in a heartbeat. She shoved the whip into Wang Dani’s hand and collapsed onto the ground, curling into a small, trembling ball.
“Grandpa, Grandma, please stop! Don’t hit me anymore! It hurts so much!”
The Yang family stood frozen, stunned by her sudden transformation. Wang Dani, realizing she was being framed, raised the whip in a blind fury to actually strike the girl.
“Wang Dani! Stop! Do you want to kill her?!”
A woman about Wang Dani’s age burst into the yard. The villagers followed, witnessing exactly what Yang Xue intended: the old woman standing over a curled-up girl with a whip raised high.
“Grandma, I’m sorry, I’m sorry… please stop…” Yang Xue sobbed.
Little Yang Yu took the hint perfectly. She threw herself over Yang Xue, shielding her. “Second Sister! Are you okay? Grandma, please don’t hit her anymore! You’re going to kill her!”
“Hit me instead! Grandma, hit me! Sister’s head is already hurt, and you threw her in the river… she hasn’t recovered yet! She’ll die! Just hit me… waaaaah!”
Yang Xue was internally impressed. Damn, this kid is a natural-born actor.
The crowd erupted in fury, pointing fingers at Wang Dani.
“She hit us first!” Wang Dani screamed, her face contorted. “This brat is a liar! Don’t be fooled!”
The rest of the Yang family chimed in. “Yes! She was whipping us just a second ago!”
The villagers didn’t buy it for a second. “Bah! Do you take us for fools? We saw you with the whip in your hand, Wang Dani! How can a sick girl beat ten of you? Have you no shame?”
