Chapter 27: Must Earn Money Quickly
Yang the Third steadied his mind, recalling the words Yang Xue had coached him to say.
Yes, Yang Xue had “had a dream” again.
In the dream, a band of bandits stormed the mountain. Since the mountain was currently home only to women and children who had no way to resist, the grain hidden there by the villagers was completely plundered.
Stealing grain wasn’t enough, however. When the bandits saw the mountain was full of women and children, the prettier women could not escape their clutches, and the older children were snatched away—likely to be sold to human traffickers.
Yang Xue hadn’t wasted any time. As soon as she “woke up,” she told her family about the dream. Having become firm believers in her prophetic dreams, the family was terrified. Yang Xue told them not to panic and instructed her father to inform the Village Head.
Of course, they couldn’t tell the Village Head it was a dream.
“Village Head, yesterday when my wife and I were in the woods cutting trees, we accidentally spotted a group of men acting suspiciously, watching where our villagers have set up camp.”
“We could tell they had bad intentions, so we quietly crept closer.”
“Village Head, guess what we overheard?”
The Village Head asked anxiously, “What did you hear?”
“They are planning to come and steal our grain.”
The Village Head was horrified. “How can this be allowed to happen?”
Yang the Third nodded gravely. “Indeed. That’s why I rushed over to see you first thing this morning.”
“Village Head, for the next few days, the men must return to the mountain to sleep. We need people on night watch duty.”
“That grain is our lifeline; we cannot let it be taken.”
After the flood, the grain in nearby villages had been soaked, and the crops in the fields were drowned. This year’s harvest was a complete mystery. Niaor Village was even worse off; most of the crops had been washed away. A zero harvest was a certainty, so their surplus grain truly was their life. Government relief would only last so long.
Recognizing the severity, the Village Head nodded repeatedly. “Understood. I’ll take care of this.”
“Thank you, Yang the Third. You’ve saved everyone yet again.”
Yang the Third waved a hand modestly. “It’s nothing, just doing what’s right. I’ll head back now.”
…
On Yang Xue’s side, after the “bandit dream,” she made another trip to the coal mine. She suspected the bandits from the mine and the ones targeting the villagers were the same group. She had to hide the coal mine properly; she couldn’t let those thugs benefit from it.
Yang Xue worked hard, digging up soil to cover the exposed coal, layering it with gravel, and finally pulling vines over the spot. Looking at her perfect camouflage, she clapped her hands in satisfaction before heading home.
When she arrived, her parents were out, so she approached Yang Shuang.
“Sister, do you know the way to town?”
The original owner of the body had never been to town, so Yang Xue had no idea which way to go.
Yang Shuang was surprised. “Xue’er, you want to go to town?”
“Mhm.” Yang Xue nodded, then leaned in mysteriously to whisper in her sister’s ear. “Sister, I just dug up a wild ginseng root in the forest. I’m going to town to trade it for money.”
Their grain was going to run out soon. She needed to get some cash for emergencies. The ginseng was actually from her space; the laboratory building didn’t just have fruits and vegetables—it also housed cultivated medicinal herbs.
Originally, Yang Xue thought about selling produce, but in the current crisis, selling fresh fruits and vegetables would be too conspicuous. Medicinal herbs were the fastest way to get money without raising too many questions from her parents.
Yang Shuang’s eyes grew wide. “W-wild ginseng? Xue’er, you said you found wild ginseng?”
Yang Shuang had never seen one, but she had heard people say a single root could sell for many taels of silver. If it were true, their family would be rich and never go hungry again.
“Mhm, I found it.” Yang Xue pulled the root from her robe to show her. “See? I’m not joking.”
Yang Shuang carefully took the root, her face full of wonder. “So this is wild ginseng…”
“Xue’er, your luck is incredible.” Yang Shuang truly believed it. First wild chickens, then rabbits, and now ginseng.
“Sister, I’m going to sell it tomorrow.”
Yang Xue was in a hurry to make money because she knew that in a few days, grain prices would skyrocket. She needed to buy as much as possible before people realized the true extent of the shortage. She couldn’t just take grain from her space because the “trial fields” there only had vegetables and fruits—no staples like rice or wheat. Even if she did have staples, she needed a legitimate reason to suddenly have them. “Having money” was that reason.
“Xue’er, do you want to use the money for grain?”
“Yes.”
“But you said bandits might come. If we buy grain now, won’t it just be stolen?”
“Don’t worry. We’ll just buy a hundred catties first. Once we bring it back, we’ll bury it underground. The bandits won’t find it.”
In reality, Yang Xue planned to buy more than a hundred catties. Their family had no land for rice, and prices would soon become astronomical. She couldn’t tell her family the full plan yet, or she’d have to explain too much.
“Besides, Dad went to the Village Head. I’m sure he will handle the security.”
Yang Shuang nodded thoughtfully. She had no choice but to trust Yang Xue. After all, her sister could see the future in her dreams and was much sharper than the rest of them. Following her was the safest bet.
“Alright. I’ll go to town with you tomorrow.”
“Sister, is there a path that avoids the other villagers?”
Yang Shuang understood immediately. Her sister was truly cautious. “Yes. We can head over the mountain ridge tomorrow instead of taking the main road. No one will see us.”
“But the mountain path is difficult.”
Yang Xue waved it off. “It’s fine. My health is great right now.”
Having frequently drunk from the spirit spring and eaten fruit from her space lately, Yang Xue felt her physical condition had improved immensely.
