Chapter 25: Eldest Uncle Yang Kicked Unconscious
When Yang Shuang and the others saw Yang Xue push Yang the Elder down, and saw how miserably he fell, they really wanted to laugh, but they managed to hold it back.
After a dizzying spell of seeing stars, Yang the Eldest gnashed his teeth and roared at Yang the Second, “Second brother, what are you standing there for? Hurry up and help me!”
“Oh, right!” Snapped back to reality by the roar, Yang the Second hurriedly scrambled to help him up.
Once back on his feet, Yang the Elder’s eyes were practically spitting fire at Yang Xue. But Yang Xue wasn’t afraid of his glares; with only them around right now, she felt free to do as she pleased.
She stood there with her arms crossed, looking perfectly relaxed—an attitude that nearly sent Yang the Eldest into a fit of rage.
“You wretched girl! If your parents won’t teach you how to respect your elders, then I, your Eldest Uncle, will do it for them!”
As he spoke, he raised his palm toward her again. Yang Xue didn’t hesitate; she lifted her foot and delivered a direct kick to his stomach. Once again, Yang the Eldest fell flat on his back.
Seeing his brother’s pathetic state, Yang the Second covered his face with his hand. He thought to himself that his older brother seemed a bit slow in the head—he had just tried to hit her and got hit himself. Now he got up and tried the exact same thing? No one is just going to stand there and let themselves be beaten.
This time, the wind was truly knocked out of Yang the Eldest. He lay on the ground for quite a while without moving.
Yang Shuang, Yang Yu, and Yang Tian were startled, their faces immediately filling with worry. Of course, they weren’t worried about Yang the Eldest’s well-being; they were worried that Yang Xue would be punished for hitting him.
“Xue’er, go back and lie down quickly!”
Yang Shuang had made up her mind. Everyone knew Yang Xue was in poor health. If anyone came to investigate this, she would claim that she, the eldest sister, had done it to protect her siblings.
Yang Xue was confused for a second. “Huh?”
“Go lie down. This has nothing to do with you. If anyone asks, just say I was the one who pushed Elder Uncle, okay?”
Yang Yu and Yang Tian wrinkled their small faces and didn’t answer, while Yang Xue felt a mix of surprise and warmth in her heart.
Meanwhile, Yang the Second… Wait, are you guys just going to pretend I don’t exist?
Yang Xue smiled and patted Yang Shuang’s shoulder. “Big Sister, don’t worry. Nothing is going to happen.”
Saying this, Yang Xue flashed a dangerous smile. She cracked her knuckles with a series of pops and slowly approached Yang the Second. “Second Uncle, do you want to taste my fist too?”
Yang the Second instinctively shook his head. When did this niece of mine become so terrifying? Is this even the same Yang Xue I used to know?
“Second Uncle, I believe you are a smart man.”
Yang the Second nodded vigorously.
Yang Xue turned back and said to Yang Tian, “Go to the large cave and get people.”
Yang Tian didn’t know what she was planning, but he listened to her implicitly. He immediately ran off to fetch help.
Soon, several village women followed Yang Tian back. Upon arrival, they saw Yang Xue, Yang Shuang, and Yang Yu crying their eyes out.
“Waaah… Eldest Uncle, are you okay? Waaah…”
Yang Yu was putting the most effort into the performance. When the women saw Yang the Eldest sprawled on the ground, they were shocked and rushed over.
“Oh dear, what happened here?”
Yang Xue wiped away a tear. “Auntie, Eldest Uncle came to demand grain from us. We don’t have any, so he tried to rush over and hit us. But he tripped over something himself and ended up like this.”
When Sun Qiuping arrived and saw that Yang the Second was fine, she breathed a sigh of relief. Hearing Yang Tian say something happened to “Eldest Uncle,” she had feared her husband was involved. Seeing him unharmed, she relaxed. As for Yang the Eldest, she couldn’t care less.
“What? They came to ask you for grain?”
“Yes, Grandpa sent them to demand it. But where would we get grain? We’ve been eating wild vegetables all these days.”
Immediately, the village women turned their gazes toward Yang the Second with disdain. “Yang the Second, this isn’t right of you.”
“How could Yang the Third’s family have any grain? Don’t you know exactly how little you gave them when the family split?”
Yang the Second felt helpless. “No, we just came to ask…”
One woman spat on the ground. “Just ‘asking’ involves trying to hit children?”
Another auntie chimed in, “Let’s not worry about that for now. Check on him first; we can’t have him dying from a fall.”
An experienced older woman stepped forward to examine Yang the Eldest. Finding him alive with no broken bones or obvious wounds, she looked at Yang the Second. “Hurry up and carry him home. He just fainted from the fall; nothing else is wrong.”
Yang the Second was reluctant. He had no strength in his body—where was he supposed to find the energy to carry his brother? “Heh, since he’s just fainted, let him lie there for a bit. He’ll be fine when he wakes up.”
Since he wasn’t dead or injured, the other women didn’t bother further. However, they were determined to take a stand against this bullying. If it hadn’t been for Yang the Third warning the Village Head about the flood, they didn’t know where their families would be right now. Yang the Third was their savior, and they wouldn’t let his family be bullied.
“Yang the Second, you go back and tell Old Man Yang: the Village Head said those without grain can borrow from the village office first.”
“You can go borrow grain instead of coming here to make life hard for the Third brother’s family.”
“We will definitely tell the Village Head about you coming here to harass them and trying to lay hands on the kids.”
Yang the Second tried to defend himself. “We weren’t going to hit them!”
“Pah! As if we don’t know the character of the Yang family men! Get moving and drag him out of here.”
Yang the Second wanted to say more, but Sun Qiuping tugged at him. “Enough. Stop talking and help me drag him back to the large cave.”
Yang the Second glanced at Yang Xue and her siblings, feeling incredibly frustrated. He finally realized why Yang Xue was so fearless: in the eyes of the villagers, no one would ever believe that a girl like her would actually beat someone up.
After they dragged him away and the women left with some comforting words, Yang Yu and Yang Tian immediately looked at Yang Xue with stars in their eyes. “Second Sister, you’re so smart! You always make it so they can’t even complain about their suffering.”
Yang Shuang laughed too. “With that quick mind of yours, we really do need to learn a thing or two from you.”
They realized if they could think as fast as Yang Xue, they would never have to worry about being bullied again.
